First-generation learners turn engineers under a rural scholarship programme at a Chennai college, and find placements in leading companies.

They walked into the room one after another — Divya, Krithika, Sivapathy, Bhuvaneshwaran and Paneerselvam — and they had two things in common: a smile stretching from ear to ear, and bristling excitement that they tried unsuccessfully to keep under check. All five, final-year students at Chennai’s SSN College of Engineering, had just emerged from campus interviews with job offers from leading companies such as Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Sanmar Engineering and Flextronics. So what’s special about this scenario, played out annually across campuses, you might ask. The five of them, along with 14 other students in their college, are first-generation learners emerging out of rural Government high schools. They are the first batch of resident rural merit scholarship holders selected by the college under a unique programme launched four years ago.

Coming from schools that offer the barest minimum in facilities or faculty, many of them juggled studies with a job — be it rag picking, goat herding, lorry cleaning or coolie work — to supplement their family income. Some even arrived barefoot for their college admission interview.

The faculty encouraged and motivated the students, helping them gain confidence.

Divya, the daughter of an auto driver from Thiruvallur, recalls how scared she felt when she first joined SSN. “Everyone was speaking in English; I felt embarrassed and self-conscious, and was reluctant to speak up even when I did not understand something in class. But today I am confident about myself and very comfortable with English.”

Divya has an offer from Cognizant and looks forward to taking up her first job. “I want to be creative about finding solutions and stand out as a team player,” she says.

The rural scholarship programme was established by Shiv Nadar, founder of HCL and the Shiv Nadar Foundation. It was conceived by Kala Vijayakumar, President of SSN Institutions (an initiative of SNF), in keeping with Nadar’s vision of ‘levelling the playing field across all economic strata’ through equal opportunity in education. The scholarship programme aimed to reach out each year to 20 economically disadvantaged children from rural government schools through a merit-based selection process (the number of scholarships has gradually been increased to 25). The objective was to train and mainstream them to lead productive and socially responsible lives. But this proved easier said than done.

SSN secured a list of 800-plus government schools in rural areas from the Directorate of School Education in Tamil Nadu. The college wrote to all of them about the scholarship scheme, asking for names of toppers in the Maths/ Physics/ Chemistry stream. It heard back from less than 150. Of this pool, 20 were picked. The scholarship entitles them to free tuition, board and lodge.

The students were asked to join one month ahead of the regular stream to receive special coaching in English and social skills. Through newspapers and films, they were familiarised with urban lifestyles. They were taught conversation skills to enable them to interact confidently with peers.

Their mentor was Dr K. Kasthuri, Dean of PG Studies, who has taught in colleges for more than 45 years.

“We assigned one faculty member for every two students to follow their progress, encourage them and give personal attention… initially many of the children had trouble clearing their exams, but we did not give up on them and they caught up with the rest of the class within about eighteen months. They became so comfortable that soon some of them headed professional forums in their departments, and others shone as class toppers,” says Kasthuri.

Krithika, for instance, discovered she was good in oratorical competitions. “I was surprised at how well I did,” says this youngster from Karur.

On completion of the four-year course, the scholarship students are given fifteen days’ training in personality development and soft skills, including how to face job interviews. Nine out of the first batch of 19 students have received not one, but two job offers from premier companies, with salaries averaging Rs 3 lakh and above.

“I am so excited by my transformation over these four years that I want to be a role model and help other children like me,” says Krithika, who is all set to soon join HCL.

Grit, determination… and graduation!

Sivapathy from Andimadam, in Tamil Nadu, is the son of a weaver who earns about Rs 1,100 a month. He was able to study up to Std XII after bagging the Government’s talent test scholarship of Rs 1,000 a year. “I had no support, but I was determined to study hard and make a mark. I am very lucky I got into such a prestigious engineering college through the rural merit scholarship programme,” he says.

Currently the Student Secretary of the college’s IEEE chapter, he received two job offers and decided to join HCL. His salary will make a major difference to his family and he can pay for his sister’s education too. “I would like to give back to society by helping other children like me who lack resources to study,” he says, adding that he wishes to contribute to the SSN Trust for rural students. His heart is equally set on getting an MBA after some years of work.

Bhuvaneshwaran from Gobichettypalayam will soon join Infosys. With a love for research, he wants to become a professor after getting his PhD. He is the first graduate in his family and wishes to be a role model for first-generation learners like him.

Paneerselvam from Vizhupuram is the first graduate in his entire village. “I am very excited. I have made it to this point only because of SSN, and especially because of our Dean. He provided great inspiration and encouragement for me. He helped me improve my communication skills and build confidence,” he says.

In love with what he is currently working on in college — a project in cloud computing — he wants to become a domain specialist in that area. “My entire village looks at me differently now,” he says with a twinkle in his eye.

In fact, he has motivated a childhood friend to gain admission to SSN through the same scholarship programme. After he takes up his job at Wipro, Paneerselvam hopes to send money home to his family and later pursue an M.Tech degree.

NEW DELHI: Sparrows are seen as a mascot for ecological conservation but birdwatchers are worried that adverse environmental factors such as shrinking habitat may be driving them into hiding.Ecologists warn these small, highly social birds, that often nest in nooks and niches in and around human settlements, may also go the vultures’ way if enough awareness is not created about them.”Sparrows are amongst the most abundant bird species in urban areas, but we still need to conserve their habitat. Otherwise they too may go the vultures’ way,” Mohammed Dilawar, president of Nature Forever Society, said.

“Earlier, the vultures were amongst the most abundant birds in urban areas but now, due to loss of habitat, they are almost gone. Same could happen with sparrows,” he said.

“In our country, there’s a gap in scientific knowledge. The statistics of species populations are often outdated. So we are launching a bird monitoring system on World Sparrow Day, March 20,” Dilawar added. He however declined to describe the working of the system.

Giving the reasoning behind selecting the common sparrow as a mascot for ecological conservation, he said, “Sparrow is like an umbrella species for all the birds that dwell near human settlements. Also, it is much more recognisable than many other species. People often talk about conserving the tigers or other more glamourous species, but that is sad. All species need equal attention and conservation.”

Surya Prakash, the science officer at Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU), claimed that numbers of sparrows weren’t a concern. He said that people didn’t know what to look for or where.

“I come across many people who claim that the sparrows are going down but would not know about the situation,” Prakash said.

“Most of the times, these people don’t have any valid statistical data and end up creating false alarms. And then, if you want to find something, you should know where to look. You can’t find a sparrow if you look for it in a mall in Gurgaon,” he added.

Prakash claimed that the sparrows were not dying out but often, due to changes in their living environment, they shift their nesting sites to other locations.

Primarily grain eaters, sparrows also eat insects and scavenge upon anything in small quantities. Amongst the most recognisable wild birds, the common sparrow can often be seen on the window ledges and garden trees, twittering busily.

However, there are still some safe havens for the city dwelling birds, according to the veteran birdwatcher.

“Even here, at JNU, we have a large number of sparrows. Or in old Delhi you can find big flocks of sparrows,” he said.

GOD EXISTS….

God Exists

A wonderful story : “GOD Exists”…

This is one of the best explanations of why GOD allows pain ‘n suffering that I have seen.
A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut ‘n his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation.

They talked about so many things ‘n various subjects.
When they eventually touched on the subject of GOD, the barber said: “I don’t believe that GOD exists.”
“Why do you say that?” asked the customer.

“Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that GOD doesn’t exist. Tell me, if GODexists, would there be so many sick people? would there be abandoned children?

If GOD existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can’t imagine a loving GOD who would allow all of these things.”

The customer thought for a moment, but didn’t respond because he didn’t want to start an argument
The barber finished his job ‘n the customer left the shop.Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair ‘n an untrimmed beard. He looked ‘n unkempt. The customer turned back ‘n entered the barbershop again ‘n he said to the barber:
“You know what? Barbers do not exist.”
“How can you say that?” asked the surprised barber.
“I am here, ‘n I am a barber. ‘n I just worked on you!”

“No!” the customer exclaimed. “Barbers don’t exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair ‘n untrimmed beards, like that man outside.”

“Ah, barbers DO exist! What happens is, people do not come to me.
“Exactly!- affirmed the customer. “That’s the point! GOD, too exist!

What happens, is, people don’t go to him ‘n do not look for him. That’s why there is so much pain ‘n suffering in the world.

YOUNSTERS SCRIPT A SUCCESS STORY …WORTH COPYING..

CHENNAI: When T M Sandeep, 24, gave up his job as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs last April to launch a startup with his friend K Anand, 26, he only knew he wanted to do something different rather than be at a regular job. He did not expect to taste success within six months and that too from a photocopy.

The idea of starting Photocopy Inc was to enable students to get a photocopy at 10 paise. Usually, one photocopy costs Re 1, and some shops offer a subsidised rate for bulk orders at 50 paise per copy. Photocopy Inc is able to give awayphotocopies at a 90% discount by selling one side of the sheet as ad space to companies.

Sandeep, who graduated in commerce in 2004, says they feature colour ads by any company that wants to reach out to a young audience, like motorbikes or fitness centres to meet costs.

“It took a while convincing firms that this advertising for a niche audience will be better than inserting pamphlets in newspapers. The logic is unmistakable. Nobody’s going to take an old newspaper and read it again. But, with many students taking photocopies of notes taken in class, the ad is sure to stay with them for a minimum of two weeks up to a semester,” says Sandeep.

The duo partner colleges to supply papers, one side of which has a printed ad, to photocopying kiosks set up in colleges in and around the city. Since August, the company has been able to bag six contracts, including at Loyola College of Arts and Sciences, LICET, NIFT and IIT Madras. A fitness centre whose ad features on the pages they supply to photocopying kiosks told them that they had a few registrations as a result of the ad. Photocopy Inc now has 11 brands advertising with them.

Both Anand and Sandeep, who are alumni of Loyola College, wanted their startup to be ethical as well. They provide environment-friendly wood-free paper made of bagasse for printing the ads and taking photocopies. They also do not allow students to take photocopies of printed material that could get them into copyright problems.

“Through our business model we ensure that the photocopier also makes more money than he used to earlier. This way it’s a win-win situation for students, companies that give us ads, the photocopier and for Photocopy Inc,” says Sandeep.

The entrepreneurs supply an average of 1 lakh papers a month to photocopiers in colleges. Once Photocopy Inc carves out a market for itself in all the top colleges in Chennai, Anand and Sandeep want to take their idea to cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kochi where there are a lot of educational institutions.

NEVER QUIT FROM YOUR COMMITMENT…

The Fern and the Bamboo

One day I decided to quit…. I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality….. I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with God.

“God”, I said. “Can you give me one good reason not to quit?”

His answer surprised me…

“Look around”, He said. “Do you see the fern and the bamboo?”

“Yes”, I replied.

“When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.”

In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo”.

He said, “In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit.”

He said, “Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant. But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle.”

He said to me, “Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots. I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. Don’t compare yourself to others.”

He said, “The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern, yet, they both make the forest beautiful.”

“Your time will come,” God said to me. “You will rise high!”

“How high should I rise?” I asked.

“How high will the bamboo rise?”,He asked in return.

“As high as it can?” I questioned.

Yes.” He said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can.”

I left the forest and brought back this story.

I hope these words can help you see that God will never give up on you……..

Never regret a day in your life.

Good days give you Happiness.

Bad days give you Experiences.

Both are essential to life.

Keep going…

Happiness keeps you Sweet,

Trials keep you Strong,

Sorrows keep you Human,

Failures keep you Humble,

Success keeps You Glowing,

But Only God keeps You Going!

Have a great day! The Sun is shining!!

STRANGE ..BUT TRUE…

Only in America can this happen!  Good one.

This took place in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars then insured them against, among other things, “FIRE” !!
Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.
In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were “lost in a series of small fires’.
The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.
The lawyer sued and WON !!!
Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous but he stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be acceptable explanation of the term ‘fire’ (as in the act of actually smoking the cigar) and was obligated to pay the claim.
Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that were “lost in a series of small fires’.
NOW FOR THE BEST PART…
After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON !!!
With evidence of his own insurance claim and testimony from the case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine !!!
This true story won First Place in the “Criminal Lawyers Award” contest in the following year.
