As you listen to your own silent rhythm, the pulse of life, your own heartbeat – you become whole, a complete man – fit in Mind, Body and Soul. Walking energizes you, awakens you and stills your mind to fully relax. With the change of mind your moods change and you experience a physical and a spiritual upliftment. As you relax, your perception change and you reach from the everyday conscious mind to your highest level of mind – the intuitive mind. Your subconscious cuts through the mental clutter, releasing latent vitality and creativity, transcending traditional linear thinking and helping you find a creative solution.
There are many ways you could possibly benefit yourselves from i.e. an exercise as simple as morning walk. In today’s irritatingly fast world, you deprive your self of the much needed oxygen that is anyways getting depleted with the time. The earliest hours in the morning would probably give you fresh oxygen and quality time to spend with the greenery and beauty around you that perhaps only writers and poets around you seem to notice. The oxygen that you get early in the morning also gives you great amount of energy especially to your joints. The movement in your legs releases good cholesterol in your blood, opening up some of the “chakras” or channels of energy. By constantly moving your joints, you increase your blood circulation in a way that can only be completed with your daily morning walk.
Awareness walking is a walking meditation. Focusing on the rhythm of the breath and rhythm of each step, we induce a state of a deep relaxation and self awareness. Adding mind-body technique to walking, we can provide greater relaxation and stress management, and can turn a routine walk into a creative & rejuvenating experience.

WHY WALKING

Ordinarily, in today’s hectic world, its quite possible that amidst so much that’s happening around you, makes you feel that an ideal life is but a living dream (which may remain as one) and you tend to lose out on great many things that the future holds for you. A great walk in the woods while admiring nature talks to you in many ways than one. For many of us this may be one of those things for which you either need luck or perhaps the time. And most of us believe that these are never in one’s grasp. Much of the time our bodies are sluggish and our blood never gets an airing. Oxygen is rarely allowed to surge through our veins making us feel energetic, alive and vital. But exercise can change all that. It rejuvenates and revitalizes the body’s cells, releasing muscular tension and relishing our energy levels. Exercise motivates, energizes and empowers. “The easiest way to change yourself is physically”. ‘Physical change quick’. So kick, start your day with a morning walk. They will tone and energizes you and connect you with your inner rhythms. Walking decreases stress hormones and increases relaxation hormones (beta-endorphins) which elevate your mood and increase your sense of well being.
Walking is natural mood elevator. It helps in promoting feelings of happiness and can ease mild depression. Walking gets you going, revs up your circulation and gives you the energy to get through the day.
The human body is the ultimate exercise machine and walking is the easiest and safest way for most people to re-energizes their bodies and burn away the harmful affects of stress. In other words, to experience health, fitness and deep relaxation, walk. Walking can be a whole philosophy of life. After all, from the moment we rise in the morning till we climb into bed at night, we are on and off our feet.

MORNING WALK AS EXERCISE

This is perhaps the most overlooked and neglected form of exercise. Because it sounds and look easy, most of us do not bother to walk, but prefer to sign up for expensive aerobic classes and spend a lot of time in a gym.
We recommend walking as exercise since it costs nothing, requires no partner and expensive gadgets, but will burn nearly the same calories as jogging does. It does not burden the body, instead if done in calm and peaceful surroundings like a park or country road, it will let off the tension in your mind and body.
Before you use walking as exercise

Make sure you do not eat an hour before going out for a walk. Digesting takes a lot of energy from the body. If you exercise right away after eating, you are going to overburden yourself. Fruits or juices are okay, since they do not tax the system as much.
Exercise alone will not make you healthy. No amount of walking or jogging will help the body if you do not eat properly or have greater affection with cigarettes and alcohol.
It does not really matter when you do it. Although we acknowledge that an early morning walk is better because the air is significantly fresher, for people who only have the afternoon to do it, it is okay.
Avoid busy roads. You need fresh air with green & clean surroundings. The aim is to relax the mind as well as exercise the body. If you are taking more carbon dioxide than oxygen, you are harming your body. So, find a nice, peaceful and green place.
How to do it

Actually, the human body is designed to walk, no one should be taught how to do it. However, for walking as exercise to give more impact, this is our recommendation
Get at least 30 minutes walk everyday. Keep your pace at 3 to 5 miles an hour.
Vary your routes so that you are not walking on flat ground.
If you cannot maintain brisk pace, this is what you should do. Alternate between a 2 minutes brisk walk with a more comfortable pace for the next 2 minutes. After that 2 minutes “rest”, pick up your pace again. If you can maintain brisk walk, do it for approximately 20 minutes. If you cannot allocate 30 minutes a day, don’t worry. The most important thing is to do it regularly. Walking as exercise will restore your peace of mind, make your blood pressure normal and control your appetite. It is better than any pills invented by mankind.
HOW WALKING AFFECTS YOUR BODY COMPONENTS

Lets learn how walking affects our body components. It affects the five components of fitness:
BODY COMPOSITION :
Walking four times a weak, 45 minutes each time, the average person can lose 18 pounds in a year with no change in diet. Walking can help you trim fat as well as tone your muscles.
CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS : Walking, at any level or speed, two or three times a weak for at least 20 minutes increases cardiovascular strength. By increasing the strength of your heart and lungs, you increase your ability not only to exercise longer and harder but also to perform everyday task without tiring.
FLEXIBILITY: As with any endurance activity, walking doesn’t significantly increase your flexibility. Every activity uses certain muscles groups more than others. Therefore you don’t stretch the muscles that walking uses extensively. They’ll tighten, straighten and perhaps cause pains or strains. These exercises are vital for remaining free injury.
MUSCULAR ENDURANCE: All walkers develop a moderate amount of endurance, which enables them to exercise longer before becoming exhausted. Race walker have high endurance comparable to that of marathon runners. Walking helps build your ability to do something longer without fatigue.
MUSCULAR STRENGTH: You will gain muscular strength with walking but probably not enough for well rounded fitness. Muscles that get an extra workout in walking include the entire back of the leg, calves, hamstrings, and gluteus. You will use muscles in the back of shoulders when you swing your arms. Walking provides other physical benefits and prevents dangers associated with other types of exercise. Walking is a low-impact exercise, which puts less strain on bones and tissues.
BENEFITS OF WALKING

Walking brings significant health benefits to body and mind. Research shows that regular walking contributes much to your overall health and fitness in important ways:
Strengthens your heart
Delays or prevents major diseases or illness
Reduces blood pressure and the risk of stroke
Reduces cholesterol
Strengthens joints and bones
Helps control weight
Improves mood and self-esteem
Contributes to “brain fitness”
Gives you energy and a good night’s rest
Relieves stress and worry
Improves balance and circulation
Boosts immune system
WALKING IS THE BEST MEDICINE

It works to build fitness, slimness and cardiovascular health and helps with relaxation.
WALKING AND BACKPAIN

Taking a walk regularly is one of the best things you can do for your back. It promotes muscular development, increases circulation, and speeds up the release of endorphins which provide a natural “high”.
WALKING AND OSTEOPOROSIS

As we get older there is a gradual decrease in skeletal strength. The mineral content of bones decreases and their texture becomes thinner. And because the bones are too porous and brittle, they are more likely to fracture. This condition is known as osteoporosis. Calcium and exercise are the keys to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Walking may help you combat it. It is the easiest and safest form of exercise for people of all ages. The studies show that a walk of just half an hour, four times a week, can help prevent osteoporosis.
WALKING AND CIGERETTE SMOKING

It has been seen that the people who are active and fit are not so likely to smoke as those people who are sedentary and less fit. Although walking does not actually stop people from smoking, the regular routine of walking can be applied as a positive habit to replace the negative habit of smoking. In order to improve your general health, you must find the will power to stop. Smoking causes feelings of fatigue because it impairs the delivery of oxygen to the cells of all the body’s organs, destroys vitamin c in the body, impairing the immune system and increases the amount of carbon monoxide in the bloodstream, leading to heart and lung disorders and cancer.
WALKING AND BLOOD PRESSURE

Regular walking can reduce high blood pressure – hypertension – by making the heart work more efficiently and by improving the circulation. It has been shown that blood pressure can be reduced by weight loss. Regular walking combined with a low fat, high fiber-diet is an excellent form of weight control. There are other ways in which you can help yourself to reduce high blood pressure:-
Do not smoke.
Decrease your intake of alcohol and caffeine.
And make sure your diet is low in salt, sugar and fat.
WALKING AND CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol is present not only in the blood stream but in all of the body’s tissues. Most of the cholesterol in the blood stream is made in the body, but some foods which we contain cholesterol (Dietary cholesterol). Cholesterol is transported in the blood by lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins – High density (HDLs) and Low density (LDLs). HDLs are sometimes called “good” and LDLs “bad” cholesterol. The higher your HDL level the lower the risk of heart disease. Stress can also affect your cholesterol levels. Regular walking can increase the levels of “good” cholesterol in the blood, reducing chances of a heart attack. So try to avoid stress – and relax. Go for a walk.
WALKING AND HEART

Regular walking may reduce the risk of a heart attack by half. It can help to lower the risk of coronary heart diseases as there is a link between vigorous physical exercise and a low incidence of heart failure.
Although regular, vigorous exercise can reduce the risk of developing coronary heart diseases, it cannot provide immunity. So many other factors have to be considered. And another way in which you can help yourself is by having a healthy and balanced diet.
WALKING ANG SELF CONFIDENCE

When you feel fit and healthy your self-confidence increases and you feel more able to cope with the demands mode on you. Time spent walking means time taken off from the stresses of daily life. As a result you feel less anxious. Regular exercise can increase the levels of endorphins – naturally secreted hormones – that appear to work in the brain, increasing a sense of well being. And this feeling of contentment in turn increase your Self confidence.

Hand-written letters, once a way of life, are now bits of memory
Hand-written letters — art, craft, habit, history, creativity, whatever it is or was — come with statuory warning today; it is bound to smack of nostalgia and irredeemable romanticism. And its perpetrators — terribly dated perplexing beings. Prefixed with a frivolous ‘snail’ once competitive counterparts came into the fray, letters have withdrawn without much of a whimper. Pale blue and pink sheets, folded in impossible ways and holding within words and emotions packed so tight that they struggle to breathe and delivered by breathless postmen are almost relics.

The bells tolled for the old-fashioned mails as the young naturally lived through e-mails, iPads and cell phones. Committed letter writers gingerly went online to keep pace. The post-offices overwhelmed by the fear of being redundant are revamping and re-discovering themselves.

Yet, when mails are a forgotten part of our lives, The Rumpus, a U.S. based online magazine tried something quirky recently to astonishing response. About six months ago, their website announced the launch of “Letters in the Mail”, through which a clutch of authors wrote letters to the subscribers. The letters, about three to four a month with each author writing one, landed in the subscriber’s mail box sending many into raptures. On their website are ecstatic responses from those who touched, felt and experienced those letters and those who wanted them spread out to India and Dubai.

A PART OF LIFE

However, with no such fillips here, letters are leaving our imagination, so too the act of writing them. The practitioners mourn its death with regret. Veteran author M.T. Vasudevan Nair, among the few who still communicates through letters, says, “Letter writing is an art and craft. I still write.” His letters are matter-of-fact, he says. S.K. Pottekkat, Vaikkom Muhammad Basheer, G. Sankara Kurup were beautiful letter writers, he adds. “Pottekkat’s letters were beautiful and elaborate. Basheer used to think a lot about the letter he wrote and even his letters were humorous.”

Growing up when even printed books were rare, M.T. says, letters and letter-writing were all they had. “In the beginning, even the novels were in letter-form,” he reminds. He remembers vividly the exalted figure of his childhood – the postman. “The postman was an institution. He was not merely a man who gave you letters. If he saw you were anxious, he would assure you, tell you ‘It will come. Wait a day or two.’”

M.T. says, “Letters were part of literature. I fear it will cease. It is happening the world over. In France, there are many who are sorry about letters no more being part of their lives. I depend on letters. I don’t gel well with machines, I can’t drive a car, I don’t use the applications in a cell phone,” says the author who writes his novels and short stories in long hand.

And then there are those who have made the transition smoothly. Radha Nair, a retired college teacher in her 60s, once a compulsive letter writer, who wrote to her family and students with equal zest, is now at home with SMS and e-mails. “Now our family has a group e-mail, otherwise it is mostly SMS and phone,” says Radha.

Though she knows letters express our deepest thoughts the best, the move towards online has been so gradual and smooth that she doesn’t remember when letter-writing ceased to be. “I am sorry to say I don’t write letters anymore. Till about five years back, I used to write to my daughters. Now even writing to my grand daughter is on e-mail,” she says. A habit since childhood, letters defined her adult life too. “My father insisted on letters. It kept the family together.”

Letters now for her now are mostly ‘Thank you’ notes, congratulatory messages or obligatory ones. “I used to keep the letters that came to me. Of late, I have disposed off quite a few. Getting rid of the old is part of life, isn’t it?”

With letter-writing losing its followers, the post office too is looking for new ways to remain relevant. “Person-to-person mails have steadily declined over the years,” says Hemant Kumar Sharma, Post Master General, Kozhikode. Post cards are now largely used for advertisements, he says, while the thrust areas for the department are services like speed post, express parcels and facilities such as ATMs in the post office.

AN ART

A homage to the art of letter-writing are couple of competitions the department conducts mostly during the postal week. “There are letter-writing competitions like the one conducted by the Universal Postal Union and another by SAARC. The response to these competitions is healthy,” says Sharma.

Those like M.T. know it is hard to bring back letter-writing. But what is left of it are bits of nostalgia.

For Linoy P. Joy, a 22-year-old engineering graduate, letter-writing was part of his hostel days and the habit has been promptly done away with. “I often think of writing a letter, sometimes just for the heck of it,” he says. “We did not have permission to use phones in the boarding school. So we wrote letters to family, friends and relatives. It was a relief to write letters and often a lot of thought went into it,” remembers Linoy.

Dancer Aswathy Srikanth says, “When I heard about the death of author Kamala Das, I remembered she had written a letter to me for my wedding. I frantically searched for it and just wanted to read and feel it. Though I remember keeping it safe, I couldn’t find it.”

THINK…DO…BE…POSITIVE…

SOURCE::::UNKNOWN…BUT THE MESSAGE IS VERY CLEAR. BY INCREASING THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE… WITHIN OURSELVES, WE TEND TO SCALE MORE HEIGHTS …… ” YES WE CAN ” SHOULD BE OUR APPROACH RATHER THAN HAVING A DOUBT OF ” CAN WE?”…

Natarajan

Harness your positive power
A negative outlook usually leads to negative experiences, but taking an optimistic approach to life,
and everything it throws your way, can reap dividends and lead to positive experiences.
Some evidence even suggests that being positive makes us happier, and happier people generally live longer!

Be in control of yourself
The biggest difference between people is their attitudes.
We can be positive or negative, and this is reflected in our enthusiasm for doing things,
or our response to certain situations. Although you cant necessarily control the things
that happen to you, you can control how you react to them.
For example, if an accident holds you up on your way to work, you are likely to be late
and quite possibly very angry — but getting angry is wasted energy.
Have a coping mechanism or strategy — just accept you are going to be late and deal with it.

Dont dwell on the past
What is gone is gone, and how you deal with the aftermath is the most important thing.
There is no point apportioning blame, either on yourself or others. You have the power to
change a situation and move on. It is so easy to say ‘I should have done things differently
with the benefit of hindsight. However, if bad things have happened, look at tomorrow
at exactly what it is a new day in which good things can happen, if you let them.

Get off to the right start
On waking, take some time to lie there and think about the day ahead and your feelings about it.
Think about your attitude to each aspect of the day and consider if there is any part that you feel
particularly negative about. If so, think about the best way to deal with the event in this situation,
but more importantly, where possible, think about how you will manage in the future — is there a way
of not putting yourself in this situation again in the future?

Enlist help
If there is any particular task that you really cant face alone, then enlist some help.
There is nothing like getting someone else on board to help out to make you feel more positive
about tackling a job be it at home or at work.
You could even try enlisting the help of your family dont be a martyr and end up feeling
miserable about your chores and responsibilities.

Be pro-active
If there are things in your day that you are truly going to struggle to be positive about,
try and work out what is it about them that makes you feel that way. Is there anything
you could do that could change your attitude towards it?
If you regularly dread your commute to work, then perhaps you could consider
a different mode of transport.
If it is your job that is the problem, then is it perhaps time to start looking for work elsewhere.

Carry happy memories
If you are ever feeling negative, nothing quite perks you up like a happy thought.
Think of the positive times in your life and when you were at your happiest.
You might be able to prompt your memory and happy feelings by carrying a cherished item
or photograph, or even by listening to a favourite song with positive associations.

Tomorrow is another day
Aside from famously being the last line in Gone with the Wind, this truism should be used in your daily approach.
However bad your previous day may have been (and you might be feeling your previous optimism didnt pay off),
it is worth persisting rather than letting yourself turn towards your dark side.

Thinking positively is about making a commitment to yourself to get the most out of your day.
It is about being enthusiastic, keeping your mind focused on important things and developing
strategies for dealing with problems.
The best advice is to do your best each day and try not to look back at things that
happen to you along the way just reflect on them in a positive learning way.

Of a person’s mood, Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be’.
It’s up to you as to how you feel, and how you act. In turn, this will affect the way in which others react towards you.
Remember, if you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always have what you’ve always had.

METRO GOES RETRO….

SOURCE::::BUSINESSLINE…..ATHENS METRO SHOWS WAYS FOR SHOWCASING A CITY”S HERITAGE ALONGWITH HIGHTECH METRO SYSTEM..

A MIX OF OLD CIVILISATION AND MODERN BUILDING TECHNIQUE….TRULY A NOVEL WAY OF ACKNOWLEDGING AND CHERISHING THE HERITAGE VALUE OF A CITY…. WILL OUR CHENNAI METRO TAKE A CUE FROM ATHENS METRO??!!

Natarajan

Athens shows how you can modernise and still keep intact an ancient city’s heritage.

I have a little surprise for you,” says Yulieth Saad, my guide in Athens, as she walks me down the steps of the neo-classical metro station of Monastiraki. “You call this a metro station?” I gasp, as I take in the gleaming granite floors and marble walls, piped music, plasma screens and high-tech ticket machines.

“That’s not all,” she says with a smug look, as she leads me to a corner. Here, in a specially-formed space encased with stones, are the remains of Eridanos, an ancient underground river that rose in the foothills of Lykebettos. The Eridanos was found during excavations, under a stone vault dating back to Emperor Hadrian’s time, during which it was turned into a sewer. To come across a long-lost river in the premises of a modern subway station — after centuries — is enchanting!

The construction of the Athens Metro began in the 1990s – it took several years to complete, and cost over $2 billion. Digging in a city with more than 6,000 years of history buried underneath proved to be a challenging task. Engineers from the Metro project, and archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture co-operated in the venture. They pored over ancient texts, and used geo-radar techniques to plot images underground, and pinpoint locations where man-made objects existed.

Five of the metro stations were in the shadow of the Acropolis, and were thought to be high-risk areas. Hence, major excavations were performed before commencing construction. Some stations were built using underground tunnels, boring through solid rock, to ensure that cultural treasures were not disturbed. The locals say that the giant ‘metro rat’ (as they called the tunnel machine) dug into the city’s past, to build its future.

Digging through the layers, the engineers often had to put away the power tools and call in the archaeologists with their brushes. They salvaged and categorised remarkable finds — remains of ancient homes, markets and temples, and even a marble statue of Goddess Athena! As they dug further, public baths, aqueducts, cisterns, myriad graves and cemeteries, and more than 50,000 artefacts emerged. Excavations for ventilation shafts revealed a huge Roman bath, and an early Roman cemetery. From a large sarcophagus to a Roman drain, the construction of the Athens Metro gave the city’s residents an insight into the topography of this great city over the ages.

Many of the historic finds are now housed in local museums. The best artefacts are displayed in the respective metro stations themselves, giving rise to ‘mini museums’. Today, seasoned commuters nonchalantly walk past the treasures displayed in the stations – they are probably used to living in a city where modernity and history co-exist in surreal harmony. Besides the display of ancient finds, contemporary art is also showcased. Greek artists have also re-created ancient stories in modern media in these spaces.

Many of the gleaming stations are offshoots of the Olympics-funded transformations, and are showpieces in their own right — glass lifts transport the elderly and disabled, walls are clean of graffiti, there are no beggars lingering around, and there are strict rules banning food and drink in the stations. My guide tells me that announcements are made in five languages if the authorities see anyone eating or drinking in the stations — all the better to drill the message in!

In the Monastiraki station, near an ancient library from the time of Emperor Hadrian, remains of settlements from 8th Century BC to the 19th century are displayed under a glass platform. At the upper concourse hall of the Syntagma station, below the Parliament Square, artefacts from different periods of Greek history, ranging from pre-historic and Byzantine to classical, are housed in huge glass cases. There are clay pipes, huge urns, ancient roads, mosaics from the 5th Century BC, and gravestones. We can also see a geological cross-section on the wall — a 42-metre stratigraph, which showcases the different layers as they were found, corresponding to a historic timeline. There is a grave from the 4th Century BC (complete with a skeleton), a few metres below a 16th century cistern. At the Acropoli Station, we can see an ancient mosaic floor, oil lamps with images from the 6th Century BC, old clay cups, and plaster casts of figures from the pediments of the Parthenon.

As they say, it is not the destination, but the journey that counts. So, if you are in Athens, get a Metro day pass (€4) and go on a truly historic ride – before you catch the train to your next destination!

U S Cops have a way with words….Ha ha ha ..

These are actual comments made by South Carolina Traffic Cops that were
taken off their car videos:

1. “You know, stop lights don’t come any redder than the one you just
went through.”

2. “Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they’re new. They’ll
stretch after you wear them a while.”

3. “If you take your hands off the car, I’ll make your birth
certificate a worthless document.” (My Favorite)

4. “If you run, you’ll only go to jail tired.”

5. “Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that’s the
speed of the bullet that’ll be chasing you.” (LOVE IT)

6. “You don’t know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can
write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?”

7. “Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don’t think
it will help. Oh, did I mention that I’m the shift supervisor?”

8. “Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I’m warning you not to do that
again or I’ll give you another ticket.”

9. “The answer to this last question will determine whether you are
drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?” (love this one too)

10. “Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you
go to ride on sky rides, eat cotton candy and ice cream and step in
monkey poop.”

11. “Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a
toaster oven.”

12. “In God we trust; all others we run through NCIC.” ( National
Crime Information Center )

13. “Just how big were those ‘two beers’ you say you had?”

14. “No sir, we don’t have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we’re
allowed to write as many tickets as we can.”

15. “I’m glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend
of yours. So you know someone who can post your bail.”

AND THE WINNER IS….

16.. “You didn’t think we give pretty women tickets? You’re right, we
don’t. Sign here.”
