PATH OF TRUE VIRTUE… A STORY IN MAHABHARATHA

How true is this story even in this modern world….. there’s a lot to be learnt from our epics….

THE ENLIGHTENED BUTCHER
(A story from Mahabharata)

This story from Mahabharata brings to light that our spiritual achievement is useless if we neglect our duties or Dharma.

Kaushika was his parents’ only son.

“Mother,” he said one day, ” I want to go off into the jungle and devote myself to spiritual studies. “

His mother said with concern, “But son, your father and I are very old. Your father is so sick he can hardly move. If you go away, what will happen to us? Who will attend to our needs?”

Kaushika did not listen. He was determined to study the Vedas. His mother cried in vain as she watched her son turn his back on her and leave for the jungle.

Eventually Kaushika acquired great mystical powers.

One afternoon, as he was meditating under a tree, a crane flew up, and perched herself on a branch above Kaushika. Some bird droppings fell on Kaushika’s head. Kaushika furiously threw a fiery gaze at the crane.

The crane immediately fell dead.

The sage felt sorry for what he had done. “How could I have allowed my anger to take over me that way?” He mourned.

Later in the day, he went to a village to beg for alms. The lady of the house asked him to wait and went to get some food. Right then her husband arrived. She immediately set aside the pot of food she was taking to the sage and went to attend her husband.

After washing his feet, giving him food, and attending to his needs, she came back out to give the alms to the sage. The sage was very insulted. “You put your husband before a pious sage? Do you know the power of a Brahmin?”

She calmly replied, “Yes, a true Brahmin is he who has mastered his anger. Please do not threaten me, I am not a crane that will die by your fiery gaze.”

The sage was amazed. “How does she know about the crane?” he wondered.

The lady continued, “Oh holy one! You are a learned Brahmin but you have not understood the truth about virtue. If you want to be enlightened, go to Dharmavyadha who lives in Mathura. Any one will tell you where he lives.”

The sage thanked the lady and hurried to Mathura. “He must be a great and learned sage indeed,” Kaushika thought to himself.

But when he finally reached Dharmavyadaha’s place, he found it to be a butcher shop!

A very ordinary looking man came out and said, “Welcome holy one. I am Dharmavyadaha, the man you seek.”

“How can a butcher be spiritually enlightened?” Kaushika asked in amazement.

Dharmavyadaha smiled and said with compassion, “I know the story of the crane and of the woman who sent you here. Come, let us go to my house. “

The sage could not contain himself and blurted out, “But butchering animals is such a sinful profession! Are you not ashamed?”

“I am not,” the butcher calmly said. “I am engaged in a family trade. I work hard and honestly at it. There is no reason for me to be ashamed of my work!”

“Holy one,” continued the butcher. “If I do injury to other creatures, so do you as you did to the crane. “

“As we walk on the soil, we are trampling on numerous creatures. Nor is the air devoid of creatures.”

“You see that farmer tilling the land? He is killing so many animals that thrive under the soil.”

They reached the butcher’s house. The butcher’s wife was doing her house hold chores and his two boys were playing.

The butcher introduced the sage to his wife and boys.

Then the butcher entered the house and touched his parents’ feet.

“Here is a learned Brahmin who has come from a far-off place.” the butcher told his old father.

“Welcome, holy one,” the father said.

Before leaving the room, the butcher remarked, “My parents are my Gods. My wife and my children attend to them with devotion and love. We consider caring for them to be our greatest duty.”

“In doing one’s duty cheerfully, lies true virtue. This is what the dutiful wife sent you to learn.”

“Oh learned one!” the butcher continued, “You have run away from your responsibilities and deserted your aged father and mother. Spiritual achievement is useless if one has neglected one’s Dharma, or duties.”

The sage remembered his mother crying, “Who will look after us when you are gone my son?”

The sage apologized, “You have shown me the path of true virtue, the true meaning of Dharma, Oh pious one. I am deeply indebted to you.”

Kaushika immediately returned to his parents and served them lovingly till the end of their days.

INTERCONNECTIVITY OF CHENNAI PUBLIC TRANSPORT.. WILL IT BE A DREAM ONLY?

I Fully endorse the views expressed by MR. MUTHIAH in his MADRAS MISCELLANY ON the integeration of public transport . I am of the firm opinion that facilities like METRO and MONO sans PROPER AND PUCCA interconnectivity between the existing public transport modes like city buses, EMU suberbun trains and MRTS will be of no use and serve no meaningful purpose in reducing congestion on our city road. I am sure CUMTA will understand the ground realities and findout ways and means for integerating the upcoming METRO RAIL with the existing public transport modes without any further loss of time…..
ANY further delay in this vital decision making will ultimately lead to chaos in city roads…. Because already METRO has occupied a chunk of available space in our public roads including arterial roads like Anna Salai….If we imagine a scenario where interconnectivity continue to remain a DREAM only, and all public transport continue to ply on parallel lines , even after commissioning of CHENNAI METRO TRANSPORT and MONO Lines , it will be a real nightmare for chennai people!!!!!!

CUMTA SHOUD TAKE A CALL RIGHT NOW ON THIS IMPORTANT ASPECT RATHER THAN WAITING FURTHER…. ARMED WITH SUITABLE LEGISLATIVE POWERS FROM 2010, CUMTA SHOUD WAKEUP ATLEAST NOW >>>>>>

I request likeminded chennaites and NGOS to spread this message and create an awareness in the Public Forum for making our chennai city road congestion free….

If there is will …there is way… that is what is the need of hour for CUMTA. Let us hope to realise our dream soon.

Madras Miscellany: Integrating transport…IN THE HINDU
BY
S. MUTHIAH

I am told that legislation was passed in 2010 entitled the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority Act and an organisation called CUMTA, in abbreviation, was set up. Its aim was to integrate the City’s bus, train, suburban railway, Metro Rail, MRTS — now it will have to include Monorail, I suppose — and bus services to make travel easy for passengers through an interconnectivity of these services that CUMTA will ensure. In the two years since the Act was passed, we have, however, been unable to get an interconnectivity in the existing services, namely, the Metropolitan bus service, suburban train services, MRTS and the mainline railway services. A single ticket for a journey in Greater Madras, assuring a hop, step and a jump between one service and another, remains a dream. Just as it has been for decades.

My words of despair above have been prompted by the latest news that a Chennai Comprehensive Transport Study plan (Yes, another one!) commissioned by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has been handed over to CUMTA. This three-phase plan for Greater Madras envisages Rs. 82,000 crore (forget over-runs) being spent over the next decade and more, with nearly Rs. 53,000 crore targeted to be spent before 2015. The study promises that, with this expenditure, commuter comfort will be assured through an inter-connected urban transport system where every transport authority will not ignore the others but will work amicably with them for the common good. That’s manna for the dreams of commuters, with a promise that they will all be pleasant strongly implied.

Sadly, I tend to be sceptical about many of these studies and the promises they hold. Since I’m addicted to looking back, just let’s look at two short stretches of interconnectivity — or, rather, the lack of them — that I can remember ever since as a child I dreamed of being an engine-driver…and that was long, long ago, though over those decades I’ve heard it said often enough that Central Station and Egmore Station, as well as Beach Station and Royapuram Station, will be connected. Well, I’m still waiting.

Let’s look at the kind of wait I’m talking about. The Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company was formed in 1908 and took over Central Station which had been opened in 1873 by the Madras Railway Company and which had been made the MRC’s main station in 1907. The MRC’s Royapuram railway station had long before been inaugurated as the South’s first railway station in 1856.

Meanwhile, the Trichinopoly-headquartered South India Railway Company was established in 1890 and made Egmore Railway Station its northern terminus in 1908. With both stations opening just a year apart, that was when talk first began of linking Madras Central and Egmore. I’m still waiting for the link, just as I had 65 years ago when I had to travel from Colombo to the old undivided Punjab and back and had to hop stations in Madras!

As for that other link, Beach and Royapuram, it was in 1931 that the South Indian Railway began its Tambaram-Beach electric suburban train services. But how did/does the traveller get to Royapuram (for factories, in points north) which was still active in those days — and promises to be active again?

All these services now belongs the Southern Railway which took them over on April 1, 1951. And Southern Railways has been talking from time to time about all these linkages becoming a reality. They’re still talking. And the traveller is still waiting. Will the Southern Railway now get around to talking to CUMTA and will the travellers’ waiting end in a couple of decades?

SIMPLE THREE WORDS CREATE WONDERS …..

source…unknown…

Read it in Net .. let me share with you all

Natarajan.

There are many things that you can do to strengthen your relationships.
Often the most effective thing you can do involves saying just THREE WORDS…
When spoken sincerely, these statements often have the power to develop new friendships,
deepen old ones and even bring healing to relationships that have soured.
The following THREE WORDED phrases can be tools to help develop every relationship.

LET ME HELP:
Good friends see a need and then try to fill it.
When they see a hurt they do what they can to heal it.
Without being asked, they jump in and help out.

I UNDERSTAND YOU:
People become closer and enjoy each other more when the other person
accepts and understands them.
Letting your spouse know – in so many little ways – that you understand them,
is one of the most powerful tools for healing your relationship.
And this can apply to any relationship.

I RESPECT YOU:
Respect is another way of showing love.
Respect demonstrates that another person is a true equal.
If you talk to your children as if they were adults you will strengthen the bonds
and become closer friends. This applies to all interpersonal relationships.

I MISS YOU :

Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples simply and sincerely said to each other I miss you. This powerful affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved.
Consider how important you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call
from your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say I miss you.

MAYBE YOU ARE RIGHT:
This phrase is very effective in diffusing an argument.
The implication when you say maybe you’re right is the humility of admitting,
maybe I am wrong. Lets face it. When you have an argument with someone,
all you normally do is solidify the other persons point of view.
They, or you, will not likely change their position and you run the risk of seriously
damaging the relationship between you.
Saying maybe you’re right can open the door to explore the subject more.
You may then have the opportunity to express your view in a way that is
understandable to the other person.

PLEASE FORGIVE ME:
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people would admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are vulnerable to faults, foibles and failures.
A man should never be ashamed to own up that he has been in the wrong,
which is saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterdaY

I THANK YOU :
Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy.
People who enjoy the companionship of good,
close friends are those who do’nt take daily courtesies for granted.
They are quick to thank their friends for their many expressions of kindness.
On the other hand, people whose circle of friends is severely constricted often
do not have the attitude of gratitude.

COUNT ON ME:
A friend is one who walks in when others walk out.
Loyalty is an essential ingredient for true friendship.
It is the emotional glue that bonds people.
Those that are rich in their relationships tend to be steady
and true friends.
When troubles come, a good friend is there indicating
you can count on me.

I”LL BE THERE:
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night,
to take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down
some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase
I”ll be there.
Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give.
When we are truly present for other people, important things
happen to them and us.
We are renewed in love and friendship.
We are restored emotionally and spiritually.
Being there is at the very core of civility.

GO FOR IT :
We are all unique individuals.
Do’nt try to get your friends to conform to your ideals.
Support them in pursuing their interests, no matter how far out they seem to you.
God has given everyone dreams, dreams that are unique to that person only.
Support and encourage your friends to follow their dreams.
Tell them to go for it.

I LOVE YOU:
Perhaps the most important three words that you can say.
Telling someone that you truly love them satisfies a person
deepest emotional needs.
The need to belong, to feel appreciated and to be wanted.
Your spouse, your children, your friends and you, all need to hear
those three little words:” I love you.”

The three words mentioned above have got a tremendous effect in generating a positive energy and inturn building a solid and sweet relationship between friends and family circle. Let us try this technique!!!!

ONE more word not listed above …” SEE YOU SOON !!!..”…

STOP BLAMING SOMEONE OR SOMETHING FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!

SOURCE…UNKNOWN…. But a true reflection of how we react in different circumstances…. If we are able to enhance our acceptance level with good reasoning , we will be generating positive reaction …. which in turn will reduce the frequency of anger within us ….

may be that we can try… nothing wrong in trying and then practicing for our own benefit… is it not?

Natarajan

When someone is doing something or is about to do something, in a way we don’t want it to be done and when we are not able to accept it, we become angry.

However, When someone is doing something or is about to do something, in a way we don’t want it to be done – and we are able to accept it- we remain tolerant.

When someone has something which we don’t have, or someone is able to produce the results which we are not able to produce- and we are not able to accept it we become jealous.

When someone has something which we don’t have, or someone is able to produce the results which we are not able to produce and we are able to accept it we get inspired.

Then emotional equation is quite simple.
Something + Acceptance = Positive Emotion
Something + Non Acceptance = Negative Emotion

So, it is not ‘something’ or ‘someone’ who is making us feel positive or negative, but it is our ‘acceptance’ or ‘non acceptance’ of something or someone, which is making us feel positive or negative.

It isn’t the world but thequality of our response to the world that determines the quality of our emotions. Next time we feel disturbed with a negative emotion, instead of asking who or what is disturbing us, we will examine who or what we are resisting (not accepting) that is causing this disturbance in us. We will replace resistance (non acceptance) with acceptance, and the negative emotion will turn into a positive one.

Emotional management begins by stopping to blame that ‘something’ or ‘someone’ and starting to take the responsibility to respond life with ‘acceptance’.

Control your ‘ ANGER ‘, because it is just one letter away from ‘ D’ANGER’.

PERMISSION FOR FILM “MAHABHARATHA”-

>>>>
>>>>To: The Writer, Film Director & Film Producer, Mumbai
>>>>
>>>>Ref: Film story submitted by you, regarding financing of films by Government of India , Your letter dt. ………… . ……… .
>>>>
>>>>The undersigned is directed to refer the above letter and state that the Government has examined your proposal for financing a film called ”Mahabharat’ . The Very High Level Committee constituted for this purpose has been in consultation with the Human Rights Commission, National Commission for Women and Labour Commission, in addition to various Ministries and State Governments and have formed definitive opinions about the script. Their observations are as below:
>>>>
>>>>1. In the script submitted by you it is shown that there were two sets of cousins, namely, the Kauravas, numbering one hundred, and the Pandavas, numbering five. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has pointed out that these numbers are high, well above the norm prescribed for families by them It is brought to your kind attention that when the Government is spending huge amounts for promoting family planning, this will send wrong signals to the public. Therefore, it is recommended that there may be only three Kauravas and one Pandava.
>>>>
>>>>2. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has raised an issue whether it is suitable to depict kings and emperors in this democratic age. Therefore, it is suggested that the Kauravas may be depicted as Honourable Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and the Pandava maybe depicted as Honourable Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). The ending of the film shows the victory of the said Pandavas over the said Kauravas. The ending may be suitably modified so that neither of the Honourable Members of Parliament are shown as being inferior to the other.
>>>>
>>>>3. The Ministry of Science and Technology has observed that the manner of birth of Kauravas is suggestive of human cloning, a technology banned in India . This may be changed to normal birth.
>>>>
>>>>4. The National Commission for Women has objected that the father of Pandavas, one Sri Pandu is depicted as bigamous, and also there is only one wife for the Pandavas in common. Therefore suitable changes maybe made in the said script so that the said Sri Pandu is not depicted as bigamous. However, with the reduction in number of Pandavas as suggested above, the issue of polyandry can be addressed without further trouble.
>>>>
>>>>5. The Commission for the Physically Challenged has observed that the portrayal of the visually impaired character ‘Dhritharastra’ is derogatory. Therefore the said character may not be shown as visually impaired.
>>>>
>>>>6. The Department of Women and Child Development have highlighted that the public disrobing of one female character called ‘Draupadi’ is objectionable and derogatory to women in general. Further the Home Ministry anticipates that depiction of such scenes may create law and order problem and at the same time invite strong protests from the different women forums. Such scenes may also invite penal action under SITA (Suppression of Immoral Traffic Act), therefore they may be avoided and deleted from the film.
>>>>
>>>>7. It is felt that showing the Pandava and the Kauravas as gamblers will be anti-social and counter-productive as it might encourage gambling. Therefore, the said Pandava and Kauravas may be shown to have engaged in horse racing. (Hon. Supreme Court has held horse racing not to be gambling)
>>>>
>>>>8. The Pandavas are shown as working in the King Virat’s employment without receiving any salary. According to the Human Rights Commission, this amounts to bonded labour and may attract provisions of The Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976. This may be corrected at once.
>>>>
>>>>9. In the ensuing war, one character by name Sri Abhimanyu has been shown as fighting. The National Labour Commission has observed that, war being a hazardous industry, and the said character being 16 years old, this depiction will be construed as a case of child labour. Also there is no record of his being paid any compensation. This may also be deemed to be violatory of the provisions of The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and Minimum Wages Act, 1948. Such references in the film may be removed.
>>>>
>>>>10. The character ‘Sri Krishna’ has been depicted as wearing a peacock feather. The peacock is our National Bird and wearing dresses made from peacock feather is an offence under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. This may not be depicted.
>>>>
>>>>11. Smt Maneka Gandhi has raised very serious objection for using any elephants or horses in war scenes, since there is every scope for mistreatment and injury to the said animals. The provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1890 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Act, 1960 would be applicable in the instant case. Suitable changes may be made in the script to address the objections raised.
>>>>
>>>>12. In pursuance of the Memorandum of Ministry of Finance regarding austerity measures, it is informed that in the battle field sequences, only ten soldiers may be allowed for each side. Also, all the characters may be shown to have obtained a valid licence under the Arms Act, 1959 as well as the Indian Arms Act, 1878.You are therefore requested to modify the script along the lines indicated above and resubmit it to the undersigned at the earliest for reconsideration.

Life Lessons From IPL Cricket

Watching IPL is fun; the glory and glamour it brought with it for many eclipses the misery that it caused for a few (thinking of Lalit Modi and Sasi Taroor!!). The revolution it made in the history of cricket made it reach to the masses than ever before. It was packaged so appetizingly for the business houses to embrace, and when looked deeper there are more to experientially learn from what we see at IPL that will not only benefit the corporate houses but an ordinary man alike, as lessons of life!

Lesson 1 : Enjoy the moment: As spectators, life is a game unfolding before you as you watch it from the gallery of time; enjoy each moment of it, regardless of whether your ecstatic face is projected on the big screen for the whole world to see. Be yourself and listen to the feelings and emotions inside you and let them flow as genuine as they are – irrespective of how you are conditioned by your ego and the roles you play, as long as it is synchronized with the social norms; why do we sometimes wait till the camera is zoomed in on us to display our exuberance and smile from ear to ear, and keep a straight face rest of the time! Do it anyway, can’t we? When your performance in life is excelling the ordinary, outstanding from the rest of the pack or become worthy of recognition, the camera of the world will come looking for you and project you, and so will the attention of those who matters most. All you need to do is to perform your best!

Lesson 2: Lead from center-out: Old adage is to lead from front, and in time it is conveniently taken out of context and abused by leaders, by putting their nose in everything assuming it as their responsibilities in spite of having an army of experts who can deliver better. Dhoni or Vettori may be the captains of their teams but for obvious reasons they do not insist that they be the opening batsmen, thinking, who else can be better than the captain to open the game and be the first for the cameramen to zoom on!! Batting positions and bowling orders are determined as a strategy of the game and the strength of individuals; your role as a leader is to facilitate that engagement and provide a direction and purpose, reasons too; the team is bigger than the individual, and it is only wise enough to come as 6th batsman if that’s where you will fit for the best interest of the team.

Lesson 3: Possibilities In Life: The game offers you wide possibilities to play unconventional strokes that you had always been instructed not to play; your imagination is the only limitation to how well you can perform, which is why de Villiers could score a six with a reverse scoop, however unconventional it may have appeared. Before you are the spectators keen to watch you play your best; inventions and innovations you will bring about will rise to become an entertainment for the spectators, and they will celebrate colourfully with our cheer-leaders in our neighbourhood.

Lesson 4: Maintain Integrity: If you had stood your ground with integrity and character, you will always find a space to be around meaningfully, like Anil Kumble, with yet another opportunity to give back to the game of life and bring around a new generation of game players with character and purpose. Should the game and glory get into your head the only way left is to perhaps relax in a luxurious villa beside the backwaters of Cochin and compose music for a music band, or let go the palaces in Rajasthan and muse in the streets of England reminiscing the good old days spent in yachts and chartered flights tweeting life away!

Life is a beautiful game where everyone has a role to play, and the role changes. It’s great to be able to be at the center of the pitch and be in control, and play the game out till the allotted time; play well, every day is your season of IPL – Integrated Power of Living!

BE LIKE A PENCIL !!!!

SOURCE.. MESSAGE RECD FROM ONE OF MY FRIENDS THIS MORNING THRO MAIL… A SIMPLE LESSON CONVEYED WITH PENCIL.. YOU MAY LIKE TO READ AND PASS IT ON …

Natarajan

A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter and he asked her if she is writing a story about him. His grandmother stopped writing her letter and told her grandson “I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the Pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this Pencil when you grow up”. Intrigued, the boy looked at the Pencil. It didn’t seem very special and he remarked “But it’s just like any other Pencil I’ve ever seen”, “That depends on how you look at things” said the grandmother –“It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world”. First quality: You are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God, and He always guides us according to His will. Second quality: Now and then, I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but after wards, it’s much sharper. So you, too, must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows, because they will make you a better person. Third quality: The pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing; it helps to keep us on the road to justice. Fourth quality: What really matters in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you. Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark in just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action. Great truths lie in simple things!!
