Whether at home or at work, most of us talk a lot which could be termed as trash or slander or rubbish.When a group of people meet, often the conversation leads to someone who is not present at the scene . Suddenly everybody begins to slander that person . Most of what is talked is not true. But who is bothered ? There is no one to question . This generally leads to a lot of friction and misunderstanding in relationships. But who cares !?!

Now, let us listen to Socrates….one of the wisest men of all times…… One day, the great philosopher came upon a friend of him who ran up to him excitedly and said ” Socrates, do you know what i heard about one of your students ?” “Wait a minute.”, Socrates said. “Before you talk to me about my student, let us take a moment to filter what you are going to say. The 1ST filter is TRUTH. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are going to tell me is TRUE ?”
“NO”, the man said.. “Actually, i just heard about it and……”. “Alright” said Socrates “so you do not know if it is true.”

“Now , let us try the 2nd filter…GOODNESS…” .”Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?”.
“NO. on the contrary….” said the friend. Socrates continued ” you want to tell me something bad about my student , eventhough you are not certain it is true.”. The friend shrugged and embarassed.

Socrates continued ” you may still pass the test because there is a 3rd filter…USEFULNESS….”Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me ?”…….”NO not really ” , the friend said.

Socrates concluded ” If what you want to tell me is neither TRUE nor GOOD and USEFUL . why tell it to me at all???!!!”

Moral of the story… Judicious application of THREE FILTERS OF SOCRATES can certainly help us lift and enrich ourselves with more and more happiness and harmony.
