Striped Mountains in China

It’s hard to believe that this collection of colorfully striped mountains is real. Sure, some amount of photo manipulation may have awoken the rich hues, but even the un-retouched images paint a pretty picture. Located in China’s Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park, these “rainbow mountains” are yet another wondrous example of what Mother Nature can create. The formations’ stripes are most vivid after a rainstorm or as the sun enters or leaves the sky.

With enough time, anything is possible–even this 400-square-kilometer section of striped mountains. 24 million years ago, red sandstone and mineral deposits formed layers that compressed and underwent metamorphism, speckling the Chinese landscape with a “layer cake” of blues, reds and yellows. Erosion worked against the formation, carving cliffs, valleys and natural pillars into the earth, adding the array of textures and patterns that now characterize the region’s mountains.

Danxia topography refers to landforms in China that form due to the ways that erosion, weather and uplift transform red sandstone. These unique geological features have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, thanks to the striped mountains’ great natural beauty and their illustration of the forces and processes that created them.

Passenger Takes Photo of Worker Applying TAPE on Engine Shell….!!!

A passenger on board an easyJet flight was shocked to see an airport worker applying tape to the engine shell moments before take-off.

The passenger snapped a picture after spotting the worker applying the tape over a join in the turbine casing.

The image has been widely shared on the internet, most recently being posted on Reddit.

The man is pictured in a fluorescent vest measuring up a line of tape to circle around the top of the engine.

But, contrary to popular belief, it is not duct tape. It is believed the item is actually speed tape, widely used in aviation to carry out quick repairs on flights so as to avoid delays.

Speed tape is an aluminised pressure-sensitive tape used to do minor repairs on aircraft and racing cars. It is used as a temporary repair material until a more permanent repair can be carried out.

It has an appearance similar to duct tape, for which it is sometimes mistaken, but its adhesive is capable of sticking on an airplane fuselage or wing at high speeds, hence the name.

As online commentators discussed why tape was being used on an aeroplane, one user wrote why this might happen.

‘Without the tape, high-speed air can get in between the engine and the fairing and cause vibration or throw off the balance of the engine.

‘Under rare circumstances the fairing can be torn off by the air pressure forming on the leading edge.

‘The tape closes this gap safely, immediately reducing the chance of mechanical failure. Then they can get the plane fixed at the next convenience or service schedule.’

However an easyJet spokesperson told MailOnline Travel that in this instance, it was not used for repair work.

‘The high speed metallic tape is in place as a result of some cosmetic work that is required to the aircraft paintwork,’ the spokesperson said.

‘It is nothing structural and in no way compromises the safety of the aircraft.’

Commenting on the photo, a safety expert at the Civil Aviation Authority told MailOnline Travel: ‘The image appears to show aluminium tape being applied to the aircraft.

‘This tape is used as part of work to make minor repairs and is very common across the aviation sector and has been for many years now.’

It is not known at which airport this maintenance work took place.

WHEN flight attendant Ericka Paige Diehl sat on the edge of a plane’s engine and happily posed for a photograph, she had no idea she was about to land in hot water.

While it’s a photo that many other crew members before her have taken, this time things were different. Because a passenger who was waiting to board the plane at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was watching on, shocked.

They made a note of the 41-year-old Spirit Airlines flight attendant’s name and looked up her Facebook page, where several similar photos had been uploaded.

Next, they then contacted the news website ABC 7, asking if it was part of a new pre-flight checklist and whether it was legal.

When first contacted by ABC 7, Diehl said she didn’t know anything about the photos, then later said she wasn’t “at liberty to discuss them”.

Within a few minutes, they had vanished from her page.

Less than 24 hours later, her entire page was deleted. And now the airline is investigating, with spokesman Paul Berry saying it will take appropriate action.

“The activity portrayed in the photo absolutely goes against Spirit policy,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Chicago Department of Aviation said: “In order to access the tarmac, an individual must be properly badged and/or under escort”. It’s not yet known if Diehl was authorised to be there.
