KUMARI KANTAM…..A LOST CONTINENT…?

Source::::Madras Miscellany…THE HINDU….BY.SHRI.Muthiah ….

Did Kumarikantam (in the Tamil), also known as Lemuria (in English), really exist? I was provoked into thinking about it again, on recently reading a lecture that Dr. S. Gopalakrishnan had delivered at a Tamil Nadu History Congress.

I’ve always thought this lost continent existed, stretching from Australia to Madagascar, and that it fragmented, much of it lost to the sea, due to at least one huge tsunami (there are those who believe there were three). My belief is based on what I see as linkages between the Aborigines of Australia, the tribals of Papua-New Guinea and parts of Indonesia, the Veddahs of Sri Lanka, some of the tribals of South India, and the people of Madagascar. But I’m no social scientist, anthropologist, linguist or geologist, so my theory is just an article of faith. Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s paper however cites several scientists who hold passionate views on the subject.

A British view expressed by a Philip Sclater in the 19th Century felt the lost continent stretched from India to Madagascar where are found the largest number of species of lemurs, an animal that, it is claimed, lent its name to Lemuria. The Tamil Dravidianists latched on to this theory in 1903 and hold that Lemuria was Kumarikantam, the ancient home of the Tamil people. Kumarikantam, as some of these theorists see it, was shaped like an India turned on its head, with both peninsular portions merging. The southern land stretched nearly 2,800 km further south from today’s Kanniyakumari, some claim.

These theorists, led by Dr. E. Mathivannan, date Kumarikantam to 50,000 years ago and hold that Lemuria was submerged 16,000 years ago. In what became the ‘new’ South India, the Second Tamil Sangam flourished 6000 years ago and the Third about 3,800 years ago, established by a Pandya king. Maraimalai Adigal was one of the first Tamil scholars to proclaim the existence of Kumarikantam and was supported by others like Thiru V. Kalyanasundram, but those like J. Nallaswami Pillai had their reservations. Ancient Sangam poetry, however, refers to threats by the ocean and consequent loss of land and lives.

Several ocean studies in more recent times have shown that beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean there exist ridges and valleys, high mountain peaks and low hills, a landscape very like a land formation. Is this subterranean geography evidence of Lemuria that is claimed by many as Kumarikantam? Prof. Gopalakrishnan refuses to take sides, but concludes, “Nothing should be rejected out of hand just because concrete evidence is not available. Traditions are not meaningless. They are part of civilisation’s institutional memory. They should be given due attention and weightage. The efforts to validate the data on lost civilisations need a multidisciplinary approach…”

To unveil K. Kamaraj’s statue in October 1961, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made an exception to his policy of not unveiling statues of living persons

The statue of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj near Gymkhana Club on Anna Salai was in focus on Sunday, the 109 birth anniversary of the leader.

Various leaders and members of the public alike chose to pay homage by garlanding the statue. But, what is less known is that the statue has a special history.

To unveil the statue in October 1961, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made an exception to his policy of not unveiling statues of living persons. Kamaraj, was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu then.

Addressing a function organised by the Chennai Corporation to unveil the statue, Prime Minister Nehru had explained why he had departed from his general policy. Praising Kamaraj’s leadership qualities, he had said: “Mr Kamaraj is a notable example of a real representative of the people, grown from the people, with extraordinary capacity, ability and devotion to his task,” according to a report published by The Hindu on October 11, 1961.

Describing Kamaraj as “an unusual type of leader,” Prime Minister Nehru had pointed out that leaders had generally been those who belonged to “the caste of English-knowing people.” But, Kamaraj did not belong to “this caste.” Nehru had added that Kamaraj knew English enough to understand it, but did not have any formal education in English.

Referring to his admiration for the city, Prime Minister Nehru said: “I would like the city of Madras to grow and prosper because it is a fine and beautiful city and such a city should not suffer from lack of water, of all things.”

TAX PLANNING OR FINANCIAL PLANNING …WHAT IS NEEDED ?

SOURCE:::
Tax saving is not enough
Concentrate on investments even if it implies some tax liability
Arvind Rao / in BUSINESS STANDARD….

WRITER IS RIGHT IN SAYING THAT FINANCIAL PLANNING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TAX PLANNING …HOW???….READ FURTHER…

NATARAJAN

Most individuals we come across, are more worried about saving taxes than saving for their future.
However, in the pursuit to save taxes, individuals more often than not, ignore financial planning. Many are of the opinion that planning their personal finances can be accorded a lower priority, after tax planning. They believe that financial planning is relatively simpler and thus, can be done on their own while tax planning isn’t that easy.

If you look up for the definition of tax planning, Investopedia says it includes planning of income, expenditure, tax filings and common deductions. It adds that while tax planning is an important element in any financial plan, it is important to not let the ‘tax’ tail wag the financial ‘dog’, as the same may turn out to be counter-productive. Tax planning and financial planning share a lot in common. Here’s how the two compare.
Saving taxes
Every taxpayer wants to pay the least amount as taxes and one of the first motives of tax planning is to achieve this. In contrast, the motive of financial planning is to help individuals save money.
Over the last few years, saving money has become difficult with the increasing optimism about spending among the youngsters and middle-aged population. Soaring inflation has resulted in prices of essentials going up and higher standard of living, which implies higher monthly budgets for living and leisure expenses. Education costs have seen no recession over the last five years. More number of individuals are taking loans and so that many working families are servicing the same, having left with no room to save.
In such circumstances, financial planning helps individuals to plan and start saving money little by little, by using various strategies like expenditure management, debt management, accelerated savings plans, and so on. There is no point in only saving taxes if it doesn’t help in increasing savings.
Reducing taxes
If paying taxes is inevitable, tax planning often helps individuals with ways to reduce the liability. Similarly, financial planning is a great tool to reduce the uncertainty around an individual’s monetary capability for achieving their aspirations in future.
Typically, financial goals include a new car, a house or a bigger one, foreign holiday, higher career planning, children’s education, financial independence after retirement, parents and so on. A comprehensive financial planning helps enhance an individual’s quality of life and increase satisfaction by reducing uncertainty about the availability of resources for their future needs. It helps in instilling a sense of freedom from financial worries obtained by anticipating the future fund inflow, expenses and providing for the same. Simply put, planning your finances help take charge of and deal better with future economic uncertainties.
Making investments to save taxes
Planning ones investments to save taxes is something that every taxpayer undertakes at the beginning of each financial year and also during the last 3 months of the year. However, financial planning aims to make investments to help achieve various financial objectives around the year.
Discipline is the key, when it comes to investing for ones objectives, that is, future. Even without financial planning, many invest their money into instruments like fixed deposits, mutual funds, shares, property, but allocating these investments as per future objectives is of prime importance. An individual may have a higher savings ratio but in the absence of a clearly chalked out map, investments have no meaning in the long run.
Allocating investments in accordance to goals would include factoring the time horizon available and the risk appetite of each objective. This would help in advising the right kind of investments. Say a 28 years old is looking to accumulate money for downpayment of his new house in the next 2 years, he should not touch equities, although his risk appetite should be high in this age.
Reducing income tax liability
One of the 3 pillars of tax-planning is the income-based approach, wherein strategies are used to plan the receivable income in ways to reduce the tax incidence. A financial planner seeks to help an individual increase his disposable income, which need not always mean higher returns on your savings. It also implies how judiciously income earned is spent / invested. Not deploying premiums for a policy, which is unsuitable for an individual, on a planner’s advice should be looked at as a measure of higher disposable income available.
Many times very high income earners are seen struggling for money at the end of a month. Such situations need something beyond traditional tax-planning.
To summarise, financial planning is more holistic than tax planning and both are equally challenging. If understanding tax laws is difficult, dealing with uncertainties in your financial life is definitely not easy. Thus, if tax planning helps reduce 30 per cent tax burden, financial planning is how best you carry the rest 70 per cent on your shoulders.

QUOTABLE QUOTES….FOR ALL WALKS OF LIFE

Be what you want to be… not what others want to see. – Never try to impress others. If you start trying impressing others, you will act (you’re cheating not only yourself but also the persons whom you’re trying to impress). Life is to live, not to act.

To be happy in life, you must learn the difference between what you want and what you need.

If a drop of water falls in lake there is no identity. But if it falls on a leaf of lotus it shines like a
pearl. So choose the best place where you would shine.

When you are successful, your well wishers know who you are. When you are unsuccessful, you know who your well wishers are.

Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.

It is great confidence in a friend to tell him your faults; greater to tell his/her

Most courageous person is the one who accepts his/her mistakes & weakness.

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference.

Never take some one for granted, Hold every person Close to your Heart because you might wake up one day and realize that you have lost a diamond while you were too busy collecting stones.” Remember this always in life.

Some people think that to be strong is to never feel pain. In Reality the strong people are the ones who feel it, understand it, and accept it.

My pain may be the reason for somebody’s laugh. But my laugh should never be the reason for somebody’s pain.

Never expect things to happen. Struggle and make them happen. Never expect yourself to be given a good value. Create a value of your own.

TOP TEN FACTS ABOUT BRAIN !!!!

1.80% of the brain is water. This means that it is
important that you remain properly hydrated for
the sake of your mind.

2.Our brain is more active at night as compared to
day.

3. Information travels along neurons at different
speeds. This is why sometimes you can recall
information instantly, and sometimes it takes a little
longer.

4.Our brain makes up only 2% of our body weight
yet it requires 20% of oxygen that enters our
bloodstream.

5. Alcohol interferes with brain processes by
weakening connections between neurons.

6. Laughing at a joke is no simple task as it require s
activity in five different areas of the brain.

7. Differences in brain weight and size do not equal
differences in mental ability. The weight of Albert
Einstein’s brain was 1,230 grams that is less than
an average weight of the human brain.

8. A living brain is so soft you could cut it with a
table knife.

9. There are about 100,000 miles of blood vessels
in the brain.

10. The brain can live for 4 to 6 minutes without
oxygen, and then it begins to die. No oxygen for 5
to 10 minutes will result in permanent brain
damage.

“OTHERS HAVE GOD..WE HAVE TATAS..”…..SAY MUMBAI BLAST VICTIMS…

SOURCE::::REDIFF.COM NEWSREPORT……TAJ PUBLIC SERVICE WELFARE TRUST IS UNIQUE IN RENDERING SERVICE TO THE NEEDY WITHOUT FANFARE AND MEDIA GLARE!!!!.. A NEWS REPORT ON THEIR ACTIVITIES TAKEN OUT FROM REDIFF.COM SITE IS SHARED WITH YOU.

Natarajan

A year after the 13/7 blasts, rediff.com correspondents fanned out across Mumbai to trace the forgotten victims. In the ensuing conversations, a mention of the financial assistance given by the Tata group emerged as common thread. A Ganesh Nadar, who then set out to find out about Tata’s involvement with the terror victims, came back amazed and inspired. Here’s his report.

Deepak S Bhatia’s visiting card does not give any designation, but he is truly the man in charge.

Far away from the media glare, Bhatia and others in the Taj Public Service Welfare Trust have been selflessly going about providing relief to hundreds of terror victims who have been forgotten in officialdom and time.

Set up in the aftermath of the November 26, 2008, bloodbath in Mumbai, the trust provides monthly sustenance or loans or set up endowments to relieve economic and social hardships, to help terror victims rebuild their life.

Following the 13/7 blasts in three of Mumbai’s crowded localities, the trust got hold of a list of victims from the city collectorate. Counsellors, drawn from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, then met every one of them.

The relief package for every victim was charted out as per their needs; there is no fixed amount of compensation.

Aiming to build sustainable livelihood, the trust gives a monthly amount for those who have lost their bread winner. It also reimburses all medical expenses of the victims.

Post 26/11, the NGO realised that the school and college dropout levels among kin of terror victims had gone up. Hence, they now also finance educational requirements — be it the school fees of class 3 student or fees for attending medical college.

Says Bhatia, “We are in touch with hundreds of schools across the country. We have spoken to the principals directly and assured them that the fees will be paid by us. This year we have already paid for the entire year.”

If the child is weak in any particular subject, the trust also pays for tuitions.

“We also give the kids money for books, uniforms, shoes, umberella, geometry boxes, pencils, pens, school bag and anything else they need for school The idea is that the bread winner would have bought all this and the Tatas do not want the child to lose anything by his absence.”

Namdev lost both his limbs in the 13/7 blasts. The NGO first gave him a Jaipur foot. But when they realised that it was not quite helping him, they provided him with prosthetic limbs. He is 85 per cent fit today. They are also trying to find a job for him near his home in suburban Khar.

Besides, the talso offers vocational training.

They trained 60 youth affected in the 26/11 attacks in the hospitality industry for three months.

“Now 55 of them are working in our hotels,” says Bhatia, adding that the same is now being provided to youths affected by the 13/7 blasts.

The students will be educated at Aurangabad for three months after which HR personnel will conduct interviews. Then based on the location of the trainee, he or she will be assigned to work in one of the Taj properties.

One man, who received bullet injuries in the 26/11 attacks, now makes spare parts for Kirloskar tractors. The Taj Trust helped him buy a van to deliver his goods. His daughter graduated in commerce and then underwent hospitality training. She was later employed at Tata’s Ginger hotel in Pune.

For the terror victim’s family, the trust signs out monthly cheques. The cheques are initially given out for six months after which an assessment is carried out on whether the family still needs financial help. In case the family is still in need, the cheque period is extended for another six months.

“The idea is to make them comfortable and at the same time not make them dependent on the trust. Some 26/11 families have come back and returned our cheque saying that we no longer need it,” Bhatia says with a smile.

Bhatia says many individuals, including corporates and those living abroad, have contributed to their programmes.

Ratan Tata [ Images ], who is one of the trustees, attends the NGO’s meeting once a year. The wives of two of the Taj staffers who lost their lives in the 26/11 attack now work with this trust.

When the victims think they are lost and alone, the Tatas stretch a helping hand.

That is why some of them say, “Others have God we have the Tatas.”
