‘We know about this’ – note stuck on plane’s damaged wing

A passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight bound to Seattle looked out the window and saw what appeared to be a damaged area on the wing with a handwritten note saying, “We know about this.”

The incident July 28 drew comments on Twitter and other social media websites, but the Seattle-based airline says there was nothing to worry about.

Spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said Tuesday that it was an approved trim repair to the corner flap on the right wing. A maintenance technician wrote to let the flight crew know.

Egan says, “The message was the result of someone’s good intentions” but the wing note “was not appropriate and did not follow company procedures.”

The message was immediately removed, and Alaska apologised for any alarm it may have caused.

A STORY OF CINEMA THEATRE AT CHENNAI… BATCHA NOW …MINERVA THEN!!!!!

Batcha Theatre — The story in flashback

Karthik Subramanian discovers the hoary past of Batcha theatre once popular as Minerva

It is tough to close your eyes when you are in Davidson Street in Broadway even if to just imagine how the place would have been a century ago. The dust hits your face as you step out of your vehicle, the noise aggravates your senses and as you walk there is a good chance that you might just step on something.

This oldest part of the city, like a good flea market, hides small treasures in the midst of filth. Batcha theatre is hardly the place anyone would associate history and heritage with. A thoroughly run-down building on the narrow lane filled with godowns and workshops, this theatre is nearing its centenary year. It screens re-runs of old Tamil films for a very average admission rate, one that should just about make back whatever little its owner Batcha spends on buying film reels and maintaining the theatre with a limited staff.

Most of the seats are broken and the doors remain open even when the film plays. The audience is mostly a mix of daily wagers from near abouts. The walls bear a million spit marks.

Ironically, the British patron, W.H. Murch, who established it, took pride nearly a century ago when he described the hall in an advertisement dated July 12, 1916 in The Hindu as “The most up-to-date, coolest and comfortable Theatre in the Presidency”. In his researched article for The Hindu last year, British historian Stephen Putnam Hughes wrote that Murch’s theatre was originally named The National and interpreted it as possibly a political message to the British rulers as being open to all classes of people.

Actor and chronicler Mohan V. Raman, who is currently writing a book on the legendary film studios of Madras, has gathered some information on the Dandekar family that inherited the theatre in the mid-1930s and renamed it Minerva that became famous for screening English feature films. “It was earlier a drama theatre before the Dandeker family took over the place on a long-term lease around 1936,” he notes. “The theatre was the only one of its kind being located on the first floor of a building. There were other theatres nearby such as the Select Talkies, Prabhat and Broadway. Most of them screened Tamil and other regional language films.”

Minerva had an exclusive contract with Paramount Pictures for several years running, making it the number one destination in the city for those who wanted to watch English feature films. Also it was the first to run ‘Adults Only’ features, strictly enforcing the age code. But its glorious reign came to an end in the mid-1970s.

New developments

New theatres started cropping up on Mount Road, there was growing congestion in Broadway and there were some legislations in force — including one to compulsorily screen Tamil movies for 12 weeks in a year. Paramount Pictures also signed up the Casino theatre for releasing their movies from the 1970s. In their interaction with Raman, the Dandekar family who ran the theatre said they tried screening Hindi films for a few years with moderate success.

But the building structure was not able to meet the requirements of licensing authorities and was in need of massive repairs. Past its pinnacle, the theatre was dying a slow death.

The cinema’s present proprietor S.M. Batcha acquired the theatre less than a decade ago, and is unaware of its heritage. He renamed the theatre to bear his name, in order to avoid some legal tangles and debt traps the previous proprietors of Minerva left it with. And he plans to some day try and restore the theatre to its glorious past. But with tickets priced at Rs. 15 and Rs. 12, it seems to be a near-impossible dream to fulfill. The kind of dream that comes true only on celluloid.

Factfile

The theatre is located on the first floor, with a rice warehouse on the ground floor.

For the screening of War and Peace, Paramount asked Minerva theatre to maintain the auditorium at lowest temperatures possible to ensure the audience felt the Russian winter they were seeing on screen.

The theatre has 294 seats.

FIRST NAME..MIDDLE NAME…SURNAME….REAL NAME!!!!!!!!!!!

SOURCE:::::ARTICLE BY S.A.HARIHARAN IN “THE HINDU”…. A TRUE REFLECTION OF PROBLEMS FACED BY ALL OF US UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES….WE USED TO WONDER WHAT IS OUR REAL NAME MANY TIMES WHEN WE GO ABROAD!!!!!

NATARAJAN.

“What’s in a name” written by Kalpana Sharma (The Hindu, March 7, 2010) highlights the problems faced by women when their names change after marriage. Men too experience difficulties when they go abroad. She says in south India the issue of surnames does not arise as people use initials. The expansion of initials given in the passport in place of surnames poses problems outside India.

In the passport, there are only two parts to furnish the name of the passport holder. The “surname” appears first. The actual name comes next under “Given name”.

Different systems are followed in India in giving a name to a person. Confusions and complications arise when we are asked to fill in various official forms in our country – first name, middle name, last name, surname, given name are some examples. I was asked to furnish my “pet name” in one of our private banks.

My son who is abroad went to the department concerned to collect his driving licence. The traffic police officer was issuing the licence one by one. Then he started calling Sekhaari, Sekhaari and Sekhaari and gave up. As no one turned up, my son surmised that the name called might be the shortened version of Sekharipuram, our native village. He was right and got his driving licence! He says he is unable to get anything done in the first attempt due to the misspelling of his expanded initials by the officials concerned and he has to go to the same department two or three times to get it rectified. I can understand his predicament but I am helpless. My brother’s son who is staying in U.K. is Ramesh Subramanian as given in the passport. I asked him how the natives call him. He simply said with a smile they just call him “Ramesh Submarine man”. My cousin in Germany was called Mr. Kalpathy. Kalpathy is a name of a town!

In south India, normally the first letter of the initials indicates the native place of the person and the second letter the name of the person’s father and the person’s real name is pushed to the end. The culprit behind this system is the person’s school leaving certificate. In some other forms, for want of space the name of the person or a part of it is mercilessly cut.

The expansion of the initials of a person leads to hilarious situations on some occasions. When I was in the U.S., a friend of mine was booked for some small violation of traffic rules and was asked to report to the traffic offence court to pay the required fine. As per the passport, his name was too long and it was Thirunindravur Srinivasachari Thothadhri. When the judge fumbled to pronounce his name, the entire court started laughing. His name was a blessing in disguise. The judge pronounced his verdict saying that he need not pay the fine as he could not read his name properly. However, he asked him to see a short documentary film on traffic rules and then go home!

I would request the passport authorities to slightly alter the all-important first page of the passport. The name of the passport holder should appear first and the surname should appear next. This is the minimum change required. As written by Ms Sharma, I also ask why so much importance is given to the surname? I know it will be difficult even to make a small change in the passport which is an international document and we have to inform all the countries in the world about the change.

The given name first and the surname next will also help people living in other parts of India. “Maiden name” for women and the “given name” for men would be simpler in the long run. However at the age of 76, I feel I have to join the LKG class again to answer the question “What is your name”?

LESSONS TEAM ANNA CAN LEARN FROM NIRMA AND SONY!!!!!

SOURCE:::::SILICON INDIA NEWS …..OPINION….

Natarajan

Team Anna members met for the first time after they ended their indefinite fast and discussed their plans to take a plunge in electoral politics. Many ardent fans of Anna Hazare are bound to feel disappointed that he would form a political party and contest election to bring the Lokpal Bill.

Anna had received widespread support because of the importance of his anti corruption movement. The support that he got from the people across country was due to the fact that many people were convinced that he would bring huge pressure on the politicians to reform themselves and bring down the level of corruption. Anna’s plan on forming a political party was in fact not welcomed by some of the dignitaries in India. Former Supreme Court Justice Santosh Hegde said, “Personally I am not in favor of Annaji floating a political party and contesting elections, which is an expensive affair and requires huge resources in terms of funds and cadres.” as reported in The Hindu.

Now the question looms whether Anna should form a political party or not and by forming such parties will Anna be successful? An excellent example of such unsuccessful innovation is Nirma Detergent, as reported in The Hindu. Karsanbhai Patel who introduced Nirma detergent in 1969, started selling soaps at 3.50 per kg. At that time, Surf (Hindustan Uniliver) retailed for Rs 15 per kg. The consumers at that time couldn’t afford the luxury of washing their clothes using a detergent and instead used soap. If Patel had thought that Hindustan Unilever would rout his small detergent, he would never have launched. The same policy should be applicable to Team Anna’s political party as well. Anna should never launch such a party and run it for the next few years without knowing what is in store for him.

In 1955, Sony had introduced the first battery- powered, pocket transistor radio and their main target were teenagers who could not afford big tabletop radios. Sony also came up with other disruptive innovations like the Walkman and the CDMan which was not successful in the market. So what Anna has to learn from the Sony experience is that one has to think a 100 times before taking a plunge into electoral politics. If Anna joins politics, the momentum gained should not be lost. When people like Anna Hazare, having noble intentions join politics, either they don’t last long or they don’t achieve much.

What Anna and his aides should learn from such examples is that their political party may not take the nation by storm all at once. What he should do is appeal only to a section of voters, mainly the urban middle-class, like Sony Radios had appealed to teenagers. If Anna and his aides remain true to their cause, they might just gain popularity among the masses over the years.

Team Anna is also like the disruptive innovations where Team Anna’s political partiestries for a few years but doesn’t get anywhere. Giving these reasons Team Anna’s political party should be given a chance as they are fighting for a cause. However they should be wise enough not to follow in the shoes of Nirma and Sony which caused them little success.

Love, kindness and encouragement go a long way towards helping elders cope with advancing years

An old man repeatedly asked his son the same question. The son, with irritation in his voice, told his father to keep quiet. Shortly thereafter, the father hobbled on unsteady feet into the next room and brought out an old, tattered diary. He turned the page to a date which was written when the son was four. On that page were written the lines: “Today, my son asked the same question 24 times, and each time I gave him the same answer. I realise it was the child’s curiosity and marvel at his inquisitiveness.” He showed the page to his son who only then realised that his father, now an old man, had become a child again.

My mother is old and often repeats herself. Sometimes I am empathetic but, more often than not, I show irritation. Sadly what she wants is to be understood, to be listened to, and to be shown kindness. These are the least I can offer her in her old age.

Old age causes one’s mortality to stare us in the face. We suddenly become unsure of ourselves, unpredictable and frightened. Death seems to beckon and we are scared to die.

Elizabeth Kubler Ross has said it so well in her treatise on death and dying which, though applicable more to cancer, is relevant to old people. Old people are first angry that they are incapacitated; then they feel betrayed by disappointments they have faced in life; then they plead with life for more time and finally, accept the reality of their impending death. Yet most people pass away in the pleading stage and never really attain the accepting stage.

The only way people who are younger and more robust can offer an easy passage for the old is to show love, compassion, kindness and accept the fact that ageing brings with it unimaginable fears. When we show love and kindness we tell our elders that we are thankful, that they mean a lot to us and that their life has been well-spent.

E bay
E bay.

NUTS AND BOLTS…..WHAT IS IN STORE FOR AN INDIAN ENGG. STUDENT???

Ashish got thrown out of the interview when he was shown a Vernier calliper and he called it a screw gauge. A mid-sized company had come to his engineering college in Bhopal to recruit fresh graduates. But the interview began on a bad note. Realisation soon dawned on Ashish that his four years in the college and the lakhs his family had spent on his education had been a total waste. Not the one to be deterred, he used those years to good advantage when film maker Prakash Jha came to the city to shoot for Aarakshan: Ashish brought in the extras — students from his college.

In one of the several engineering colleges that have come up in the outskirts of Chennai, Sentahmizh studies mechanical engineering. He hails from Ariyalur, a small town in southern Tamil Nadu, and admits that he doesn’t understand a word of what his teachers say, learns by Note and studies just enough to pass. He can’t speak English. The college, when he was seeking admission, had spun fantastic tales about multinational corporations falling over each other to recruit its students. Sentahmizh suspects that might never happen. He may soon join the ranks of unemployed engineers.

Carlos Ghosn may have marvelled at India’s frugal engineering skills, the fact is that a vast majority of the country’s engineering graduates are unemployable. Many engineering colleges are just churning out deadwood. Aspiring Minds, a company that works in the field of human resources, last year surveyed 55,000 students who had graduated in 2011; it found that just 17.45 per cent were directly employable in the information technology sector, the biggest recruiter of engineers these days, without any training. When it came to direct deployment on projects, the number fell sharply to 3.51 per cent. And in IT product companies, which require higher skill sets, it slid further to 2.68 per cent. A few days ago, PurpleLeap, a Pearson and Educomp company, released the findings of its survey of 34,000 students from 198 engineering colleges across the country: only one out of ten graduates from Tier 2, 3 and 4 colleges is readily employable, and one-third are unemployable even after training. The survey, mind you, was restricted to students who had done well academically.

THE FACTS OF THE MATTER
Only 10% of graduates are employable
Only 33% are unemployable even after training
Only 17.45% are employable in IT services
Only 3.51% are directly deployable on IT projects
Only 2.68% are employable in IT product companies
More than 25% don’t know English well enough to understand the curriculum
Less than 48% understand moderately sophisticated words of English
Around 50% have the grammar skills of a Class VII student
The tab for the poor output has to be picked up by the employers. IT companies, according to analysis done by Nasscom and Evalueserve, spend $1.2 billion every year on training. Had the engineering schools done their job properly, this money would go straight to their bottom-line. If you have invested in IT stocks, this should worry you. Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest provider of IT services, spends 2 per cent of its turnover ($10 billion in 2011-12) on training. It is now investing Rs 1,000 crore in a training facility for 15,000 people in Thiruvananthapuram. Infosys’s Mysore campus has trained 100,000 fresh graduates so far, at a cost of $6,000-7,000 per employee. That’s a whopping $600-700 million knocked out of the company’s profits over ten years. Incidentally, the campus started with a module of 14 weeks which got extended to 17 weeks and now stands at 23 weeks. “There is definitely a gap between what they study in college and the skills they need at work,” says Infosys Senior Vice-president & Group Head (education & research) Srikantan Moorthy.

There are 1.5 million engineering seats in India today, up from 500,000 five years ago. This is way beyond the demand for engineers. Himanshu Aggarwal, the CEO and co-founder of Aspiring Minds, says that the IT sector absorbs around 200,000 engineers in a year, and the demand from the other sectors can’t add up to more than that. If one-fifth seats go unfilled in engineering colleges, that leaves 800,000 jobless engineers in a year. But all of them may not join the ranks of the unemployed as many get enrolled in business schools. That’s another Pandora’s Box: there are over 3,000 of them in the country, many not more than holes in the wall. Some others take non-engineering jobs.

Shantanu Prakash, the managing director of Educomp Solutions, says that there was a shortage of engineers in the country a few years back and that precipitated a mad scramble amongst businessmen, big and small, to set up engineering colleges. “And now, all of a sudden, there is a glut,” he says. From almost zero a few years ago, private colleges own almost 92 per cent of the engineering seats in the country — such has been the rush. There are 35 colleges in Bhopal alone. In Madhya Pradesh, there are 200 engineering colleges with over 100,000 seats on offer. The state that has seen maximum growth is Andhra Pradesh — it has 671 private colleges that offer 320,000 seats.

Engineering education is regulated by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It has a fairly stringent check list that all engineering colleges need to fulfill: not less than 2.5 acres of land, not more than 300 students per acre, corpus of at least Rs 1 crore for operational expenses, student-teacher ratio of not more than 15, student-personal-computer ratio of at least 4, etc. But that’s hardly proved a deterrent. Setting up an engineering college can cost upwards of Rs 15 crore, depending on real estate prices, and payback happens in seven years. On the other hand, the demand will never see a slowdown. Indian parents, it is universally acknowledged, never flinch before spending large sums of money on their children’s education. Higher education in India is immensely valued. That explains the glut.

And it’s severe. Of the 320,000 seats in Andhra Pradesh, says an education consultant based in Hyderabad, more than 120,000 will go vacant this year. In Maharashtra, 30,000 of the 110,000 seats on offer went vacant last year; this year, the number is expected to climb to 40,000. Some colleges have appointed touts to get students. Business Standard contacted two such agents, one in Ghaziabad and one in Mumbai, to secure admission in some reputed engineering colleges in Delhi and Pune. The admission was guaranteed, albeit at the cost of a few lakh rupees. Some engineering schools are ready to shut down and cut their losses, and quite a few are up for sale. Though AICTE reduced the minimum marks required in Class XII, to be eligible for admission in an engineering college, from 50 per cent to 45 per cent in 2010-11, it hasn’t helped — there are no takers for a large number of seats. Moved obviously by the plight of these colleges, the Maharashtra government wrote to AICTE earlier this year not to approve any new college in the state. Still, AICTE has given its nod to 11 new engineering colleges!

AICTE is actually in no mood to relent. Shankar S Mantha, its chairman, is convinced the country needs more engineering colleges. “Given the low gross enrolment ratio of India (18-20 per cent), there is a need to make available more higher education opportunities for this huge chunk of students who remain outside the system,” says he. It is only two years later that the council will revisit the issue — that’s how long it takes to build an engineering college — when the colleges approved now will be up and running. Besides, says he, some redundancy needs to be built into the capacity as some streams lose favour and others gains currency. Mantha is convinced that engineering colleges will run out of seats once Indian students who go abroad to study prefer to do so in India. “Even in the US, the top six or seven management institutes are all full; but in some of the better institutes, around 50 per cent of the seats are vacant. I expect in another year or so the entire sector will undergo a sea change and you will find more institutes will be needed,” he says.

* * *

In the bargain, the quality has hit rock bottom. The Aspiring Minds employability study had found that states with fewer engineering colleges produced more employable engineers. There is therefore an inverse correlation between quantity and quality. Prakash of Educomp says that it is a highly regulated sector where colleges often cut corners to stay afloat. AICTE fixes the admission norms, the fees that colleges can charge and the salaries they can pay their teachers. “It’s a business where the input costs as well as the output costs are controlled,” says Prakash who runs an engineering college in Greater Noida. As a result, the infrastructure of many new colleges is poor and the faculty inexperienced. Worse, everybody involved seems to acknowledge it. “Do they (the new engineering colleges) have trained and skilled faculty to teach modern courses,” Madhya Pradesh’s director of technical education, Arun Nahar, asks. Several schools have hired those former students as teachers who failed to get jobs outside. Badam Singh Yadav, who runs the IES Colllege of Technology in Bhopal, says most of his time is spent grappling with government rules and solving the “petty” issues of his students. “Does anybody care,” he says with fair bit of irritation, “that most of our students come from a rural background?” Engineering students in Chennai say the teachers often lack the motivation to help them out.

Apart from technical knowledge, most graduates are woefully short on soft skills. Wipro, says Senior Vice-president & Global Head (workforce planning & development) Deepak Jain, runs a 12-week course for fresh graduates to upgrade their technical as well as soft skills. Ajoy Mukherjee, the global head of human resources at TCS, finds that engineering graduates lack soft skills such as the ability to work in a team and communicate effectively more than technical knowledge. The company’s three-month training programme, which every recruit has to undergo, looks to address these gaps, and focuses on converting students to professionals, says Mukherjee. “The inability to communicate is a serious concern, especially not being able to talk in English, form grammatically correct sentences, etc. When 94 per cent of your revenue comes from overseas, it is essential that you know how to communicate in English,” he says.

A recent report by Aspiring Minds, based on a study of 55,000 students from 250 engineering colleges, said 25-35 per cent students are unable to comprehend English. That shouldn’t have been a problem, except that most books and instruction manuals are in English. Only 57 per cent can write grammatically correct sentences in English, less than 48 per cent understand “moderately sophisticated” words, and almost 50 per cent possess grammar skills no better than a Class VII student. Not more than 30 per cent of the students, who go through stress and exhaustion while preparing for engineering college, are acquainted with the word “exhaust”. “Absurd” is a word not understood by 50 per cent.

It’s a mess out there.

WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN FLY ?

SOURCE::: THE BOOK “WHY WAlk when you can fly” …a simple logic we should learn in our life ….

Natarajan

Once there was a king who received a gift of two magnificent falcons from Arabia. They were peregrine falcons, the most beautiful birds he
had ever seen. He gave the precious birds to his head falconer to be trained.
Months passed and one day the head falconer informed the king that though one of the falcons was flying majestically, soaring high in the
sky, the other bird had not moved from its branch since the day it had arrived.
The king summoned healers and sorcerers from all the land to tend to the falcon, but no one could make the bird fly. He presented the task
to the member of his court, but the next day, the king saw through the palace window that the bird had still not moved from its perch. Having
tried everything else, the king thought to himself, “May be I need someone more familiar with the countryside to understand the nature of
this problem.” So he cried out to his court, “Go and get a farmer.”
In the morning, the king was thrilled to see the falcon soaring high above the palace gardens. He said to his court, “Bring me the doer of this miracle.”
The court quickly located the farmer, who came and stood before the king. The king asked him, “How did you make the falcon fly?”
With his head bowed, the farmer said to the king, ” It was very easy, your highness. I simply cut the branch where the bird was sitting.”
We are all made to fly — to realize our incredible potential as human beings. But instead of doing that, we sit on our branches, clinging to
the things that are familiar to us. The possibilities are endless, but for most of us, they remain undiscovered. We conform to the familiar,
the comfortable, the mundane. So for the most part, our lives are mediocre instead of exciting, thrilling and fulfilling.
So let us learn to destroy the branch of fear we cling to and free ourselves to soar higher.
