Moon Baffles a Policeman!!!!!!!!

A British policeman put his colleagues on alert as he investigated a ‘suspicious bright light’ – only to find it was the moon, an in-house magazine for the police reported on Wednesday.

Police magazine reported that the hapless officer only realised his blunder after warning his fellow constables in Worcestershire, central England, that he might require back-up.

The magazine’s Dogberry column revealed: ‘While single-crewed on night duty in Worcestershire a PC called up his sergeant letting him know that he was going up into the Clent Hills to investigate a ‘suspicious bright light’ that he could see shining from the other side of the hills.

‘The call was for safety reasons as he might need back-up once he found the source.

‘Twenty minutes later the PC called his sergeant back to reassure him that everything was ok and that he had found the source of the light.

‘This diligent PC had in fact discovered the moon.’

While the gaffe was once known only to the unnamed policeman’s colleagues in the Worcestershire force, it has now been revealed to all 132,000 police rank-and-file officers in England and Wales who receive the magazine.

81 Year Old Aircraft Ready to Fly Again !!!

SOURCE: ARITA SARKAR in” THE HINDU “……

Natarajan

A dream in progress, to see one of the oldest aircrafts in the city take flight again, is nearing completion.

The engine of an 81-year-old de Havilland Puss Moth, will be ready next week, in the first and pivotal step towards the restoration of the aircraft.

Eight months ago, the remains of the dilapidated aeroplane was spotted by Steve Borgia, a collector of contemporary museum artefacts. Mr. Borgia, after a great deal of persuasion, bought it from the owner, Ramanathan Avudiappa Chettiar.

“I had no intention of selling it. But for the sake of national interest I sold it, as it would be remarkable to see it fly again,” said Mr. Chettiar. The craft was earlier owner by Mr. Chettiar’s father, V.R.M.A. Avudiappa Chettiar, but had a long and interesting journey before making its way to the possession of his son.

The aircraft has made a long journey before it made its way into the possession of his son, Ramanathan Avudiappa Chettiar.

Eight months ago, the remains of the aircraft, now in a dilapidated structure, was spotted by Steve Borgia, a collector of contemporary museum artefacts.According to Anuradha Reddy, an aviation historian, historical records suggest that the aircraft was first registered in 1931, and had been in the possession of several individuals before it lost its flying license in 1942.

The aircraft has now been placed at a conservation laboratory in a hotel in Swamimalai, Thanjavur district, where restoration work on it has been going on for the past six months. “I have spoken to various consultants to discuss the restoration plans. Mechanical engineers have been working on the engine for the past six months now, and the engine is finally almost complete,” said Mr. Borgia

It is a whole new experience for Shivam Sabesan, the deputy manager of technical planning at Nissan, who has only ever worked with car engines so far in his career.

“It is an invigorating experience to be able to handle a machine that is so old. It tells you how engines were in earlier times,” he said. Work will move on next to the fuselage or the airframe.

Once this is completed, the wings will be worked upon, followed by the wiring and the landing gear.

“The plane is built around the engine. That’s the toughest part. The rest is easier,” Mr. Sabesan said.

Mr. Borgia’s excitement is palpable. Mr. Borgia, in his enthusiasm to see the restoration project through said, “I want to fly the aircraft. Even if it doesn’t take off, I will drive it on the road and take it to Chettinad and park it on the tarmac that was prepared for it,” he said.

Kashmir to UK…By Road…..

New 4000-mile bus route will connect Birmingham to Kashmir

Mirpur in Jammu and Kashmir will now be directly linked by road with the United Kingdom through a direct bus service, says a report.
A new 4,000-mile bus route connecting the city Birmingham, will pass through seven countries, including Iran, before finally reaching its destination, also known as ‘Little Birmingham’.
Passengers embarking on the epic 12-day journey are likely to be charged 130 pounds for a ticket, the Daily Mirror reports.
The service is definitely a good news for the people of Birmingham, which is home to the world’s largest population of Kashmiri expats.
According to the report, security concerns have, however, been raised about the route, which will stop over at Quetta, Pakistan.
Top Taliban commanders are said to be hiding in the volatile city, near the Afghan border. ..

Fake Pilot in Cockpit!!!!!!!!!!!!

source::::::”Bigpond News”…..strange but a true story…

Natarajan

An unemployed man wore a pilot’s uniform to hitch a free ride in the cockpit of a commercial flight, Italian police claim.

The 32-year-old was stopped at Turin’s Caselle airport on suspicion of using false IDs, a cap and uniform to convince crew he was a qualified pilot.

He managed to fly for free inside the cockpit aboard a flight from Munich, Germany, to Turin in April, according to Carabinieri paramilitary police.

The two real pilots flew the Air Dolomiti plane while the man, who has not been identified, did not touch the controls.

The case is reminiscent of that of Frank Abagnale, who pretended to be a pilot, and whose story was made into a Hollywood film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.

Italian police said they tailed the man, who called himself Andrea Sirlo on his Facebook page, for months after receiving a tip-off.

Two pilots flew the plane with the ‘fake’ pilot in the cockpit, police said

Detectives claimed the man stated on his profile that he was a commercial pilot who was promoted to captain’s rank while still young, and police became suspicious.

Officers are investigating whether there were any other flights on which he may have pretended to be a pilot.

Turin police spokesman Filippo Vanni said: ‘He’s so good that with his fake uniform, fake degrees and fake badge, he tricked a lot of people into believing he really was a pilot and also some crew members bought it.

‘That’s how he got a ‘lift’ on the Turin-Munich flight in the cockpit, actually in the seat reserved for special guests, behind the co-pilot.

‘He tried to create a new life for himself, where he could be accepted, gain friends and access a whole new social setting.’

A police statement said the suspect was held on suspicion of putting the security of air transport at risk and ‘usurping a title’.

He has been bailed while the investigation continues.

‘On at least one occasion in 2012, pretending to be a pilot of a foreign commercial airline, and with a fake name, he succeeded in flying as the third pilot in the cockpit,’ the statement said.

‘We know the case,’ Lufthansa spokesman Christoph Meier said. He declined to give any details, but said that even crew are unable to fly aboard one of the carrier’s planes without having a ticket, indicating that the Italian might have had a passenger ticket.

Italian police said the suspect, after they confronted him, led them to a garage, where officers found piles of neatly pressed white shirts with epaulets, black trousers and jackets which were similar to pilots’ uniforms.

Battle of Jumbo Jets…..who is the winner?!!!!

BATTLE OF THE JUMBO JETS: Airbus A380 Vs. Boeing 747_81

airbus a380 vs. boeing 747-8i

Boeing / Airbus

In recent years, Airbus has put itself at the top of the aircraft-building world with the A380, the whale of a plane that is the largest passenger jet in the world.

Last year, Boeing has introduced the 747-8 International, the revamped version of the class 747 it calls the “Queen of the Skies.”

But which is better? To come up the answer, we broke down the numbers in 11 categories, picking the winner based on size, power, capacity, luxury, availability, and more.

The Boeing 747-8I is new and the A380 has been in service for several years, which accounts for some of the differences. But for travelers trying to decide how they want to fly now, here are the facts as they stand today.

CAPACITY: Boeing’s 747-8I has a maximum capacity of 467 passengers.

CAPACITY: The A380 usually holds around 500 passengers, but has room for as many as 853.

YOU are What You Are……

source:::::unknown…input recd from one of my friends…. a ” must read” by all persons of all the ages…..a good story…may or mot be real one…. but it conveys the right message ….

Natarajan

An old man, staying in a small south Indian town came to visit his son in Mumbai recently. The son in his early thirties is a successful businessman living with his wife and son. The father, having spent most of his life at his birthplace, hardly understands a splatter of Hindi or English, forget Marathi. But he doesn’t care. ‘I have come here to spend a few days with my son and his family. I don’t have to go out and socialize with the city people,’ he said.

But the son is very excited about his father’s rare visit to Bombay. He wants to make the best of it. He and his wife want to show him around the city. And yes, the son enjoys those evening hours too, when he and his father go out and sit in a good bar, sipping their favorite drink.

Last week he was in a very good mood. ‘Let’s go to a five star hotel’s bar tonight,’ he told his father. It was a beautiful evening. Talking about everything under the sun they had a few drinks. As usual they were offered some salad, peanuts, wafers etc .as accompaniments with their drinks. The old man being almost toothless was not much interested in eating. But that day when they got up to leave, he simply took a handful of chana (roasted grams) and stuffed it in the fold of his dhoti. He might have thought about munching on them, sitting in the car, or whatever.
Unfortunately while walking in the lobby, he missed a step and stumbled. Down he went, scattering the chana on the plush carpet.

No problem .Now try to visualize that scenario. Someone else in his son’s place would have been mortified, embarrassed to death. He might have cursed not his father but his own self for causing this awkward situation.
‘Never again will I take my old man to such hotels’, he would have vowed.
No sir, not this son. Gently, with a smile, he helped his father get back on his feet. Instead of feeling irritated or angry, he was amused. He found the whole incident very funny. Laughing, they both went home and on the way they decided to return to the same place the following Sunday.
The old man liked the place and liked the chana too.

Few days back, at a friend’s place they both described this event and made everybody laugh.
Weren’t you embarrassed? Somebody asked the son. ‘Oh, come on now’ replied the son. ‘He is my father. He talks in his native language, prefers to wear a dhoti even to a posh city hotel, takes chana from the bar to eat later, does whatever he feels like…. So what?
Why should I feel embarrassed with his nature and habits? Nobody has a right to stop him from doing whatever he feels comfortable with, as long as it is not harmful to others.’

The son doesn’t care what the staff in the hotel thought about that incident. He says ‘they should be concerned only with their bills and tips. I am concerned about my father’s happiness.’ The wife too totally agrees with the husband on this issue. She feels there are enough other qualities in her father- in- law to feel proud of.
Accept them .The above incident is not mentioned just to show the love and devotion of a son for his father. More than love it is a matter of understanding and a healthy respect for the other person’s lifestyle.

A seventy plus old man doesn’t want to change his lifestyle now. He likes the way he eats or dresses or talks. In his eyes there is nothing wrong with the old ways of living. And the son says, ok, fine. Every body has a right to live as per his wish. Now at his age, why should he be forced to learn to eat with a fork and knife, if he doesn’t want to? I will feel bad if he is doing something morally wrong or indulging in some harmful activities. But otherwise it is fine. I am not going to try to change him at this stage. He is my father. I love him, respect him.

Hey folks, can you think this way? So many times we see people getting embarrassed by the so called unsophisticated behavior of their family members. They keep on apologizing about their lack of class and manners or about their drawbacks to outsiders. My wife can’t speak proper English; she doesn’t know what’s happening in the world, so I avoid taking her out or introducing her to my friends and business associates… My parents can’t eat with a spoon and fork, so I don’t take them to restaurants My husband is working as an ordinary clerk, so I feel awkward when I introduce him to my rich friends. My brother is mentally challenged, so I don’t feel like going out with him…

Are you plagued with such thoughts or do you meet such people who think alike? If you do, please ask yourself. Why do others or I feel this way? Really what is there to feel ashamed of? Most of the people always have this fear of other peoples’ opinions and comments. What would others say?

Nothing.. You are what you are..

Too big huh?? But it’s a brain drain… Think over it..

:A. Gopal, K. Naveen and R. Muthu Kumar have inaugurated a first of its kind of Jeep Clinic in Coimbatore that specialises in providing remodelled jeeps.

Three friends buy old jeeps and restore them into hi-tech, road worthy vehicles. K. Jeshi visits them at their Jeep Clinic where they carry out the transformation

It was nothing more than junk when they bought the Willys GPA, a jeep manufactured in 1941 during the Second World War. Three engineers from Coimbatore bid for it at a Defence Yard auction and towed it all the way to Coimbatore. Here, they lovingly restored it, and today it stands pretty at their recently inaugurated Jeep Clinic. A. Gopal, K. Naveen and R. Muthu Kumar have converted their love for jeeps into a business opportunity. They refer to their clinic as a high-tech private hospital for jeeps! It is here that old jeeps are given new life. “Other than the chassis and the engine, we replace almost everything else – the nuts, screws and bolts – and rebuild the body. The vehicle is ripped open, and re-modelled from scratch,” says Gopal.

The three friends want to make jeeps affordable. One has to spend a minimum of Rs. 2.75 lakhs to buy a re-modelled performance oriented jeep, they say.

They show off a Low bonnet Willys GPW, another World War classic. They have retained its original map reading lamp, Lucas headlights, the logo, emblem, and the military colour. The Willys Station Wagon, a limited edition jeep, also occupies pride of place. It is the first commercial civilian utility wagon, manufactured by Willys in 1954 after World War II.

“There are just two or three of these vehicles around. One of them is stationed at the Chief Minister’s Kodanad Estate. For ours, we had to wait for five years to get it directly from the owner in Andhra Pradesh. It’s an asset,” Gopal says with pride as he points to the Wagon that has an amazingly generous leg space.

They have retained the number plate of the previous owner, as well as the original blue paint on the outside, the windshield with original beading, door handles and the steering wheel. Many have shown interest in buying it but they are not ready to sell.

Affordable

Gopal is a storehouse of information. He has collected the technical details of Jeeps right from 1939 onwards to the latest Wrangler Sport, introduced in 2011. Every jeep has a history, he says. “A jeep is like Spiderman…it can jump, hop and run, uninterruptedly, there’s no stopping. We want to build interest in these vehicles. We want to do that by making jeeps affordable. The sturdy body that weighs around 1400kgs (1.2 tonnes) ensures safety too.”

Automobile evolution began with jeeps, says Naveen. “Cars came much later. Our future generations should know the history. In the West, jeeps are popular even today as it is suits any terrain,” he says. Their single-seater high bonnet open jeep (Willys CJ 3B), a 1953 model, comes with a foldable windshield.

The Mahindra Major, a commercial passenger jeep is another prized possession. So is a Mahindra MM 540. “The original owner is the former Commissioner of Police, Triunelveli. We got it at an auction and converted it to look like a military vehicle. It comes with a set of 12-lights in the front that is good enough to light up the jungle.”

A work in progress at their clinic is the black Mahindra Thar CRDe. If you leave the door open, a pre-recorded voice asks you to shut it. It will soon have an automated rain-detection sensor that activates the wiper the minute water falls on the wind shield. “The owner, an Australian, wants to convert his Rs. 8 lakh Thar into a hi-tech vehicle, on the lines of Wrangler Sport (it costs Rs. 1.5 crore). We are doing the automation for just Rs. 7 lakh; his total spend is just Rs. 15 lakh,” explains Muthu.

Safe technology

He has developed a unique high-tech mobile Security Access Control System for the Thar which allows its owner to control the vehicle anywhere in the world through a wide area network. “The mobile phone becomes the remote,” he says. If someone tries to steal the car, an in-built spy camera captures the footage and the owner can see it on his mobile. From the mobile phone, he can cut the fuel supply and activate the jeep horn. As the kit is connected with the nerve centre of the car, any attempt to deactivate it results in the car going dead. This device can be installed in cars, two-wheelers, and buses too.”

To add muscle to the Thar, they have also added the high lift jack to raise the vehicle by nearly 40 inches if the wheels get stuck. There is GPS tracking, voice recognition systems, rugged tyres, and wooden interiors. “Every hi-tech automation aims at ensuring safety to the vehicle, driver and co-passengers.”

They have delivered over 100 jeeps to customers across the country over the last seven years. “Jeep Clinic is a registered company. We are not a roadside garage,” Gopal clarifies. A chunk of his customers are from Karnataka, Andhra and Kerala as well as the North, especially from Punjab, and Bengal.

The three friends have travelled as far as the Pakistan border to buy jeeps on auction and to source components. “Every day is a learning process. Our mission is to retain the old culture, the history and infuse it with new technology for a never-before driving experience. It is the ultimate thrill.”

World”s First Flying Car !!!!!!..”Transition”….

US company Terrafugia has put on display a prototype car that is licensed to fly as well as drive, at the New York International Auto Show.

It is the first fully integrated flying car in the world to have met both the standards of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), according to Cliff Allen, vice-president of sales at Terrafugia.

This makes it the first “street legal aeroplane”, he said.

Known as the Transition, the versatile vehicle has two seats, four wheels and retractable wings.

It is expected to be available next year, with a price tag in the region of $279,000 (£176,300).

Test flight

The vehicle currently has an experimental certificate from the FAA, meaning the company has permission to fly it in US airspace for test purposes. The company hopes in time it will gain a light sport aircraft licence.

The hybrid vehicle completed its first successful test flight at Plattsburgh International Airport near Montreal in Canada last month.

A retired US Air Force test pilot took the maiden voyage – after volunteering his services.

Transition completed a successful test flight on 23 March this year at Plattsburgh International Airport

“We are very fortunate to have found him,” said Dr Samuel Schwegart, an engineer at Terrafugia working on the project.

The vehicle flew at 1,400ft for eight minutes.

However, important details still need to be worked out from test data, including the stall speed of the aircraft.

There are significant design challenges marrying a roadworthy vehicle with a skyworthy one, according to Dr Schwegart.

“We were curious to see how it would take off,” says Dr Schwegart. “Unlike a normal plane, it cannot rock back on its rear wheels at the moment of take-off, because it is designed to be stable as a car on the road.”

The engineers also found that Transition needed more speed than anticipated on take-off, to generate the necessary lift for ascent.

A hard landing was also reported, but nothing of concern, according to Dr Schwegart.

Maintenance levels

“You can pull up at a regular gas station to fill it up,” says Dr Schwegart. A full tank holds 23 US gallons (87 litres) of fuel.

The vehicle has retractable wings allowing it to fit in a suburban garage
It requires Premium 91-octane fuel, and does 35 miles to the gallon on the road, and 28 miles in the air.

“The discrepancy is because of drag,” according to Dr Schwegart.

Although Transition can be stored in a normal garage, it needs a 1,700ft (520m) runway to take off.

According to the company, this is no problem, as there are 5,000 state airports in the United States. And there are a further 5,000 private ones, which might just mean a simple runway belonging to a farmer in a field.

Terrafugia calculates that you are rarely further than half an hour from a take-off point – and there are apps like Foreflight which will tell you where the nearest one is, whether you are on the ground, or up in the air hoping to come down.

“You just do your pre-flight checks, unfold your wings and away you go,” says Dr Schwegart.

Target market

The automated folding wings are an important feature of the vehicle, as wing design has confounded previous attempts to bring flying cars to a mass market.

Moulton Taylor’s Aerocar in the late 1940s gained a flying certificate in the US, but its detachable wings put many potential customers off.

They had to be fixed to the vehicle by hand, and transported on a trailer that was so long, it required a special road licence.

Terrafugia’s Transition has 100 pre-orders, which in it’s current small production facility in Woburn, Massachusetts, already means a 2-3 year backlog.

The initial target market for Transition was pilots, according to Dr Schwegart, but the company is now reaching out to people with no aviation background.

Terrafugia says the New York Auto Show has expanded their order book
The vehicle offers an “advanced level of freedom in life, more efficiency in personal travel”, according to a company representative.

With a range of 644 miles (1,035km) on a full tank, the vehicle could in theory make a non-domestic journey. For the time being, however, the vehicle is restricted by its licence to flying in the United States.
