Heartwarming……..

Story number 1

Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn’t
famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy
city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.

Capone had a lawyer nicknamed “Easy Eddie.” He was Capone’s lawyer
for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie’s skill at legal
maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the
money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his
family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the
conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire
Chicago City block.

Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration
to the atrocity that went on around him.

Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly.
Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education.
Nothing was withheld. Price was no object.

Despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to
teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was.

Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn’t
give his son; he couldn’t pass on a good name or a good example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to
rectify wrongs he had done.

He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al
“Scarface” Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some
semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob,
and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified.

Within the year, Easy Eddie’s life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely
Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had
to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay Police removed from his
pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from
a magazine.

The poem read:

“The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power
to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour.
Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will.
Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still.”

Story number 2

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant
Commander Butch O’Hare.

He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the
South Pacific.

One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was
airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had
forgotten to top off his fuel tank.

He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back
to his ship.

His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he
dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.

As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned
his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward
the American fleet.

The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but
defenseless. He couldn’t reach his squadron and bring them back in time
to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger.
There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation
of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber’s blazed as he charged in,
attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and
out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until
all his ammunition was finally spent.

Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip
a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible,
rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction.

Deeply relieved, Butch O’Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier

Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return.
The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed
the extent of Butch’s daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact,
destroyed five enemy aircraft.

This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the
Navy’s first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Congressional
Medal of Honor.

A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home
town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today,
O’Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man.

So, the next time you find yourself at O’Hare International, give some
thought to visiting Butch’s memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of
Honor. It’s located between Terminals 1 and 2.

So what do these two stories have to do with each other ?

A will to serve combined with a sense of social justice has been the guiding principle of P. Kalyanasundaram, who has spent over 45 years in social service. A gold medallist in library science, he is also an MA in literature and history. During his 35-year-career as a librarian at the Kumarkurupara Arts College at Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin district, he gave away all his salary for charity and did odd jobs to meet his daily needs. He has also come forward to donate his body and eyes to the Tirunelveli Medical College.

The Union Government has acclaimed him as `The Best Librarian in India’. He has also been chosen as `one of the top ten librarians of the world’. The International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, has honoured him as `one of the noblest of the world’, while the United Nations Organisation adjudged him as one of the Outstanding People of the 20th Century’. An American organisation has also selected him as the `Man of the Millennium.’

Mr. Kalyanasundaram, who has founded a social welfare organisation, `Paalam’, shares his experiences in a chat with Prathiba Parameswaran.

SIMPLICITY IN life and exemplariness in practice has been the hallmark of Mr. Kalyanasundaram. Born in August 1953 at Melakarivelamkulam in Tirunelveli district, he lost his father at a very young age. It was his mother, who inspired him to serve the poor.

When he was at college, the Indo-China war broke out, and he contributed his gold chain to the then Chief Minister, Kamaraj, for the war fund. At this time around, he went to meet Balasubramanian, Editor, Ananda Vikatan. “He sent me away, saying he would write about me the day I donated something I had earned myself. I did not speak a word to anyone about what I had done. I took it as a challenge,” Mr. Kalyanasundaram recalls. Ever since he got a job as a librarian in Tuticorin, he has contributed all his salary, pension benefits and ancestral property to social welfare. It was not until 1990, when he received his pension arrears and contributed it to the Collector’s Fund, that the then Tiruneveli Collector felicitated him, despite his protests. The `Paalam’ serves as a bridge between donors and beneficiaries: it collects money and materials from those willing to donate and distribute them among the weaker sections. It has also contributed to the cyclone relief funds in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, and has helped the earthquake victims in Maharashtra and Gujarat. “We cannot sustain ourselves, unless we contribute towards the society in someway or the other. Mr. Kalyanasundaram feels that one must achieve something in his chosen field. His contribution to library science is immense. A thesis he submitted as part of his post-graduate course to the Madurai Kamaraj University fetched him distinction. He has also hit upon an easy way of tracing and accessing books in libraries.

His ability to strike a rapport even with youngsters is remarkable. He cites the instance when he started wearing khadi. At college, he was required to take classes on Gandhianism. “I had to speak about simplicity and everything Gandhi stood for, but I was clad in expensive clothes. That was when I decided to switch over to khadi,” he relates. Since then he had always practised what he stood for, making himself a role model for many youths.

He was popular among college and school students, and many of them have joined his organisation.

He has long-term plans for his organisation. One is the setting up of a nationalised digital library with modern equipment, which could be accessed by people from all walks of life.

He also wants to set up an international children’s university in Tamil Nadu, with foreign aid. However, he says, a mission has a meaning only when the right people are involved in it. The Directorate of Public Libraries should recruit people with a library science background to be librarians, he says. “And good librarians should have a broad knowledge of everything.”

Five Kids Who Are Smarter Than Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein is one of history’s brightest minds, but recently, two girls too young to drive both bested his alleged IQ score of 160.
The budding geniuses, ages 15 and 12 respectively, earned official IQ scores of 162, putting them in the top 1 percent of the population. (The average IQ is 100.)
But they’re hardly the first youngsters to beat Einstein in the smarts department — at least on paper.
Here, a few notable kids who recently scored higher than Mr. Relativity:
1. Fabiola Mann
Age tested: 15
IQ score: 162
Fabiola, who was born in Goa, India, but currently lives in the U.K., recently begged her parents to pay the fee and let her take Mensa’s IQ test. The 15-year-old “has a purple belt in karate and is now taking tae kwon do in school,” says Forbes. She enjoys the classic genius hobby of chess, plays the piano and guitar, and can sing as well.

2. Olivia Manning
Age tested: 12
IQ score: 162
“Everyone knew 12-year-old British schoolgirl Olivia Manning was smart,” says Madeline Holler at Babble. A quick learner, she required only 24 hours to learn all her lines for a performance of Macbeth. But even she was “surprised when the results of an IQ test came back,” and she scored a 162 — higher than astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and yes, Einstein himself.

3. Jacob Barnett
Age tested: 12
IQ score: 170
At age 2, Jacob Barnett was diagnosed with a mild form of Asperger’s. Turns out, he was just functioning at a higher level than everyone else. Jake, who appears to have an affinity for wearing caps backwards, is already taking advanced college math and astrophysics classes near his home in Indiana. As revealed during a 2011 appearance on Glenn Beck’s Fox News show, Jacob would like to become a professor at a high-ranking college and make high-level math textbooks easier to understand.

4. Pranav Veera
Age tested: 6
IQ score: 176
When he took the test in 2009, this young resident of Loveland, Ohio, could recite the U.S. presidents in order, say the alphabet backward, and tell you the day of the week of any given date going back to the year 2000. He was also 6. Blessed with a photographic memory, Pranav says that one day he’d like to be an astronaut.

5. Victoria Cowie
Age tested: 11
IQ score: 162
Victoria Cowie, another British schoolgirl, “isn’t glued to her studies,” says her mother. “She loves drama and music and plays football too.” But the young girl scored a whopping 162 on her IQ test in 2011, and has been offered scholarships from high-ranking secondary schools. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Victoria says she’d like to work with animals and become a vet.

Indian Origin Fabiola Mann, the Next Gen Einstein

 Fabiola Mann, a 15-year-old London teen with Goan roots has beaten Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking with her IQ score. Her Mensa IQ score of 162 has put her in the top 1 percent of world’s intelligent people, two points above the 160 scored by the scientific greats, reported Karsten Miranda for TNN. Mensa was founded in 1946 as a society for intelligent people.

Fabiola said in an email “I had heard about Mensa and so decided to take their test.” Being inclined towards puzzles, she begged her parents to apply for the test and paid the fee.

Fabiola was awarded her membership certificate by Mensa in August this year. She says she did not expect the score. She had to wait for a month for her scores instead of the usual two weeks as the results were lost in transit.

She said that “The questions were slightly more confusing (from the practice IQ tests online) and we did not have much time to do them, so I could not really tell how I was doing,” as reported by TOI.

Fabiola wishes to study medicine at Cambridge University and become asurgeon as she likes the idea of helping people. Her father Anthony was born in England and is a lecturer. Her mother Rene, a Margao resident who moved to London after marriage, said, “Obviously I had heard about Mensa and genius IQ level children, but I’m amazed that my own daughter is one,” as reported by TOI.

In an interview it was observed that “162 is the highest possible score anyone can achieve in the UK and European test”.

When asked what the Mensa membership means to Fabiola, Rene was quoted saying to TOI “People keep asking me the same thing, and to be honest I don’t know. Hopefully it will mean an entry into the best universities and later job opportunities.”

Fabiola is talented and has a purple belt in karate, learns taekwondo, chess and music too. She plays the piano and the guitar and as per her peers has an amazing voice. She is also presently working on a novel.

பச்சைப் பசேலென காட்சியளிக்கும் இவரது 70 ஏக்கர் தோட்டத்தை, தினமும் எண்ணற்ற விவசாயிகள், ஆச்சரியத்துடன் பார்வையிட்டு வியந்துவருகின்றனர்.

தாய்லாந்து புளி:

விவசாயி சின்னச்சாமி கூறுகையில், “”இயற்கை வேளாண் முறையில் விவசாயம் செய்கிறேன். ரசாயன மருந்து, உரங்களை பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை. எழுபது ஏக்கர் பூமியில், நான்கு கிணறுகள், 25 ஆழ்துளை கிணறுகள் உள்ளன. அதிலிருந்து வெளியேறும் தண்ணீரை சொட்டுநீர் பாசன முறையில் பாய்ச்சுகிறேன். தோட்டத்தில் இரு இடங்களில் குட்டை ஏற்படுத்தி, மழை பெய்யும் போது வீணாகும் தண்ணீரை சேகரிக்கிறேன். குட்டை நிரம்புவதால், நிலத்தடி நீர்மட்டம் குறைவதில்லை. மழைநீர் சேகரிப்பு முறையையும் அமல்படுத்தியுள்ளேன். தண்ணீரை துளி கூட, நாங்கள் வீணாக்குவதில்லை,” என்றார்.

மதிய உணவு வேளை
ஈரோடு, பவர்ஹவுஸ் ரோடு, அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரி எதிரே உள்ள ஏவிஎம் உணவு விடுதி அருகில், காலில் செருப்பு கூட இல்லாதவர்கள், உடம்பில் சட்டை போடாமல் துண்டு மட்டும் கொண்டு இருப்பவர்கள், ஒரு காலத்தில் வெள்ளையாக இருந்த வேட்டியை அணிந்தவர்கள், நைந்து போன புடவையுடன் காணப்பட்டவர்கள் என சுமார் இருபது பேர் அந்த உணவு விடுதி அருகே, கண்களில் கவலையையும், கையில் ஒரு பையையும் வைத்துக்கொண்டு நின்றார்கள்.

சிறிது நேரத்தில் உணவு விடுதியில் இருந்து அழைப்பு வந்ததும் கையில் இருந்த ஒரு டோக்கனையும், ஒரு ரூபாயையும் கொடுத்துவிட்டு ஒரு பார்சல் சாப்பாட்டை வாங்கிக்கொண்டு திரும்பினர்.

பார்த்த நமக்கு ஆச்சர்யம், இந்த காலத்தில் ஒரு ரூபாய்க்கு ஒரு சாப்பாடா என்று!

உள்ளே வாங்க விவரமா சொல்றேன் என்று மெஸ் உரிமையாளர் வெங்கட்ராமன் அழைத்துச் சென்றார், முதல்ல சாப்பிடுங்க என்று சூடான சாப்பாடை சாம்பார், ரசம், மோர் கூட்டு பொரியல், அப்பளத்துடன் வழங்கினார் சுவையாகவும், திருப்தியாகவும் இருந்தது.

நீங்க சாப்பிட்ட சாப்பாட்டின் விலை இருபத்தைந்து ரூபாய், இந்த சாப்பாட்டைதான் இப்போது வந்தவர்கள் ஒரு ரூபாய் கொடுத்து வாங்கிச் சென்றார்கள், அவர்களுக்கு மட்டும்தான் ஒரு ரூபாய். அது ஏன் அவர்களுக்கு மட்டும் ஒரு ரூபாய் என்ற உங்கள் சந்தேகத்தை விளக்கிவிடுகிறேன்.

எங்க ஒட்டலுக்கு எதிரே உள்ள அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் உள் நோயாளிகளாக அனுமதிக்கப்படுபவர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் சுற்றுப்பக்கம் உள்ள கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஏழை, எளிய மக்கள்தான். நோயாளிகளுக்கு மதிய உணவு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் வழங்கப்பட்டுவிடும், ஆனால் கூட இருக்கும் உறவினர்களுக்கு ஆஸ்பத்திரி நிர்வாகப்படி உணவு வழங்கமுடியாது, அவர்கள் வெளியில்தான் சாப்பிட்டுக்கொள்ள முடியும், அவசரமாக வந்தாலும், நிதானமாக வந்தாலும் அவர்கள் கையில் காசு இருக்காது.

ஆகவே அவர்களைச் சார்ந்த உறவினர்கள், நண்பர்கள் பலர் பல நாள் ஒட்டலுக்கு வந்து சாப்பாடு என்ன விலை என்று கேட்பதும் கையில் உள்ள காசை திரும்ப, திரும்ப எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பதும், பிறகு அரைச்சாப்பாடு என்ன விலை என்று கேட்டு அதையும் வாங்காமல் கடைசியில் ஒரு டீயும் வடையும் சாப்பிட்டு போவார்கள் சில நேரம் வெறும் டீயுடன் வயிற்றைக்காயப் போட்டுக்கொண்டு போவார்கள்.

தினமும் ஒரே மாதிரி மனிதர்கள் வருவதில்லை ஆனால் அன்றாடம் வரக்கூடிய இருபதுக்கும் குறையாத மனிதர்கள் பலரும் நான் மேலே சொன்னது போல ஒரே மாதிரிதான் நடந்து கொள்வார்கள்

பசியாற சாப்பாடு போட கடை நடத்தும் எனக்கு இதை பார்தது மனசு பகீர் என்றது. சரி தினமும் இருபது பேருக்கு ஒரு வேளையாவது உணவு தானம் செய்தது போல இருக்கட்டும் என்று எண்ணி இருபது சாப்பாடை பார்சல் கட்டி வைத்துவிடுவேன், ஆனால் இலவசமாக கொடுத்தால் அவர்களது தன்மானம் தடுக்கும், ஆகவே பெயருக்கு ஒரு ரூபாய் வாங்கிக்கொள்கிறேன். மேலும் இந்த இருபது பேரை அடையாளம் காட்டுவதற்காக ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் உள்ள உள்நோயாளிகளை கவனித்துக்கொள்ளும் வார்டு பொறுப்பாளரிடம் இருந்து டோக்கன் வாங்கிவரவேண்டும்.

இதுதான் சார் விஷயம். இது இல்லாம எங்க ஒட்டலில் சாப்பிடும் உடல் ஊனமுற்றவர்களுக்கு 10சதவீதமும், கண் பார்வையற்றவர்களுக்கு இருபது சதவீதமும் எப்போதுமே தள்ளுபடி உண்டு. பொருளாதார நிலமை கூடிவந்தால் மூன்று வேளை கூட கொடுக்க எண்ணியுள்ளேன்.

Meet an Indian Who Said NO to Google!!!!

Entrepreneurs around the world share many common characteristics. But one who challenges the conventional way goes on to be called Jobs, Branson, Zuckerberg and so on. One such in the making is Vineet Devaiah who with his immense level of confidence refused an acquisition offer made by the search giant Google, a company which every entrepreneur today craves for being acquired by. It was at the time when his company was skating on thin ice, with a potential which Google noticed and a bank account with less than a thousand dollars.

In today’s startup ecosystem, where an entrepreneur looks to build a successful company so that he can sell it to a big player and make a billion dollar exit, there is a lot to learn from Devaiah. Let’s take an inspirational walk into Devaiah’s journey, which he told to VentureBeat.

A Teenager’s Entrepreneurial Stint

Hailing from Bangalore, Vineet Devaiah came from a middle class family.

He got access to a high-end computer from the Indian Government’s Antarctic Study Centre which had a lot of data related to weather. He spent most of his time there and built an application with which he was able to predict weather. It was a great boon to farmers of India. Soon the entire farming industry started using it and realizing its potential, Infosys bought it for a million dollars. At that time he didn’t know how much a million dollars was. For him, it was just another number.

The Dilemma and the Birth of “TeliportMe”

Soon after Devaiah’s father lost his life because of cancer. Heartbroken, he decided to devote his time curing this disease instead of developing technology. After a year he lost his patience in doing research and thought to go back to technology, become very rich and use that money to fund a cancer research instead.

Devaiah, then teamed up with his friend Abhinav Asthana and took a vision to build the next General Electric, a huge enterprise with R&D labs cooking up the next versions of technological future. The duo was fascinated with the concept of Teleporting and planned their business in that particular direction. The idea was to experience any kind of environment sitting anywhere through augmented reality. One could sit in his living room and experience Paris. This vision gave birth to the company “TeliportMe”.

They developed their first product called Phototour which was a collection of 3 billion geotagged images from the Internet. Since, it had privacy issues, the next step was an Android app called 360. This application lets users take 360-degree panoramas. It was actually a public-sourced Google Street View.

Refusing Google’s Offer

Impressed by the TeliportMe’s vision and concept, Google made an acquisition offer. It was a great milestone for Devaiah, but he decided to turn it down in pursuit of achieving more such milestones in the future. No, this was not a decision to make, considering that the company had less than a thousand dollars left in its bank account. This decision also ensured that TeliportMe would now compete with Google.

Devaiah expressed his views as, “We feel like Google is a million steps ahead of us in data, technology, money. They could crush us, but Google is paying for Street View, and we’ve crowdsourced our data.”

First Step towards Achieving the Dream

Devaiah then started looking for investment. He applied in an accelerator program called 500 Startups. His application got accepted which was the first for an Indian startup. It gave TeliportMe an excellent access to U.S. funds and influencers it wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Early this year, TeliportMe launched the 360 android app which recently hit its million-user mark. Devaiah said, “People are taking panoramas mostly when they’re out and about, exploring a new area, or on a trip — exactly the kinds of user cases our team wants.”

Devaiah now plans to grow the team in India. He has already decided who the first two or three people would be. He believes that TeliportMe is just a small step towards his dream of actualizing the amusing concept of Teleporting.

When you invite love into your life, faith and hope follow without doubt

A family of a man, his aged mother, his wife and young daughter once were visited by three friends. While the family was inside the house, they heard a knock on the door. The gentleman went to the door to answer the door.

On opening the door he saw three men. The first introduced himself as ‘faith’, the second as ‘hope’ and the third as ‘love.’ They said they were visiting him and if he invited the right person in the other two would follow. However if he invited the wrong person in, the other two would leave. Confused by such an offer, he consulted his family. His aged mother said, “Call ‘faith’ in, we need a lot of it.” The wife said “Call ‘hope’ in for we are struggling.” However, the young daughter said “Papa, please call ‘love’ in for that will bind us.”

The father listened to the counsel of the young daughter and went to the door and announced to his guests that he was inviting ‘love’ in. Strangely the other two followed love. When you invite love into your life, faith and hope follow without doubt.

Life is all about love. Learning to love unselfishly is not easy. It runs counter to our self-centerd nature. Love should be our top priority. Without love, we are bankrupt.

Love leaves a legacy. How you treat others has an most enduring impact; not the wealth and accomplishments you achieve.

Persons who minister to dying patients often say that when a person is near his or her end he or she does not ask for the awards they received or the diplomas they earned. They want around them people who they love. In the final moments of our life we realise that relationships are all that matter and relationships are all about love.

Time is a very important commodity, a precious gift. You can make money but you cannot make time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you will never get back. This is the greatest gift that you can give another. Substitute the word ‘time’ with ‘love’ and you will recognise the joy of giving. You can give without love but you cannot love without giving.

Why is now the best time to express love? Because we don’t know how long we will have the opportunity. If you want to express love it is best to do it now.
