source::::unknown…input from one of my friends…a good article for all the ages..
Natarajan

நினைவாற்றல் நன்றாக இருப்பதற்கு ஆறு முக்கிய கோட்பாடுகள் காரணமாக இருக்கின்றன. அவை;

(Self Confidence)

(Interest)

(Motivation)

(Awareness)

(Understanding)

(Health)

Japanese Way of Cost Control ….

Source::::unknown….input from one of my friends. nice story and guide for standing out in any business…
Natarajan

A fantastic sentence written on every Japanese bus stop.
Only buses will stop here – Not your time.
So Keep walking towards your goal.

Japanese way of cost efficiency

The Taj hotel group had invited Mr. Masai Imai from Japan to hold a workshop for its staff.

The staff were very skeptical – the hotel is doing excellent business, this person from Japan has no exposure to hotel industry – what exactly is he going to teach?

But everybody gathered as planned for the workshop in the conference hall sharp at 9 am.

Mr. Masai was introduced to them – a not so impressive personality, nor the English all that good; spoke as if he was first formulating each sentence in Japanese and then translating it into rather clumsy English.

“Good morning! Let’s start work. I am told this is a workshop; but I see neither work nor shop. So let’s proceed where work is happening. Let’s start with the first room on the first floor.”

Mr. Masai, followed by the senior management, the participants, the video camera crew trouped out of the conference room and proceeded to the destination.

That happened to be the laundry room of the hotel.

Mr. Masai entered the room and stood at the window, “beautiful view!” he said.

The staff knew it; they need not invite a Japanese consultant to tell them this!

“A room with such a beautiful view is being wasted as a laundry room. Shift the laundry to the basement and convert this into a guest room.”

Aa Haa! Now nobody had ever thought about that!

The manager said, “Yes, it can be done.”

“Then let’s do it,” Mr. Masai said.

“Yes sir, I will make a note of this and we will include it in the report on the workshop that will be prepared.” Manager

“Excuse me, but there is nothing to note down in this. Let’s just do it, just now.” Mr. Masai.

“Just now?” Manager

“Yes, decide on a room on the ground floor/basement and shift the stuff out of this room right away. It should take a couple of hours, right?” asked Mr. Masai.

“Yes.” Manager.

“Let’s come back here just before lunch. By then all this stuff will have got shifted out and the room must be ready with the carpets, furniture etc. and from today you can start earning the few thousand that you charge your customers for a night.”

“Ok, Sir.” The manager had no option.

The next destination was the pantry. The group entered. At the entrance were two huge sinks full of plates to be washed.

Mr. Masai removed his jacket and started washing the plates.

“Sir, Please, what are you doing?” the manager didn’t know what to say and what to do.

“Why, I am washing the plates”, Mr. Masai.

“But sir, there is staff here to do that.” Manager Mr. Masai continued washing, “I think sink is for washing plates, there are stands here to keep the plates and the plates should go into the stands.”

All the officials wondered – did they require a consultant to tell them this?

After finishing the job, Mr. Masai asked, “How many plates do you have?’

“Plenty, so that there should never be any shortage.” answered the Manager.

Mr. Masai said, “We have a word in Japanese -‘Muda’. Muda means delay, Muda means unnecessary spending. One lesson to be learned in this workshop is to avoid both. If you have plenty of plates, there will be delay in cleaning them up. The first step to correct this situation is to remove all the excess plates.”

“Yes, we will say this in the report.” Manager.

“No, wasting our time in writing the report is again an instance of ‘Muda’. We must pack the extra plates in a box right away and send these to whichever other section of Taj requires these. Throughout the workshop now we will find out where all we find this ‘Muda’ hidden.”

And then at every spot and session, the staff eagerly awaited to find out Muda and learn how to avoid it.

On the last day, Mr. Masai told a story.

“A Japanese and an American, both fond of hunting, met in a jungle. They entered deep jungle and suddenly realized that they had run out of bullets. Just then they heard a lion roaring. Both started running. But the Japanese took a short break to put on his sports shoes.

The American said, “What are you doing? We must first get to the car.”

The Japanese responded, “No. I only have to ensure that I remain ahead of you.”

All the participants engrossed in listening to the story, realized suddenly that the lion would stop after getting his victim!

“The lesson is: competition in today’s world is so fierce, that it is important to stay ahead of other, even by just a couple of steps. And you have such a huge and naturally well endowed country. If you remember to curtail your production expenditure and give the best quality always, you will be miles ahead as compared to so many other countries in the world.”, concluded Mr. Masai.

Petrico from Argentina!!!!!!!

A Note From Gandhiji….

A note from Gandhiji

PARSHATHY J. NATH   in THE HINDU   on OCT 2 2012….

Natarajan….An interesting article in The Hindu  today has taken me to those days when i was an Apprentice with SHRI. M.J.Vijayaraghavan in the firm of Auditors  Messers .M.S.JAGANNATHAN & VISVANATHAN , Coimbatore during July 1969 – May 1973….

I must say that i was lucky to be CA apprentice with such a wonderful firm of  Chartered Accountants .  Infact i was the Second Apprentice….Articled Clerk…. for  MR. M.J. Vijayaraghavan…..we used to call him MJV …… As a partner of  Great firm of auditors, MJV  used to travel  in a JAVA Motorcycle only!!!!.. NO CAR !!!!… Infact , i used to be his pillion rider for most of the days when we go for audit!!!!!.. Such a simple man .

I used to tell my friends and family members and other colleagues at workspot that the firm of MSJ&V  taught me a lot of value system for life besides  Audit training.  I am thankful to GOD for my association with  MJV and MSJ&V.

I sincerely pray for long life for MJV and his firm…

Natarajan

Auditor J. Vijayaraghavan treasures a thank you note that Gandhi wrote to his father’s firm for having audited a Harijan Welfare Account.

I thank you for your audit of Harijan account”, scribbled Gandhiji in a note to M.S Krishnaswami & Jagannathan way back in 1935. Eight decades later, the 80-year-old M.J. Vijayaraghavan, the son of M.S. Jagannathan, looks at the framed letter and remembers, “My father was only happy to audit this account. Our family supported the freedom struggle and believed in its values.”

An antique table fan, old wooden tables and chairs greet you as you enter the office at R.S. Puram where Vijayaraghavan sits. It is maintained the same way as it had been during his father’s time, he says. The firm was reconstituted as M. S. Jagannathan & Visvanathan in 1967 when Vijayaraghavan’s uncle decided to shift the office to Chennai.

0“The new firm in Coimbatore was headed by my father, M.S. Jagannathan. After my father’s death, it was headed by S. V. Visvanathan and then by my brother M.J Rajagopalan. In 1998 when my brother passed away I took charge of the firm.”

His uncle, M.S. Krishnaswami was involved in the freedom movement and was an active member of Indian National Congress. “I remember my father saying how he even quit a job in a foreign firm because he would not wear anything other than khadi. So strong was his sense of patriotism.”

Vijayaraghavan’s father’s brother, M.S. Krishnaswami who was involved in the freedom movement, did not however forget about his responsibilities towards the family or the firm. “He made sure that my father was there to manage everything”, recalls Vijayaraghavan.

It was Krishnaswami’s connection to the freedom movement, which drew Gandhi’s attention to the firm. Gandhi approached Jagannathan to audit the Harijan account that he had maintained for Harijan welfare. “My father immediately agreed to it. A few newspapers approached him later for publishing the letter sent by Gandhi expressing gratitude. However, he was against the idea of publicizing it,” says Vijayaraghavan.

Vijayaraghavan also remembers C. Rajagopalachari and M.S. Sadashivam, visiting his home. “There would be a huge crowd around our house. Our support to Congress continued even after Independence. During the Indo-china war, my mother donated her ornaments for the war.”

There were only few auditing firms in Coimbatore those days. “The competition of course was less then. However, my father would tell me how it was difficult to get the license for practising auditing.” Vijayaraghavan’s nephew S. Aditya, is the fourth generation member of the family who has joined the firm. Vijayaraghavan says examinations were much more challenging during his time. “In my days we were not allowed to use a calculator. We used to calculate six digit figures. And we had to get them right in the first attempt itself!”

Even though it was a profession that he inherited, his father always told him to make a name for himself. “I used to work as an apprentice initially in the firm. So when I was sent to the companies to audit their accounts, my father would not tell them that I am his son. ‘You should always say you are an ordinary clerk. Otherwise, they will treat you with special preference’, he used to tell me. ”

The firm has audited 80 to 100 public and private companies, including the accounts of film industries till date.

Without Love , We are Bankrupt….

When you invite love into your life, faith and hope follow without doubt

A family of a man, his aged mother, his wife and young daughter once were visited by three friends. While the family was inside the house, they heard a knock on the door. The gentleman went to the door to answer the door.

On opening the door he saw three men. The first introduced himself as ‘faith’, the second as ‘hope’ and the third as ‘love.’ They said they were visiting him and if he invited the right person in the other two would follow. However if he invited the wrong person in, the other two would leave. Confused by such an offer, he consulted his family. His aged mother said, “Call ‘faith’ in, we need a lot of it.” The wife said “Call ‘hope’ in for we are struggling.” However, the young daughter said “Papa, please call ‘love’ in for that will bind us.”

The father listened to the counsel of the young daughter and went to the door and announced to his guests that he was inviting ‘love’ in. Strangely the other two followed love. When you invite love into your life, faith and hope follow without doubt.

Life is all about love. Learning to love unselfishly is not easy. It runs counter to our self-centerd nature. Love should be our top priority. Without love, we are bankrupt.

Love leaves a legacy. How you treat others has an most enduring impact; not the wealth and accomplishments you achieve.

Persons who minister to dying patients often say that when a person is near his or her end he or she does not ask for the awards they received or the diplomas they earned. They want around them people who they love. In the final moments of our life we realise that relationships are all that matter and relationships are all about love.

Time is a very important commodity, a precious gift. You can make money but you cannot make time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you will never get back. This is the greatest gift that you can give another. Substitute the word ‘time’ with ‘love’ and you will recognise the joy of giving. You can give without love but you cannot love without giving.

Why is now the best time to express love? Because we don’t know how long we will have the opportunity. If you want to express love it is best to do it now.

3 Computer Technologies that Will Power the Future….

From the initial days of number-crunching by languages of FORTRAN, to the procedural methodology of Pascal or C, and later, the object-oriented paradigm of C++ and Java, we have come a long way. In this age of information overload, technologies that can just solve problems through steps and procedures are no longer adequate.

We need technology to detect complex patterns, trends, understand nuances in human language and to automatically solve problems. In this new era, the following three technologies are furthering the frontiers of computing technology:

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS

By 2016, 130 exabytes will rip through the Internet. The number of mobile devices will exceed the human population this year, and by 2016, the number of connected devices will touch 10 billion.

Devices connected to the Net will range from cellphones, laptops, tablets, sensors and the millions of devices based on the ‘Internet of things’. A hot and happening trend in computing is the ability to make business and strategic decisions by determining patterns, trends and outliers among mountains of data. Predictive analytics will be a key discipline in our future and its experts will be much sought after.

Predictive analytics uses statistical methods to mine intelligence, information and patterns in structured, unstructured and streams of data. Predictive analytics will be applied across many domains, including banking, insurance, retail, telecom and energy.

There are also applications for energy grids and water management, besides those that determine user sentiment by mining data from social networks.

COGNITIVE COMPUTING

The most famous technological product in the domain of cognitive computing is IBM’s supercomputer, Watson, an artificial intelligence computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language.

Watson is best known for successfully trouncing a national champion in the popular U.S. TV quiz competition, Jeopardy. What made this victory more astonishing was that the supercomputer was able to decipher the nuances of natural language and pick the correct answer.

Following the success at Jeopardy, Watson has now been employed by a leading medical insurance firm in the U.S. to diagnose medical illnesses and recommend treatment options for patients. Watson will be able to analyse 1 million books, or roughly 200 million pages of information. Another well-known example of cognitive computing is Siri, the voice recognition app on the iPhone. The earlier avatar of cognitive computing was expert systems based on artificial intelligence. These expert systems were inference engines that were based on knowledge rules.

The most famous among the expert systems were ‘Dendral’ and ‘Mycin’.

AUTONOMIC COMPUTING

This is another computing trend that is set to become prevalent in the networks of tomorrow. Autonomic computing refers to the self-managing characteristics of a network. Typically, it signifies the ability of a network to self-heal in the event of failures or faults.

Autonomic network can quickly localise and isolate faults in the network while keeping other parts of the network unaffected. Besides, these networks can quickly correct and ‘heal’ the faulty hardware without human intervention. Autonomic networks are typical in smart grids where a fault can be quickly isolated and the network healed without resulting in a major outage in the electrical grid.

These are truly exciting times in computing as we move towards true intelligence.
