Samsung….A Success Story …Worth Reading !!!

Samsung flash memory and processors

In the past year and a half, Samsung, a company that makes everything from dishwashers to smartphones, has become one the most powerful and recognizable names in tech.

A lot of people are even lumping Samsung together with AppleFacebookMicrosoftAmazon, and Google as one of the most important tech companies right now.
So how did Samsung get to where it is today?

Samsung was founded by Byung-Chull Lee in 1938 in Taegu, Korea. The company started as a food exporter in Korea and shipped items like dried fish and flour to China.

Samsung got into other businesses throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including life insurance and textiles.

Samsung Electronics started in 1969. That division mostly made TVs. Samsung’s first black and white TV went on sale in 1970.

Samsung expanded into even more fields in the 1970s, including petrochemicals. It also started making washing machines, refrigerators, and microwaves.

Samsung began to focus even more on electronics in the 1980s. The company began producing color TVs, personal computers, VCRs, and tape recorders. This was also the decade Samsung started exporting more of its products to North America.

Samsung teamed up with BP in 1989 to form Samsung BP Chemicals. The company sells chemical products in Korea.

In the early and mid-1990s, Samsung started producing memory and hard drives for use in personal computers. That’s still a big part of Samsung’s business today.

According to company legend, one of Samsung’s first mobile phones did not work when it came out in 1995. When Samsung’s chairman Kun-Hee Lee found out, he visited the factory where the phones were made and reportedly had the entire inventory burned.

After that initial slip up, Samsung began taking mobile more seriously by the late 1990s. It released one of its first Internet-ready phones in 1999. Mobile would eventually grow into Samsung’s most profitable business.

In the late 1990s, Samsung made more advances in television. It created the world’s first mass-produced digital TV in 1998. It had a full lineup of digital TVs by 1999.

Samsung began making HD TVs in the early 2000s. It went on to make Blu-Ray players and other home theater equipment. Today, Samsung makes some of the best HD TVs you can buy

Samsung introduced its first flagship Android phone, the Galaxy S, at the Mobile World Congress in 2010. The phone is now in its third generation and regarded as one of the best smartphones you can buy.

Samsung released the Galaxy Tab in the fall of 2010. The 7-inch device was the first mainstream Android tablet.

Apple”s iWatch….Some Exciting Features ….

Apple has the potential to drastically reinvent the traditional smart watch.     apple iwatch on wrist
There are already a host of smartwatches out there, like the Cookoo Watch and Pebble, and one source tells us that Google’s currently working on a smart watch of its own.
Earlier this year, reports emerged of Apple’s apparent plans to start making a smartwatch.
According to Bruce Tognazzini, a principal with the Nielsen Norman Group and former Apple employee who specializes in human-computer interaction, an Apple iWatch could have a vast impact on our lives.

Here are several reasons why you should be really excited:

Apple can solve the “having-to-remove-the-watch-from-your-arm-problem” by implementing wireless charging, which the company holds a patent for.
Apple’s patent for curved glass screens could help reduce the clunky factor.
There won’t need to be a bunch of buttons and menus because Siri will be able to handle complex tasks.
The iWatch could facilitate communication with your iPhone so you can see who’s calling.
It could eliminate the need for typing in passwords on Apple devices.
You may never lose your iPhone again because the iWatch will alert you if you start moving out of range.
It could use sensors to track how many calories you’re burning and miles you’re walking, and monitor things like blood pressure.
If the NFC chip makes its way to the iWatch, you could just swipe your watch over a reader to make payments.
It will very likely support music functions.
The iWatch could function as remote control via compatibility with Siri.
Apple could use the iWatch to fix its maps by using crowdsourced pressure data.

Soon, A Car that Runs on Air !!!

If you have ever grimaced at your never ending petrol bill and dreamed of a car that runs on fresh air, your prayers are about to be answered.

French car giant PSA Peugeot Citroen believes that it can put an air- powered vehicle on the road by 2016, the Daily Mail reported.
Its scientists say it will knock 45 percent off fuel bills for an average motorist, and when driving in towns and cities costs could be slashed by as much as 80 percent because the car will be running on air for four-fifths of the time.
The system works by using a normal internal combustion engine, special hydraulics and an adapted gearbox along with compressed air cylinders that store and release energy. This enables it to run on petrol or air, or a combination of the two.
Air power would be used solely for city use, automatically activated below 43mph and available for ’60 to 80 percent of the time in city driving’. By 2020, the cars could be achieving an average of 117 miles a gallon, the company predicts.
The air compression system can re-use all the energy normally lost when slowing down and braking. The motor and a pump are in the engine bay, fed by a compressed air tank underneath the car, running parallel to the exhaust.
The revolutionary new ‘Hybrid Air’ engine system – the first to combine petrol with compressed air – is a breakthrough for hybrid cars because expensive batteries will no longer be needed.
Cars fitted with Hybrid Air will be about 1,000 pounds cheaper to buy than current hybrid models.
For more than two years, 100 elite scientists and engineers have been working on the air-powered car in top-secret conditions at Peugeot’s research and development centre at Velizy, just south of Paris.
Hybrid Air is the centrepiece of Peugeot chief executive Philippe Varin’s efforts to restore the fortunes of the historic car maker.
The revolutionary system will be able to be installed on any normal family car without altering its external shape or size or reducing the boot size, provided the spare wheel is not stored there.
From the outside, an air-powered car will look identical to a conventional car.

Will Computers Have Sensory Powers ?

Nandagopal Rajan in BUSINESS TODAY….

Natarajan

Will computers have sensory powers in the near future? Well, IBM thinks so.

The “IBM 5 in 5”- a list of innovations that have the potential to change the way people work, live and interact during the next five years – lists touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell as the next big things in computing. The list is based on market and societal trends as well as emerging technologies from IBM’s R&D labs.

“We have already witnessed the benefits of cognitive systems for advancing numerous aspects of the human experience – from agriculture and healthcare to utility management and weather forecasting. We envision a day when computers make sense of the world around them just like human brain relies on interacting with the world using multiple senses,” said Ramesh Gopinath, Director – India Research Lab and Chief Technology Officer, IBM India/South Asia.

Here are IBM’s five predictions:

Touch: IBM thinks within five years we will have mobile device that will allow you to touch and feel products, thus redefining retail business across the world. IBM says its scientists are developing applications for the retail, healthcare and other sectors using haptic, infrared and pressure sensitive technologies to simulate touch, such as the texture and weave of a fabric – as a shopper brushes her finger over the image of the item on a device screen. Utilising the vibration capabilities of the phone, every object will have a unique set of vibration patterns that represents the touch experience, said a release.

Sight: In the next five years, systems will not only be able to look at and recognise the contents of images and visual data, they will turn the pixels into meaning, beginning to make sense out of it similar to the way a human views and interprets a photograph. So if a future computer sees a red light it will understand that this means stop. A precursor to this can be seen in the form of the Google Goggles app that recognizes products from photographs and gives you info on the same. But IBM says that in five years, these capabilities will be put to work in healthcare by making sense out of massive volumes of medical information. For instance computers will be able to differentiate healthy from diseased tissue.

Sound: A distributed system of clever sensors will detect elements of sound such as sound pressure, vibrations and sound waves at different frequencies and interpret to predict when trees will fall in a forest or when a landslide is imminent. Similarly, by learning about emotion and being able to sense mood, systems will pinpoint aspects of a conversation and analyze pitch, tone and hesitancy to help us have more productive dialogues that could improve customer call center interactions, or allow us to seamlessly interact with different cultures.

Taste: IBM researchers are developing a computing system that experiences flavor. It works by breaking down ingredients to their molecular level and blend the chemistry of food compounds with the psychology behind what flavors and smells humans prefer. By comparing this with millions of recipes, the system will be able to create new flavor combinations that pair. The computer will be able to use algorithms to determine the precise chemical structure of food and why people like certain tastes.

Smell: During the next five years, tiny sensors embedded in your computer or cell phone will detect if you’re coming down with a cold or other illness. By analyzing odors, biomarkers and thousands of molecules in someone’s breath, doctors will have help diagnosing and monitoring the onset of ailments such as liver and kidney disorders, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy by detecting which odors are normal and which are not. IBM scientists are already sensing environmental conditions and gases to preserve works of art.

Meanwhile, Intel says sensors that ad more security to your device as well as facial analysis and gestures will become a part of daily computing by the end of 2013.

Butterfly to Keep Apple Away !!!!!!

 source:::::silicon india net..

Natarajan

At HTC, a Butterfly a day is keeping Apple away. The new Smartphone from HTC is all set to take on the iPhone. Though it’s pricing has been kept under wraps, its features and looks have already got the tech pundits lauding about it. It stands out in its design which is similar to Apple, yet with a bigger 5 inch screen.

And talking about the screen, you can watch and share videos with 1080p full HD display. The screen resolution, as many reviewers agree, is better than iPhone’s.
The Apple iPhone 5 does weigh a little less. Infact, in terms of apps, memory storage and well, because it’s an iPhone, it does offer some tough competition. But then, the operating system and RAM also matter. HTC runs on Google’s reliable Android platform with 1.5 GHz RAM, with Quadcore. Simply put, you can simultaneously run multiple apps at the same time and easily multitask.

Google maps are much more reliable with features such as transport facility shown, while Apple maps lack this feature. Moreover, accuracy is much higher in Google maps.
The Butterfly can flutter even in rain, shine or sand. The makers claim that the phone is waterproof, which is definitely a welcome feature. Cameras are provided both in front and back, including the 88 degree ultra wide angle lens. Let us not forget that Apple’s scan and click feature, as shown in the ad with cutely dressed children, doesn’t work horizontally. This gives HTC an edge.
HTC also has included a built-in amplifier with BeatsAudio. This essentially means you’ll be blown away by the audio quality. But the real icing on this cake is the way it is built on the inside. The makers of the Smartphone have placed the battery first and the components on top on it, making it unique and compact in design.

10 Storey Building in 48 Hours !!!…

A team of Indian construction workers has claimed a new record after they erected a 10-storey building in 48 hours, news reports say.

The building, dubbed Instacon, was completed well before a Saturday-evening deadline in the northern city of Mohali, broadcaster NDTV reported.

A total of 200 workers, including 25 technicians and engineers, had worked at a furious pace since Thursday and completed nearly seven storeys in the first 24 hours.

The quality of construction – the building must be able to withstand major earthquakes – was certified by a state-run scientific agency, the report said.

The building was made with steel and pre-fabricated materials, engineers at the site told the IANS news agency.

The air-conditioning system, lighting and operational toilets will be completed later.

‘Our effort was to put the 10-storeyed structure in place within 48 hours,’ an engineer said. ‘We wanted to prove that this could be done.’

Harpal Singh, the owner of the building company, said the effort was a record for India, but it was unclear whether it was a world record.

A Chinese company claimed to have put up a 15-floor building in six days in 2010.

The idea to construct such a building came to Singh when the construction of his own house was delayed by absent workers.
