Parents or the Pot of Gold !!!!

source:::: a thought provoking article by DR.V.SRINIVAS in THE HINDU highlighting the present day situation in many homes in India .. But who is responsible for this?….In most of the cases , it is the parents who are running after their children right from the day of PRE KG and LKG and mould the child”s mental makeup for pursuing the higher studies at an unknown alien land rather than encouraging their kids to understand the strength and value system of our own motherland education and career in our own home land !!!!. SO there is no point in blaming the children who after all look always to their parents for all guidance and support.

Sunday ward rounds are always a leisurely and relatively stress-free activity for a geriatrician like me. My main purpose today is to get consent from Mr. Krishnan. His wife, Padma, has a large bowel growth and needs surgery soon. He is aged 78 and she is 73 and live on their own. Murali, their son, has been known to me for two decades and, no prizes for guessing, is a U.S. resident. I was hoping that he would come soon, enabling us to go ahead with treatment. Mr. Krishnan has early dementia and Parkinson’s disease — not the fittest person to look after a post-operative elderly patient.

My heart sank with one look at Mr. Krishnan. He looked forlorn and dejected. “Looks like he is not coming — some important project deadline. So I will have to go it alone. Do you think I will manage?”

The very question I did not want to hear, but the patient’s health does not permit luxuries. “It is ok, we will arrange for some help after discharge and I will also drop in if required.”

Mr. Krishnan looked marginally better but still the dejection remained. “Why do you think we are in this situation — is there anything that we did not do well, wrong priorities, maybe? Or, is it just our bonding that went awry? Do you see people like us daily?” he paused and added, “Oh, I hope not — we don’t want people like us to be in this situation.”

I was getting a little edgy. “No, Mr. Krishnan, unfortunately you are just a prototype elderly of modern Chennai or for that matter any metro. There are a lot of people who are in a similar situation and unfortunately there are a lot of people much worse.”

Mr. Krishnan persisted, “How do you deal with these helpless souls?”

I sounded rather paternalistic, “Well, we are here to help them!” I know only too well that it is a recurrent nightmare for someone like me. A sick person in the hospital with no next of kin to discuss issues and we have to make all tricky decisions with enormous adverse repercussions. It has always been a puzzle that many people choose to live abroad leaving the elderly parents in their homeland. It is certainly a significant sociological phenomenon impacting adversely many issues of health care of the elderly.

This has led to the mushrooming of old-age homes, or euphemistically christened gated communities, and also services aimed at home care for the elderly. A recent ruling by the government making it compulsory for children to look after their parents makes one wonder at the need for such a high level intervention. One feels ashamed to be an Indian with our much touted cultural values and respect for elders.

Mr. Krishnan must have heard my thoughts as he interjected, “So you think we did not do anything wrong to get into this situation?

With a deep sigh, I told him that we as parents all have to share the responsibility for this sad situation.

“I wish you recall the days when your children were going to school. We were only talking about the U.S. and the U.K. as the places to be, the places where you earned well! More important, you could proudly claim in any family function that your son was pursuing studies in Wharton or Kellogg school. We did not feel bad about wearing T- shirts with ‘I love New York’ written boldly on it.

There was the mad rush to the IIT, a stepping stone to go to the U.S., not among all, but in a significant percentage. The convenient excuse we gave to our friends and relatives was that there were no appropriate jobs here in India. Perhaps, that was true to some extent then but we never attempted sincerely to get a job here. It certainly never occurred to us parents that youngsters should try and build the nation to the level that made us proud.

After all, this is our motherland we are talking about. For us, MIT meant only the one in Boston, not the one at Chromepet! Our kids grew in such biased environs and not surprisingly they looked down on our nation and us. The western media and Hollywood did not help us either.

Mr. Krishnan was softer this time: “Well, maybe it is partly our fault, but what about these smart young chaps? They are mature enough to realise the drawbacks of living in a foreign country. They want to get back when the daughter starts dating foreigners and whenever there is recession, they think of the support of family and friends here. But nowhere in these equations are parents included. After all, we sacrificed so much for their education and well-being. Don’t you think it is totally unjustified?”

I smiled wryly: “Certainly, that is beyond debate. But is there anything we can do about it now? I think what can’t be cured has to be endured! Please remember there are still a lot of families where the children coordinate and take turns to look after the parents financially and otherwise. And without hurting your sentiments, I may add that the work ethics are different here, there seems to be a decent level of meritocracy in those countries and more avenues for personal and professional development in many fields. So each individual perhaps has to look at his comfort level and decide on this tricky issue.

Mr. Krishnan was not impressed. “Perhaps, it is a curse that we should suffer in silence and alone when we need people most. Can’t blame you for these. Hope you have planned well for your future!”

I thought he noted my fast receding hairline and, feeling a little depressed, I said: “I hope I have! Only time can tell. Sorry to have talked like that to you. I personally feel that we should think on a broader basis, perhaps each person has a reason to be abroad, however flimsy it may look to you. But there can be no excuse whatsoever for abandoning the care of parents in exchange for a career growth or financial gains. They should realise that without the hard work and affection of parents, no child could hope to grow! And most important, the mutual emotional support and bonding have no financial equivalent!”

Mr. Krishnan smiled for the first time this morning: “Can’t blame you — you have always been diplomatic! Anyway, are you going anywhere today?”

“Well, yes I have to take my grandson to his IIT tuition class at 10.”

“Oh, another IIT-ian in the making? How old is he?”

“He is already six years!” I rushed towards the exit.

River Ganga, a Source of Cancer in India

By SiliconIndia  |
: Ganga is considered the sacred river and the deep bond that the people of India share with this spiritual entity is immense. Now this bond is making many pay a high price, after being diagnosed with cancer. The river was placed on the list of five most polluted rivers back in 2007. Adding to the state of its pollution in is the raised amount of industrial waste which is drained out into the river ravaging it further into a life threatening source, contradicting its real purpose.

Traces of heavy metals and mercury has been detected in the river water says a survey compiled by the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRG) supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research. It has resulted in the largest number of gall bladder cancer cases worldwide, especially among the Indian population settled on the river plains.

The river was known to be threatening to the lives of the many people who consume and use its water even before the report was compiled. The pollution is also a concern to the lives of over 140 fish species, about 90 amphibian species and the rare Ganga river dolphins. There was an initiation of cleaning up the river with the Ganga Action Plan. It didn’t culminate because of the deficient number of technical expertise and corruption, no good environmental planning, no support from religious authorities and due to religious beliefs and Indian tradition.

With the high level of gall bladder cancer cases due to the river water Dr Sameer Kaul, a cancer consultant with Apollo Hospital in Delhi, remarks “High gall bladder cancer cases are understandable. The gall bladder is a digestive organ and if anything goes wrong with it, the causative is linked with food and water,” as reported by Deccan Chronicle.

As per the survey done in Bihar, UP and West Bengal by the NCRG it shows that in every 10,000 people reported 450 men and 1000 women suffer with gall bladder cancer. India also shows the highest number of prostate cancer cases. Kaul further explained “A high intake of animal protein is known to cause prostrate cancer. The people living in the river basin take large quantities of fish which are also infected by these polluting waters.”

“The Ganga water is now filled with arsenic, lead, cadium, fluoride and heavy metals,” said Dr Jaideep Biswas, director of the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata, this has drastically increased the number of cancer cases near the flood plains of Ganga.

These pollutants drop down to the river bed, which eventually contaminate the ground water used by the public for drinking and cooking. Because of these pollutants 25 people in every one lakh population suffer with different types of cancer like urinary bladder, kidneys, food pipe, liver and skin cancer.

Mythological Tale of Diwali!

India is a land of cultural heritage and festivals are the main attractions. It is the land where each and every celebration has some significance and so does Diwali. It is one of the most glamorous festivals celebrated in India and is popularly known as the ‘festival of lights’. Diwali signifies the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

Diwali: Celebration of five days

The festival Diwali is a five day celebration and it starts with ‘Dhanteras’. This day holds important significance for the business community because of the customary buying of precious metals like gold and silver on this very day. It is an auspicious day when Hindus purchase gold, silver and utensils and it is believed to be a sign of good luck.

The second day of Diwali is known as ‘Naraka Chaturdasi’. On this day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasur and made the world free from his terror.

The third day of Diwali is the worship of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. This day signifies welcoming of wealth, health and prosperity. On this day Lakshmi Pooja is performed and people lit earthen diyas and candles all over their house and burn firecrackers to keep away evils.

The fourth day of Diwali marks ‘Kartika Shudda Padyami’. And, the fifth day ends with ‘Bhai Dooj’ which signifies the bonding between brother and sister.

Celebration of Diwali in India:

Diwali is celebrated grandly in the Northern part of India. All the buildings, shops, houses and streets are illuminated with clay lamps, electric bulbs and candles. They have a tradition to gift their near and dear ones with silver coins, sweets and dry fruits. Interestingly, in places like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, people play cards in Diwali. In South India, Diwali celebration starts with cleaning the house and putting kolam (rangoli). Everywhere in India, bursting firecrackers is the main attraction.

However, in the eastern part of India in West Bengal, Kali Pooja is another important draw of Bengal soon after the grand celebration of Durga Pooja. West Bengal celebrates Kali Pooja which coincides with the Diwali Festival with the same enthusiasm. The only evident difference is that while rest of India worships Goddess Lakshmi on this day, Goddess Kali is the chief deity for the occasion in West Bengal. This is celebrated on the eve of Amavasya of Kartik month as per Hindu calendar which is on the month of October/ November.

Wrapping up:

Firecrackers, sweets, earthen diyas and rangoli are the known flavours of Diwali celebration. It is a celebration of lights. India celebrates this festival with great joy and belief. It is a time that reunites family, friends and relatives. Happy Diwali!

That Is Mother !!!

Source:::: input from one of my friends thro facebook … a thought to be shared with you all….

Natarajan

Amma, there is nothing there at home for lunch today? son called up his mother`s office and asked. But the mother took it by surprise and asked, “How come you are coming for lunch today?

Generally you eat outside after college and go directly to tuitions”?
But amma, you know I am having severe cold and I cannot eat outside today, I am so hungry and there is nothing left at home for me to eat?

But my dear, you didn’t tell me anything in the morning that you will be there for lunch, thats why I prepared enough for your dad and my tiffin only.

Amma please don’t give excuses and explanations, I am getting late for my tutions and I am going now.

But my dear son, what will you have now? You told you are hungry. I am so far that I cannot even come home to prepare you anything.

Leave it amma, I am getting late, and nothing will happen even if I stay fasting one time. Bye.

The incident was pricking her mind through out the day till she leave the office. On reaching home she was not in a mood even to have a cup of coffee. She was still feeling bad that her son is fasting right from the morning.

Generally she use to prepare some extra food, but of late she realised that it is going waste and stopped it today only. She felt very guilty and sad that her son had nothing to eat for lunch.

As soon as her son came from tuitions she made some hot snacks and served him. And both of them were happy for viewing the tamil serial in sun tv.

As usual the appa, amma and the son assembled in the dining table for dinner. She served both of them food and removed her lunch box from her purse.

Why amma, you are eating you lunch box now? You had any lunch party today? The son asked.

Appa said, no dear she didn’t had anything in lunch today. She told me that she was not at all in a mood to have anything after she came to know that you went your classes starving.

The son tried to hide his emotions and blaming himself. I should not have over reacted in that situation. I don’t remember what I have told her due to anger because of my hunger.

When I could convey my anger, I should have conveyed that also, that I had some heavy snacks before classes. See, because of me my poor mother is fasting right from the morning.

He could not eat anything and hugged her mother and confessed what had happen and pleaded for pardon for being so much rude.
The mother and son were blaming themselves for the situation and consoling each other. Yes that is mother.

The father was looking them as a mere spectator as tears flowing all over their cheeks and all were filled, with out having any food………………………………….

This Diwali, Spread a Little Love…..

An appeal from SAI GROUP….To all of us…

Natarajan

If you plan to spend around Rs. 2000 on crackers for Diwali , this year for your own self enjoyment, kindly apportion a small amount out

this Rs 2000 towards meeting the basic needs of neglected and needy one like poor children and elderly persons …

Just try this way this year. You will realise the difference in your joy in the festival season ..

The biggest disease today is not leprosy or TB….but rather one”s feeling of neglected or unwanted….

Whenever you come across such child . kindly transfer your love , sympathy and care to that child instead of your glaring eyes, ignoring

behaviour and a kind of aversion feeling and look…

Joy of Giving is worth Millions…..Joy of givind and sharing is such a pleasure that you will realise only when you experience it!!!

Helpful Answers From Granny!

As we were walking by, we saw granny sitting on a rocking chair,,
and thought it would be the perfect time to ask her advice
about some daily problems we’ve been having around the house!

“Granny! Our kitchen has been invaded by the nearest ant nest!”
says: ‘Ants hate cucumbers. Find the ant hole and leave
cucumber skin next to it, they won’t poke their little heads out!’

“Granny! Our ice always comes out ‘foggy’ and opaque, how can we make
nice clear ice?”
says: ‘If you want clear ice, just boil the water before you
freeze them and keep them isolated, it’s the other particles in the
water that makes it look dirty.’

“Granny! I got chewing gum stuck on my favorite shirt and I can’t get
it off!”
Says: ‘If you have chewing gum stuck to your clothes, put them
in the freezer for about an hour. Then you should be able to simply
remove the frozen chewing gum by hand.’

Granny next to her: ‘Sorry to cut in, but tell them they can also
smear a tiny bit of peanut butter on it and let it sit. The fat in the
butter will cause the chewing gum to love its hold.’

“Granny! We have unwanted guests in the house – rats!”
says:’Spill some black pepper where ever you find mice or rats,
they’ll take one sniff and head for the hills!’

“Granny! My hair has lost its luster and spark!”
says: ‘If you want luster in your hair (personally I prefer
distinguished grey hair), add a spoon of vinegar and then wash really
well. The luster and shine will reappear!’

“Granny! I can never squeeze all the juice out of lemons, there’s
always more left over.”
says: ‘Soak the lemons in hot water for one hour, and then
you’ll easily squeeze out all the juice.’

“Granny! Remember that shirt I stuck my chewing gum to? Well now I
spilt ink on on it!”
(rolling her eyes) says: ‘Get some toothpaste and rub it on the
ink stains. Then let it completely dry and take it to the wash. If you
acted fast enough, you just may get a clean shirt back.’

“Granny! How can I stop my eyes from watering while I cut onions?”
says: ‘There are several ways. First you can cut the onions
under cool water, and suprisingly, chewing gum while cutting will
sometimes lower the need for tears.

Granny next to her: ‘Sorry but I’d like to add that you can also light
a candle near the cutting board, the fire burns the gases that cause
your eyes to water.

“Granny! Every time we clean the mirror, we leave obvious marks on it.
How to make it completely clean?”
says: ‘To clean the mirror so it will look new and shiny, clean
first with regular cleaning material to remove the dirt and dust
layers. Then mix a glass of vinegar with a quarter cup of water and
use some newspaper to gently clean the mirror. After that go over that
wet area with a fresh and dry newspaper. The mirror will look as new.

“Granny! I don’t have much time and I’m hungry, how can I boil potatos
faster?”
Says: ‘Peel one side of each potato before you boil them, and
they’ll be ready much faster.’

Granny next to her: ‘Sorry again, but I’d like to add a little tip –
to keep peeled potato in their fresh white color, soak them in cold
water and add a few drops of vinegar before putting in the fridge.
says: ‘Sorry and sorry again! Maybe enough butting in? They’re
asking me!

Granny next to her: ‘Sorry.’

“Granny! It takes too long to peel sweet potatos!”
says: ‘Boil them, and then immediately soak in cold water for a
few minutes. The peeling will be much easier.’

Message For The Day….Love All and Serve All !!!

The first step to love all and serve all is to expand love in your own homes. You must revere and please your parents who gave you this chance to live and learn. If you ill-treat them or inflict grief on their minds, how can you ever gladden others by service and understanding? You know that when a balloon is blown, it bursts and the air inside it merges with the vast limitless expanse outside. Similarly your love must fill your home, then the society you live, and finally burst open to spread in the Universe. A drop of water held in the palm is soon evaporated; but drop it into the sea and it survives as a part of the sea. It assumes the name and the taste, the majesty and might of the sea! Cultivate Love; sow the seeds of love in all hearts, everywhere around you. That is My Wish, My Mission!

Will Chennai Ever Learn ?

Under one govt it’s go, under another it’s stop

DEEPA H. RAMAKRISHNAN   in THE HINDU……

” Men May Come and Men May Go…But  I Go on Forever ! “…..Is it applicable only to the poem  THE BROOKS by LORD TENNYSON ?!!?….

Why should infrastructure development projects of a city or state suffer everytime a change of guard in the Govt ???…. just think over …

Why should infrastructure projects stop every time a government changes?

The Rs. 1,815 crore elevated expressway project from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal, started with much fanfare in September 2010, has been put on hold.

Hundreds of cement pillars standing alongside the meandering Cooum river have been silently awaiting a solution for the last seven months – yet another case of a delayed infrastructure project.

Who is to blame this time? Was it lack of proper planning? An unexpected hurdle?

This project had the support of both State and Central governments. The State agreed to contribute Rs. 470 crore in the form of land and relief and rehabilitation measures, the Central government, Rs. 500 crore and the Chennai Port, Rs. 235 crore. After an initial hurdle because of land acquisition, the project picked up pace and columns were built at various locations. In 2011 the government changed, and a year later, the project came to a grinding halt.

The reasons given were that the alignment was improper and pillars had encroached on the river bed obstructing the flow of water. What is strange is that it was the same set of officials of the Water Resources Department who cleared the project in the first place, who have now raised objections. How could a project that appeared all well and certified as acceptable by professionals a year ago, turn into something that is faulty?

Each passing day without any progress only increases the cost. The compensation to be paid by the National Highways Authority of India to the contractor under various heads rises. With 30 per cent of the project having been completed, and uncertainty still lingering, only public money seems to be wasted and the addition of infrastructure to the city is delayed.

This is not the only project the city is uncertain about. Chennai High Speed Circular Transportation Corridor that was to take off from Adyar and connect with Chennai Bypass has come to a complete halt. A detailed feasibility report was completed and a detailed project report was to have been prepared for the first phase.

Another proposal that has been grounded is the formation of bicycle tracks by the Chennai Corporation.  The Corporation had been considering bicycle tracks in Adyar and Besant Nagar, areas that have a high density of schools and many students who get there by bicycle. Initially, an 8 km stretch of arterial roads in Anna Nagar, which serves 14 schools, was to be covered for a pilot project. Design proposals were prepared and even publicised. Now there is no news about the project.

The question is, why should critical infrastructure projects that are essential to the city stop every time a government changes? The departments and officials who administer the projects in one government completely change face and position when another takes over, and bring out convoluted reasons against implementing or completing them. It is the city and people who bear the brunt and suffer from these whimsical changes and decisions.

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, despite changes in government, many projects continue. It appears public interest and careful use of common resource are a priority there.  Will Chennai ever learn?

Message For The Day….One”s True Worth !!!

When students score low marks parents feel great grief. Similarly, when we fall low in morals and spiritual virtues, our motherland bemoans her fate ten times more sadly. We have to assuage the grief of the physical mother and promote the peace and prosperity of our motherland. The motherland is not a mere lump of earth. When we desire her progress, we have to promote the progress of the people who dwell therein. The skills needed for resuscitating and reforming are found in youth. The reforming process involves the removal, in daily living, of bad conduct and bad habits, and the practice of good conduct and good deeds. You must express your humility, fortitude, equanimity, and gratitude for kindness received, in various acts in your daily life, every day.

One’s true worth can be measured by the efforts they take to reform themselves
