How to Accept Criticism with Grace and Appreciation !!!

Most people take criticism as a disheartening or demoralizing comment. They tend to react to it either by being defensive or lashing back. But there are positive ways of dealing with criticism which can work wonders for your career and help you lead a stress free life.

Here is a list of constructive ways for dealing with criticism in your respective life.

1. Hold Your Reactions and Control Your Anger:

Usually the first reaction of humans in response to criticism is anger or rage. It is advisable to hold your reaction and give it some time before riding the emotional way. Allow the sense of logic to sink in and guide you past the anger. By doing so, you would understand the true meaning and intention behind the criticism, and this will in turn help you to reach greater heights in personal and professional life.

2. Think Positive:

Seeing a positive in a negative situation can work wonders on your life. Hence it is always advisable to take in criticism as a constructive feedback and thank the critic for pointing out your mistake. Try to address the issues pointed out by the critic and avoid repeating the mistake for the betterment of your future.

3. Be a Better Person:

Do not consider criticism as personal attack and react violently. Consider it as a scrutiny of your action, not you as a person. This will help you to detach from criticism emotionally and helps you to see the positive side of it. Even if an individual behaves in an inhuman way, you don’t have to do the same and stoop to a low level. It is always advisable to maintain a high moral ground and try to become a better person.

4. Learn From Criticism:

Every criticism, irrespective of its true intention, gives you an opportunity to educate yourself. It allows you to look for errors in your action, correct them immediately and create a future course of action. Having a positive frame of mind allows you to sail through any situation and lead a better life.

5. Avoid Competitiveness:

You should avoid being competitive about criticism and refrain from being revengeful. The fact is that criticizing someone or something is not part of a competition and it is essential for an individual to uphold high moral values. You can humor the situation or be positively sarcastic about meaningless criticism. By doing so and displaying such immense maturity, you are bound to become a self-assured and confident individual.

Accepting criticism in a positive and graceful way is not an impossible task. All you need is a bit of effort and the right frame of mind.

Lenseman who Nailed Ajmal Kasab”s Fate ….

The TOI lensman who nailed Ajmal Kasab’s fate

Sebastian D’Souza, the photo editor of Mumbai Mirror, with the photograph that he took of Ajmal Kasab inside Victoria Terminus on the night of 26 November 2008

Now retired, Sebastian D’Douza, then photo editor of Mumbai Mirror, took 19 photographs on the night of 26 November 2008, including the iconic one of Ajmal Kasabstriding across the corridors of Bombay’s Victoria Terminus station, spraying bullets.

“Saby”, as the lensman is known to friends and colleagues, testified before the trial judge, M.L. Tahiliyani, who called his testimony “blemishless”.

In August this year, the Supreme Court noted:

“While dealing with the VT carnage, we must take note of two witnesses (Saby andShriram Vernekar). Their evidence is extraordinary in that they not only witnessed the incident but also made a visual record of the event by taking pictures of the two killers in action and their victims… Both the witnesses, caring little for their own safety and displaying exemplary professionalism, followed the killers,” said the SC.

After Kasab was hanged yesterday, The Times of India quotes Sebastian D’Souza as saying:

“While I can’t be happy over anybody’s death, Kasab’s hanging does put an end to this sordid chapter and may help the victims get some closure.”

***

Thomas Fuller profiled D’Souza for the International Herald Tribune:

When the gunfire started, Sebastian D’Souza was well placed to respond. From his office directly across the street, D’Souza, the photo editor of Mumbai Mirror, grabbed his Nikon and two lenses and headed out into the blood-soaked night.

Peering from behind pillars and running in and out of empty train cars, he emerged with the singular iconic image of the attacks: a clear shot of one of the gunmen.

“I was shaking, but I kept shooting,” D’Souza said as he scrolled through his pictures of the attacks in a recent interview at his office.

D’Souza’s photo of Muhammad Ajmal Kasab confidently striding through ChhatrapatiShivaji Terminus carrying an assault rife with one hand, finger extended toward the trigger, has been printed and reprinted in newspapers here and flashed daily on television screens.

Sebastian D’Souza recounted the story in The Times of India:

“In the distance we saw two dark figures carrying rucksacks but weren’t sure who they were.”

Saby asked the constable to fire. One of the two figures swung at the sound and fired back. Looking over the barrel of a government-issue rifle Saby took his first shot of the night. Seconds later, he saw the owner of the book stall at the platform slump down, writhing in pain.

This was Saby’s second shot before he saw Shashank Shinde’s lifeless body. “It was the first realisation I had that I was in a far more serious situation than anything I’d covered before.” He watched the gunmen pump two more bullets into the book stall owner to make sure he was dead.

He also saw, from his hiding place, an old woman in an orange navwari sari walk past, oblivious as a sleepwalker; the gunmen looking at her and then away for other targets.

“I was terrified for her but they just let her walk by. I wonder why.”

By now he was hiding in one of the empty train compartments where he fitted the telephoto lens onto his Nikon D-200, and then crouching out barely a few inches he shot a couple of frames of one of the terrorists. He was no more than a boy, hair cut likeShah Rukh Khan in his Baazigar days, dressed in neatly ironed gray cargos, black tee-shirt, and carrying a bag that seemed heavier than his weight.

In the other hand he carried a Kalashnikov which, Saby saw clearly through his lens now, was raised in his direction.

Message For The Day!!!!!!

Success follows those who follow the Truth

That is the law. If your motive in life is to seek material wealth alone, success will elude you. However, if you pursue the higher aspect, the Truth, in and through all your worldly activities such as your business, profession, politics, sport, knowledge or love, success will be your shadow. It is said Knock the door; it shall be opened unto you. That is, knock at the door of a higher purpose and everything else will open for you.

Prosperity is a by-product of your progress in the path of higher and nobler values. Modern generation may not realize this vital law of life. To them this may seem a paradox. They are tempted to violate this unrelenting law and take short cut due to the temptation towards the instant benefit.

Taking short cut may bring short term pleasure, but they pay long term penalty. Reflect over this law and realize the essence of true satisfaction.

Practising what he preaches

“We cannot sustain ourselves, unless we contribute to the society in someway or the other. I strongly feel if even one person does his bit towards social good, there will be some change.”

A will to serve combined with a sense of social justice has been the guiding principle of P. Kalyanasundaram, who has spent over 45 years in social service. A gold medallist in library science, he is also an MA in literature and history. During his 35-year-career as a librarian at the Kumarkurupara Arts College at Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin district, he gave away all his salary for charity and did odd jobs to meet his daily needs. He has also come forward to donate his body and eyes to the Tirunelveli Medical College.

The Union Government has acclaimed him as `The Best Librarian in India’. He has also been chosen as `one of the top ten librarians of the world’. The International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, has honoured him as `one of the noblest of the world’, while the United Nations Organisation adjudged him as one of the Outstanding People of the 20th Century’. An American organisation has also selected him as the `Man of the Millennium.’

Mr. Kalyanasundaram, who has founded a social welfare organisation, `Paalam’, shares his experiences in a chat with Prathiba Parameswaran.

SIMPLICITY IN life and exemplariness in practice has been the hallmark of Mr. Kalyanasundaram. Born in August 1953 at Melakarivelamkulam in Tirunelveli district, he lost his father at a very young age. It was his mother, who inspired him to serve the poor.

When he was at college, the Indo-China war broke out, and he contributed his gold chain to the then Chief Minister, Kamaraj, for the war fund. At this time around, he went to meet Balasubramanian, Editor, Ananda Vikatan. “He sent me away, saying he would write about me the day I donated something I had earned myself. I did not speak a word to anyone about what I had done. I took it as a challenge,” Mr. Kalyanasundaram recalls. Ever since he got a job as a librarian in Tuticorin, he has contributed all his salary, pension benefits and ancestral property to social welfare. It was not until 1990, when he received his pension arrears and contributed it to the Collector’s Fund, that the then Tiruneveli Collector felicitated him, despite his protests. The `Paalam’ serves as a bridge between donors and beneficiaries: it collects money and materials from those willing to donate and distribute them among the weaker sections. It has also contributed to the cyclone relief funds in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, and has helped the earthquake victims in Maharashtra and Gujarat. “We cannot sustain ourselves, unless we contribute towards the society in someway or the other. I strongly feel if even one person does his bit towards social good, there will be some change,” he asserts.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram feels that one must achieve something in his chosen field. His contribution to library science is immense. A thesis he submitted as part of his post-graduate course to the Madurai Kamaraj University fetched him distinction. He has also hit upon an easy way of tracing and accessing books in libraries.

His ability to strike a rapport even with youngsters is remarkable. He cites the instance when he started wearing khadi. At college, he was required to take classes on Gandhianism. “I had to speak about simplicity and everything Gandhi stood for, but I was clad in expensive clothes. That was when I decided to switch over to khadi,” he relates. Since then he had always practised what he stood for, making himself a role model for many youths.

He was popular among college and school students, and many of them have joined his organisation.

He has long-term plans for his organisation. One is the setting up of a nationalised digital library with modern equipment, which could be accessed by people from all walks of life.

He also wants to set up an international children’s university in Tamil Nadu, with foreign aid. However, he says, a mission has a meaning only when the right people are involved in it. The Directorate of Public Libraries should recruit people with a library science background to be librarians, he says. “And good librarians should have a broad knowledge of everything.”

A STORY OF PERSEVERENCE , DEDICATION AND AMBITION….

SOURCE::::: UNKNOWN,…

‘Finger Licking’ ….a Good Story…

This Story is Special because it’s an Example
of how Perseverance, Dedication, and Ambition
along with Hard Work ,with a bit of Luck, can
Create Success; regardless of Ones Age.

    “Young Colonel Sanders”
When Colonel Harland Sanders retired at the age
of sixty-five, he had little to show for himself,
except an old Caddie Roadster, a Hundred and
five Dollars Monthly Pension Check and a
Recipe for Chicken.
Knowing he couldn’t Live on his Pension, he took
his Chicken Recipe in Hand, got behind the Wheel
of his Van and set out to make his Fortune.
His First Plan was to Sell his Chicken Recipe to
Restaurant Owners, who would in turn give him
a Residual for every Piece of Chicken they Sold-
Five Cents per Chicken. The First Restaurateur
he called on turned him down.
So did the Second.
So did the Third.
In fact, the First One Thousand and Eight Sales Calls
Colonel Sanders made ended in Rejection. Still, he
continued to Call on Owners as he travelled across
the U.S.A., Sleeping in his Van to save Money.
Prospect Number One Thousand and Nine gave him
his first “Yes.”
After Two Years of making Daily Sales, he had Signed
up a total of Five Restaurants. Still the Colonel pressed
on, knowing that he had a great Chicken Recipe and
that Someday the Idea would Catch on.
Naturally, you may know how the Story Ends. The idea
did Catch on. By 1963, the Colonel had Six Hundred
Restaurants across the Country selling his Secret
Recipe of Kentucky Fried Chicken
(with Eleven Herbs and Spices).
In 1964, he was bought out by the future Kentucky
Governor, John Brown. Even though the sale made
him a Multi-Millionaire, he continued to represent
and Promote Kentucky Fried Chicken until his death
in 1990.

Colonel Sanders’ Story teaches an Important Lesson –
it’s never Too Late to Decide to never Give Up. Earlier
in his Life, the Colonel was Involved in other Business
Ventures but they weren’t Successful. He had a Gas
Station in the Thirties, a Restaurant in the Forties
and he gave up on both of them.
However, at the age of sixty-five, Harland Sanders
decided his Chicken Idea was the Right Idea and
he refused to give up, even in spite of repeated
Rejections.
He knew that if he kept on Knocking on Doors,
Eventually someone would say “YES.”
KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) is now a Global
Chain of Fried Chicken Fast Food Restaurants…
with Millions of Ardent Fans for Finger Licking
Good Chicken Recipes…Worldwide.. :)

MYSTERY OF MISSING THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!

SOURCE::::ARTICLE BY DEEPALAKSHMI IN “THE HINDU”…NICE ONE TO READ ….IT IS HAPPENING IN ALL OUR HOMES….

NATARAJAN
Some mysteries can never be solved. Well, I am not talking of murder or burglary mysteries but the mystery of things disappearing from their place in our own homes. We spend half of our lives searching for things and wondering how we lost them.

I am sure we all have experienced this situation. We are on the phone and the person at the other end gives us a very important number, address to be noted down…. and No! the pen is not in the pen stand. We run around desperately hunting for it in every nook and corner and finally manage to get one, which, however, won’t write. Where on earth did the ink go? We wonder where all the other pens in the house have suddenly disappeared. Till date, I have not been able to find out how this happens, but I have understood why in offices/banks pens are tied to strings.

The next in this list of missing items is a tiny thing. After arranging all important papers for nearly an hour, you reach out for the stapler only to discover that there isn’t a single pin in it but the fact is you loaded it just a week ago. How and where did all the pins go? The answer that echoes in the house, “How do I know?”

I am sure most of us often misplace our most valuable possession — CELLPHONE in our own house, but thanks to the landline or another phone (mostly the neighbour’s), we can call up the missing cellphone to track its location. I once found my lost mobile ringing in my wardrobe. Now just imagine if it had been in the silent mode! Most of us confidently declare the location where we kept it last, so now the million-dollar question is: how did the cellphone travel from one place to another?

It is understandable if needles, safety pins, toothpicks and other tiny objects go missing, but a dozen times in a week we have all hunted for the remote controls of TV sets, ACs and DVD players. When electricity resumes after power cut, TV automatically switches on with a blaring sound and all the family members run hither and thither looking for the remote control but in vain and finally locate the volume control in the TV set itself. What a chaos! When questioned about the missing remote control, the family members answer in unison, “I never saw it,”….. and the mystery continues.

We all have a key stand, but unfortunately keys are hardly hung on it. Cycle keys, motorcycle keys, car keys and house keys suddenly disappear when we are already late for work and we go berserk hunting for them and find them later, and resolve to hang them henceforth on the key stand but never do so. This happens frequently in almost all homes: just when the van driver, school bus driver honks, the parents and children are frantically searching for the name badges, compass boxes and many a time the matching pair of the socks to be worn. Who should be blamed for this, the mother, the maid or the child herself/himself?

I can never forget how once my father made us all run around turning the entire house topsy-turvy hunting for his spectacles and an hour later we all realised that the spectacles were safely resting on his forehead.

Whenever I open the refrigerator to drink water, I find only empty one-litre water bottles with only 10 ml water in it. The mystery is how the bottles I have filled never quench my thirst! Annoyed at my failure to solve this mystery, I decided one day to fill a stainless steel vessel with water exclusively for myself and hid it inside the refrigerator. Two hours later, feeling very proud of my idea, I opened the fridge only to find that not just the water but the vessel itself was missing!

Well, not only water, our favourite snacks also disappear from containers hidden in the innermost shelf of the kitchen and the culprit, I am sure, has not been found till date. When the family members are questioned the most common reply is, “I DON’T KNOW.”

Let us accept the fact that no ghost or animal is responsible for such situations. In fact, in most of the cases, it is our own carelessness, absent-mindedness, even laziness and sometimes that of the others that creates such circumstances.

I wish to conclude by quoting the famous lines, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” Let us follow this principle and save not only our precious time but of the others too and not waste it in searching for things as a hundred constructive jobs can be done in the time lost in searching.

Not in a literal sense, but we dont consider saying Nandri as polite and fashionable anymore… sayingThanks is considered more fashionable. Can we all start saying Nandri to start with…of all the people i shouldnt be saying this!!!!!… but I think we should start using simple Tamil words in our day to day life

This is what i have felt we should try and do
In the malls – speak to the staff in Tamil
Speak to relatives in Tamil not in English
Say Vanakkam and Nandri where and when possible
