American Innovation Award for Indian-American….

ranga

Washington: A renowned Indian-American inventor at IBM, Rangaswamy Srinivasan, has been nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama for the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

Along with Srinivasan, President Obama named 12 eminent researchers as recipients of the National Medal of Science and 10 extraordinary inventors for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honours bestowed by the U.S. government upon scientists, engineers, and inventors.

The recipients will receive their awards at a White House ceremony in early 2013.

In 1981, Srinivasan discovered that an ultraviolet excimer laser could etch living tissues in a precise manner with no thermal damage to the surrounding area. He named the phenomenon Ablative Photo Decomposition (APD). According to his profile on the Hall of Fame website, Srinivasan and his co-inventors ran tests using the excimer laser and a conventional, green laser to etch organic matter. They discovered that while the green laser produced rough incisions, damaged by charring from the heat, the excimer laser produced clean, neat incisions.

In 1983, he collaborated with an ophthalmic surgeon to develop APD to etch the cornea. It resulted in a procedure to correct vision known today as Lasik surgery. Since the introduction of Lasik, millions of people have taken advantage of this procedure that reduces dependency on corrective lenses.

Inducted into the U.S. “Inventor Hall of Fame” in 2002, Srinivasan has spent 30 years at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center. He has 21 U.S. patents under his name and received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in science from the University of Madras, in 1949 and 1950. He earned doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of southern California in 1956.

“I am proud to honour these inspiring American innovators,” President Obama said, adding: “They represent the ingenuity and imagination that has long made this nation great, and they remind us of the enormous impact a few good ideas can have when these creative qualities are unleashed in an entrepreneurial environment.”

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was created by statute in 1980 and is administered for the White House by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Patent and Trademark Office. The award recognises those who have made lasting contributions to America’s competitiveness and quality of life and helped strengthen the nation’s technological workforce.

The National Medal of Science was created in 1959 and is administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation.

Richard Branson to Serve as Stewardess of Air Asia !!!!!

British billionaire Richard Branson will finally wear a red skirt and serve as a stewardess on Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia in May after losing a Grand Prix bet with the founder of the airline.

Virgin boss Branson and AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes had agreed in 2010 that whichever of their teams (then Virgin and Lotus) finished lower in the constructors’ championship in their debut season, the losing owner would serve on the other’s airline.

Branson lost as Lotus finished 10th and Virgin 12th, but the trip was postponed in early 2011 after he injured himself while skiing.

Fernandes said Branson had contacted him to honour his bet.

‘He will be an Airasia stewardess in May on Airasia. 2 years late but main point he hasn’t forgotten,’ Fernandes tweeted.

Fernandes had previously said that Branson would strut down the aisle to offer coffee, tea or other food and beverages to guests on a special 13-hour Kuala Lumpur to London flight.

The tickets for the flight would be auctioned off for charity.

There are people who contribute to the society greatly but are seldom known. They quietly do their bit without expecting anything in return. These extraordinary and selfless people bring meaning to hundreds of lives. Here are the unsung heroes of the nation, as listed by Tenzin Yangdon for Yahoo news.

Irom Sharmila:
Irom Sharmila is also known as the “Iron Lady of Manipur”. She is a civil rights activist and a political activist. Sharmila is an example of a woman’s perseverance. Since 2 November 2000, she has been on a hunger strike to demand that the Indian government abolish the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which is a cause for violence in Manipur and other parts of northeast. Not having eaten food or water for more than 500 weeks, she has been called “the world’s longest hunger striker”. She is on a continuous hunger strike for past 12 years. He is an example of an honest, dedicated IAS officer. He chose the life of an IAS officer instead of a comfortable life that usually accompanies an IIT graduate. In his 21 years in service, Khemka was transferred an enormous 43 times.

In 2008, Robert Vadra had purchased a 3.5 acre plot for Rs 7.5 crore, which he then sold to realty major DLF for Rs 58 crore. On October 8, Khemka questioned this relationship between Vadra and DLF and sought a list of Vadra’s land deals. But, instead of the list he got a transfer order.

Akhil Gogoi:
Akhil is a peasant leader and an RTI activist from Assam.  Akhil came to national attention after he was awarded the Shanmugam Manjunath Integrity Award in 2008 for his persistent fight against corruption and attempts to bring transparency in the government. He was awarded the national Right to Information (RTI) Award by Public Cause Research Foundation in 2010 for his role in exposing the 1.25 crore scam in Sampoorna Gram Rozgar Yojna (SGRY) and Rs 60 lakh scam in the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) in Golaghat district of Assam by using the RTI Act. Akhil donated the entire sum of  2lakhs of the Award to his organization KMSS.

He began teaching at the age of nine, mostly as a game, and then decided to continue teaching other children. The school continues to be run as an outdoor school and has ten teachers including Babar Ali himself. All of them are students at schools or colleges and volunteer to teach at the school. There are 800 children learning at the school and education there is completely free for the poor. In 2009, Babar won a prize for his work from the programme Real Heroes Award of the Indian English news channel CNN-IBN.

Jyotsna Sitling:

With more than 25 years in the IFS, she has cleaned, planted and restored the environment. She is well-known for restoring The Valley of Flowers National Park. The hills of the Nanda Devi Biospherehad turned into a heap of plastic littered by pilgrims and Jyotsana took it upon herself to clean the entire region involving the locals. The area was later declared as a World Heritage Site in 2005 by UNESCO.

Kulandei Francis:
Another unsung hero on the list is Kulandei Francis. He is an activist, social worker and the founder of the NGO Integrated Village Development Project in Tamil Nadu. Francis has been working diligently to improve the living conditions in rural India. His organization began small with a night school and a first-aid centre in Krishnagiri. Over the years, IVDP has established over 8,200 self-help groups and has empowered over 100,000 women, giving families a stable livelihood. The 60-year-old had no worries to earn a living doing tedious jobs. He is the Founder of ‘Paalam’ an NGO that he set up. The organization acts as a connection between those who wish to donate and those who need the donations.

Anand Kumar:
It isn’t an easy job to clear an IIT entrance exam. But the Ramanujan School of Mathematics in Bihar changed this notion. This year 27 made it to the IITs of the 30 students trained there. The coaching centre only teaches students from the lower income families. Students have to pass a competitive test to find a place in Super 30. The selected students devote an entire year to study and students receive food and accommodation for this duration. The institute does not accept any donation from anyone and is run chiefly by the fees collected from students who can afford to pay.
Anand Kumar, a mathematician started the coaching centre as he knew how hard it was to get good education if you are poor. Kumar gained admission at the Cambridge University but had to give up the dream of studying due to his poor financial state.

Chhavi Rajawat:
Chhavi Rajawat makes it to the list as well. This young MBA degree holder chose to work with rural India and at 32 she is the youngest woman sarpanch of her village Soda, near Jaipur. Her aim is to make her village 100 percent educated. Chhavi also works at her family home-turned-hotel called Kailrugji and has also set up a horse-riding academy in Jaipur.

P Narayanan Krishnan:
Madurai-based Narayanan Krishnanstarted the Akshaya Trust, an NGO in 2002. The trust has been a blessing for many homeless, ailing and hungry people.  In the first year of commencement, Krishnan used his own savings to feed around 30 people. Ever since, he’s cooked and served meals to around two million people. Presently, a shelter home is being built to home those in need of shelter. Realizing that there were many Indians living overseas who wanted to contribute to the cause, Krishnan founded Akshaya USA in 2012. The foundation supports the homeless, mentally ill, elderly and the disabled.

Nikesh Arora…Google”s Fourth Pillar !!!!

The internet has ingrained into our day to day life. There are currently over 1.5 billion internet users, which means, if considered as a country, the “online community” would have been most populous in the world. The amount of information that gets stored online in a year exceeds 50 times what was created in entire human history. Yet, Nikesh Arora says “you have seen nothing yet”, in an interview with Shyamal Majumdar of Business Standard, on the way exploring the Google’s Business Boss’ thoughts on online world’s migrants and natives and how advertisers are missing the bus.

Arora, the fourth most important executive at Google, after founders Sergey Brin, LarryPage and Chairman Eric Schmidt, says that online world is moving fast from migrants to natives, making net connectivity a “must-have” from “nice-to-have” just five years ago. “People like you and I are migrants in this online country. But people of my daughter’s generation are natives because they haven’t seen a world without Googleor Facebook,” he said.

So this transition of being a native in theonline country will eventually see most of the things that we know to become extinct, and his list of things includes entire media business in its current form like television advertising, which is destined to move into interactive networks.

Also, books will be dead and become just collectors’ items; Arora says “I can see this happening with my daughter who is in the ninth standard. Earlier, her books used to come in a big box. This year, she has been given an iPad. The books come loaded with it; she does her homework and submits it online, and her teacher uses cloud to access it.” He asks, “Can you imagine kids of her generation ever carrying books when they join college?”

Being a chief salesman at Google, which clocked revenue of $38 billion in 2011, he says, the challenge is how this transition, of migrants to natives, can be managed because that will impact the search giant’s revenue flow. Close to 96 per cent of Google’s revenue comes from advertisements.

Arora faced 399 rejections before getting a job at Fidelity Investments. “I thought life would be easy after doing my Masters from Boston and an MBA from Northeastern University. But here I was in an alien country — married but without a job, and living off the $3,000 that my father had sent me,” he said.

On reflecting about the time he joinedGoogle, Arora said that he was planning to do something on his own when a friend asked him in 2004 to consider joining a company that could offer a start-up kind of an atmosphere. The two Google founders conducted the interview among the artifacts of the British Museum; he says “We walked around. We looked at the exhibits and a lot of our conversation was about the Rosetta stone,” referring to an Egyptian artifact that dates to 196 BC and is inscribed in three languages.

Majumdar writes that one of Arora’s key contributions at Google has been driving revenues from other regions and building relations with advertisers. Presently more than half the company’s revenue comes from outside of the U.S. compared to just one-third when he joined eight years ago. It’s thus obvious why Google made a rare move last month, and decided to pay its top salesman $8 million in cash, instead of the previously agreed upon stock options and stock units. Arora, who made more than $23 million last year, will have to repay Google if he chooses to leave his position before April 25, 2015, the date the stock units and options will have vested.

Majumdar writes, whilst Arora at the age of 45 already been a top player at Google, and won’t he remain the tallest pygmy in a company where the founders are much younger than him? Before winding up his worthwhile conversation, he asks Arora, what’s next? To which Arora says, “Does things to undo the pattern every time his life takes on a steady pattern”. But he still loves going to office every day in a company that loves disrupting conventions, and where his colleagues are always excited about solving the most complicated of technological problems, Majumdar adds.

Not Just an Entrepreneur!!!!….Meet Mr.K.V.Ramani …..

K.V. Ramani, the co founder of nasscom, that represents and sets the tone for public policy for the Indian software industry is also a successful entrepreneur who founded Chennai-based Future Software and co-founded Hughes Software in Delhi. This man is just not an entrepreneur who runs behind money but he is also a well known philanthropist. His philanthropic activities can inspire many entrepreneurs to follow this path; reports rediff.com.

Ramani was recently in news for one such activity where he built and donated Sai Ashram for Rs 110 crore and handed it over to Sri Saibaba Sansthan. This Ashram will formally be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on November 16. Apart from this, Ramani also extends his services by donating 80 percent of his total earnings to the Shirdi Sai Trust.

Being a devotee of Shiridi Sai Baba
Ramani became a diehard devotee of Shiridi Sai Baba 35 years ago, when he was 27 year old. He was never a spiritual person and nor was he a devotee of Sai Baba.
Once one of his dearest family memberfell sick and it was a disease that doctors could not diagnose and cure. He and his family were shattered, that was when they were asked to worship Shiridi Sai Baba and Ramani was asked to visit the temple in Mylapore. He decided to visit the temple every Thursday since then but he did not have to wait as the miracle happened the same night when the sick person started showing signs of recovery. The next day when the doctors arrived to check the status of that person they were surprised as he was completely cured.
Donating income and being spiritual
“I was not spiritual then; a young unmarried man of 27. Now, I am 62. There was no rationale working then. When my prayers were answered, I decided to fulfill the promise. For me, it was like visiting a temple after writing an exam well,” says Ramani.
He completely accepts the fact that he has turned spiritual and only after being a devotee of Shiridi Sai that he was able to differentiate between religion and spirituality. He always wanted to visit the Shiridi temple but was not able to do so though he planned many trips with Dewang Mehta (of Nasscom) but could not make it happens not when you planned but when Baba wants. After starting the Sai Ashram project he has been regularly visiting the temple to be blessed and to be rejuvenated.
Taking the philanthropic path
Ramani started his philanthropic venture in his house in Chennai in 1996 where he set aside a certain sum of money for building Sai temples, to help the poor in education, food and healthcare and also for Sai Prachaar. He also says that he does not accept or take money as donation and completely does it from his own money.
He says, “Baba, you gave me too much money, I don’t need this much”. After selling two of his companies in 2004, which benefited the company, employees and himself, he decided to keep just 20 percent of it and to give away the 80 percent of it to Sai Baba.
As spoken to rediff he says, “I gave Rs 110 crore now. If you add what I have given all these years, it is much more than that. What we are spending every year is from the interest I get from the corpus I have invested. This Rs 110 crore comes from the interest of the corpus of the last 5-6 years.”
Reason to donate 110 crores
Ramani did not have any plans to build anything rather than just using the funds for some good purpose. When he spoke to the PRO of Shirdi Sansthan, he realized that the major problem that the ashram faced was accommodation.
Elderly people sat on the roads and women fed their babies in the open as they could not get a roof under their head. After taking a closer look at the statistics he found out that 30-40,000 devotees came to Shirdi every day. During weekends, it was a lakh and during festival times, it was 3-4 lakhs and the accommodation available with the Sansthan was less than 10,000. It was after hearing and seeing all this he decided to take up the project.
He also clearly says that it would be completely owned, maintained and managed by the Sansthan, and nobody has rights over it after handing over the keys.
“What I do for the Shirdi Sai Trust is not materialistic; it is spiritual”. He also says, “The entrepreneur in me creates institutions which can provide employment, which can create and showcase technological products to the world. We didn’t build a services company; we built a technology product company. We focused primarily on the telecom sector and had branches in the UK, Germany, in the US, Japan, Korea and China.”

Think-Tank Leader of of MS Windows Server 2012…An Indian…

Meet the Indian behind Microsoft’s $15 Billion Enterprise Business

As the whole world contemplates on the introduction of Windows 8 desktop OS, Microsoft has taken another gigantic step with its release of Windows Server 2012, today. Microsoft acknowledges this OS to be the biggest player in the core enterprise market in upcoming years.

So who is the think-tank leading this enormous project? It is an Indian who has been the pillar behind the launch of Windows Server 2012- Satya Nadella. Nadella is the current president of Servers and Tools Business (STB) at Microsoft and the master mind behind Server 2012. “This is perhaps the biggest release of our server products in history, bigger than NT,” he said at the launch event. “I was here at Microsoft when we launched Windows NT, which ushered in the era of client/server, and we believe that Windows Server 2012 ushers in the era of the cloud operating system.”

In an interview given to SiliconIndia for its March ‘03 issue, Nadella, who was then the corporate Vice President for Microsoft Business Solutions expressed his vision about the Microsoft CRM on which he was working and its implications on the enterprise server and the third-party server. During his interview, he mentioned, “The person would most probably be using MS Outlook, he or she wouldn’t even know that the underlying software is a CRM tool. But the person can now do a lot more with his email—generate and complete an entire order, and rack up the tally on the corporate inventory. The CRM would be working on the enterprise server or on some third-party server.” The cover story shed light on the immense potential and foresightedness of this Indian pro and his visionary that is currently evident from the 19 years that he has contributed to Microsoft and the world of technology.

Nadella grew up in Hyderabad- India, where he did his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Mangalore University, followed by a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin. The master’s degree was truly the turning point of his life. In 1992, Nadella joined Microsoft, which he proudly admits, ‘the path to his new life.’ Nadella came to Microsoft from Sun Microsystems, where he was a member of their technology staff.

According to Microsoft, Nadella is the architect for the overall business and technical vision, strategy, operations and engineering and marketing that made over $15 billion via businesses. The Server and Tool Business platform nurtures Microsoft’s infrastructural managerial services and cloud platform that cover up some of the ground breaking products like Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, System Center and the Windows Azure Platform- Microsoft’s pinnacle in cloud technology.

The perseverance and determination of this Indian didn’t wind up, as he continued his studies, including a successful MBA degree from the University of Chicago. At Microsoft, Nadella spend several years leading engineering efforts in Microsoft’s Server group. This was followed by his promotion to the Online Services Division of Microsoft. Along with that, he also led Microsoft Business Solutions (MBS), which develops and markets the Microsoft Dynamics line of ERP and CRM products.

At the OSD, Nadella was appointed as the senior vice president of R&D. Microsoftcredit Nadella as the lone architect for its most-successful search engine- Bing, online portal MSN and other advertising platforms. It’s pretty clear that the technical visionary of Nadella haNadella- At Present

In February 2011, Microsoft was subjected to a major shake-up and that bought this Indian to one of the most coveted managerial positions in the company. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself appointed Nadella as the president of the Server and Tools Business.

Ballmer praises Nadella’s work at OSB: “He led the overall R&D efforts for some of the largest online services and drove the technical vision and strategy for several important milestones, including the critical launch of Bing, new releases of MSN, Yahoo integration across Bing and adCenter, and much more.”

“Satya is also well-known for his leadership. He has strong collaboration skills, is decisive in both decision-making and delegating and has strong customer insights, engineering and business expertise. He also knows how to structure organizations for outstanding performance,” he continued. From that time on, tech giant, Microsoft had no time to look back, as they dusted all other enterprise companies with their ever-grossing products.

Nadella clearly signifies that praises and admiration is not what overlays the pavement to success. The below mentioned fact proves the validity of the statement.

According to reports, Microsoft’s Server and Tools business is bigger than its desktop Windows business. This is prior the growth rate of the S&T department that hit $18.7 billion when compared to $18.4 billion from Windows.

Nadella currently resides with his wife and three children in the state of Washington.
