Message For the Day… Be Grateful To GOD…

How to develop Gratitude?

If you look around the world, you will realize that the design of nature is so perfect. Everything functions meticulously in your favour and yet, you complain when you lack minor things. This craving for what you do not have is ingratitude.

Think about the number of years you have been arrogating various provisions. If you were to pay for these provisions, it would add upto several digits. The law of gravity is maintained perfectly. The Ozone layer in the ionosphere is designed to prevent ultraviolet rays. Oxygen is heavier than all other gases so it remains on the ground for us to breathe, and all other poisonous gases rise into the atmosphere. Who is responsible for this? There seems to be an unseen benefactor. You need to be grateful to the unseen provider!

Further, imagine if you were to set up a family on the moon, do you realize the number of things you would have to take care of like water, the atmospheric condition, and millions of other designs of nature?

We take many things for granted because they are already taken care of, and yet, we are ungrateful for all the provisions.

If you examine your life within you, you find so many things that can go wrong, but they are maintained ingeniously. Therefore, when your mind desires something that you do not have, count the blessings and focus on those things that you already have.

You have to be aware of your provisions and your provider. Thereafter, you develop an attitude of gratitude. Devotion to GOD is essence in this attitude of gratitude. Marcus Aurelius recommended the technique to Think of what you have rather than what you lack. Of the things you have, select the best and then reflect how eagerly you would have sought them, if you did not have them

Always learn to enjoy the GOD Gifted short life, before we realize that it was too late!

On Diwali Day Think of Young Kids of Sivakasi who Swelter in the Heat to Make Your Diwali Sparkle!!!!

Diwali: Spare a thought for children of Sivakasi

source:::::: Article by Sriram Balasubramaniam in IBN lIVE Blog…

Natarajan

One of the first things that we would be looking in a yearly calendar is the day Diwali would be celebrated. The Indians living in India would be itching to celebrate while the Indians living abroad would make sure their Indian holiday plans are in sync with Diwali time. Joy derived from triumph of good over evil is the hallmark of Diwali. However, there are certain sections of people who need to be remembered, the same people who are the catalyst for making your Diwali as colourful as you want to be.

Every year, 90 per cent of the crackers for Diwali are made from a small place called Sivakasi in South India. This is the capital of the fireworks industry in India and one of the leading centers across the world. After Lui Yang, the Chinese city which is leader in the world production of crackers, Sivakasi is the next hub for global fireworks industries. This is something that we should be proud about, however, this empire has been built on a model of extreme low wages and high casualty rates. According to the Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TNFAMA), 237 lives have been lost over the last 12 years in fireworks manufacturing plants. In September this year, 39 people lost their lives in a fire at Om Shakti Fireworks in Sivakasi due to lack of adherence to safety norms and regulations in the town. The flouting of safety norms is a norm rather than an aberration in the fireworks industry especially amidst the unorganized and small companies operating across the sector. Even though there has been widespread condemnation by civil society over the state of affairs in Sivakasi, year after year you see a similar situation unfolding. While accidents could happen in any city which produces firecrackers, it rarely happens with the sheer consistency and magnitude of Sivakasi in recent times. Besides the issue of safety, the issue of child labour has plagued the industry for long.

Lets come to terms with this fact; most of the crackers that you are bursting today have had involvement of child labour at some level or the other. Though this is alarming, it is not surprising considering the magnitude of child labour in the fireworks industry across the country. Child labour is regrettably rampant as much in many other industries but the exploitation of children to make crackers that are dangerous is simply unacceptable. According to a UN study published in the mid 1990’s there were 30,000 people employed in the match industry and 3,000 people employed in the fireworks industry in Sivakasi; all in between the age of 6-14. Some estimates suggest that the daily wage for these workers is less than 150 Rupees a day; an abysmal reality that makes it almost on par with the minimum wage for workers in the fireworks industry which has been set at Rs 99.98 per day. Besides the economics, the question is why should the children be doing what they are doing? Shouldn’t they be taken care of by the society and the state? What happened to the self acclaimed goal of education to all? All of these questions point to a greater role needed to be played by both the state and the society at large.

There has to be a systematic response from the government in terms of legislation that tightens the safety norms and action on the ground with more investment in safety monitoring systems. A report from the BBC states that Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) had just 4 officers overseeing over 1,000 companies and factories in Sivakasi over the last year. Is this good enough? There has to be an increase in manpower in monitoring mechanisms and enhanced law and order which cracks down vehemently on the firecracker owners who are flouting rules. Though there have been raids on companies flouting the law, the issue requires more investment and action. Legislation such as the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986 could be revamped to discourage children from working in family owned businesses etc. In addition, there has to be a sustained effort to educate the public, especially the people in the rural areas, on the impact of this on the children’s future in the years to come.

Society needs to stand up and address these concerns. I am not suggesting we boycott crackers but why not contribute to the upliftment of communities in the Sivakasi belt in the form of public private partnership? Why not work on evolving the best practices that the world’s leading fireworks manufacturing city Lui Yang has? Why not try and provide education tools to these young kids who are sweltering in the heat with their lives on the line? Why not just think about all that we could do to mobilize non governmental resources for this cause? Why not start thinking about all this during an auspicious day such as Diwali?

As you celebrate this Diwali, spare a thought for the people of Sivakasi; after all, they are the ones who make your Diwali sparkle

Wish you a very Happy Diwali!!

China”s Mega Eco-City….A Car-Free City!!!!!!

China Is Building A Huge Eco-City Where No One Will Need To Drive

great city china car-free urban

Outside Chengdu, in central China, a 78 million square foot site has been determined for an unconventional sort of construction project. It will be a city built from scratch, for 80,000 people, none of whom will need a car to get around.

It will be built on the fringes of Chengdu, a city of 17 million people.

The master plan calls for a dense city surrounded by farmland. The team is also considering vertical farming in buildings.

Tall buildings will provide room for 80,000 residents.

A system of electric shuttles will make cars unnecessary.

The architects want to create a city with a vibrant street life.    There will be lots of parkland, open space, and places to gather. The focus will be on walking, not driving. A network of pedestrian trails will allow access to trails that run through the farmland and forest around the city. Residents will have the choice of owning a car, but the hope is that they will not need it to move about the city center.  Buildings will be placed to maximize the generation of power from wind.

The “Great City” is a plan for an ambitious urban center designed to limit its residents environmental impact by producing clean energy, reducing waste, and promoting public transportation over individual car use.

The project is the work of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, who note that “Chinese planning officials [are] beginning to see the effects of automobile-dependent design and are open to better alternatives to urban sprawl.”

It has been called the “Car-Free City,” a moniker that is not entirely accurate. The architecture firm notes that the vision is for a city where “cars will be essentially unnecessary,” but allowed.

The master plan includes many good ideas. Half the road space will be reserved for non-motorized traffic, and electric shuttles will get people where they cannot or do not want to walk. All homes will be within a two-minute walk of a public park.

An “eco-park” will treat wastewater and solid waste, and generate power. Land outside the city will be reserved for farming. Wildlife habitat will be protected. Buildings have been designed to maximize the use of wind power; the planners decided Chengdu’s hazy climate is not conducive to solar power.

All told, Smith and Gill expect to cut energy use by 48 percent, water use by 58 percent, and produce 89 percent less waste, compared to a conventional development with a similar population.

Going beyond environmental impact, Smith and Gill designed Great City to provide residents with affordable housing, education, and medical care, all clustered in the city center to encourage a thriving civic life.

It’s a lovely vision for anyone concerned by climate change and social inequity, and the effectiveness of the power, transportation, and recycling systems will be judged once in place. But the project as a whole raises some questions.

Can a city built so quickly stand the test of time? What happens to the architects’ scheme if residents don’t behave as expected? And even if this eco-city works as planned, what can China do to translate this program to the hundreds of millions of people living in older cities?

Still, considering the rate at which China is urbanizing, a proven plan for minimizing the environmental impact of new cities would be worth a lot.

பறவை வேண்டும் …பட்டாசு வேண்டாம் !!!!!!

பறவைகளுக்காக பட்டாசு வெடிக்காத கிராமம்- எல்.முருகராஜ்    …தின மலர் ….

Natarajan

An evening at Marina Beach in Madras, visitors enjoying the waves and cool breeze, not distracted by a shipping vessel ran aground

Many ships have run aground along the Chennai Coast during previous cyclones. Some have even split into two.

But a spectacle that remains etched in the collective memory of the city is the sight of the half-submerged Stematis, a cargo ship flying the Liberian flag, which hit the shores of Marina beach on Nov 3, 1966, and remained as wreckage till the 1990s.

For long, the ruined Stematis was a major attraction. Large number of visitors flocked the beach to see the odd sight of a partially-submerged ship. The more adventurous, after paying the fee of a rupee, sailed the short distance for a closer view.

A cyclonic storm, expected to cross the coast of Nagapattinam, moved north and hit the shores of Madras on the evening of November 3, 1966. Winds blowing at a speed of 100 kmph damaged at least six ships.

The worst affected was the Panamanian cargo ship Progress. The ship split in two after hitting a rock north of the harbour and about 26 crewmembers, mostly Chinese, died.

Two ships, Stematis and Mari Hora, flying Liberian flags jostled violently and drifted. WhileMari Hora ran aground off the Port Trust marshalling yard, Stematis was dragged further and reached the shores of Marina beach. The Madras Steamers Agents’ Association, after a few days, declared that Mari Hora was “as good as wrecked as it had developed a big crack amidship,” but they had some hopes about refloating Stematis.

Ten days later, attempts to pull the ship out of the sand commenced. Large crowds had gathered to witness the event, but they were disappointed since the recovery operations failed.

M/s. Diana Maritime Corporation, the owners, agreed to sell what was remaining of the ship for its scrap value — about Rs. 3.3 lakh — to a local company. However, the wreckage could not be completely removed.

The ruined ship attracted a lot of curious onlookers, but it also turned into a death trap. Many who swam close to it were not aware of the buried, sharp steel girders and were often fatally injured. In January 1983, over three days that followed Pongal, 19 dead bodies were washed ashore. This tragedy created a furore.

“We certainly don’t want many more parents and friends to say he touched the ship and he touched death,” in anguish, wrote Rev. Dr. Joseph A.L. Baynes, a reader of The Hindu, and urged the government to quickly clear the damaged ship.

Finally in 1990, a major effort was made to haul the wreckage to shore. A Bombay-based company mobilised more than 30 strong workers to wrap the broken ship with wires and tried to haul it with the help of two winches. The wreckage was removed, but not completely.

Collapse of Arctic Sea Ice……A Warning….

Arctic Expert Predicts Final Collapse Of Sea Ice Within Four Years

Arctic Ocean

One of the world’s leading ice experts has predicted the final collapse of Arctic sea ice in summer months within four years.

In what he calls a “global disaster” now unfolding in northern latitudes as the sea area that freezes and melts each year shrinks to its lowest extent ever recorded, Prof Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University calls for “urgent” consideration of new ideas to reduce global temperatures.

In an email to the Guardian he says: “Climate change is no longer something we can aim to do something about in a few decades’ time, and that we must not only urgently reduce CO2 emissions but must urgently examine other ways of slowing global warming, such as the various geoengineering ideas that have been put forward.”

These include reflecting the sun’s rays back into space, making clouds whiter and seeding the ocean with minerals to absorb more CO2.

Wadhams has spent many years collecting ice thickness data from submarines passing below the arctic ocean. He predicted the imminent break-up of sea ice in summer months in 2007, when the previous lowest extent of 4.17 million square kilometres was set. This year, it has unexpectedly plunged a further 500,000 sq km to less than 3.5m sq km. “I have been predicting [the collapse of sea ice in summer months] for many years. The main cause is simply global warming: as the climate has warmed there has been less ice growth during the winter and more ice melt during the summer.

“At first this didn’t [get] noticed; the summer ice limits slowly shrank back, at a rate which suggested that the ice would last another 50 years or so. But in the end the summer melt overtook the winter growth such that the entire ice sheet melts or breaks up during the summer months.

“This collapse, I predicted would occur in 2015-16 at which time the summer Arctic (August to September) would become ice-free. The final collapse towards that state is now happening and will probably be complete by those dates”.

Wadhams says the implications are “terrible”. “The positives are increased possibility of Arctic transport, increased access to Arctic offshore oil and gas resources. The main negative is an acceleration of global warming.”

“As the sea ice retreats in summer the ocean warms up (to 7C in 2011) and this warms the seabed too. The continental shelves of the Arctic are composed of offshore permafrost, frozen sediment left over from the last ice age. As the water warms the permafrost melts and releases huge quantities of trapped methane, a very powerful greenhouse gas so this will give a big boost to global warming.”

Do we have answers for these questions?

SOURCE:::: Input from one of my friends….Each Question is a very valid question….Do we have answer for them ?….or Will we be in a position to find out answers one day???…..It is not a joke… Let us be serious about the questions raised and try to find out the answers in our life time!!!!….. then only next generation will not have any such questions before them….. Let us hope for the best…..

Natarajan

I wish I could have answers to any of the questions below …

It’s not about me, it’s not about you. It’s about the place we stay in, the society we live in, the systems we have!

*I often wonder* when a mosquito bites us why do I think of a repellant, or coil or HIT….why don’t I have the courage to question my municipality?

*Why do I buy* water in a bottle? Why do I purify water at my home? Does the water bill say that the tap water is only for washing clothes or having a bath?
*Why don’t I get drinking water in my tap?

*Why should I pay* a toll tax on every single black, nice looking road? Why a basic road is not my right?

*Why do I buy* an inverter or generator? Why don’t I get current in my wires?

*Why do we call* the private schools as public schools.. I always thought schools run by the government should be called public schools!!

*Why- the cricketers* who sold the ethics of game sit in parliament or come as experts on channels?

*Why someone known* for beating his wife and had charges of holding drugs is a celebrity to judge dance shows and all of us watch and clap too.

*Why is it that the* so called high profile tainted journalists still run public shows and we all watch it..

*Why don’t I know* the fine on jumping red light or for not wearing a helmet but am very well aware of power of 100 rupees, the cost of duty of most of the traffic guys across the country..

*Why is a girl raped* in a roaming car in the capital of the country almost every month and all that the government says is that girls should be careful..

*Why does the trial* and judgment of social activists just takes a few weeks but Rajas, Rajus, Reddys roam around !!

*Why even after killing hundreds* of people on road the blue line buses remaine on roads? Do you know any city apart from the capital of your country where the city buses crushed people on a daily basis?

*Why didn’t we come on the roads* when someone made elephants of stones for thousands of crores rupees in U.P. where people still dig pits to sleep or die of hunger?

*Why a tainted, corrupt minister* is called to IIM and Academy for IAS and applauded – unstopped on his desi style?

*Its so easy to call someone corrupt but have you ever thought; *The act of bribe starts by giving not by taking* … it starts from me not from him or her … so why don’t I look at myself first ?

*I strongly believe that the *Logic is always for NOT doing something … Doing does not need logic,* *doers don’t believe in logic!*

*Just a couple of years back some people came and played with us, killed our pride and people. We were angry … some people thought that the attack in Mumbai was on rich people and therefore something would change …

*Nothing happened … we all go to Gateway of India on every anniversary in November, burn some wax, sing some songs and come back. Nothing changes – the government is back, Z security is back and people are back at the Gateway of India …

*It’s time to come out, stand up*… move … do something … Sitting in drawing rooms or discussing over a mug of beer will not solve anything..

*Please remember this country does not need thinkers any more, enough of them … what you need is action …*

WHY SHOULD I RAIN ?… RAIN CLOUD IS ASKING US !!!!!!

SOURCE::::UNKNOWN…. A PERTINENT QUESTION RAISED BY RAIN GOD OR CLOUD ….IT IS FOR US TO ANSWER……..

Natarajan

WE HAVE GONE TOO FAR IN A WRONG ROUTE – COMPLETE INDUSTRIALISATION –
WHILE OUR COUNTRY IS BASICALLY AGRICULTURE ORIENTED.  NOW ALL TANKS, LAKES, CULTIVABLE LANDS HAVE TURNED INTO CONCRETE BUILDINGS FOR  NOWADAYS IT HAS BECOME THE PRIME OBJECT OF EVERYONE TO OWN AT LEAST ONE HOUSE…SO THE MAD WORLD HAS TOTALLY  FORGOTTEN ABOUT AGRICULTURE WHICH IS GOING TO RESULT IN 10 OR 15 YEARS’ TIME MAN HAS TO EAT ONLY …….WHAT?????? NO RAIN SO NO WATER AND SO NO CULTIVATION… WE DUG SO NICELY OUR OWN GRAVES…..ENJOY!

I am a Conscious Rain-Cloud – “I chose”
only the Green fields!

I prefer like this fields
This place….I like to rain here!
I often visit here to drizzle….
I roll over here in the meadows…
Concrete – Jungle with No Green Trees
Here…You men uproot trees & greeneries

 `

No grass fields – but piling wastes!
Not on grass fields – kids playing on garbage!
Mounting wastes and garbage of the world!
Deserting civilization

Result would be: Desert & Barren lands sooner everywhere in the World!
Reasons I, the Rain can say:
1. Industrialization produces more and more “colorful synthetic wastes” which destroys my soil and my water resources.
2. You refuse to respect Agriculture and Natural living.
3. Hence, you destroy Green fields and Forests and creating acres of huge-mega sized industries and concrete IT parks, only to destroy the 100s of Trees and plants living over there for decades.
4. You never take care to plant trees and grow greeneries over there, but take full precautions to prevent them growing in the fully paved concrete floors and path ways.
5. You consciously cut even the road/street side Trees which are planted and maintained by Govt local authorities, so as to have a clear view of  your mega malls and concrete parks!! You uproot trees and grass fields, strange, but placing plastic green-plants for your pleasing vision!!
So,
When there is no Trees and grass fields,
Why should I Rain?
For whom?that too on these lifeless ‘concrete Deserts’?
Rain-I am! A thinking-genius, you will realize it soon…!!
