What Causes Turbulance ?….Is It Dangerous ?

Turbulence is what nervous fliers fear the most when they board an aircraft. It is also the most common cause of injury to air passengers – pilots will always keep their seatbelts fastened while seated on an aircraft and will usually advise you to do the same. But is it really something to be afraid of? British Airways pilot Steve Allright explains.

What causes turbulence, and is it dangerous?
What causes turbulence?
Many different things may cause turbulence, but each and every one of them is known and understood by pilots. Every day I fly, I expect a small amount of turbulence, just as I’d expect the odd bump in the road on the drive to work. Turbulence is uncomfortable but not dangerous. It is part of flying, and is not to be feared.
Different aspects of the weather cause different types of turbulence. CAT is an abbreviation for Clear Air Turbulence – the most common form of turbulence you are likely to experience.

Air tends to flow as a horizontal snaking river called a jet stream. A jet stream can sometimes be thousands of miles long but is usually only a few miles wide and deep. Depending on the direction of travel, our flight planners either avoid (into a headwind) or use (into a tailwind) these jet streams to cut fuel costs, as they can flow up to 250 mph. Just like a fast-flowing river swirling against the riverbank, where the edge of the jet stream interacts with slower moving air, there may be some mixing of the air which causes turbulence.

Can it be avoided?

You cannot see CAT, you cannot detect it on radar and you cannot accurately forecast it, but there are other ways of avoiding it. In the main we rely reports from other aircraft, which we hear either directly or which are passed on by air traffic control. We then consider the options available to us. Our endeavours to fly at an altitude that has been reported as smooth may be prevented by several constraints such another aircraft occupying that level, or the weight of the aircraft at that time.

Whatever the circumstances, your pilot will find the most comfortable path to your destination without compromising your safety. Just like you, we experience the movement and would prefer a smoother ride.

Is turbulence more likely on certain routes?

Any airport is at the mercy of strong winds on any given day. The same applies to jet streams on any given route, although there is generally more chance of turbulence crossing the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) when flying south across Africa, for example.

How bad can turbulence get?

Flight crews around the world share a common classification of turbulence: light, moderate and severe. The definitions are laid down in our manuals and help us to make an assessment as to what our course of action should be. For the fearful flyer, even light turbulence can be upsetting. For pilots, light turbulence is no different to a bumpy road for a taxi driver or a slightly uneven section of track for a train driver – a small, but totally safe, inconvenience and very much part of our daily lives. In light turbulence, the aircraft may be deviating by just a few feet in altitude.

Moderate turbulence strikes no fear into pilots, as they will experience this level of turbulence for a few hours in every thousand hours they fly. It usually lasts for no more than 10 or 15 minutes, but occasionally may last for several hours, on and off. This sort of turbulence will unsettle even some regular travellers and will cause drinks to spill. The aircraft may be deviating in altitude by 10 or 20 feet. No action is required by the pilot to control the aircraft, but the flight crew may decide to try a different altitude if the turbulence persists.

Severe turbulence is extremely rare. In a flying career of over 10,000 hours, I have experienced severe turbulence for about five minutes in total. It is extremely uncomfortable but not dangerous. The aircraft may be deviating in altitude by up to 100 feet (30 metres) or so, up as well as down, but nothing like the thousands of feet you hear some people talking about when it comes to turbulence.

I should stress that this level of turbulence is so rare that leisure travellers will almost certainly never experience it and nor will most business people.

Miracle of Mother Nature !!! Watch Thousands of Birds Dance in the Twilight !!!

http://vimeo.com/31158841

Murmuration – it is something amazing to see.

No one knows why they do it. Yet each fall, thousands of starlings dance in the twilight above England and Scotland. The birds gather in shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia to escape winter’s frigid bite. Scientists aren’t sure how they do it, either.

The starlings’ murmurations are manifestations of swarm intelligence, which in different contexts is practiced by schools of fish, swarms of bees, and colonies of ants. As far as I am aware, even complex algorithmic models haven’t yet explained the starlings’ aerobatics, which rely on the tiny birds’ quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions—and predators—in the giant flock.

” A Flight To Moon ” !!!

Astonishing photographs taken by a French photograph have created the illusion that a cargo of air passengers are off to a very exotic location… the Moon.

Photographer Sebastien Lebrigand, 38, took the striking shots as he walked alone under the night sky.

Mr Lebrigand, a father-of-two, said the aeroplanes looked ‘so close’ to the Moon as the Airberlin and Condor planes flew from the Balearic Islands, in Spain, to Germany.

Mr Lebrigand, an electrician’s mate, said: ‘It was a still night and the Moon was rising, almost full.

‘I find it fascinating that the planes appear so close to the Moon, but yet so far – much like we are on earth, in relation to the rest of the Universe.

‘To me, pictures are beautiful when they are unusual, and these are no different.’

He captured the images near his home in Crepy-en-Valois, near Paris in France, using a special lens designed for astrophotography.

He said: ‘What I’ve managed to capture is more or less what one would see with a telescope.’

He used a Canon EOS 500D and an i-Nova EDTF 102 Triplet optical instrument.

Mr Lebrigand added: ‘These photos are unusual and difficult to make but I enjoy it as I am a devoted observer of the sky.

‘It fascinates me. As I watched the planes, I thought about all the different people on board, flying all those miles above earth.’

An Aircraft To Fly Anywhere in the World In Just 4 hours !!!!

British aerospace firm Reaction Engines is working on an aircraft it believes would be able to take passengers anywhere in the world in just four hours.
The vehicle would also be able to fly in outer space.

skylon reaction engines

A rendering of Reaction Engines’ Skylon aircraft taking off.

Reaction Engines says there’s only one truly new technology in the aircraft that makes those things possible: the precooler.

In a new video, chief engineer Alan Bond explains that air entering the new “Sabre” engine system could be cooled by more than 1,000 degrees Celsius in .01 seconds. That ability would allow a jet engine to run at higher power than what is possible today.

More power = more speed. Enough to fly at Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, “pretty easily,” Bond says.

The Telegraph explained the technology in an article in late 2012:

The breakthrough technology is a cooling system which uses an array of thin pipes, arranged in a “swirl” pattern and filled with condensed helium, to extract heat from air and cool it to minus 150C before it enters the engine.

In normal circumstances, this would cause moisture in the air to freeze, coating the engine with frost, but the company has also developed a method which prevents this from happening.

The company eventually hopes to use its cooling technology to build a plane that transports 300 passengers and flies like a rocket. It will “transform high-speed aviation,” Bond says, adding, “we have no competitors. We are unique.”

The aircraft itself will measure 276 feet long, and be called the Skylon. It would take off and land horizontally (like a plane), which would make it easier to reuse than a standard rocket. But in addition to the $1.1 billion price tag for each one, there’s another big downside: The Skylon has no windows, a major bummer for those excited to fly in space.

The company is currently in the process of testing the system. Test flights of the Skylon are planned for 2019.

Impressive Image of ISS Passing in Front Of Moon !!!!!

While testing his new telescope a Romanian astrophotographer managed to capture clear images of the International Space Station passing in front of the moon, in broad daylight.

And the snap makes Nasa’s space station look remarkably like the iconic USS Enterprise from TV show Star Trek.

Maximilian Teodorescu was testing the range of his new 150mm f/12 Maksutov telescope near the town of Dumitrana in Romania earlier this month when he took the shot.
This shot of the International Space Station as it crosses in front of the moon was taken by Romanian astrophotographer Maximilian Teodorescu.

The USS Enterprise was one of the ships that featured in the Star Trek franchise.

The Starship Enterprise was one of the ships that featured in the Star Trek franchise. In the show, this NX-01 model was the first NX-class starship and was launched by the United Earth Starfleet in 2151

Teodorescu took the images on 15 June at around 6.17pm in Romania.

He posted the photos to his blog. Translated from Romanian, it reads: ‘A new ‘First-light’ or rather ‘First-photo’.

‘This time it’s a new instrument, a 150mm F/12 Maksutov.’

‘And what better topic for a first test if not the moon?’

He then adds he was surprised to see the International Space Station in transit so clearly.

He explains that the equipment used to capture the picture was Skywatcher 150mm Mak (F = 1800mm), Canon 550D, ISO 800, 1/1250s.

The angle of the International Space Station (ISS) in Teodorescu’s images bear a striking resemblance to the USS Enterprise starship from the TV show Star Trek.

The ISS first launched into space in 1998 and since the arrival of Expedition 1 in November 2000 the station has been continuously occupied.

It is currently the longest continuous human presence in space and in 2010, the station broke the previous record of almost 10 years -or 3,634 days – held by Nasa’s Mir station.

It has been visited by astronauts and cosmonauts from 15 different nations.

One of its most famous inhabitants was Commander Chris Hadfield from Canada who regularly tweeted images and videos from the station.
