Understanding Calendar….

Calendar is an English word which shares its root with “KALANTARA” in Sanskrit, meaning time gap, elapsed time , or time between any two events. “KALA” means TIME and “ANTARA” means in between. ANTARA bears similarity with the english words “inter”, “intra”, “enter” etc. Calendar is indeed a measure between two periods of Time…KALA ANTARA.

Calendars and clocks are not just some decorative pieces on the wall as they have come to be today. A Calendar is an extension of a clock and tracks time beyond a day.

Traditional calendars locate us and our earth exactly in space in relation to Sun, Moon and the Planets. They are thus clocks that represent the pace of functioning of the cosmos. When the design and components of a calendar are understood, they bring us closer to understanding the functioning of the cosmos.

We can see our ancestors had not only understood the functioning of cosmos, but had also worked out models for translating it into mathematical calculations. These models are available to us today in the form of “PANCHANGA”, the Indian calendrical system. These models help conduct our lives in sync. with Nature around us. They indicate the time for rains, to sow, to harvest, to fish, to set sail, to celebrate various festivals and so on. They mark the coming of seasons and prepare us for that season.

From the knowledge of the motions of the planetary bodies also came the knowledge of the effect they have on man and his surroundings .From this was born Astrology, a model to predict favourable times for performing certain activities on the earth.

HORA is the Indian word for Time. This comes from “AHORATRA” meaning ” continuous , unending cycle of day and night ” .From the same root as HORA come words in English such as Horology meaning study of time, Horoscope which is a plot of the planetary positions as well as hour.

Wishing you all Good Times Ahead in the year 2013 ….

Tulsi Gabbard…First ever US Lawmaker who has taken oath of Office on Bhagavad Gita!!!!!

Tulsi Gabbard becomes first Hindu ever to become member of the US House of Representatives
Tulsi Gabbard is the first ever member of the US House of Representatives to take oath of office on Bhagavad Gita.
WASHINGTON: Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaiihas created history by not only becoming the first Hindu ever to be sworn in as a member of the US House of Representatives, but also being the first ever US lawmaker to have taken oath of office on the sacred Bhagavad Gita.Tulsi, 31, was administered the oath of office by the John Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“I chose to take the oath of office with my personal copy of the Bhagavad-Gita because its teachings have inspired me to strive to be a servant-leader, dedicating my life in the service of others and to my country,” Gabbard said after the swearing in ceremony yesterday.

“My Gita has been a tremendous source of inner peace and strength through many tough challenges in life, including being in the midst of death and turmoil while serving our country in the Middle East,” she said explaining the reasons for taking the oath of office on Gita.

“I was raised in a multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-faith family. My mother is Hindu; my father is a Catholic lector in his church who also practices mantra meditation. I began to grapple with questions of spirituality as a teenager,” Gabbard said.

“Over time, I came to believe that, at its essence, religion gives us a deeper purpose in life than just living for ourselves. Since I was a teenager, I have embraced this spiritual journey through the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita.

“..In so doing, have been blessed with the motivation and strength to dedicate my life in service others in a variety of ways,” she said.

Proud of her Hindu religion, she is not Indian or of Indian heritage. Her father Mike Gabbard, is currently Hawaii State Senator and mother Carol Porter Gabbard is an educator and business owner.

At 21, she became the youngest person elected to the Hawaii Legislature. At 23, she was the state’s first elected official to voluntarily resign to go to war. At 28, she was the first woman to be presented with an award by the Kuwait Army National Guard.

Gurgling waters for the flow of life,
A robe of green of the mother earth,
Rhythmic pecks of a wood pecker
Mimicking sounds of a tap dancer,
And trees all tall seeking the skies,
Where but here can all these exist?

The selfless care of mother’s love,
Shrieks of joy when children play,
Vigor of youth in deeds all benign,
A flash in their eyes to lure a mate,
And heart to care for near and dear,
Where but here can all these exist?

On the eve of the grand year anew
With faith that only love binds us all,
May we chant a prayer to the Lord
To give us ample strength to hold
All yonder blessings to remain ever
In years aplenty in the flow of time.

Message for The Day….Practice Righteousness….

Each heart is a Dharmakshethra (a warfield of righteousness), where there is a constant battle between the forces of good and evil. Why, the whole world is a Dharmakshethra. Hence it is very essential that every single child and mother, each and every one of you be devoted to Dharma (righteousness). The holy Bhagavad Gita begins with the word, ‘Dharmakshethrae’ and in the final chapter appears the phrase “Sarva Dharman Parithyajya”, meaning ‘give up all Dharma’. The significance of this is that through Dharma, you have to transcend Dharma. What is needed is the steadfast practice of righteousness. Scholarship and wealth are often burdens, they are indeed a handicap. Practice alone counts in spiritual matters.

If there is righteousness in your heart, there will be beauty in your character
and harmony at your home. – Baba

Mahaperivaa…..A Dheergadarisi !!!!

An episode as narrated by Dr.S.Kalyanaraman.Neuro Surgeon of Chennai……

With namaskarams to His Holy Feet I wish to record some interesting events that took place during the darshan of His Holiness Sri Sri Chandrasekara Saraswathi Swamigal.

I was a neighbour of “Pradosam Venkatarama Iyer” and because of his association I was drawn towards Maha Periyaval and from that moment the joy and happiness my family members and I have received is beyond words.

Regular darshan and interaction between 1978 and 1984 has made me gain knowledge about many religious activities. I am able to chant many verses and also assist my gurukul at Selaiyur in homas. This is all due to kindness and blessings I have got from Maha Periyaval.

I would like to share some events.

Sri Pradosam Venkatarama Iyer celebrated the Platinum Jubilee Peetarohanam of Maha Periyaval in a very religious manner and a procession was arranged with the Periaval’s photo in a well decorated chariot. The elephant and horse were sent from Mahalakshmi temple at Adyar by Sri Mukkur Srinivasachari. The procession went round “Gangadeeswarar temple” in Egmore and returned.

“Pradosam Uncle” gave me the photo album taken during the occasion and asked me to show it to Maha Periaval who was on his padayatra. As I was fortunate I took it and showed to Maha Periyaval during my darshan. After going through all the photos He returned the album to me and asked me whether the elephant had “Namam” and I replied to His Holiness that Namam was there. He further asked me whether the horse had Namam. I told him that I did not remember this. He asked me to check the album and reply. To everyone’s surprise the horse too had Namam. This revealed the keenness of His Holiness even while glancing through a photo album.

Everyone is aware that devotees throng to have Periyaval’s darshan wherever He stayed. One lady devotee from Mumbai was very regular to have His darshan. On one occasion when the lady devotee came to have His darshan His Holiness called her and asked the following questions.

His Holiness: What is the distance of your husband’s office from your house?

Lady devotee: It is about two Kilometers.

His Holiness:Do you have a telephone in your house?

Lady devotee: No, but my neighbour has a phone and he will call us in case of any emergency.

His Holiness:Then you should at once go back to Mumbai.

Lady devotee: I have come here with an idea of staying 3 or 4 days to have your darshan.

His Holiness: Now you had my darshan. So please go back to your place.

With much hesitation the lady devotee returned home.

After a period of six months the lady devotee came once again to have His darshan and His Holiness enquired about the health condition of the lady’s husband.

Actually what happened is this – the husband of the lady devotee had an accident in his office and the phone intimation was given to lady’s neighbour. His Holiness knew about this and asked the lady devotee to go back. Now, the lady devotee asked His Holiness that as he knew all these things, she said that He could have stopped the incident! His Holiness gently replied saying that things which were going to happen could not be stopped but being a devotee of Kamakshi Amman the repercussions would be small, and that consoled her.

Such kind of acts are innumerable and only one instance has been given here.

Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!

Message for The Day…The Name of God will Light the Spark of Wisdom….

So long as the consequence of Karma persists, you are bound to be born again and again to finish the consumption thereof. The slate of Karma has to be wiped clean so that your account of birth and death can be settled and closed with no balance. The Name of the Lord can light the spark of love within you to ignite the fire of Spiritual Wisdom, which will guide your mind towards this goal. Just as two branches of a tree, when grated one against another for some time generates enough heat to set the tree on fire, so too, continuous and sincere repetition of the names of the Lord will light the spark of wisdom within you. The holy Bhagavad Geetha says, Jnanagni dagdha karmanam – ‘The flames of wisdom reduce to ashes the effects of all activities’; they do not affect one anymore just like a rope that has been reduced to ash can bind no more.

One who discriminates well before engaging in any activity will naturally be righteous in conduct and behavior. – Baba

Engineer vs Manager !!!

A man in a hot air balloon realized that he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The woman below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 50 and 51 degrees north latitude and between 114 and 115 degrees west longitude.

“You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist.

“I am,” replied the woman. “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “Everything you told me is technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information. The fact is, I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip.”

The woman below responded, “You must be in management.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. ….. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. ….. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep… And you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, you’ve managed to make it my fault!

Handful of Rice for Poor….Mahaperiva”s Advice….

Mahaperiavaa used to advice… “Everyday morning a handful of rice …uncooked… must be set apart for the poor. All families must do this without fail everyday. The rice thus kept must be collected from house to house every quarter , cooked and offered to the Deity of the local temple as Naivedya and then distributed among the poor people.

With the handful of rice every day, setapart for the poor people, keep just one Rupee also. The one Rupee collected from each family would be sufficient to buy cooking media and fuel . To carryout such a scheme is to do a great service to the poor. …and in turn to GOD.”
