Bashyam Basheer Ahamad Street !!!

A road straddling two religions

SRIRAM V……in THE HINDU…

natarajan

In an inspired moment, the street in Alwarpet , Chennai  was named after two giants of the legal field, K. Bhashyam Iyengar and Basheer Ahmed Sayeed

Fellow heritage enthusiast and writer, Dr G. Sundaram, wondered as to the origins of Bashyam Basheer Ahmed Street in Alwarpet. Have the signboard painters got it wrong he wondered. But for once they had it right. It is indeed Bashyam Basheer Ahmed Street. And as for its Vaishnavite-Muslim name combination, the explanation is simple — it commemorates two men — K. Bhashyam Iyengar and Basheer Ahmed Sayeed. Both were giants of the legal field.

Bhashyam enrolled as an advocate in 1906. He apprenticed under his father-in-law, the legendary Sir VC Desikachariar, and later worked with leaders such as VV Srinivasa Iyengar and S. Srinivasa Iyengar. He was greatly successful in independent practice as well. He wrote a classic commentary on the Negotiable Instruments Act, while still in the early days of his career and is even now referred to at times as NI Act Bhashyam to distinguish him from the other, Sir V Bhashyam Iyengar.

But it is his services to social causes that earned him immortality. Active in the freedom struggle he was beaten by the police and also sentenced. He took to representing in court, people charged for participating in the independence movement. He was to be a member of the Syndicates of the Madras and Annamalai Universities, a councillor, a member of the Legislature and a minister in the Prakasam Ministry of 1946-47. He died in 1959.

Basheer Ahmed enrolled in the High Court in 1925. An expert in languages and also Islamic law, he rose quickly in practice and was later made a judge of the Madras High Court. He was confirmed as a judge in 1950. Like Bhashyam, he too was actively involved in social causes, one of the prime beneficiaries being the Music Academy, of which he was a member of the executive committee.

It was at his prompting that the Academy purchased its present property. Justice Basheer Ahmed, in 1951, set up the Southern India Education Trust along with a few other prominent Muslims of Madras.

Sixteen acres of land were purchased in the Teynampet area and in 1955, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who greatly admired Basheer Ahmed’s legal acumen and learning, laid the foundation stone of the SIET College, the first of the many SIET institutions. Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed died in 1984.

K. Bhashyam lived in Champaka Vilas, at the intersection of Luz Church Road and Mowbrays (now TTK) Road. That property is a rabbit’s warren of flats now. The other side of Mowbray’s Road, was mainly paddy fields, with the vast Sudder Court (native courts of the 18 century) in the distance. The main court building, Sadr Gardens, was Basheer Ahmed Sayeed’s residence. It still exists, a magnificent pile.

When the surrounding area was developed in the 1940s, roads were laid and one connected Sadr Gardens to Mowbrays Road. In an inspired moment, it was decided to name it after both men and so we have it, Bashyam Basheer Ahmed Street.

Happily, it remains so.

Internet is 30 Years Young Today !!!!!

The Internet, a revolutionary and cheap communications system that has transformed the lives of billions of people across the world, turned 30 on Tuesday.

The computer network officially began its technological revolution when it fully substituted previous networking systems on January 1 1983.

Known as “flag day”, it was the first time the US Department of Defence (DoD)-commissioned Arpanet network fully switched to use of the Internet protocol suite (IPS) communications system.

Using data “packet-switching”, the new method of linking computers paved the way for the arrival of the World Wide Web.

“I don’t think that anybody making that switch on the day would have realised the importance of what they were doing,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Chris Edwards, an electronics correspondent for Engineering and Technology magazine, as saying.

“But without it the internet and the World Wide Web as we know them could not have happened.”

Commenting on the historic event’s impact on the world, Edwards said: “The internet means there is nowhere and no one in the world you can’t reach easily and cheaply.”

Based on designs by Welsh scientist Donald Davies, the Arpanet network began as a military project in the late 1960s.

It was developed at prestigious American universities and research laboratories, such as the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Stanford Research Institute.

Starting in 1973, work on the powerful and flexible IPS and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) technology which would change mass communications got under way.

The new systems were designed to replace the more vulnerable Network Control Program (NCP) used previously, making sure the network was not exposed to a single point of failure.

This meant a single attack could not bring it down, making it safer and more reliable, the report said.

By January 1 1983, the substitution of the older system for the new Internet protocol had been completed and the Internet was born.

British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee was then able to use it to host the system of interlinked hypertext documents he invented in 1989, known as the World Wide Web.

Secret of Happiness….

YOGAKSHEMAM VAHAMYAHAM

One day, one friend asked another, ‘How is it that you are always so happy? You have so much energy, and you never seem to get down.. ‘

With her eyes smiling, she said, ‘ I know the Secret!’ ‘What secret is that? ‘ To which she replied, I’ll tell you all about it, But you have to promise to Share the Secret with others.’

‘The Secret is this: I have learned there is little I can do In my life that will make me truly happy I must depend on God to make Me happy and to meet my needs. When a need arises in my life, I have to trust God to supply According to HIS riches. I have learned most of the time I don ‘ t need half of what I think I do. He has never let me down. Since I learned that ‘ Secret ‘ , I am happy.’

The questioner’s first thought was, ‘ That’s too simple! ‘ But upon reflecting over her own life She recalled how she thought a bigger house Would make her happy, but it didn’t! She thought a better paying job Would make her happy, but it hadn’t. When did she realize her greatest happiness? Sitting on the floor with her grandchildren, Playing games, eating pizza or reading a story, A simple gift from God.

Now you know it too! We can’t depend on people to make us happy. Only GOD in His infinite wisdom can do that. Trust HIM! And now I pass the Secret on to you! So once you get it, what will you do?

YOU have to tell someone the Secret, too!

That GOD in His wisdom will take care of YOU! But it ‘ s not really a secret… We just have to believe it and do it.. Really trust God! I just did and hope you will too.

“To have God in our side doesn’t mean sailing on a boat with no storms, it means having a boat that no storm can sink!”

Message for The Day…Adhere to Right Conduct….

God will not be attracted by learning, wealth or material possessions. God is drawn only by devotion. Take to Him, any troubles you have – He will accept all of them and fill you with joy. God loves every devotee. He accepts you for who you are. He is aware of all the difficult situations, trials and tribulations you go through and your devotion to Him, which gives you so much happiness. However, this devotion alone is not enough. What is needed is the regulation of that Divine Love, in the form of virtue and service. Do not criticise others, rather criticize yourself. Have the Name of the Lord on your tongue and the Form of the Lord before your eye. If you shape yourself this way, the place where you live will be the holiest of all. Let all your activities be directed only towards this purification in your hearts. I bless each and every one of you with success, in this noble effort!

To secure the grace of God you must adhere to right conduct and observe purity in thought, word and deed. – Baba

A Blow at 30000 ft. Saves a Doctor at Flight !!!!!!

source::::TIMES OF INDIA..chennai…
Natarajan

A 46-year-old surgeon got a fresh lease of life, literally, on board a Kolkata-Chennai flight that was cruising at 30,000 feet on Saturday night. He fell unconscious and lost all pulse but was revived miraculously after a doctor who was on board gave a strong blow to the rib cage close to the heart. He sat up as if woken up from a deep slumber.

About 30 minutes after the IndiGo flight took off from Kolkata, the passenger fell unconscious. Thankfully, the flight had around half a dozen doctors returning to Chennai after an annual conference. Dr J S Rajkumar, chairman of Lifeline Hospitals, who was one of the first to rush to his help, said it was a shocking experience which taught several others a valuable lesson about the importance of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

“Assessing him rapidly, we saw to our horror that he had no pulse, even in his neck, and was ice cold and unresponsive. He was dead for all practical purposes,” said Dr Raj Kumar. “I have never felt such cold skin in my life. I gave a strong pericardial thump (a strong blow to the rib cage in front of the heart) and he jumped back to life! His pulse and blood pressure returned to normal,” he said. The revived passenger is a surgeon at Vijaya Hospital.

The doctors had told the crew that the plane would have to land in Bhubaneswar if the passenger’s condition didn’t improve. But once he was revived, the doctors told them he was doing fine and there was no need to make the unscheduled landing. “He did not know what happened to him when he was without pulse for less than four minutes. It is a heart condition and needed monitoring for 24 hours. We sat beside him throughout the flight,” said Raj Kumar. The passenger was driven to Vijaya Hospital for further monitoring as soon as the flight landed in Chennai.

Message For the Day…Jana Seva is Janardhana Seva….

Today we bid farewell to the year gone by and welcome the new year. We pray that the new spring should confer on all beings longevity, health and goodness. Pleasant experiences and unpleasant memories of the previous year that linger in the mind, contain many good lessons. When one reviews the past year within oneself, one can realise how much time was spent selfishly and how much in service. It is not good to keep quiet when there are people around in the society facing hardships. If need be, you should give up japa and sadhana (Spiritual practices), and uplift such people through service and sacrifice. You should feel that Jana Seva is Janaardhana Seva (service to people is service to God). Those who seek the joy of liberation should burn selfishness in the fire of jnana (spiritual wisdom).

Make good use of time by recognising what is permanent and true in human life. – Baba

Tablets….A Global Buzz in 2012…..

Tablets are the future of smart computing and in the year 2012 while the smartphones got bigger, the tablets got smaller. Thanks to a slew of releases, the 10-inch iPad has some serious competitors and while their screen size might be only 7-inches, we feel these three tablets have managed to create a buzz globally.

So why are these devices on the list? We’ve taken these three devices because they were definitely the most talked about online in 2012, and consumers were keen to know everything about them. From features and prices to reviews, these three 7-inch tablets were the talk of 2012 for good reasons and bad.

The Nexus 7: This Google tablet co-manufactured with Asus has a seven-inch screen, but don’t let the size fool you. The tablet which was announced at Google’s i/o conference in June, was the first 7-incher to house a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, which includes a 12-core GPU. Not only did it have speed, the device had price on its side as well. It costs only $200, though in India it was launched for Rs 19,999, which is a tad pricey but hey, it’s still cheaper than the iPad mini.

The tablet also comes with the pure Google OS, Android Jelly Bean 4.1 ( at the time of the release) and this was upgraded to Jelly Bean 4.2 in November when Google launched the Nexus 10. So yes for Android fans who want the pure Google OS, this is the tablet to go for.

The Nexus 7 and the iPad mini in this combo photo. AFP

In terms of sales, the Nexus 7 did very well, despite the fact that it does not have cellular connectivity. According to Asus, Nexus 7 sales were close to 1 million a month. And according to IDC data, AsusTek saw its tablet shipments more than triple to 2.4 million and at the end of Q3 2012 it had a market share of 8.6 percent, up from 3.8 percent.

And yes, for the tech reviewers, this was an amazingly fast tablet. As this CNET review highlights:

the Nexus 7 feels lighter than the Kindle Fire and the soft, textured back makes the tablet comfortable to hold. Apps loaded quickly… The screen looks great, feels responsive, and the tablet already does a good job of demonstrating its power in games and movie performance.

Not only was it a fast tablet with a decent screen resolution (1280×800 pixels), and thus it set the bar for all the other tiny tablets.

The iPad mini: The big question with the iPad mini was always if Apple would launch a $200 device. Apple and cheap don’t always feature in the same sentence and perhaps the biggest disappointment with the iPad mini was its price.  The 16GB version with just Wi-Fi starts at a whopping $329 while 16GB version with Wi-Fi plus cellular connectivity starts at $429. In India the device launched at Rs 21,900 which is still cheap considering the new iPod Touch starts Rs 23,900.

But yes, the iPad mini does come with cellular connectivity and for those who want to stay connected at all times, this would have been the perfect choice. The iPad mini has a has a dual-core A5 processor clocked at 1 GHZ, with a 7.9 inch screen (diagonally) and a screen resolution of 1024×768 pixels, making it around 163 pixels per inch.

Remember it also comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front FaceTime Camera unlike the Nexus 7 which doesn’t have a rear camera. So for those who can’t get through a day without clicking a picture, the iPad mini holds the edge.

For tech reviewers, the screen was a big let down as far as the iPad mini was concerned. Admittedly it is a powerful device that runs smoothly without any lag, but for Apple fans who are used to ‘Retina Display’ the screen just didn’t cut it.

But that didn’t mean the device didn’t do well. According to this report, Apple iPad mini sales exceeded expectations. Apple expects to ship nearly 8 million of these devices, which is still pretty high considering that a lot of people believe that the tablet is over-priced.

The rumour is that in 2013 Apple will launch the iPad mini 2 with Retina Display. Should Google be worried?

The Kindle Fire HD: After the launch of the Nexus 7 with its superior screen and processor, the question was whether Amazon could reply to Google’s challenge. And it did. The Kindle Fire HD was launched in September. Amazon’s new version of the 7-inch tablet now has an HD screen but the processor is still the dual-core one. So yes, images and videos were sharper, but in terms of speed and OS, Amazon’s Kindle has a long way to go.

The Kindle Fire HD still does not support cellular connectivity and while it does run Android 4.0, it’s still a watered-down version of the OS. Kindle Fire HD  is being sold at $199, so in terms of price it is Nexus 7′s biggest competitor.

For those who order a lot of content from Amazon such as books, movies, etc, the Kindle Fire HD is definitely a better option. However for tech critics, the Kindle Fire HD was a major disappointment.

Amazon is still the number 3 supplier for tablets worldwide and has a market share of 9 percent. The question is whether the next version of the Kindle Fire will offer something drastic to hold on to its position in this highly competitive segment.
