Mammatus clouds over central Texas

Mammatus clouds don’t keep extending downward to form tornadoes, as some believe. But they do come before, during or after severe weather.

In and around EarthSky’s hometown of Austin, Texas – and, in fact, up into Oklahoma and other parts of the central U.S. – there was some catastrophically bad weather over the Memorial Day weekend. Those who look skyward also noticed lots of mammatus clouds over a period of several days, like these clouds captured by Anne Marie in Georgetown, Texas. These ominous but beautiful clouds can appear around, before or after storms. Anne Marie appears to have caught them as the clouds were breaking up, just as the sun was going down. She wrote:

One day, a cowboy rode into a Wild, Wild West town. The people in the town love to play jokes on visitors. After tying his horse to the pole outside a bar, the cowboy went in. “A cup of milk please.” he said to the bartender. After drinking, he went out, only to find his horse missing. Knowing that the villagers did it, he went back into the bar and said to everybody,” I am going to have another drink and when I finish it, I want to see my horse outside! Or else, I will have to do what I did in Texas – HERE!” The people were very frightened. When he finished his drink, he went outside and saw his horse. The villagers had put it back. Curious, the bartender asked the cowboy,” What did you do in Texas?”

The Cowboy replied,” Well, I had to walk home !!!

What happens when it’s so foggy outside, you can’t see anything? Simple. You grab a drone, fly it into the air and use it to capture some amazing video. Mike Prendergast posted an aerial view of today’s dense fog – December 9, 2014 – in Dallas, Texas. The footage is incredible. Check it out above!

On Tuesday, December 9, a dense fog advisory was issued for parts of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Visibility was less than a quarter of a mile across a good bit of northeast Texas. According to observations at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, visibility dropped to zero for three hours from 7 to 10 a.m. CST. In conditions like this, it’s nearly impossible to drive.

The fog continued after 10 a.m. CST, so the National Weather Service at Fort Worth extended the dense fog advisory until noon.

The fog was so dense that it affected flights out of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Several delays were reported as runway visual range showed airfield visibility down to 700-1000 feet.

Bottom line: What do you do when you have a drone and a ton of fog? If you do what Mike Prendergast did, you’ll capture amazing footage in high definition of a rare sight to see.
