Sri Valli-Teyvanai Samedha MuruganMarch 20, 1968: It was a dark day indeed for the priest at the Ratnagiri Hill Temple, located between Vellore and Arcot about a hundred miles from Chennai. Three months had gone by since he was last paid, and his patience was running out. “How much longer must this go on?” he thought to himself. He was in a particularly sour mood this morning and decided to not perform his obligatory daily worship service in the main shrine of the temple.

About this time, Satchidanandam–a 27-year-old clerk–strolled into the temple for his usual morning worship. When he saw the condition of the main shrine, he was shocked. Not only were the lamps and incense not lit, but also fresh flowers and sacraments had not been gathered and prepared. Nor had the puja implements been cleaned and set out.

“Where is the priest?” he thought to himself. “Why is he not performing the morning puja?” Satchidanandam could not help feeling a special concern for the welfare of this particular temple. His father, Kandaswami Mudaliar, had initiated the construction of the 156 steps leading up to its entrance in 1936 and orchestrated its kumbhabhishekam (major consecration) in 1938.

Although young Satchidanandam was discouraged by what he saw, he still circumambulated the shrine and stood before the Deity to pray. As he began to commune with the shakti that he felt emerging from within the shrine, he fell into a swoon. The experience took him by surprise.

Nothing like this had ever happened to him before. As he leaned against a pillar for support, his body quivered with bliss as his head filled with a golden light. Just as he was about to merge into a sea of oneness, Lord Muruga appeared before him in His etherial body. Although the presence of this legendary God was powerful, He vanished almost as soon as he appeared–like a bolt of lightening.

Slowly, young Satchidanandam settled back into a calm and peaceful physical consciousness. He knew it would take some time to fully digest what had just happened. For now, however, he was aware only of a mighty determination to restore this neglected temple to the state of its original elegance and beauty. At that very moment, the transformed young man took a vow to never leave the Ratnagiri Hill Temple until it had been fully renovated.

Thus began the work that was to be his life’s mission. The residents of the nearby village of Kilminnal stopped calling the young man “Satchidanandam.” Instead, they referred to him as Balamurugan Adimai–or just “Swamiji ” for short.

In the 36 years that have passed since the clerk-turned-holy-man took his vow to do this work, he has not left the temple precincts even once, and his life has been one of exemplary simplicity and austerity. Aside from worshiping and meditating three times daily–at 4:30 in the morning, 12 noon and six in the evening–he remains fully available as a servant of the God that appeared before him during his one unforgettable life-changing experience. Most of his time is spent fully immersed in the supervision of temple construction and the hosting of guests. At 9:00 pm he retires to his room for meditation and sleep. His few personal needs are easily met.

Swamiji is an expert in working with people. He takes special care to become knowledgeable in every aspect of temple construction so that, whether he is talking with sthapatis about stone work or silversmiths about metal crafting, he can negotiate knowledgeably on even the smallest details of their work. He even becomes actively involved with the supervision of photographers and journalists who come regularly to publicize the progress of the on-going renovation.

The neglected Ratnagiri Hill Temple, for which songs were composed and sung by Saint Arunagirinathar in the 14th century, was originally only 200 square feet in size. Today, due to the inspiration and hard work of Balamurugan and the people who help him, it covers more than 30,000 square feet.

Over time Swamiji has also become a spiritual guide and social leader for the residents of Kilminnal. Besides catalyzing their mystical and religious inclinations, he also provides assistance of a more practical sort. So far, he has built a school, a hospital and a number of roads; and provided much-needed water to the area by digging wells and constructing massive tanks for water storage.

It’s no wonder the local people love him and gladly volunteer their time and energy to lift large, heavy granite stones to the hilltop for the temple construction. In 1987, Swamiji began building his school for the youth of the surrounding rural areas by first constructing the Ratnagiri Nursery, which

opened with two teachers and 18 students. Through the years that followed, he constructed additional buildings to provide classroom and library space for education in a variety of fields including math, science, language, literature and computer science.

Today, Swamiji’s school campus includes ample kitchen and bathroom facilities, a large conference hall, several libraries and 24 classrooms. It employs 43 teachers and 12 staff members and provides education for 900 students. The hospital, which Swamiji began constructing in 1988, now has 26 staff members and makes medicine available at subsidized rates to local residents. Monthly eye camps sponsored by the hospital provide poor villagers with cataract operations, free of charge. Medical specialists from Chennai visit every Sunday. The Accident Relief Center, aided by State Government and run by the hospital, provides a fully equipped mobile van–the first of its kind in the Vellore district–for emergency outcalls.

The future of Kilminnal and the Ratnagiri Hill Temple look bright as long as 64-year-old Balamurugan Adimai is around. Although one might assume that the continued improvement, maintenance and management of the temple, school and hospital facilities that have already been created might constitute a full-time job, such might not be the case for the ever-vibrant Balamurugan.

If the past provides any indication of what the future might bring–which usually it does–there should be good reason to assume that more dynamic creativity can be expected from Balamur ugan Adimai.

1968: Satchidanandam enjoys a vision of Lord Muruga. Local villagers name him “Balamurugan.”
1970: Balamurugan begins his service. A well is dug for the temple and nearby village of Kilminnal. The main Ratnagiri mandapam (worship hall) and an entrance Ganesha shrine and mandapam at the base of Ratnagiri Hill are constructed.
1973: Two more temple mandapams and a large marriage hall are built. Six staff buildings and eight guest cottages are also constructed.
1974: An ornate temple entry arch is erected, and electricity is installed to provide night lighting for the temple.
1975: A five-story rajagopuram (main temple tower) is completed. Two 8,000-liter water tanks are installed for use by local residents. A large dining hall and kitchen are built.
1978: A post office and police station for Kilminnal are constructed. Ten staff buildings and four guest cottages are added to the temple.
1988: The long-term construction of a school for local youth begins. A 25-bed hospital is completed.
2003: A separate building for computer training is constructed for the school. Science and library annexes are also added.

ஸந்நிதிக்கு வரும் குழந்தைகளுக்கு வாழைப்பழமோ கற்கண்டோ ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் தவறாமல் வழங்குவார். தாமே நேராகக் கொடுப்பதுண்டு; அணுக்கத் தொண்டர்களைக் கொண்டு கொடுப்பதுமுண்டு.

விடுமுறை நாள்களில் பள்ளி ஆசிரியர்கள் பஸ் அமர்த்திக்கொண்டு பசங்களுடன் வருவது வழக்கம். அதனால் அந்நாள்களில் பணியாளர்கள் முன்னதாகவே வாழைப்பழமும் கற்கண்டும் நிறைய எடுத்து வைத்து விடுவார்கள்.

ஒரு விடுமுறை தினத்தன்று பெரியவாள் “இன்னிக்குக் கொழந்தைகளுக்கு வாழைப்பழம், கல்கண்டு குடுக்க வேண்டாம்” என்றார். ஏன் அப்படிச் சொன்னாரென்று புரியவில்லை.

தப தப என்று ஒரு பஸ்-லோட் பள்ளிச் சிறுவர்கள் ஆசிரியர்களுடன் வந்து விட்டனர். தம்மைக் காண வந்த சிட்டுக்களுக்கு ஒன்றும் தராமலா இந்த மா மதுர மஹா தாத்தா திருப்பி அனுப்பி வைப்பார் என்று பணியாளர் எண்ணினார்.

சரியாக அதே சமயம் திருமாளம் பஞ்சாபகேச ஐயர் என்ற பக்தர் ஒரு மூட்டை ஸஹிதம் வந்தார். மூட்டையைப் பெரியவாளுக்கு ஸமர்ப்பித்து, “பெரிவா ப்ரயோஜனப் படுத்திக்கணும்” என்று விண்ணப்பித்துக் கொண்டார்.

மூட்டையிலிருந்து குண்டு மல்லிகைகள் போன்ற நெற்பொரி. பெரியவாள் திருவமுது செய்து வந்தது அதைத்தான். இதை நினைத்தே அவர் ‘ப்ரயோஜனப் படுத்தி’க் கொள்ளச் சொன்னது. ஆனால் பெரியவாளோ தம்முடைய பிக்ஷைக் காலம் வரை தள்ளிப்போடாமல் அப்போதே அதைப் பிரயோஜனப்படுத்திக் கொண்டு விட்டார்.

பணியாளரைப் பார்த்து, “தேவாளுக்குப் பொரி ரொம்ப இஷ்டம். தெரியுமோ? கல்யாணத்துலகூட லாஜ ஹோமம்னு பொரி ஹோமம் பண்றாளோன்னோ? இந்தக் கொழந்தைகள்ளாம் தேவாள்தான். இவாளுக்கு வெல்லச் சக்கரையும் கொஞ்சம் சேர்த்து பொரி நெறய்ய விநியோகம் பண்ணுங்கோ. ஒடம்புக்கும் ஹிதம். மனஸுக்கும் ஸத்வம். பொரி சாப்பிட்டா பாபம் போறதுன்னு சாஸ்த்ரம்” என்றார்.

அவ்வாறே சிறாருக்கு வெல்லச் சர்க்கரை சேர்த்த பொரி வழங்கப்பட்டது. ஆவலாக வாங்கிக் கொண்டனர்.

தலைமையாசிரியர் வியப்பில் ஏற்பட்ட மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் சொன்னார் : “பசங்களில் பல பேருக்கு மஞ்சட்காமாலையும், வயிற்றுப்போக்கும். வாழைப்பழம் கூடாதென்று டாக்டர் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். ‘பெரியவர்களோ வாழைப்பழம் கொடுப்பதுதானே வழக்கம்? அப்படிக் கொடுத்தால் பிரஸாதத்தை என்ன செய்வது?’ என்று கவலைப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேதான் வந்தேன். பெரியவர்களுக்குத் தெரியாததா? அதுதான் நெற்பொரி கொடுத்து அநுக்கிரஹித்திருக்கிறார்”.

அந்த தீர்க்க திருஷ்டி இருக்கட்டும். அது எல்லா மஹான்களுக்குமே உண்டுதான். ஆனால் அந்தப் பள்ளிப் பாலர்களை தேவர்கள் என்றாரே! அந்த எளிமை அவரொருவருக்கே உரித்தானதல்லவா?

The first step in samskara (refinement) is to remove dirt from the mind. Know that envy is the stickiest dirt. You must be happy, when people around you are happy. That is the true test. The Ramayana says that Lord Rama was happy when joyous events happened to others around, as if they happened to Him. Krishna describes Arjuna as An-asuya(envy-less). What a great compliment to receive from the Master Himself! That is why Lord Krishna taught the mysteries of spiritual discipline to Arjuna. Have deep Love for the Lord. But be very careful not to become depressed with envy when others also love Him or get His attention and become attached to Him. Always be vigilant to have love without envy.

பெரியவா தேனம்பாக்கத்தில் தங்கியிருந்த சமயம். ஸ்ரீ வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் கோவில் சீமா பட்டாசாரியாரை அழைத்து வரும்படி சொன்னார். அவரும் வந்து வந்தனம் செய்தார்.

“இன்னிக்கு என்ன திதி?”

பட்டர் மெதுவாக “ஏகாதசி” என்றார்.

“உபவாசம் நமக்கு மட்டும் தானா? இல்லே, வரதனுக்கும் தானா?”

பட்டர் திகைத்துப் போய் நின்றார்.

“பெருமாளுக்கு இன்னிக்கு நைவ்வேத்யம் ஏன் செய்யல்லே?”

அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த பட்டர் நாக்குழற “தெரியல்லே.. விசாரிச்சிண்டு வரேன்” என்று கலவரத்துடன் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்றார்.

விசாரணையில் உள்கட்டில் ஏதோ தவறு நடந்துள்ளது என்ற உண்மை தெரிய வந்தது. அதை சரி செய்து, தக்க பிராயச்சித்தம் செய்து, பெருமாளுக்கு திருவமுது படைத்து, பிராசதத்தை பெரியவாளுக்கு திருவமுது படைத்து, ப்ரஸாதத்தை கொண்டுவந்து சமர்ப்பித்தார் பட்டர்.

வரதராஜ பெருமாளுக்கு நைவ்வேத்தியம் நடக்கவில்லை என்பது பெரியவாளுக்கு எப்படி தெரிந்தது? தெரிந்திருந்தாலும், அதைப்பற்றி அவர்கள் கவலைப் படுவானேன்?

தேவரகசியம் என்கிறார்களே? அது இதுதானோ? இல்லை, இது தேவராஜ ரகசியம்..! (வரதராஜருக்கு, தேவராஜன் என்ற திருநாமம் உண்டு.)

This holy full moon day is called Vyaasa Poornima, and must be celebrated with prayer and contrition which alone can cleanse the heart, and not by feasting or fasting, which affects only the body. Today the moon shines bright, cool and full, without any hindrance. The mind of a human is compared to the moon, for it is as wayward as the moon with its swing from brightness to darkness. Your mind must be bright, effulgent and cool always. Two statements give you the gist of all the eighteen Puranas composed by sage Vyaasa. “Do good to others; avoid doing harm”. These are the cure for the disease of suffering from joy and grief, honour and dishonour, prosperity and adversity, and all the dual throng that bother you and deprive you of equanimity. Follow the path shown by your Guru. Even Vyaasa can only show you the road. You have to traverse it alone.

ஜூன் 16ம் தேதி இரவில் கேதார்நாத் தலத்தில் சிவபெருமானின் பயங்கர அரூபதாண்டவம் நிகழ்ந்தது. அதிர்ச்சியிலிருந்து மீள இவ்வளவு நாட்கள் ஆகியது. ‘வாய்மை’ வாசகர்களின் சார்பாக திருக்கேதார நாதனுக்கு ஒரு விண்ணப்பம் எழுதியிருக்கிறார் நமது படைப்பாளரும், வாசகருமான திரு.எஸ். சாம்பசிவன். படித்துப் பார்த்தேன். என் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் பெருகியது. உள்ளம் உருகியது. நாம் எடுக்கும் தவறான நடவடிக்கைகளை உடனே நிறுத்தி, தெய்வம் அல்லது இயற்கை அன்னையின் சன்னமான குரல்களுக்குச் செவி சாய்ந்துச் செயல்படும் தருணம் வந்து விட்டது என்பதைச் சூசகமாக உணர்த்தும் உண்ணதமான விண்ணப்பம். உங்களிடம் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள ஒரு க்ஷணமும் தாமதிக்கக் கூடாது என்ற என் உள்ளுணர்வின் காரணமாக உங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன்.

ஹே! கேதார நாதா! திருக்கேதாரத்தின் ஆதாரம் தில்லையிலே என்று சொல்லுவார்களே! ‘கேதாராதி க்ஷேத்ராதாரம்’ என்பதல்லவா வாக்கு. தில்லையிலே ஆனந்த நடனத்தைக்காட்டிய உனக்கு திருக்கேதாரத்திலே ஏன் இந்த கோர தாண்டவம்? நாங்கள் என்ன பிழை செய்தோம்? கடுமையாகத் தண்டித்து விட்டாயே? சங்கரருக்கும் மத்வருக்கும் ராமானுஜருக்கும் சிவானந்தர்களுக்கும் மற்றும் பல கோடி கோடி சாதுக்களுக்கும் சன்யாசிகளுக்கும் ஆத்மஞானிகளுக்கும் பல நூறு ஆண்டுகளாக ஞான மார்க்கத்தைப்போதித்த உனக்கு எங்கள் தலைமுறையினரிடம் என்ன கோபம்? கோடிட்டுக் காட்டியிருக்கலாமே? இப்படியா ருத்ர தாண்டவம்? பிரளயம் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்ற முன்னெச்சரிக்கையா? உனது வில்லில் நாண் ஏற்றி விட்டாயா? நாங்கள் புரிந்துகொண்டோம். எங்களிடம் கோபம் வேண்டாம். திருபுர சம்ஹாரத்தின்போது மேருமலையை வில்லாக வளைத்தாயாமே? இன்று இமயத்தை வளைத்தாயா? இமவான் உனது மாமனார் ஆயிற்றே!. அவரை விட்டுவிடு. கருணாரச வாஹினியான உமையவளும் உன்னிடம் சொல்லவில்லயா? இல்லை, நாங்கள் செய்த தவறு அதற்கும் மேற்பட்டதா?
திருக்கேதாரத்தை ஒரு உல்லாச Hill Station ஆக்கிவிட்டோம் என்ற கோபமா? உன் கோபுரத்திற்கும் உயரமாக பல ஹோட்டல்கள் கட்டி கழிவறைகளும் படுக்கை அறைகளும் கட்டிவிட்டோம் என்ற கோபமா? ஆழ்ந்த அமைதியிலே ஞானத்தைத் தேடுவோரின் தியானத்தைக் கெடுத்துவிட்டோம் என்கிற கோபமா?
‘வனானாம் பதயே நமஹ’ என்று பிரதோஷம் தவறாமல் ருத்ரம் படித்துவிட்டு உனது காடுகளையும் அழித்து உன்னை ஏமாற்றிவிடலாம் என நினைத்தோமா?
‘அபர்ணானாம் பதயே நமஹ’ (இலைகளுக்கெல்லாம் அதிபதி) என்று உன்னைத்துதித்துவிட்டு இலைகளுக்கு மாற்றாக பிளாஸ்டிக் குப்பை சேர்த்த குற்றமா?
உனது உறைவிடமான பனிமலையை இராட்சத இயந்திரம் கொண்டு துளையிட்டு பனி இல்லாமல் செய்து விட்டார்களே என்று கோபம் அடைந்தாயா? நிர்மலமான சூழ்நிலையை மாற்றி தூசியும் துர்நாற்றமும் சேர்த்த குற்றமா? சொல் ஒன்று செயல் வேறு என்பது காலத்தின் கோலம்.
நீதானே கால தேவன்? ஏன் காலனாய் மாறினாய்?
ஏதோ தவறு செய்துவிட்டோம். இனியாவது அந்தத் தவறைத் திருத்திக்கொள்ளும் புத்தியை எங்களுக்குக்கொடு.
‘ம்ருத்யோர்மா அம்ருதம் கமய’ என்பது சத்திய வாக்கானால் இந்த அழிவிலிருந்து நன்னிலைக்கு அழைத்துச்செல்.
ஒலியும் நீயே எதிரொலியும் நீயே! மேகமும் நீயே, மழையும் நீயே, வெள்ளமும் நீயே அழிவும் நீயே என புரிந்து கொண்டோம்.
உன்னை அடி பணிகிறேம். நாங்கள் உன் குழந்தைகள்.
मानो महान्तमुतमानो अर्भकं मान उक्षन्तमुत मा न उक्षितम् ।
मानोवधीः पितरं मोत मातरं प्रिया मानस्तनुवो रुद्र रीरिषः ॥
ஸ்லோகத்தின் அர்த்தம்:
ஒ! பரமேஸ்வரா! எங்களின் வயது வந்தோர்களை நோயினால் வாட்டாதே. எங்கள் குழந்தைகளை வாட்டாதே. எங்கள் இளைஞர்களுக்கு இடையூறு செய்யாதே. கர்பத்திலிருக்கும் கருவை கலைக்காதே. எங்கள் தாய் தகப்பன்மார்களைப் பிரிக்காதே. எங்களைக்காப்பாற்று.
சிதானந்த ரூப: சிவோஹம் சிவோஹம்.

உன்னால் ஆட்கொண்ட தீனர்கள் ‘வாய்மை’ வாசகர்கள்.

What the world needs is more hard work, done in a spirit of sacrifice, of relinquishing one’s personal comforts to make others happy. Every being has truth, sweetness and Divinity embedded within them. Only they do not take the time to learn how to manifest that latent Divinity, how to realize the Truth and how to taste that innate sweetness. Hence people carry the twin burdens of joy and grief tied to the ends of a single pole slung across their shoulders. Courage is the tonic for getting health and strength, both physical and mental. Give up doubt, hesitation and fear. Never give any chance for these to strike root in your mind. Take the Name of your Favourite Lord and savour it on your tongue – it will help you give up fear and doubt. Through your own inner divine strength, you can achieve anything. You can become God, for sure! Keep the Name of the Lord always on your tongue and in your mind; it will help you give up fear and doubt.

This day, you may feel you have no need of the Lord, but remember, when the pangs of hunger gnaw, you start pining for food. Therefore, wash your hearts with tears of joy so that the Lord might install Himself therein. A zamindar may own all of the fields up to the very horizon on all sides, but he will choose to sit only on a patch that is clean! In the same way, when the Lord chooses the heart of a devotee, it does not mean that all other hearts are not His. They are only not clean enough. He is everywhere, everything is His, His gaze is on all. If God was not all this, how could they shine, or exist even as much as they do now? Therefore, have full faith in God and in yourselves, engage always in good deeds and beneficial activities; speak the truth, do not inflict pain by word or deed or even thought. That is the way to gain peace; that is the highest merit which you can earn in this life.

Nature “s Fury at Uttarakhand …Is It Because of Inviting the Wrath Of Goddess Dhari Devi ?

Uttarakhand’s raging rivers may have washed away entire towns but belief in the bizarre remains intact in the hill state.

Garhwal’s village folk, known for their childlike adherence to superstition, have now shifted the blame for the devastating flash floods and landslides of last week to the act of shifting the idol of Dhari Devi from its riverine home in the middle of the Alaknanda at Srinagar.

Dhari Devi is an avatar of Kali, and is widely believed to be the guardian angel of Char Dham pilgrims. Dunked in the middle of a growing controversy related to its imminent submergence by the expansion of the under-construction Srinagar Hydropower Project, the idol was cut away from its base by employees of the Alaknanda Hydro Power Co. (AHPC) Ltd, a subsidiary of infrastructure giant GVK, and shifted out from the Dhari Devi temple at about 7.30 pm on Sunday, June 16, by priests and locals.

Lightning flashed and a thunderstorm broke even as the idol was being moved to its new location on a raised platform above the old temple. The Alaknanda was in spate soon after, devastating Srinagar as it raged and surged through the town.

Former secretary of the Dhari Devi temple committee Devi Prasad Pandey says, “By the evening, the temple was under knee-deep water. There were reports that heavy rainfall would take place in the night, so shifting the Dhari Devi statue was the only alternative left. We shifted the idol by 6.30 pm and had we not taken the step we would have failed to save the Dhari Devi statue, which would have also got swept away.”

10 kilometres downstream of the Dhari Devi temple, construction work of the 330 MW Alaknanda Hydro Power Project is underway. The project, which should have been completed by 2011, has faced tough opposition from local residents as well as the BJP. In 2012, BJP leaders, including L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley petitioned the prime minister against the project.

GVK was in 2006 tasked with completing the project that had remained frozen for the past two decades. Petitions filed in the Uttarakhand High Court and later in the Supreme Court had sought a stay on enhancement of the project from its originally planned 200 MW to 330 MW, a development that would submerge the temple. AHPC Ltd planned to save the temple by raising the temple on vertical beams.

The environment ministry had on May 7 issued a stop work notice on the temple’s relocation, revoking its order later the same month after criticism from the apex court which is yet to pronounce its final order on the issue.

VHP leader Ashok Singhal says: “People staged protest against the hydro-power project and opposed the idea of raising the statue. Despite this, the Dhari Devi idol was removed from her temple on June 16 and placed on the platform. The goddess exhibited her anger and Kedarnath and other parts suffered damage. Dhari Devi wanted to teach the atheists ruling this country a lesson and to tell them not to touch the Himalayas and its rivers.”

Professor Anand Kumar, sociologist, Jawaharlal Nehru University says: “In matters of faith there is no logic. And this has always been a source of anxiety. All over the world holy places have been shifted. At times changing river courses have flooded temples and mosques and they have been moved to different places. Nature’s supremacy has been accepted by all. But the shift of the Dhari Devi temple and the flood is mere coincidence.”

Professor Akhtar-ul Wasey, director of Zakir Hussain Institute of Islamic Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, agrees. He adds: “The most important thing to remember is the treatment meted out to the hills and nature. This had to happen. Beliefs have their own place and those who believe in them can stick with them. But this was a disaster in the making.”

Dhari Devi is a much-worshipped goddess of the region. Garhwalis say that the stone deity changes its countenance from that of a girl to a woman and then to an old lady as the day progresses. The legend of the temple has it that the idol was trapped against a rock near the village of Dharo during a flood and was found only when villagers heard it wailing. It was then that a divine voice directed them to install the idol there. That’s how the temple came into being.
