Dazzling….Never Before Seen Images From the Archives of National Geographic !!!

National Geographic has earned a reputation as the epicenter of some of the world’s finest photojournalism, but few people known that the renowned magazine also has built up a vast collection of unpublished breathtaking images over the years.

To mark the magazine’s 125th birthday this year, its editors launched a Tumblr account to highlight some of the hidden gems that for one reason or another have been lingering in its photographic vaults.

The project aptly named ‘FOUND’ is NatGeo’s photostream, culled from its sprawling treasury of unpublished vintage prints.

Among the previously unreleased photos are some true masterpieces, like the otherworldly sight of the Mayflower replica sailing into 1950s New York under the shadow of a zeppelin overhead, or the simple beauty of buckets of iron being transported to a steelworks in Romania in 1975 set against the dreamlike background of golden clouds fit for a Canaletto painting.

Other prints in the photographic backlog include a whimsical shot of women in 1960s London using compact mirrors to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II, and a print showing a group of teens horsing around on a sand dune in New Mexico back in the 50s.

The curator of the Tumblr account, young NatGeo designer Web Barr, explained that he chose this medium to release the once-forgotten images into the world in the hopes that a broad audience of people will be able to enjoy, appreciate and share them with others.

Barr compared the FOUND Tumblr to NatGeo’s Instagram account, which photographers working for the magazine use to upload pictures from the field.

To put the project together, Barr and a team of NatGeo staffers sifted through the magazine’s 11.5 million collection of prints, searching for unique, visually striking and slightly offbeat images that are in keeping with the magazine’s overall aesthetic.

After spending decades collecting dust in the storage, many of the forgotten prints lack even the most basic information, so the team behind FOUND are hoping to harness the power of the masses to fill those gaps.

Tumblr users are encouraged to provide information on any of the images, and the staffers behind the photostream say they have already received a lot of feedback. In the future, they plan to feature the stories behind individual prints.

Buffalo herd chases lion, by guide Carl Walker. Photographed at Zuka, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. A buffalo herd interrupted a mating pair of lions. The pride male took offense at this and attempted to charge the herd males. They were oblivious to his growling and paw-thumping and chased him off.

Knee-deep, by Dana Allen. If you are a Red Lechwe (Kobus leche) the flood waters of the Okavango are your friend. Not only do these antelope thrive on aquatic plant species but the knee-deep marshy water provides them with excellent protection from predators who are unable to match their speed and agility in this aquatic environment. Joke For The Day… “Shut Up You Idiot “!!!!

One day an out of work mime is visiting the zoo and attempts to earn some money as a street performer. However, as soon as he starts to draw a crowd, the zookeeper grabs him and forcefully drags him into his office.

The zookeeper then explains to the mime that the zoo’s most popular attraction, a gorilla, has died suddenly. The keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off. He offers the mime a job to dress up as the gorilla until they can get another one. The mime accepts.

The next morning, before visitors arrive at the zoo, the mime puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage. He discovers that it’s a great job. He can sleep all he wants, play and make fun of people and he draws bigger crowds than he ever did as a mime.

However, eventually the crowds tire of him and he gets bored just swinging on tires. He begins to notice that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the cage next to his.

Not about to lose the attention of the adoring crowd, he climbs to the top of his cage, crawls across a partition, and dangles from the top to the lion’s cage. Of course, this makes the lion furious, but the crowd loves it.

At the end of the day the zookeeper comes and gives the mime a raise for being such a good attraction as a gorilla.

Well, this goes on for some time. The mime keeps taunting the lion, the crowds grow larger, and his salary keeps going up. Then one terrible day when he is dangling over the furious lion, he slips and falls. The mime is terrified. The lion gathers itself and prepares to pounce. The mime is so scared that he begins to run round and round the cage with the lion close behind.

Finally, the mime starts screaming and yelling, “HELP! HELP ME!”, but the lion is quick and pounces. The mime soon finds himself flat on his back looking up at the angry lion when he suddenly hears the lion whisper: “Shut up you idiot! You wanna get us both fired?”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are many, who are conscious of the Higher Power and are feebly desirous of contacting it, but are wavering and unsteady. They are either ignorant of the path and its benefits or are afraid of the consequences – my message is for such half-apathetic devotees. First learn the art of living in the midst of all kinds of people, so you neither grieve nor make others grieve. Make the best use of the opportunities you are gifted with to acquire wisdom, and derive and spread joy. Learn from the saints, the eternal wisdom and profit from it. Then, spread noble thoughts and good impulses and grow spiritually.

They are known for being aggressive predators, willing to attack and kill humans.

But as this picture shows, brown bears are also ever so slightly vain.

This young bear was caught out gazing at its own reflection in a Finnish lake

Funny: The photographer said the bear appeared to keep looking at his reflection as he made his way around the water's edge

Youthful: It is thought the curious bear is only about two or three years old

These pictures show the brown bear repeatedly stooping to stare at himself, unaware that photographer Sylwia Domaradska is hiding just yards away.

She captured the pictures in Kainuu, eastern Finland, where there is almost 24-hour daylight during the summer months.

The 37-year-old from London said: ‘It totally felt like a dream. It was almost difficult to see where the reflections were starting.

‘The bear turned up at around midnight. He came very quietly along the water’s edge looking for food.

‘It was a fairly young bear, perhaps two or three years old. He was very cautious as at this age he’d need to be careful about females with cubs, and other males.

‘He seemed to look at his own reflection – as he stayed in the same place for a while.’

Miss Domaradska said when the bear began moving around the edge of the lake he continued looking in.

‘It really was quite amusing to see – and then he was gone,’ she said.

‘The conditions were absolutely perfect for this kind of image.

‘The reflections were perfectly still and the line between the reflections and actual trees being reflected created very little blur.

‘I had actually gone out with the intention of taking a different image. I was hoping to see bears bathing and splashing in the water but instead, this happened.

‘But it didn’t turn out too bad, did it?’

A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

“Listen,” said the CEO, “this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?”

“Certainly,” said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

“Excellent, excellent!” said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. “I only need one copy.”

A young businessman had just started his own firm. He’d rented a beautiful office and had it furnished with antiques.

Sitting there, he saw a man come into the outer office. Wishing to appear busy, the businessman picked up the phone and started to pretend he had a big deal working. He threw huge figures around and made giant commitments.

Finally, he hung up and asked the visitor, “Can I help you?”
The man said, “Sure. I’ve been asked to install the phone line.”

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked the young MBA fresh out of MIT, “And what starting salary were you looking for?”

The candidate said, “In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.”

The HR Person said, “Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years – say, a red Corvette?”

The Engineer sat up straight and said, “Wow!!! Are you kidding?”

And the HR Person said, “Certainly, …but you started it.”

Indonesia Installing Goddess Saraswathi Statue @ Massachusetts !!!

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2B, at its monthly meeting last night, April 10, unanimously supported a request by the Embassy of Indonesia to erect a statue of a Hindu goddess on public space on Massachusetts Avenue NW. It also unanimously called on DC’s Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to improve its operating procedures and communication both with ANCs and with the public.

Statue of Saraswati on Public Space

The Commission heard a presentation by Heru Subolo, Minister-Counselor for Press and Information Affairs of the Embassy of Indonesia, asking for ANC support for a proposed statue of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts and science, to be erected on a public space next to the grounds of the Embassy at2020 Massachusetts Avenue NW.

Subolo told the committee that the statue had been approved by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Foreign Missions. Subolo also said that the planned site for the statue had been moved, at the request of the DC government’s Historic Preservation Office (HPO), from its original planned location at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and 21st Street (also adjacent to the Embassy), to a location next to the sidewalk further west along Massachusetts.

The location is currently fenced in. Subolo said that the fence would be removed to make the statue accessible to the public.

“I’m really happy to open up a fenced space,” said Kevin O’Connor, ANC commissioner for district 2B-02.

“This is a wonderful addition to our neighborhood and to our nation’s capital. Hindus across DC and around the world are ecstatic about this beautiful statue of Saraswati. It is so fitting that it will be installed just a stone’s throw from the also magnificent statue of Mahatma Gandhi — the only statue of a Hindu in DC,” said Kishan Putta, ANC 2B-04 commissioner.

one world trade center tower cloudes

Last month, the spire was installed on top of Manhattan’s One World Trade Center, bringing the new tower to its full height of 1,776 feet.

That was just tall enough to peek above the clouds for this photo, taken by Delta Airlines Captain Jerry Walsh. The Port Authority of NY & NJ posted the shot to Facebook yesterday.
