” This is Bill Gates”….

Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates took to Reddit on Monday for “Ask Me Anything” session and opened up on various topics ranging from tech to his philanthropic works to his favorite band, if you are wondering, it is U2.

This was his first AMA session, logging in as “this is billgates,” he fielded dozens of questions from Reddit users for several hours, sometimes buzzing in the follow-up threads to the approval of many participants. The unfiltered nature of Reddit AMA gave Gates a chance to put both his genius and wit on display to a crowd that consists largely of people just like him: geeks who are passionate about the Internet and technology.

The session revealed some of the secrets and some of the biggest regrets carried by the tech’s richest man, as  compiled by Mashable. Here are some excerpts…
Steve Jobs
On his relationship with Steve Jobs, Gates said “He and I respected each other. Our biggest joint project was the Mac where Microsoft had more people on the project than Apple did as we wrote a lot of applications. I saw Steve regularly over the years including spending an afternoon with him a few months before he tragically passed away.”
What Gates Would Have Been
His answer to what he would’ve done if Microsoft hadn’t taken off: “If the microprocessor had NOT come along I am not sure what I would have done. Maybe medicine or theoretical math but it is hard to say.”
He’s Funny
Gates showed his funnier and wittier side to some usual, some conflicting questions. When asked what do people give you for your birthday, given that you can buy anything you want? Gates said, “Free software. Just kidding. Books actually.” And when was asked a conflicting question about if he prefers Windows 7 or Windows 8, he replied: “Higher is better.”
And the thing that takes cream of the crop about Gates being funny is— “Since becoming wealthy, what’s the cheapest thing that gives you the most pleasure?” He replied “Kids. Cheap cheeseburgers. Open Course Ware courses,” and then obviously bewildered questioner asked “Where are you acquiring these cheap kids from?” Gates replied “The stork.”
His Regret
Cloud computing is a relatively recent phenomenon, but Gates had wanted to bring it mainstream a few years early with the 2007 release of Windows Vista. When asked what one Microsoft program or product that was never fully developed or released do you wish had made it to market? Gates said “We had a rich database as the client/cloud store that was part of a Windows release that was before its time. This is an idea that will remerge since your cloud store will be rich with schema rather than just a bunch of files and the client will be a partial replica of it with rich schema understanding.”
Gates was referencing WinFS, or Windows Future Storage. The idea behind WinFS was to integrate some relational database technologies with the Windows File System. In its early (codename “Cairo”) days, WinFS was key to Microsoft’s plans to create a true, object-oriented file store.
At one point, Microsoft was touting WinFS as one of the key components Windows Vista/Longhorn. Then the Longhorn reset happened and Microsoft ended up rolling out bits of WinFS as components of SQL Server and other database-focused deliverables.
He Still Codes

Gates left his job as Microsoft CEO years ago to devote himself full-time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but he still finds time to dabble in programming. When asked if he still codes, Gates replied, “Not as much as I would like to. I write some C, C# and some Basic. I am surprised new languages have not made more progress in simplifying programming. It would be great if most high school kids were exposed to programming”

Financial Lessons to Learn From Lord Ganesha !!!!

Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the god of prosperity and symbol of happiness. It is believed that any activity started by worshipping lord Ganesha will bring good results and will be successful. Lord Ganesha’s appearance teaches many things along with some financial tips which people often forget and put themselves into wrongful financial situations. Hiral Thanawala in InvestmentYogi.com discusses 11 financial lessons which you can learn from lord Ganesha.
1. Big Head of ‘Gajanana’

Though at times there is a little amount of risk involved experimenting with financial planning but there are safe ways in which one can explore their options and start thinking differently. Each and every problem has a solution to it. To find the solution one just need to be calm and analyze the situation.
2. Small Eyes of “Gajakarna”
The small and sharp eyes of Ganesha symbolize to have concentration. Any work or plan where there is lack of concentration cannot be successful. Your financial planning also needs proper concentration and need you to think all the risk and gain factors involved. Ask questions to your self before you take any decision. Concentrate on smallest of small details and take note of each and every pros and cons of the step you are about to take. After setting your goals, you need to prioritize them according to their importance.
3. Large Ears of “Lambakarna”
The large ears of “Lambakarna” which means “Large Eared Lord” and symbolizes to listen carefully and keep you years open always. You should know what is going on in the financial markets and what the new innovations are. Also listen to your financial advisors. Often people tend to take their financial decisions on their own in order to save a little amount they have to pay to the advisors. But at times in order to save little money they end up incurring a huge loss.
Still in case you do not feel like consulting an advisor, collect information on your own. There are many articles on internet as well as Television which can help you to know better market trends and take proper decisions.
4. Small Mouth of “Gajavaktra”
At times it is said that actions speak better than words, but few wrong words may make bigger and a very wrong impression than your actions. Lord Ganesha’s small mouth reminds that one should think before they speak anything. Your words portray your personality, you need to listen more and talk less while planning your financial plans. More over it is not always safe to discuss your financial plans with every body as they might provide you some wrong information. Talk only those things which will help you to gain further knowledge and help in making strong financial decisions.
5. One Tusk of “Ekadanta” or “Ekadrishta”
Ganesha’s one tusk symbolizes that you should keep the good and throws the bad. It conveys that keep studying your investments on regular period of time. Your financial matters need to be handled with care for which you need to have patience. Impulsive decisions may often make you take wrong decisions which will further causing you more damage. Once an investment done doesn’t mean your job is over. You need to be efficient and keep checking the prospects on regular intervals.
7. Large Stomach of “Lambodara”
Ganesha”s big stomach conveys that one should be able to digest all good and bad phases of financial decisions. It is not always necessary that you investments will only generate profits. At times they may incur losses too. It such situations one should be able to digest the bad upcoming and find out solutions to handle the problem wisely. You should identify what went wrong wile making the decision and take a note that it should not be repeated any more.
8. Right foot over left foot
Ganesha keeps his right foot over left foot when ever he is seen in sitting posture. This posture symbolizes using knowledge and reason to overcome emotions. One should never take their financial decisions emotionally. Money matters are acute mathematics and are based on strong reasons; decisions related to these should also be taking in such a way. You should have a strong base of financial knowledge to relay your decisions on them. You can read books or go through internet articles on financial issues.
9. Axe
The lord of all Ganas (Gods), Ganesha holds an axe in one of his hands in order to shed off all the bonds and attachments. It means that you should not put all your money and make investments only in one company or one type of investments. This is because different companies and investments perform differently according to the market conditions and investing only in one company increases your risk. Therefore it is suggested by financial advisors to invest in different companies as well as different type of investments.
10. Mouse at Akhuratha’s Feet
“Moshak” or mouse is considered as Ganesha’s ride. Akhuratha means the lord who has mouse as his charioteer. If you are capable of following all the suggestions devotedly, you will definitely get your reward. You financial decisions cannot go wrong and you will always live a healthy and care free life.

Inspiring Story of a School Dropout …

Dr. Kathiresan – MA.(history ),     M.A. ( Political History ),
M.Ed. ,                  M.Phil,
Ph.D.                    B.L.

V Kathiresan had to drop out of school to support his family. Years later, working for A P J Abdul Kalam as his driver, he was encouraged to restart his education.

Today he has a PhD, has written two books, and is a college Professor.

Anything is possible or shall we say nothing is impossible. V Kathiresan’s story proves that. This school dropout, who used to work as a driver for A P J Abdul Kalam, ensured that his dream turned into a reality at the age of 47.

A native of Vadachennimalai in Tamil Nadu, Kathiresan has come a long way with sheer determination. From being a school dropout, he went on to complete a PhD in history and was appointed a lecturer at the Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Vadachennimalai last year.

“I can never forget the role played by Kalamayya (sahib). I worked as a driver with him for five-and-a-half-years and during those long drives, I used to talk to him about my aspirations and dreams.”
“One day while driving, Ayya suggested that I should resume my studies. He told me that the best way to go about it was through long distance education. Ayya used to lecture several students about the importance of education. I used to listen to him speak and got inspired.
It wasn’t easy for Dr Kathiresan. After working at a 10 to 6 job, he would come home and study to catch up on all those lost years. His struggle against the odds has become an example for his students. Santhosh Mani, a student at the college, says his teacher’s story is like a fairy tale. “We complain so much about work load and the other burdens of life,” says Mani. “Today I look up to him and tell myself that anything is possible. It is just a matter of dedication and effort.”

Dr Kathiresan lost his father very early in life and had no choice but to support his family. Though he was always fond of studying, financial problems compelled him to drop out of school. “It was one of the most painful decisions of my life, but I accepted it as a way of life.”

He trained as an electrician and joined the Indian Army in 1979. His first posting was in Bhopal, then Sikkim followed by Hyderabad.
He first met A P J Abdul Kalam at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory in the 1980s. Kalam was DRDO’s director at the time and Kathiresan was deputed as his driver.

I must thank the Almighty that I was given such an opportunity,” says Dr Kathiresan. “If not for Kalamayya’s inspirational words, I would have never been able to achieve this. Even after Ayya left DRDO, I continued to ponder over what he said about the importance of education.”

He started working towards completing his school education. He appeared for the Class X and then Class XII examinations privately and obtained a BA from Madurai Kamraj University through distance education. He then went on to do an MA in political science.
“I noticed that as the days passed, the urge to pursue higher studies started creeping into my system. I did my BEd followed by an MEd from Madras University and then an MPhil from Kamraj University. I then did law and finally a PhD from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.”

In 2001, he passed the teachers’ recruitment exam, and was selected on merit. His first assignment as a teacher was at Kovilpatti where he worked for eight years. Apart from this he has written four books on history and a travel guide for the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.

“After completing my PhD, I called Ayya and told him that I had got a job also. The kind words and the appreciation that he gave me are more important than anything else in this world. He had faith in me and I did not let him down.”

Dr Kathiresan cannot forget the role his wife Kasthuri played in his entire struggle. A teacher herself, she was a rock through his difficult times. The couple have decided to ensure that their son Raghavan, who is in Class XII, gets sound academic grooming.

Grateful that he had Kalam as a mentor he now wants to help other students who have not had a chance to complete their education. “I would be only too glad if I could pass this on to several students who have the urge to learn and strive to be the best.”

Class 7 Student…A Tech Whiz…

S. Arjun

S. Arjun

School boy S. Arjun whose school bus locator app has won him the MIT App Inventor award

By inventing a school bus locator app (Ez School Bus Locator), S. Arjun, a class VII student of Velammal Vidyashram, Surapet, has done his school and family proud. Winner of the MIT App Inventor contest in the K-8 division, Arjun’s app was considered “one of the most creative and well thought out app of any age group.”

Arjun began dabbling with technology at the age of two. “Back then, I had been using programming software meant for kids. Later on, when I wanted to make more powerful applications, I started looking out for other tools. After mastering Logo and Scratch sometime back, I tried exploring Visual Basic on my own and started on a few basic applications,” he says.

His father suggested MIT App Inventor as a place to learn programming when he stumbled upon the contest. “It was two weeks before the submission date and I put in extra effort to finish it in time to submit. My parents helped me in the technical and design aspects of creating the app,” he adds, “I decided on a school bus locator because my parents were so worried when my school bus was late one day. This disturbed me and I wanted to find a solution that would make things easier for them. I hope to come up with more solutions to help keep our world safe.”

The Ez School Bus Locator is a two-app solution that uses a bar code scanning to check in and out from the bus and GPS to track the vehicle. There are even SMS alerts to keep parents informed. “This will help parents track their children on bus rides and it supports both Android phones and those that have no Internet facility,” Arjun explains.

He has already approached his school, which has agreed to run it as a pilot programme. “I had presented this app to my school management and they have been very supportive. They have agreed to run it this academic year and then, implement it as a full-fledged service the next academic year onwards.”

Ez School Bus Locator was also featured as the Mashup of the Day on Programmable Web, the world’s largest API and Mashup directory. “My first priority is to make this app available on the Google Play Store. I’m also getting ready for the pilot implementation in school. I also just started working on my dream project — starting my own company (on a small scale right now),” Arjun adds.

With his interests spanning robotics, electronics and badminton, Arjun dreams of becoming a Robotics engineer someday. “I practice robotics programming using my robotics kit when I find time.”

Smart Kids From Smart Countries !!!!!

source:::::businessinsider.com

Natarajan

Education and smartness go hand in hand, whether bookish or practical education. Education is thus the most important factor for the development of any country. Check how the following ten countries produce some of the world’s smartest generations of kids for their nation’s future, as listed by Business Insider

Netherland

smart

Children in Netherland come under the Dutch Law of compulsory education from the ages five to eighteen. Most international schools in Netherland are subsidized by the Dutch Ministry of education. Primary education in Netherlands is mainly based on measure to measure curricula. A lot of responsibility is taken in standardized testing and the results that are achieved.

Denmark

smart

Though preschool is optional, education for nine years is compulsory in Denmark. This compulsory education for children is provided according to national standards. This can take place at home, in a private school or in a public folkeskole and it lead its students to follow an adequate range of subjects. Teachers in Denmark are made to follow a unified system in training of approximately four years.

England

smart

The English Educational system places a lot of importance in the assessment and testing of pupils where they are compulsorily tested at the ages of seven, eleven and fourteen years with a special emphasis on Mathematics and English. The curriculum in schools is set by guidelines provided by the government which mainly aims in raising the standards of its children.

United Kingdom

smart

The education system in the U.S offers its kids a wealth of experiences. Education in England is compulsory and free for all kids aged from five to sixteen. The structure of elementary education in the U.S provides a greater emphasis on group work, guided play and creative activity. The early years of a child’s education focus on numeracy and literacy with no importance given to special subjects.

United States

smart

Teachers of elementary schools in the U.S receive training which emphasizes on human cognition, principles of curriculum development, psychological development and instruction. Schools in the U.S do not have a national curriculum and students are not burdened with preparation for any national examinations.

Russia

smart

Like Singapore, this too is a country that places a lot of concern for education. With education being coordinated by the state, it is made compulsory for all children attend school up to the ninth grade. The curriculum is based on the requirements of the state. In fact, the literacy rate in Russia is almost a hundred percent. Education in Russia plays a very important role in the country’s social status

Finland

smart

This is not surprising, doubt, with Finland having the best education system in the world. With kids starting to attend school at the age of seven and being prevented from the pressures of homework and exams till well into their teens, Finland’s students face the least pressure of academic performance. With a seventy five minute break each day, Finnish students have climbed very close to the top in science, mathematics and reading. The curriculum of Finland’s education system includes nothing but broad guidelines for students.

China

smart

Have you ever wondered how tough schooling in China can be? With school starting at 7.45 and finishing at 4.45 , extra classes lead it to 6.45. With classes from Monday to Friday it can extend to Saturday and Sunday too. Homework keeps most children up till ten. A higher focus is placed to mathematics among schools in China.

Hong Kong

smart

Students in Hong Kong are exposed to a mixture of Chinese and Western cultures. Apart from this they are also exposed to diverse opportunities in education. The education system of Hong Kong has, over the years gone through a lot of reform and focuses more on the importance of early childhood education. This could be a reason why kids in Hong Kong score high in Science, math, reading and literacy.

Singapore

smart

Do you want to know why these kids are so smart? It is because Singapore has an obsession with education. Being one of the world’s toughest meritocracies, Singapore’s education system today has produced the world’s smartest kids. Apart from this, kids in Singapore are made to follow strict discipline and they enter a stream before they are ten years old. This obsession with education is felt everywhere, from Singapore’s two dollar bill that portrays a professor facing his students to headlines in the media which cover students having excelled in education. A reason for this could be that Singapore, being a poor country in the past with no resources and hence no much opportunity for exports , had to rely on its education system ,thanks to which it is one of the ninth richest country in the world today.

Srinivasa Ramanujan….Maths. Wizard !!!

New Delhi: Celebrating Srinivasa Ramanujan’s 125th birthday, Google posted a doodle on its homepage. The doodle features a boy trying to solve some mathematical equations and geometrical figures, which form the letters of the word ‘Google’. But who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?

Born on 22 December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. He was an autodidact. Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, Srinivasa Ramanujan came up with his own mathematical research in isolation.

Ramanujan was born in a poor Hindu Brahmin family. His introduction to formal mathematics began at age 10. He demonstrated a natural ability. By the age of 12, he mastered books on advanced trigonometry written by S. L. Loney. Ramanujan discovered theorems of his own

On 14 July 1909, Ramanujan got married to Janaki Ammal, a ten-year old bride.

In 1912-1913, he sent out samples of his theorems to three academics at the University of Cambridge. His brilliance was recgonised and he was invited to visit and work at Cambridge. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

On 26 April 1920, Ramanujan died of illness, malnutrition, and possibly liver infection at the age of 32.

In December 2011, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 2012 as the ‘National Mathematical year’ as a tribute to maths wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan. Singh also declared December 22, the birthday of Ramanujan, as ‘National Mathematics Day.’

“A genius like Ramanujan would shine bright even in the most adverse of circumstances, but we should be geared to encourage and nurture good talent which may not be of the same calibre as that of Ramanujan”, Singh had once said.

It is believed that a biography of Ramanujan named “The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan,” written by Professor Robert Kanigel has made Ramanujan well known to the public at large all over the world.

Message For The Day… Remember The God with Love ….

Lord Jesus Christ gave the following example while teaching His fishermen disciples: ‘In a river the water is flowing in a swift current. But the tiny fishes are able to swim in it and move about merrily, despite the speed of the current. In the same river, a huge elephant caught in the rapids, is likely to get washed away or drowned in spite of its enormous size. The elephant just cannot survive there! The reason is: What you need for survival in a river is not being large, but the ability to swim. Likewise a person who is caught up in the ocean of worldly existence needs, not so much metaphysics, scholarship or wealth, as much as the grace of Divine love.’ Without any knowledge of Vedanta, one can still surmount all the problems of life if one is blessed with God’s love. Hence, remember the Lord with Love, worship Him with Love and sanctify your life with Love.
