The Excuse

After a weekend vacation, the seargent got to the military base only to find out that none of his soldiers made it on time. It took 3 hours before they started showing up. By then he was about to explode with rage.

He decided to summon each of them to his office and get an explanation.

The first soldier walks in, and the seargant asks: “Well, what’s your excuse for showing up so late?”

“Sorry, sir! I can explain! You see, I was late for the bus and had to hitchhike, no cars stopped, and then suddenly, an old man driving a horse and buggy stops and offers me a ride! Well, you know, I couldn’t refuse the man’s kind gesture, and I got on, only it took forever to get here, and that’s why I was late!”

“hmmph,” said the surprised Seargant, “I guess that’s a reasonable explanation.” and he let the soldier go.

He called the next soldier in and asked for his excuse.

“Sorry, sir! I can explain! You see, I was late for the bus and had to hitchhike, then this old woman with a horse and carriage stopped for me…” and the soldier tells him the same story, that he was late because the buggy was so slow.

One after another, all the soldiers file in and tell him the exact same story.

The last soldier than walks in, and the seargant, now quite annoyed, says: “I suppose you hitch-hiked too?”

“Yes sir!”

“And I suppose you also got a ride?”

“Yes sir!”

“And I suppose it was on a horse and buggy?”

“No sir!”

“No?” asked the surprised Seargant.

“No sir, it was a 2012 Mercedes, sir!”

“Then why the heck were you late??” Shouted the searganet.

“We tried to make good time sir,” answered the soldier, “but the road was completely blocked with horses and buggies!”

Just as you attend to the needs of the body regularly, feeding it three times a day to keep it in good running condition, so too spend some time regularly to keep your inner consciousness in good trim. Spend one hour in the morning, another at night and the third in the early hours of the dawn (the Brahma Muhurtha) for japam (contemplation) and meditation on the Lord. You will find great peace descending upon you and new sources of strength welling up within as you progress in this spiritual practice (Sadhana). After sometime, the mind will dwell on the Name, wherever you are and whatever you are engaged in. Peace and Joy will become your inseparable companions.

There is a story about a man who sold hot dogs by the roadside. He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers . He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio. His eyes were weak, so he never watched television. But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hot dogs. His sales and profit went up. He ordered more meat and got himself a bigger and a better stove. As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from college, joined his father. Then something strange happened. The son asked, “Dad, aren’t you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?” The father replied, “No, but tell me about it.” The son said, “The international situation is terrible. The domestic is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad time.” The man thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, and listened to the radio, he ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly. So the next day, the father cut down his order for the meat and buns, took down the sign and was no longer enthusiastic. Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his hot dog stand. And his sales started coming down rapidly. The father said to his son, “Son, you were right. We are in the middle of a recession. I am glad you warned me ahead of time.”What is the moral of the story?

You must earn your birthright, which is Peace (Shanthi). Restlessness (ashanthi) is an unnatural state. To recover this heritage of peace, people try many methods – accumulation of riches, maintenance of good health, mastery of knowledge, cultivation of arts, etc. All these are not fundamental. Three basic needs remain even after all these methods are exhausted – the need for Truth, Light and for Immortality. It is only when these are won that Peace will be permanently established.

நான் திண்டிவனம் பள்ளிக்கு சென்று பெரியவா படித்ததற்கு அடையாளமாக ஏதாவது கிடைக்குமா என்ற ஆர்வத்தில் தலைமை ஆசிரியரின் அனுமதியுடன் பழைய ரெக்கார்ட்கள் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த அறையை துழாவினேன். அதிசயத்திலும் அதிசயமாக ஒரு வருகை பதிவேட்டின் ஒரே ஒரு காகிதம் மட்டும் கிடைத்தது. அது 1904 ஆம் வருடம், பெரியவா ரெண்டாம் பாரம் படித்தபோது, அந்த வகுப்பின் வருகை பதிவேட்டின் ஒரு ஷீட்.

அதில் ‘சுவாமிநாதன்’ என்ற பெயரை கண்டபோது எனக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி நிலைகொள்ளவில்லை. மறுநாளே, ஆந்திராவில் இருந்த பெரியவாளை தரிசிக்க சென்றேன்.

நடுநிசி, பூர்ண நிலா, பெரியவா ஓர் ஊரில் இருந்து வேறோர் கேம்ப் க்கு மேனாவில் பயணித்து கொண்டிருந்தார். கூடவே ஓடி, திண்டிவனம் சென்ற விவரத்தையும், ‘வருகை பதிவேடு’ காகிதம் கிடைத்த செய்தியையும் கூறினேன். சற்று தொலைவு சென்றதும் மேனா நின்றது. உடன் வந்தவர்களையும் மேனாவை தூக்கி வந்தவர்களையும் ஆகாரம் செய்து விட்டு, வரும்படி பணித்துவிட்டு, பெரியவா அந்த வருகை பதிவேட்டு ஷீட்டை வாங்கி டார்ச் லைட் லென்ஸ் உதவியோடு பார்த்தார். முகம் மலர்ந்தது.

இது எப்படிடா உனக்கு கிடச்சுது? என்று ஆச்சரியத்துடன் கேட்டு விட்டு, அதில் இருந்த பெயர்களை ஒவ்வொன்றாக படித்தார். அறுபத்து நான்கு வருடங்கள் முந்தய நாட்களின் நினைவுகளில் ஒரு கணம் மூழ்கி போனார். தம்முடன் ரெண்டாம் பாரத்தில் படித்த மாணவர்களை நினைவு கூர்ந்தார்.

அவர்களில் யார் யார் அப்போது உயிருடன் இல்லை என்பதையும் மற்றவர்கள் எந்த ஊரில் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதையும் சொன்னார்.

இறுதியாக, ‘என் பேர் எல்லோருக்கும் கடைசிலே இருக்கே, பெரியவா படிப்பிலே ‘மக்கு’ ன்னு நீ நெனச்சியோ?’ என்று சிரித்துக்கொண்டே கேட்டார்.

‘இல்லே, பெரியவா பேர் ஏன் கடைசிலே இருக்குன்னு நெனச்சிண்டேன்’ என்ற உண்மையை சொன்னேன்.

‘என் பூர்வாச்ரம தகப்பனாருக்கு ஸ்கூல் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் உத்தியோகம். அடிக்கடி அவரை, ஊர் மாத்திடுவா. சிதம்பரத்திலேருந்து திண்டிவனத்துக்கு செப்டம்பர் மாசம் மாத்தலாயி வந்தார். பாதியிலே வந்து இந்த ஸ்கூல் லே சேர்ந்தேன். அதனால தான் என் பேரு கடைசிலே இருக்கு’ என்று விளக்கம் தந்தார்.
