Message For the Day…” You Will Be Successful With The Blessings of Your Mother…”

Abraham Lincoln learnt to speak truth and conduct himself with self-respect and dignity, unafraid of his financial position, from the lap of his mother. When little Abraham shared with his mother that he was disrespected and felt ashamed in the midst of his friends for wearing old and shabby clothes, she told him that he need not feel so. She counselled him that poverty, though viewed in poor light by others, will eventually help him gain respect. Lincoln later in his life declared, “You may disrespect me, but truth cannot be disrespected. It will emerge triumphant!” He proceeded on the path of truth and self-confidence taught by his mother and became the President of the United States of America. In fact, anyone who has the blessing of their mother will emerge very successful.

” Wear Your Seat Belt… We Will Bless You … “

How do you make a mundane yet important message sticky? How do you remind reckless drivers of the basic safety instructions they had forgotten? By jazzing things up a bit.

That’s exactly where The Seatbelt Crew steps in: a group of eunuchs, dressed as air crew members broadcasting the important message in their unique unforgettable fashion.

What is the Differnce Between ” Urgent ” & “Important ” ?

This post originally appeared on the ” iDoneThis blog.”  …..

Whenever I realize I’ve been running ragged, I know I’ve fallen into a rut of reactive rather than proactive work. Instead of going about my day steered by plans and intentions, the unstable “whatever comes up” gets to dictate my day.

This schedule of working deadline to deadline, fighting fires and flying by the seat of your pants racks up time debt. You’re borrowing from other areas of your life like spending time with your family or on your wellbeing.

Humans tend to be bad at understanding how we’ll feel in the future. In our mind’s Pollyannaish eye, the future is a world of order and excellence in which you exercise everyday, you don’t bring work home with you, you finally learn Spanish, you catch up with that friend you haven’t spoken to in forever. In reality, something always comes up, there is always something to do.

Urgent vs. Important

The problem is th

at we mistake urgency for importance. “Do this now” is easy to understand and follow, and if something’s urgent, shouldn’t it be done sooner than later?

Let’s go back to the very basics and look at definitions. “Urgent” means “requiring immediate action or attention.” “Important” means “of great significance or value; likely to have a profound effect on success, survival, or well-being.” Why are we confusing immediateness with worth?

Mistaking what’s urgent for what’s important comes at the cost of our profound goals and values. Smart prioritization requires clearer vision.

This distinction between urgent and important, of course, is nothing new. Stephen Covey popularized this idea in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People with the time management matrix, which is divided into four quadrants: 1. Urgent and important, 2. Not urgent but important, 3. Urgent but not important, and 4. Neither urgent nor important.

urgent important The difference between urgent and important

  • You have to deal with Quadrant 1 tasks, which are integral to keep going.
  • Quadrant 2 — the important but not urgent stuff — is the one to cultivate. Covey even explains, “Quadrant 2 is the heart of effective personal management.”
  • Many people get stuck in Quadrant 3 —vanity work and tasks that feel important, often by request, order, or some external directive.
  • Quadrant 4 activities are the trivial and the useless.

Covey’s prioritization method is also called the Eisenhower matrix for a similar decision-making principle that supposedly guided Dwight D. Eisenhower — that “What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”

In a way, this simplifies the matrix even further — focus on what’s important.

urgent important chart The difference between urgent and important

Urgency plays tricks on your mind, and you end up spending time doing things at the expense of more valuable activities. Emails, for example, will always seem more urgent and important than they probably ever are. It’s wiser to trust in importance as your true north.

Here’s one way to navigate to your true north:

1. Figure out what matters

Spend some time to ascertain what really matters to you. What do you find significant and valuable? How will you contribute towards your success and well-being?

What’s been nagging in your mind but you never seem to get around to doing it? Maybe it’s spending more time with your parents, reading more books, or doing something creative. Maybe it’s learning a skill, volunteering, or meditation.

Some activities are less fun and fulfilling but still valuable, like finally getting to the doctor for a check-up, setting up a monthly budget, planning out next week so you’re not running around like a headless chicken.

Sometimes important things are just not the easy choice. Saying no to the non-important stuff can be hard, and it’s often harder to say no to other people than to say no to yourself.

Learning to delegate, to let things go, and to make peace with that letting go is surprisingly difficult and can take constant practice.

2. If something is important, assign a time for it

There are two simple ways to set yourself up for Quadrant 2 activities.

Assign concrete deadlines for decision and specific, discrete tasks you’d like to do, such as applying for a fellowship or doing some research to plan a vacation.

Behavioral economist Dan Ariely explains why this works, “[D]eadlines allow us to clarify our thoughts and create an action plan. They are good at getting people to perform a particular act, like submitting a grant proposal.”

Set a schedule to meet your goals if you want to establish a good habit, something you’d like to do regularly, like eat healthy, exercise, read more, practice your writing, learn a new skill. Doing little by little consistently, you’ll build up a practice.

Even though we’re bad at forecasting, psychologist Dan Gilbert believes the human “ability to look into the future and think about what will make us most happy is the way we get to a present that pleases us.”

When we can see clearly and focus on what is important and meaningful, it’s so much easier to enjoy the present.

Laughter The Best Medicine… ” Very Cool Grandpa… ” !!!

The Very Patient Grandpa…

I was walking through the local supermarket the other day when I saw a grandfather walking around with his 2 year old grandson. It was obvious that the grandpa wasn’t having an easy time of it, with the siren-like voice of his cherished youngling scaling upwards every time candy or toys came into view.

The grandfather, however, kept his cool, and intoned softly to the child: “Ron, relax, it won’t take long.”

When the screaming didn’t stop, the grandpa continued: “Ron, there’s no reason to get angry, try to enjoy this walk and in a minute we’ll be on the way home, promise.”

child crying
When I came out of the store I saw them in the parking lot, the child screaming and the older man still talking softly and quiety to him. I couldn’t help myself. I walked over to him.

“Sir,” I said, “I have to say you are an amazing grandfather. The way you talk to the boy and keep your calm despite all of this screaming – Ron’s a lucky kid to have a grandpa like you.”

“Thanks,” said the grandfather, “but I’m Ron. This little bugger’s name is Michael.”

Message For The Day…” Realize That Your Peace Depends On the Peace of Those Around You …”

God is love and He is pleased with the pure hearted who love Him 100%. Make every effort to experience the indweller (Dehi) within the body (deha). The Dehi (Divine Soul) within you is immortal with no birth or death. Don’t forget that you are alive due to His Grace. You must necessarily do your bit to take care of your body without being attached to it. Always keep in view the Dehi within, connect with Him and discharge your duties. At the end of every day or every meeting, pray, “May all the beings in all the Worlds be happy” (Samasta Loka Sukhino Bhavanthu). Realize that the individual peace depends on the peace of those around you. Therefore always pray for the wellbeing and peace of everyone in the Universe.

Message For the Day…” What is Sacrifice …? “

The wellbeing of countries and even the universe depends upon morality. Without morality, nations will be ruined. There may be many people who use education and influence to earn money, but truly great people have upheld the highest morality in their lives. You must be prepared to sacrifice. Sacrifice does not mean relinquishing your possessions. It means working really hard to earn a good name in the society you live in and bringing a good name to where you were raised. Your good name will last longer, and it will be eternal and permanent only with sacrifice. Scriptures explain the supremacy of sacrifice declaring, ‘sacrifice alone leads one to immortality’ (Tyagenaike Amrutathwa Manuashuhu).

Message For the Day…” Our Heart is Like a Piece of Land to be Cultivated with Care and Love…”

To cultivate a piece of land, the farmer works really long and hard. First, he has to soften the entire piece of land. He must then plough it, sow the seeds and water it regularly. After that, the crop has to grow to a certain stage, and to aid that, he needs to use fertilizers and remove the weeds at regular intervals. Only after all this, will he be able to bring home the food grains. That is exactly what we have to do with our hearts too. The heart is like a piece of land to be cultivated, and we must cultivate it with utmost care and concern. It must be watered with the water of love. Using the plough of enquiry, you must plough it and sow the seed of the Name of God, and then guard it very vigilantly using the fence of caution and care. You must protect it with egolessness, then you will receive the fruit of love.

Message For the Day…” Respect and Revere Your Parents…”

Humility alone makes you deserving and affluent, and eventually helps you attain Divinity. You must also, always respect and revere your parents and consider the education and all the facilities they have provided as their gift to you. Many parents suffer a great deal of stress and strain to provide these to you. At times, they may even fast to pay your fees and bills. Scriptures clearly declare, ‘Mother is God, Father is God, Teacher is God, Guests are Divine, Teacher is Divine (Mathru Devo Bhava, Pithru Devo Bhava, Athithi Devo Bhava, and Acharya Devo Bhava). Your good character will be understood only when you are humble and respect your parents. Many people have lived these values in an exalted manner. Those with humility and obedience to parents will achieve great success in all spheres of life.

Message For The Day…” The One Who transforms Mind, Attains Divinity…”

People practice various forms of worship and rituals following their family tradition and culture. However they do not transform even a bit in spite of months and years of spiritual practice. Frustrated, they change the Name they are chanting, because they are tired of waiting for results. At times, people change not just the Name they chant, but also their religion. Know clearly that you cannot attain God’s Grace by changing the Name you chant or the religion. You must transform yourself. The dog in the home always recognizes its Master, no matter whether he or she wears a jogging dress, office uniform or party attire. It has no doubt about its Master, despite the dress worn. So too, you cannot convince God by merely changing your external appearance. You have to acquire virtues and conduct yourself righteously. Only the one who transforms the mind pleases the Lord and attains Divinity.
