Message For the Day…” Where is There is No Attachment, There will Be No Fear …”

Desire and disappointments are the order of the day. Human life for most people seems to be full of fear. Various types of fears haunt wherever one is, whatever one does. How can one escape fear? Even the little objects of happiness which one seems to derive from life, is coupled with fear of losing them soon! Sin and merit, joy and sorrow, profit and loss, light and darkness are pairs of opposites that every being undergoes during their lives. Truly speaking, the absence of one (sorrow), indicates the presence of other (joy)! Saint Adi Shankara further clarified, “Where there is no attachment, there will be no fear!” How can one attain that state? By attaining proximity with the Divine! He further exhorted, “Banish fear by cultivating detachment (Vairagya) and journeying towards the Self. It is through Self-Realization that you can understand the true nature of fear and overcome it.

Message For the Day…” Person of a Few Words will be Free From Enmity…”

The hard working farmer has no fear of starvation. The one who chants the Lord’s Name has no fear of worldly worries. The person of a few words will be free from enmity. Through excessive talk, people fall prey to quarrels. Everyone must cultivate moderation in speech. Restraint in speech is conducive to friendly feelings. The one who is careful in behavior, doing all actions after due deliberation, will have no fear of danger. True education consists in knowing how to lead a peaceful life. To embark on or have a successful career, you must aspire for world peace. For you are part of the world and your well-being is intimately tied to that of the world. Give up all narrow feelings and acquire unity and fellowship.

Do you wake up some mornings with a very stiff neck? There could be a variety of reasons for the intense pain, but before we get into the causes and symptoms, it’s important to understand some basic anatomy first.

The neck is located at the uppermost section of the spinal column. It contains seven sets of vertebrae, also known as cervical vertebrae. The neck contains many sensitive nerve endings, making it a powerful erogenous zone,

  • Sleeping in the wrong positions.
  • Pillows that don’t fully support the neck.

Recommended Treatments You Can Do At Home
Hot and Cold Therapy –  Heat therapy can be used to alleviate neck pain. There are two main types of heat therapy, which consist of dry heat and moist heat. Heating pads contain dry heat, while steamed towels constitute moist heat. Electric heating pads keep a constant heat level as long as they are fully charged. The therapeutic benefits of heat therapy help reduce joint pain, muscle spasms and arthritis, all common contributors of neck pain.
hot cold
You can begin the heat therapy process by applying a heating pad between 15 to 20 minutes every 2 or 3 hours. Ice packs may be applied to the neck for the same duration as the heating pad. The ice pack drastically reduces inflammation and soothes the affected areas. There are also single-use heat wraps that last up to 8 hours, which can be used as an alternative to heat pads.
Perfect Posture Exercise – Remember when your parents told you to stand up straight? There’s perfectly good reason behind that. Standing in an upright position greatly improves posture and spine health. There is an exercise you can perform at home to help build perfect posture:
Stand with your back against a wall, while keeping your heels just a few inches away. The heels are the only part of the body that does not come in contact with the wall. Walk away from the wall and back to check that your posture is upright. Repeat process throughout the day.
Isometric Neck Exercise – Isometric exercises play a vital role in maintaining a strong and healthy neck. This particular exercise is performed against the resistance of your neck, keeping your head in a static position. Here’s how to perform an isometric exercise:
Begin by sitting in a relaxed position with your hands touching your forehead. Your palms are used to resist the pressure, as you lean in towards your forehead. Place your right hand to the right side of your head, and let the left side resist the pressure being applied. Make sure you switch sides after.
The next step is to press both hands against the back of your neck, and resist your head from going backward. To complete the exercise, you’ll want to press your left hand against the right side of your face as you try to turn your head to look over your right shoulder. Don’t forget to switch sides.
Range-of-Motion Neck Exercise – In order to complete the range-of-motion exercise, you should slowly turn your head to the far right, pause a second, and return it to the center position. Do the same for the other side.
Drop your chin down slowly toward your chest, while holding for a brief static moment, then relax. You head should be back up in the center position now. Gently tilt your head toward your left shoulder, while holding for a moment, and gradually return to the center position.
Pillows Can Make the World of Difference – Last but not least, are pillows. There are certain pillows that are ideal for preventing neck pain. Water-filled pillows are used to alleviate neck pain, and give you a good night’s sleep.
Orthopedic pillows are used to support the curvature of your neck, whereas, water-filled pillows, support the neck by redistributing the weight. The main function of each pillow is to keep your neck in a neutral position when you sleep. Make sure you choose a comfortable and firm mattress as well.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Get a remedial massage
  • Go for a swim
  • Consider acupuncture treatment
  • Try aromatherapy as an alternative approach

Message For the Day…” Wherever You Go . The Divine Feet will Protect You…”

You may encounter any number of losses and difficulties in life. You may undergo a lot of suffering. But, you should never give up truth, faith and love. Loss, suffering and difficulties are like the waves in the ocean of life. They just come and go. But the water of the ocean is permanent. Hence develop the faith of ‘water’, i.e., Divinity. The power of the divine name is unparalleled. Do not take it lightly. God’s name is the real diamond. Keep it safe and secure. Do not ever be bothered by pain and suffering, losses and difficulties. Your thoughts are like the passing clouds. Once you seek refuge in the lotus feet of the Lord, never give it up. Wherever you go, the divine feet will protect you. If you install the divine name firmly in your heart, your life will become sanctified. That is devotion (bhakti). That is your power (sakthi). That is liberation (mukti).

Message For the Day…” Whatever You Think , Speak or Do, Consider it as the Command of God…”

While performing your duties in your house or outside, constantly remind yourself, “Whatever I do, think or speak, everything belongs to God.” The proper attitude should be, ‘Sarva karma Bhagavath preethyartham’. Take for example, the process of cooking. You add different ingredients to the dish being cooked in definite proportions and try to make them tasty. But the real taste comes only when the job of cooking is done as an offering to God. The food becomes divine when it is offered to God. On the other hand, if the various items are cooked with the attitude, ‘I am doing this job as a routine; I am cooking these items for my family members to partake’, it does not reach God. Hence undertake every act in your life as an offering to God, chanting His Name. Whatever you think, speak or do, consider it as God’s command, God’s work.

” Silence is the Thing, amid the Din…”

The noise and confusion that reigns in the world around us.
The noise and confusion that reigns in the world around us.

A French black-and-white silent movie, The Artist, won top honours at the Academy Awards in 2012. It had to happen. There is so much eloquence in silence. Remember the Charlie Chaplin genre of films? Are they coming back? I am no movie buff. But violence and noise are things humankind should shun. And silence being golden is a good break, and we are in dire need of it. The cacophony all around is killing.

We watch on television the noise and confusion that reigns in the world around us. Everybody has something to say but nobody wants to listen. There is zero tolerance.

We watch programmes on TV where the anchor and a panel of experts discuss and analyse issues. They begin nicely enough, but when the debate gets heated, sparks fly and everyone begins to talk simultaneously. Even the anchor has a problem controlling them. The one with most lung power out-speaks others. We are left numb.

Thank god we have the option of switching off the TV to get instant relief. Today’s music is also all noise. Where are the lyrics and the soft and soothing voices? Thank god for classical music — we still can listen to them and derive soul satisfaction.

I admire the silence of the West. Their neighbourhoods are so quiet. One can drink deep of such silence, especially when one is on a walk absorbing a lot of things. I love my India alright, but our strong point is not silence. We may well be one of the noisiest countries on the planet. In the bus, or in queues, in movies theatres, restaurants or even when they go for walks, people talk so loudly that they will wake up entire neighbourhoods — especially early in the morning. Now with dogs abounding on every street, if one dog starts barking, others follow it up with a chorus.

Even children don’t lag behind. I remember watching kids at play in a neighbourhood, abroad. There, like the adults the kids hardly ever scream or shout. Only Indian children scream their throats out.

This happened when I was once holidaying in the U.S. in Silicon Valley. A Japanese lady complained to the office of an apartment complex about an Indian family. The parents were off to work, and the grandparents had come for a holiday and they were teaching the kids slokas. Everytime the kids recited back what had been taught, the grandparents and the kids clapped with all their might, creating a ruckus.

The Japanese lady said: “That is the time my baby is fast asleep and my neighbours are yelling their heads off. The baby is startled into waking up and I am unable to finish my house work.” Being in the adjoining building, I too had heard the kids reciting the slokas and thought it to be laudable. The grandparents, I thought, were spending quality time with them, but they could have kept the decibel level low.

Once upon a time fire-crackers were lighted only during Deepavali. Now they are set off on birthdays, weddings, elections and what have you. Accompanying them on such occasions is loud film music. The world, as Wordsworth wrote, ‘is too much with us’. We are drowning in a welter of noise and other negative factors like road rage, violence, fisticuffs and streetfights. We see so much pent-up anger in people on a number of issues waiting to explode. The word ‘kolaveri’ said it all.

Remember the ‘Tower of Babel’ where people were shouting themselves hoarse in a diversity of tongues and nobody wanted to hear the other? We thought it was mythical, but no, it was real enough. All the chaos is back, it seems. As they say there is nothing new under the sun and history has a way of repeating itself. Things have to come full circle.

Message For the Day…” Chant the Divine Name of God …”

Human life is highly sacred, noble and divine. It should not be wasted in unworthy pursuits. Take to the sacred path and sanctify your time by chanting the divine name. There is no need to allocate a specific time or place for Namasmarana. You can do it wherever you are and whatever you are doing. One needs to pay tax for water, electricity, etc., but there is no tax for Namasmarana. Nobody can stop you from doing it. It is very simple, yet most effective. Many people do not realise its immense value as it is so easy to practise. They think incorrectly that God can be attained only through severe austerities. Chant the divine name without troubling yourself or causing trouble to others. Cultivate love for God. Do not criticise or ridicule anybody. Give happiness to all by sharing your love selflessly. This is true spiritual practice. Follow this simple path, experience ananda and sanctify your lives.

Sathya Sai Baba

Message For the day…” Namasankirtan Must be done with Absolute Concentration& Steady Faith…”

Akhanda Bhajan involves constant contemplation on God in the morning, evening or even during the night time. No doubt, many people today are repeating the holy name; but not with love and steady faith. Some are concerned about how others are singing, whether their tune is in order, etc. This equates to doing namasankirtan with a wavering mind; no transformation will occur with such namasankirtan, despite doing it for hours together. It must be done with absolute concentration and steady faith to achieve transformation. To attain purity that pulverizes all negativity, it is not enough if chanting of the divine name is confined to a limited period. Hence global Akhanda Bhajan is held for 24 hours, every year. Consider yourself very fortunate to participate in an Akhanda Bhajan. If only you make good use of it, your life will be sanctified. Practice Namasmarana and make it a continuous spiritual exercise throughout your life.

Sathya Sai Baba

Message For the Day…” Where There is Purity, There is Divinity…”

Lord Krishna in the Gita says, “You are all part of My Divinity. Hence you should follow Me. My love is divine and sacred. So is yours!” (Mamaivamso jeevaloke jeevabhutah sanatanah). If you truly follow this principle, you will automatically achieve purity. Where there is purity, there is Divinity. Since time immemorial, each and every one of you are part of Me; you are My very own. Never forget this truth. If you develop faith in this truth, it will amount to reading all the scriptures. Every human being followsDharma (Righteousness). Where did this Dharma come from? It has come from feeling (bhava), which in turn emanated from faith(vishwas). Where faith is, there Dharma is! That faith is Truth.Dharma is verily the embodiment of Divinity. Truth is God; Faith is God; Love is God; Live in Love. Only when you cultivate Truth, Faith and Love, you can achieve anything.
