We’re used to seeing grains of sand almost everywhere we go, but what most of us don’t know is that every tiny grain of sand is a jewel, waiting to be discovered. When Dr. Gary Greeneberg first turned his microscope on beach sand, he found gem-like minerals, colorful coral fragements, and microscopic, jewel-like shells that all reveal that sand is much more then just little brown rocks.

புணேவில் உள்ள அந்த வாகன உதிரிபாக உற்பத்தி தொழிற்சாலைக்குப் போயிருந்தேன். அங்கு என் தமிழ் நண்பர் மனித வளத்துறை தலைவராக இருக்கிறார். ஆராய்ச்சி மற்றும் மேம்பாட்டுப் பிரிவுக்கு மட்டும் நூறு பொறியாளர்களை வேலைக்கு எடுத்து பராமரித்து வருவதாகச் சொன்னார்.
அந்த புனித பசுக்கள்தான் நிறுவனத்தின் எதிர்காலம் என்றும் அவர்களை நிறுவனம் எப்படியெல்லாம் போஷிக்கிறது என்றும் விளக்கினார். அந்த கம்பெனியின் தாயகம் ஜெர்மனி என்பதால் அடிக்கடி அங்கு செல்லும் வாய்ப்பையும் அடுத்த நூற்றண்டின் தொழில் நுட்பத்தை உருவாக்கும் அற்புத வாய்ப்பையும் இவர்கள் பெற்றுள்ளதாக பெருமிதத்துடன் சொன்னார்.
தமிழ்நாட்டிலிருந்து எத்தனை மாணவர்களை எடுத்தீர்கள் என்று கேட்டேன். வடக்கில் படித்த தமிழ் மாணவர்கள்தான் தன்னிடம் இருப்பதாகவும், தமிழ் நாட்டுக் கல்லூரிகளிலிருந்து எடுக்க முடியவில்லை என்றும் சொன்னார். ஏன்? அயல் நாட்டினர் பங்கு கொள்ளும் கடைசி கட்ட நேர்காணலில் ஆங்கில அறிவும் தன்னம்பிக்கையும் குறைவாக உள்ளதாக சொல்லி தமிழ் மாணவர்கள் வடிகட்டப்படுவதாகச் சொன்னார். “எல்லாம் தெரிஞ்சும் நம்ம பசங்க தைரியமா வாயை திறந்து ‘இது எனக்குத் தெரியும்’னு பளிச்சுனு சொல்ல மாட்டாங்க!” என்றார்.
வடக்கே உள்ளவர்கள் தெற்கிலிருந்து வருபவர்களை வாயில்லா பூச்சி போல பார்ப்பது நிஜம். அதை நிரூபிக்கும் விதமாக நம் மக்கள் பம்முவதும் நிஜம்தான்!
“தேசிய நீரோட்டத்தில் வடக்கும் மேற்கும் ஆதிக்கம் செய்கின்றன. தெற்கும் கிழக்கும் அடங்கிப் போகின்றன” என்று நண்பர் சொன்னதை ஏற்காமல் இருக்க முடியவில்லை.
தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மை
சேத்தன் பகத் எழுத்துகளும், ஷாருக்கான் படங்களும், மும்பை கம்பெனிகளின் விளம்பரங்களும் நாம் எப்படி பார்க்கப்படுகிறோம் என்பதற்கு சாட்சி. நாம் வாயை திறக்க முடியாததற்கு ஹிந்தி தெரியாதது மட்டும் காரணம் இல்லை. தமிழனின் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையும் பெரும் காரணம். தமிழ் தெரியாவிட்டாலும் இங்கு வந்து பிழைப்பவர்களுக்கு இருக்கும் திமிரும் தினவும் நமக்கு இல்லை.
எல்லா காலங்களிலும் படித்து விட்டு வேலைக்கு ஏங்கி நிற்கும் கூட்டமாகத்தான் சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் தமிழர்கள் இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அதுவும் வெள்ளைச்சட்டைக்குரிய பணிகளோ அல்லது அடித்தள வேலைகளோ அதிகம் பார்த்ததினால் நம்மை ஒரு பொருட்டாக அவர்கள் மதித்ததில்லை. அரசியல், சினிமா, வியாபாரம் என எல்லா துறைகளிலும் நம் அறிவு மட்டும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அதிகாரப் பகிர்வு நடக்கவில்லை.
அதேபோல எங்கும் தமிழர் தன்னையும் தன் இனத்தையும் நிலை நிறுத்துவதற்கான வேலையைச் செய்யவில்லை.
வெளி மாநிலத்தவர் ஆக்கிரமிப்பு
போர்க் குணம் எல்லாம் புற நானூற்று காலத்துடன் போய் விட்டது. கடைசியாக தமிழன் தானாக சென்று ரத்தம் சிந்தியது ஹிந்தி எதிர்ப்பிற்காக 1965ல். பிறகு கடந்த சுமார் 50 ஆண்டுகளாக வரலாறு மறந்து டி.வி பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான். இங்கு பணி செய்ய, வியாபாரம் செய்ய என சகலத்திற்கும் வெளி மாநிலத்தினர் வந்தாயிற்று. உள்ளுக்குள்ளேயே விலை போகாத தமிழன் வெளியே போய் வேலை பார்ப்பது எவ்வளவு கடினம்?
பேசியதில் கசப்புதான் மண்டியது. நாம் என்ன செய்யலாம் என்று கேட்டேன். “எது படிச்சாலும் நல்லா தைரியமா பேசணும். எந்த சூழ்நிலையையும் சமாளிக்கற தைரியம் வேணும். நிறைய வெளியே வரணும்” என்றெல்லாம் எழுதுங்க என்றார் நண்பர். இதோ எழுதிவிட்டேன்!
வேறு என்னவெல்லாம் செய்யலாம் என்று யோசித்தேன்.
“சென்றிடுவீர் எட்டுத்திக்கும்” என வீர முழக்கம் ஒவ்வொரு கல்லூரியிலும் முழங்க வேண்டும். தமிழ், ஆங்கிலம் படித்தபின் ஒரு அயல் நாட்டு மொழியும் ஹிந்தியும் கட்டாயமாக கற்க வேண்டும். கண்டிப்பாக ஒரு வெளி மாநில அனுபவம் அவசியம். குறைந்தது ஒரு வார கல்விச் சுற்றுலாவாவது கூட்டிச் செல்ல வேண்டும். பல கல்லூரிகளில் இது நடப்பதே இல்லை.
விடுமுறை காலத்தில் வெளி மாநிலத்தில் கட்டாயமாக ஒரு பிராஜக்ட் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று கல்லூரிகள் மாணவர்களை பணிக்க வேண்டும். மாற்று கலாச்சாரத்தை புரிந்து கொள்ள முயற்சிக்கும் அதே நேரம் நம் கலாச்சாரத்துடன் நம்மை அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளத் தவறிவிட்டால் தன்னம்பிக்கை தளர்வதை தவிர்க்க இயலாது.
நம் மாணவர்களின் வேலைத்தகுதிக் குறைவு என குறைபடுபவர்கள் இது பற்றியும் சிந்திக்க வேண்டும்.
அதேபோல வெளி மாநில, வெளி நாட்டு தமிழ் சங்கங்கள் கலை நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்துவதுடன் நின்று விடாமல் நம் தமிழ் மாணவர்கள் பிற கலாசாரங்களில் வேரூன்ற உதவ வேண்டும். இந்த புரிந்துணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தும் பயிற்சிகளை நடத்தலாம். அந்த காலத்தில் கோயில் உள்ள ஊர்களில் தன் இன மக்களுக்காக சத்திரம் கட்டி வைத்தார்கள். வரும் விருந்தாளிகளுக்கு உணவு உபசரிப்பு மட்டுமின்றி ஒரு கலாசார பரிவர்த்தனைக்கும் அது வழி செய்யும். அதுபோல இந்த தமிழ் சங்கங்கள் இயங்க ஒரு விரிவான செயல் திட்டமே தீட்டலாம்.
`மினி ஆந்திரா’
மதராஸ் ஐ.ஐ.டி க்குள் ஒரு மினி ஆந்திராவே உண்டு. பல ஐ.டி. கம்பெனிகளில் நிர்வாகம், மனித வளம் போன்ற பிரிவுகளில் கேரள ஆதிக்கம் உண்டு. பல வட நாட்டுத் தலைவர்கள் கொண்ட தென்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்களில் இங்குள்ள பணியாளர்களுக்கு ஹிந்தி வகுப்பு நடக்கிறது. அதுபோல பல நிறுவனங்களில் தமிழ் நாட்டு பணியாளர்கள் (கீழ் நிலைகளில் மட்டுமல்ல!) வேண்டாம் என வெளி மாநிலத்தினரை நாடும் பணி தீவிரமாக நடக்கிறது. இவை எல்லாம் இயல்பாக நடைபெற்றவை அல்ல.
உள்ளுக்குள் வாய்ப்புகள் மறுக்கப்பட்டு, வெளியே போகவும் அச்சப்பட்டு நிலை குலைந்து நிற்கிறான் தமிழன். கடாரம் கொண்டான் என்று பெருமையோடு பேசப்பட்ட இனம் இன்று காட்பாடியை தாண்டுவதற்கே தடுமாறிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது!

Incredible Photos Taken by the Hubble Telescope!
The Hubble telescope is located outside our atmosphere, and is orbiting the Earth at more than 500 km above sea level, while orbiting the Earth every hour and a half, at a speed of 28,000 km an hour. Its name was given to it in honor of famed astronomer Edwin Hubble, and it was placed in orbit back in 1990, 22 years ago. It weighs about 11 tons (but in space, it weighs nothing at all).

A glorious eruption of vibrantly-colored flower petals – 8 million of them – has flooded through a small village in Costa Rica. The surreal and beautiful sight is part of SONY’s advertisement campaign for their new 4K Ultra HD line of TV sets.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about this advertisement stunt is that these billowing waves of petals are real. It took the creative team behind the endeavor and the inhabitants of the village more than two weeks to collect the 8 million flower petals used, which ended up weighing about 3.5 tons.
A British special effects team brought various wind machines to blow the petals around and create the amazing sights in the video. Some visual effects were added, but director Jaron Albertin assures us that as much of the video as possible is real. Sony’s behind-the-scenes video also indicates that all of the petals were either real or from some biodegradable material. The video was commissioned by the McCann advertising agency, and photographer Nick Meek shot photos of the whole affair.
The reason the video uses 8 million flower petals is because that’s the number of pixels on the 4K TV’s screen. The video will be used to demonstrate this new ultra-high-definition screen’s sharp display and color capabilities.

This guitar-shaped forest is a piece of land art in Argentina. Here’s how it looks from space.
Pedro Martin Ureta created a piece of land art so that it could be viewed from an airplane. It turns out that it is visible from space, too.
In the fertile lowland plains of Argentina (the Pampas), a guitar-shaped forest grows amidst the farmland. The project was started in 1979 by Ureta on his farm near the town of Laboulaye, and it has become a wonder for pilots and passengers flying over the region. Together with his children, Ureta created the forest in a tribute to his wife, Graciela, who died during childbirth in 1977. News reports claim that Ureta has never seen his creation from the air, except for photos from friends.
According to news reports, the forest is composed of more than 7,000 cypress and eucalyptus trees. It stretches nearly a kilometer (two-thirds of a mile) across the landscape.
The image above was acquired on November 2, 2007, by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite. The false-color image was created with red, green, and near-infrared light.

Damian McCudden Landscape Photographer captured this photo of today’s partial solar eclipse as seen from Australia. He wrote:
Partial Solar Eclipse at sunset today. I made my way to the farm, went to the old barn but too many trees around so raced back to the windmill and shot it from there. Sucks that there are power lines in the way, but I reckon they add to the shot, and that nice tree next to the windmill adds to the shot, too.

Wello started off as a social venture with the mission of providing clean water to everyone. They have launched several business models that encourages people to use the WaterWheel to lift their lives and families out of poverty. Especially in rural nations, where lives depend on water more than anything. One billion people don’t have direct access to water. This means that they have to travel at least 1/2 a mile for a safe water source. As many know, women usually carry clay pots on their heads or by their waist. To get a sufficient amount of water, it is very heavy.
Cynthia Koenig and her team spent 12 months developing a prototype for what is called the WaterWheel.
It is noted that the WaterWheel has several benefits.
By giving people access to water, the WaterWheel frees up time for women and removes the burdens that prevent children from going to school. This boosts family income, health, education, and general wellbeing. This will break the cycle of poverty. Innovation is key.

| Oleg Oprisco has loved fairy-tales and other-worldly stories all her life. As a photographer, living in Lviv, Ukraine, she creates surreal images. But unlike many other surreal artists, she doesn’t use any digital manipulation, indeed, she uses nothing but an old film camera. That means all you see in these photos is real, and had to be set up. These days, digital photography has diminished the use of ‘setting up a shot’ like this, and it’s a shame, because in my opinion it comes out beautifully. |
