“No” From IIT -JEE … But Big “YES” from Stanford University !!!

Visually impaired Delhi student Kartik Sawhney has repeatedly been denied permission to appear for the IIT-JEE in the past three years because of his disability. However, in March 2013, he was awarded a fully funded scholarship to pursue engineering at Stanford University in the US. This is his story.

On May 27, 2013, when 18-year-old Kartik Sawhney scored 96 per cent in his Class 12 CBSE examination, he became the country’s first ever visually impaired student to have achieved the feat in the science stream.

Appearing from Delhi Public School, RK Puram, he scored 99 in computer science (his favourite subject) and 95 each in English, mathematics, physics and chemistry; his total is 479 out of 500.

Recalling some of the challenges, he says, “Studying with normal students wasn’t easy, and neither was choosing a stream of my choice.”

Determination and perseverance are the key factors to his success — he simply would not take no for an answer.

“A lot of people think that disabilities limits you from doing certain things. But I think success comes to those who believe in their strengths,” he states.

Sawhney, who comes from a middle class family — his father Ravinder Sawhney is a businessman and mother Indu Sawhney a homemaker — confesses that aiming high and making tough decisions at every stage was still easier than executing them.

For three years in a row, he has been denied permission to appear for the IIT-JEE; he was told that there is no provision for blind students to take the competitive exam. But he did not lose hope and applied to universities abroad.

And in March 2013, Sawhney received a fully funded scholarship to pursue a five-year engineering programme at Stanford University. Once armed with this degree, he intends to “improve the condition of visually impaired back in India”.

501 Reasons Why Brian Lara was the Best !!!.. 6 June 1994..A Date To Remember !!!!

Cardiff, June 6 — Nineteen years ago to the day, Brian Lara authored one of the greatest moments in the annals of cricket. Edgbaston, June 6, 1994. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, you probably don’t qualify as a cricket nut.

In this part of the world, the cricketing slang Nelson (derived from the one eyed, one armed, one legged English Admiral Nelson) evokes a great deal of trepidation. It applies when a batsman or a team is on 111. Lara, of course, wasn’t one for superstitions.

Full Nelson

The Trinidadian started the day unbeaten on 111, after rain washed out the third day’s play and following a customary rest day on Sunday. By lunch he had already raced well past 250. Gladstone Small, his Warwickshire teammate, recalls the instant when Lara made his intentions clear. “We were sitting in the dressing room at lunch.me, Brian and Keith Piper (the wicket-keeper). He said, ‘I’m going for the record’. I asked, ‘What the 375?’. He said, ‘No. Hanif Mohammad’s 499’. I asked him ‘Are you serious? You’re still 250 runs away’. He said, ‘You watch me’,” recalled Small.

As a plethora of records fell by the wayside, the teammates began to take notice. By the time tea was taken, he was just 82 shy. “We then realised that Durham could walk away 30 minutes before the end of play, because the match was heading to a draw,” remembered Small.

Nick of time

As Lara reached 497, two runs shy of Mohammad’s 36-year-old record, the fact just dawned on him. John Morris, a part-timer who had hit a double ton for Durham, was bowling the over.

“The fourth ball of the over he bowled a bouncer that hit him on the head. The next ball, he hit a beautiful off-drive, and we declared the innings. If he hadn’t hit those runs, Durham would have walked off. As soon as he hit the boundary, skipper (Dermot Reeve) declared the innings,” said Small.

The legendary moment would have never arrived had it not been for a bit of luck early in his innings. Lara was bowled off a no-ball when he was on 12, but the decisive moment came on 18. “The form Lara was in that season was just unbelievable. I reckon he must’ve edged just 3 or 4 balls all season. For an attacking left-handed batsman that was incredible. But on 18, he nicked one and the Durham wicket-keeper Chris Scott dropped it. He said at the time, ‘I hope he doesn’t get a hundred’.”

A century, of course, was the least of his concern. The innings capped a memorable 50 days for Lara, who since he broke the Test world record with 375 against England in Antigua, went on a run of 7 hundreds in 8 first-class innings. Bradmanesque!

The other love

The season was also a defining one for Lara, his first in English cricket. Warwickshire won the treble, and he found his other great sporting passion – golf. “The Belfry Golf Course (which has hosted the prestigious Ryder Cup) is on the outskirts of Birmingham. At the time, Lara had never played golf. Brian was one of those guys where batting was the only thing he did left-handed.

He bowled right-handed, signed autographs right-handed, he even played golf right-handed. He had a twenty handicap, but he played so much golf that year. His great Trinidadian friend Dwight Yorkewas with Aston Villa (Birmingham based) at the time and two would always head to Belfry when they would get time off. Roger Twose, the New Zealander, was also in our team and he played lefty. His golf clubs were also left-handed. Brian borrowed his clubs, but he couldn’t play golf that well as a southpaw,” recalled Small.

A day after the match Lara headed to London to do the breakfast show circuit, many interviews were lined up and he spent a good part of the day there. In the night he went out partying to celebrate the momentous feat. The next day, Warwickshire were playing a domestic limited over match. “He was really tired, he could barely keep his eyes open.

He asked the skipper to be put on the boundary. That didn’t work out. He then asked to be put at slips. He just couldn’t keep his eyes open and he asked the umpire to go off the field. We were set a target of over 250. We lost a few early wickets, he somehow managed to get it all together, and went out to bat. He got 70-odd and we won. What a player!”

Indeed. What a player!!!!

Message For The Day….Hold On to HIM …You Will Never Slip ….

This microphone before Me, must have been made by someone, is it not? The creator is not visible or known to you presently, but you have no doubts of this person’s existence. Besides, you are confident that this person understands and knows fully well all the components, characteristics, features and effective functioning of this microphone. So too, there must be a Creator for this Universe and He must be know all about it. This Universe is composed of the five elements, and He is their Manipulator, fully aware of their subtle characteristics and properties. That Creator is your Indweller (Kshetrajna), who knows His Field (Kshethra). Hold on to Him and live your lives; you will not slip. Build your activities on that basis, your career will not cave in. You will develop courage and faith in yourself and in your destiny.

Solve This Math. Problem!!! And Claim $1 Million from Texas Banker !!!!

Texas banker and self-taught mathematician D. Andrew Beal has increased the cash prize for proving a conjecture he discovered in 1993, the Associated Press reported.

Held by the American Mathematical Society, the $1,000,000 cash prize goes to the first to prove the Beal Conjecture, an offshoot of the legendary Fermat’s Last Theorem proof that was solved by Andrew Wiles in 1994.

Here’s the problem that can make you rich.

beal's conjecture

Fermat’s Last Theorem went unsolved for hundreds of years. It said that no three positive integers a, b and c can satisfy

ax + bx = cx

when integer x is greater than two. While this may seem somewhat simple, and if you play around with it it becomes self-evident, it’s a complete pain to prove.

Andy Beal had been working on Fermat’s Last Theorem when he stumbled upon a different problem. At the time, he was using computers to look at similar equations with different exponents.

Beal’s Conjecture is related. If a, b, c, x, y, and z are all positive integers and x, y, z are greater than two,

ax + by = cz

is only possible when a, b and c have a common prime factor.

Beal found during his computations that the only solutions to the equation were when a, b and c had a common factor  — like how 8, 6 and 10 all have a common factor of 2 — so he contacted folks in academia to confirm that the problem was new, then set up a prize with the AMS for the person who proves his conjecture.

So, if you find a proof or counterexample to Beal’s Conjecture that gets approved by the AMS-appointed committee and gets into a journal, you get a million bucks.

Action Replay of “The Birds” … Alfred Hitchcock Movie !!!

A scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds released in 1963. Tourists visiting the Farne Islands have been forced to dive for cover in scenes reminiscent of the film ” The Birds ”  during visits to a huge nesting site !!!

Thousands of terns nesting on the isolated Farne Islands are dive-bombing and pecking people’s heads forcing them to take cover during visits to islands off the coast of Northumberland.

Even bird watchers trying to photograph them are watching helplessly as the creatures attack their cameras.

Will Scott, National Trust Ranger, said: ‘The terns are trying to protect their eggs and also to protect their chicks.

‘Obviously they nest quite close to the board walk which gives them a bit of protection from the gulls who come and take their eggs.

‘It’s a bit of a love hate relationship because the humans that are protecting them by chasing away the gulls are also quite close to their eggs which is why they are pecking head and can drop a little present on you as well.’

But the attacks are not putting off tourists visiting the islands.

One visitor said: ‘I think they’re fantastic, it is the first time I have been for years. I’m not scared, what’s the point in being scared, they’re just friendly. I really love them.’

Another said: ‘They are absolutely fantastic, this is the second time I have been and I’d recommend it to anybody.’

When asked about visitors being scared of the birds, she said: ‘They know what they’re coming into, they should be prepared and bring a hat. It’s no good hitting the birds, they are just protecting their nest.’

The Farne Islands are a group of 20 islands and are home to hundreds of seals and one of Britain’s largest sea bird colonies.

Mr Scott said: ‘The Farne Islands are really important for arctic tern. We are one of the largest colonies in England and one of the most successful as well.

‘The presence of people makes the terns a lot more successful, a lot more collective as a colony and produce a lot more chicks because of the lack of
predators who come and steal their chicks while they are raising them.’

“Wash and Reuse” Notebook!!!…An Innovative Technique !!!!

When 21 year old engineering student Indrajeet Ghorpade saw waste paper bins at his college hostel overflowing with used notebooks at the end of every semester, he was horrified. If this was the waste generated by a single institution, he could only imagine the scenario at schools, colleges and universities across the country at the end of every academic cycle. Thousands of tonnes of paper wasted each year just on rough-work and calculations. Considering that India recycles only 26% of its paper, this amounted to shocking misuse of a non-renewable resource. Something needed to be done and fast.

The first step for Indrajeet, was admitting that despite technology providing us with paperless alternatives like laptops, tablets etc, the conventional paper notebook at least in the Indian context was here to stay. Although, access to technology is rapidly increasing, it remains out of reach for the poor student. Besides, writing and learning is still the most popular method of studying in India across the economic spectrum.

The question that kept doing the rounds in his mind was how did one come up with an environment-friendly alternative that was affordable and yet did not disrupt the preferred method of studying? At last it dawned upon him. A reusable notebook that uses washable synthetic sheets instead of paper. So simple.

“These sheets can be washed, dried,re-bound and used again,” says an enthusiastic Indrajeet. “Thus you end up saving electricity and trees that go into the manufacturing of the conventional paper notebooks as well as the money that goes into buying new books”.

“Since stationery can be very expensive,” he says. “This is an attractive alternative for the students. One does not fill all the pages of a book in a day, so you don’t have to wash it everyday. Most likely you’ll only need to do it once a month and its as simple as doing your laundry.”

The Reusable Notebook: Wash and re-use!When showcased at the Innovation Jockeys contest last year, the reusable notebook became an instant hit. Buoyed by the positive response generated by his product, its proud creator says it’s only a matter of time before the reusable notebook hits the market.

“I have presented my idea to few of the leading stationery manufactures and organizations that support eco-friendly innovations and have received a positive response. With efforts channeled in the right direction along with smart marketing strategies, we should be able to see the product being used in every household, school and college in near future.”

In his final year in engineering at the Vellore Institute of Technology, Indrajeet has already landed a cushy job with a prestigious internet company. However, he dreams of striking it big on his own someday. First on his agenda is creating an “educational Institution where teaching will happen in an unconventional way with a complete emphasis on gaining practical skills, encouraging creativity and innovation.”

Other dream projects include, turning his house and eventually the entire neighbourhood into an eco-friendly zone. A beach-side café also happens to be on the list.

However, the die-hard fan of Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee insists that innovators today have a more difficult challenge ahead of them. Environmental sustainability must be a part of every solution. For him,a true trailblazer is one who can think diversely and “come up with a technique that is efficient, cost effective and supports sustainable development.” Much like the reusable notebook.

Message For The Day….Our Mind To be Fixed On Sathya and Nithya Thro Viveka …

The life principle (Jeevathathwa) is like the grain covered in the husk of delusion (Maya), as that rice is enveloped in the paddy. The husk (Maya) has to be removed. The grain (Jeevathathwa) has to be boiled and made soft and assimilated so that it might add to health and strength. The softened rice can be compared to the Supreme Soul (Paramathma). The mind should be employed in this process. It has to be fixed in the Truth (Sathya) and the Ever-lasting (Nithya). To remove the husk, Discrimination (Viveka) is an effective instrument. Develop the power of discrimination and find out, which is beneficial, and which is not. Seek the light always – be full of confidence and zest. Never yield to despair, for it has never produced any results!
