This image is a four-shot panorama featuring the springtime arc of our Milky Way galaxy reflected in the calm water of Unity Pond, Maine. The structure on the left is a train trestle located on the unused train tracks. This is a tough spot to shoot from because of the rocky and marshy terrain but well worth it.

There is quite a bit of green airglow in the sky and the orange hue on the horizon is light pollution.

Image of the Day …World Ocean Day !!!

The ocean from Tofino, British Columbia, Canada. We chose it partly because Canada helped start World Oceans Day, which happens every June 8.

To help celebrate World Oceans Day, Ryong Lee of Canada posted this beautiful photo onEarthSky’s Facebook page. When we started talking about World Oceans Day on our social media pages last week, several people said they had never heard of it. In fact, Canada made the original proposal for World Oceans Day in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The day has been unofficially celebrated every June 8 since then, and, in 2008, the United Nations did officially recognize it. Since then, World Oceans Day has been coordinated internationally by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network. These organizations say it has greater success and global participation each year.

Sylvia Earle, perhaps the world’s most recognized and respected oceanographer, made a video plea to protect the oceans, which was released today. Among other things, Earle said:

I think of the ocean as the blue heart of the planet

Beauty of the SUN … Stunning Images !!!

Photos Celebrating the Beauty of Our Sun

While they like to equate the earth to a mother, it is the sun that makes all life on earth possible, giving us the energy, the light that makes us grow and allows all life on earth to exist. So here are stunning photos of that huge ball of flame, 8 light minutes away…

Shadows Show a Different Picture !!!

The next time you take a picture, don’t focus on the light or your subject. Look at the shadows… they could be telling an awesome story you were never aware of.

There is always more to life than what’s on the surface. What you may see at first may not be the whole story. Take these photos, for instance. At first, it might seem like a totally normal scene…

Then, you will realize what story the shadows are telling. Two entirely different things are happening in these photos. Photography focuses on the relationship between light, darkness, focus and perspective. By changing something small, the stories change. Check them out, see if you can discover what’s going on here.

Jet zips past moon

“Aimed at the moon and started to focus when I saw the jet enter the frame … “

By GregDiesel Landscape Photography. Visit his online gallery on Facebook.

Check out this cool image of an airplane passing in front of the moon. GregDiesel Landscape Photography captured it on May 31, 2014. He wrote:

Unless you live by an airport and try all day/night it’s a really tough shot to get! Story behind it was that I was just taking my ‘daily moon’ shot and my shutter froze. I took the lens off cleaned the sensors and snapped it back on. Aimed at the moon and started to focus when I saw the jet enter the frame and then, I mean, I needed split-second reaction to focus and get about 5 shots as it flew through in about 2 seconds start to finish. Got lucky with the timing.

Lucky for us! .

World”s Smallest Country with 22 Residents !!!

LYING in international waters off the coast of England sits a tiny fort that claims to be the world’s smallest country.

Located 10 kilometres from the Suffolk Coast in southeast England, the Principality of Sealand declared its independence from Britain in 1967. Home to just 22 residents, it has its own royal family, currency, stamps and even a football team — the Sealand All Stars.

More like an oil rig to look at, Sealand occupies a fort left over from World War II, and is basically two concrete towers connected by an iron platform.

The story goes that British Major Paddy Roy Bates took over the site from pirate broadcasters with the intent to start his own radio station called Radio Essex.

Following his occupation, he attempted to establish Sealand as a nation-state in 1975 writing a national constitution and establishing other national symbols.

Despite it not being recognised as a state, the Bates family manage it as though it is a recognised sovereign entity and have given themselves royal titles. Prince Roy and his wife Princess Joan (now deceased) named their son His Royal Highness Prince Michael who serves as Sealand’s acting Head of State.

Tourists can help bolster the local economy by purchasing souvenirs from the online shop as well as royal titles. For $360 you can buy the title of Count or Countess of Sealand or become a lord or lady for $52. You can even buy one square foot of the fort for just $32.

In October 2012, Roy Bates died at the age of 91, and the Sealand crown passed to his son, Michael, 63, who is still said to live on Sealand with his family and friends.

Pictures That Will Make YOU Laugh …!!!

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these awesomely timed and hilarious photos are worth about fifty-thousand words. It either takes true talent or dumb luck to capture photos that are thi s perfect.

Moments like these make you sit back and appreciate how entertaining life can be if you let it (or know some spectacularly clumsy people). At least one of these awesome pictures will make you laugh hard.

Nothing to see here, folks…..
