AS SHE sipped her gin and tonic at 30,000ft, Lamenda Kingdon chatted to a fellow passenger about how much she was looking forward to visiting Spain.

She was aghast when her neighbour replied: “Not on this plane, you won’t.”

It was then that the grandmother discovered that, rather than heading for the historic city of Granada, her flight was bound for the Caribbean island of Grenada.

Thanks to a misunderstanding, instead of booking the 62-year-old on a two-hour flight to southern Spain, the air miles travel firm Avios had put her on a 10-hour journey across the Atlantic.

Mrs Kingdon had planned her trip to Granada, with its famous Alhambra palace, as part of a ‘bucket list’ of activities after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and a brain tumour.

She booked the flight over the phone using her late husband’s air miles and did not notice when the ticket arrived that the destination was one letter different – and some 6437 kilometres away – from the place she wanted to go to. Mrs Kingdon, a former life coach from Plymouth, packed her bags and boarded her British Airways flight at Gatwick last month, oblivious to the mistake until two hours after takeoff.

“After lunch and a gin and tonic I began to chatting to the lady sitting next to me,” she said. “I told her how much I was looking forward to seeing the Alhambra.

“She replied: ‘Not on this flight, you won’t be.'”

“She then grabbed the elbow of a passing stewardess and told her: “This lady thinks she’s going to Spain’.”

“I looked at the ticket and it did indeed say Grenada. I had noticed the departure and arrival times were vastly different – but I presumed that had something to do with the time difference.” The sympathetic flight crew ushered Mrs Kingdon into the first-class cabin and gave her champagne. At a scheduled stop in St Lucia, she was put on a flight back to Gatwick. There she was met by apologetic airline staff who put her in a hotel for the night and arranged for Avios, which has links to BA, to reimburse her points and fly her to Malaga, the nearest major airport to Granada, the following day.

Avios also apologised for the mistake and gave Mrs Kingdon enough points for her next dream destination – New Zealand. Since her return from Granada, Mrs Kingdon has been given the all clear by her cancer doctors and hopes to make the trip next year.

“Looking back on the Granada mix up, I genuinely don’t blame anyone,” she said yesterday. “The person on the other end of the phone probably just misheard me.

“I honestly didn’t notice the spelling difference.

“But I’m certainly not complaining. They treated me wonderfully once they found out what had happened.”

Sure, the competition isn’t all that tough right now, but Warren Buffett this week looked like the most popular man in Washington.

The Oracle of Omaha was in DC speaking to the 400 attendees at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. He charmed the crowd by playing his ukulele Tuesday night, earning a standing ovation from the likes of Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and IBM’s Ginni Rometty.During his one-on-one interview Wednesday with Fortune’s Carol Loomis, he laid out a straightforward, optimistic look at the economy, his life and women in business.

Still, he wasn’t afraid to take on the dysfunction in Washington and said it was “so stupid” to even think that the U.S. could default on its debt. Highlights from Buffett’s time on stage:

On the fight over the debt limit:

  • “We have spent 237 years since 1776 building a reputation as the most wonderful country on earth, and one that’s entrusted with having the reserve currency of the world. … That is being put in jeopardy now and it could be destroyed in a little while. A great reputation is like virginity. It can preserved, but it can’t be restored.”
  • “The whole idea of a debt limit is a terrible, terrible mistake. If you’re going to spend more than you take in, what are you going to do except raise the debt limit? Sometimes the cloud of envy and hatred come to darken relationships. This is primarily due to fear; fear that causes anger. The emergence of devotion, and the humility and wisdom resulting from it, will make fear and anger disappear. Anger wastes health, time and character. Never allow it to have a free play. Just like you cultivate the field, you must cultivate the fields of feelings, motives, desires and promptings. People are often ruined because they cannot tolerate the prosperity of another. Most people are bent on pulling down another. Jealousy is the chief cause of ruin and it is born due to the undue importance attached to the body, the senses and the accumulation of objects that cater to the senses. Develop the spirit of mutual help. See things in proper perspective; give everything its worth and no more.

A mother holds a child that has soiled its shirt and puts on it a new one. Death is the removal of the soiled shirt and putting on the fresh one. Let the Mother do Her will, be a willing child in Her hands. Have full faith in Her love and wisdom. Be an instrument; submerge your will in the Will of the Lord. That will save you from worry and pain. Do not lose your mind, seeing people who have gone astray. It will be like seeing a stagnant pool and then judging rainwater to be dirty. Rain water is pure; it is the soil that soils it. Also be careful not to decry anyone. It amounts to decrying God. Be aware of the God within you and the God in everyone else. If you do this, there is nothing to equal the joy and peace that you will be rewarded with. I bless you, so that you may attain that bliss.

சின்ன வயதில் எல்லோருக்குமே நாம் என்னவாக வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு கனவு இருக்கும். நிச்சயமாக யாரும் ஊழல் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றோ, செயல்படாமல் நாற்காலியைத் தேய்க்க வேண்டும் என்றோ கனவு காண்பதில்லை. எதையோ சாதிக்க வேண்டும் என்றுதான் எல்லோரும் கனவு காண்கிறோம். அந்தக் கனவை எவ்வளவு நாளுக்கு உயிரோடு வைத்திருக்கிறோம்? அந்தக் கனவுக்காக நாம் எவ்வளவு அர்ப்பணிப்பைக் கொடுக்கிறோம்? எந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் அந்தக் கனவைப் பலிகொடுக்கிறோம்?

அறந்தாங்கி பக்கத்திலுள்ள சின்னக் கிராமமான அழியாநிலையைச் சேர்ந்த ஜோதிமணிக்கு வாத்தியார் கனவை ஊட்டிவிட்டது அவருடைய படிக்காத அம்மா காந்திமதி. ஆறாம் வகுப்பில் அவருக்கு ஆசிரியராக இருந்த வில்லியம் ஓர் ஆசிரியர் எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்கு முன்னுதாரணமாக இருந்திருக்கிறார். தன்னுடைய கனவுத் தீயை அணையாமல் அடைகாத்து வளர்த்த ஜோதிமணி 19-வது வயதிலேயே அரசுப் பள்ளி ஆசிரியரானார். ஒரு கிராமத்து அரசுப் பள்ளி ஆசிரியராக உலகளந்தான்வயல், குறுந்திறக்கோட்டை, கூத்தாடிவயல், பெருங்காடு என்று அறந்தாங்கியைச் சுற்றியுள்ள கிராமங்களில் சின்னச் சின்ன மாற்றங்களாக முன்னெடுத்தவர் ஒன்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் மாங்குடி ஊராட்சி ஒன்றிய நடுநிலைப் பள்ளியின் தலைமையாசிரியர் ஆனார்.

இந்த ஒன்பது ஆண்டுகளில், ஓர் அரசுப் பள்ளிக்கான மிகச் சிறந்த முன்னுதாரணமாக மாங்குடிப் பள்ளியை மாற்றியிருக்கிறார் ஜோதிமணி. பசுமையான தோட்டங்கள் நிறைந்த பள்ளி வளாகம், சுத்திகரிக்கப்பட்ட குடிநீரில் தொடங்கி தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டி வரையில் சகல வசதிகளையும் உள்ளடக்கிய வகுப்பறைகள், விரிவான நூலகம், சுத்தமான கழிப்பறைகள், படிப்போடு கூடவே ஒவ்வொரு மாணவருக்கும் கைத்தொழில் பயிற்சி, எல்லா மாணவர்களுக்கும் மின்னஞ்சல் முகவரிகள் என்று மாங்குடிப் பள்ளியை இன்றைக்குப் புதிதாகப் பார்க்கும் எவரும் ஆச்சர்யத்தில் ஆழ்ந்துபோவார்கள். மாங்குடியின் வரலாறு தெரிந்தவர்களுக்கோ இது ஆச்சர்யம் அல்ல; அதிசயம்.

புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்டத்தின் ஏழ்மையான குக்கிராமங்களில் ஒன்று மாங்குடி. ஆகப் பெரும்பான்மையினர் கூலித் தொழிலாளிகள். ஊரில் எந்த வசதியும் கிடையாது. ஏழு கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ள நகரமான அறந்தாங்கிக்குத்தான் சகலத்துக்கும் செல்ல வேண்டும். ஊருக்கு பேருந்து போக்குவரத்துகூடக் கிடையாது. சுதந்திரத்தாலும் மக்களாட்சியாலும் மாங்குடி மக்கள் பெற்ற ஒரே பயன் அந்தப் பள்ளிக்கூடம். அதுவும் அரசுப் பள்ளிகளுக்கே உரிய சகல அழுக்கு அடையாளங்களோடுதான் இருந்தது. இப்படிப்பட்ட சூழலில்தான் ஜோதிமணி அங்கு வந்தார். கொஞ்சம்கொஞ்சமாக மாற்றினார் எல்லாவற்றையும். எப்படி?

“எனக்குப் படிப்பிச்சது, என்னை வளர்த்தது எல்லாமே அரசுப் பள்ளிக்கூடங்கள்தான். ஒரு மாணவனா நான் படிச்ச பள்ளிக்கூடங்களைப் பார்த்து எவ்வளவோ வேதனைப்பட்டிருக்கேன். அப்பவெல்லாம் எங்கம்மா சொல்வாங்க ‘தம்பி, இன்னைக்கு நீ படிக்கிறப்போ எதெல்லாம் பள்ளிக்கூடத்துல, உனக்குச் சங்கடமா இருக்கோ, அதையெல்லாம் நீ நாளைக்கு வாத்தியாராப் போய் மாத்தணும்பா’ன்னு. அதையே வைராக்கியமா வைச்சுக்கிட்டுதான் படிச்சேன்.

ஆசிரியர் பணிக்கு வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்தப்போ, அங்கே உள்ள யதார்த்தச் சூழல் புரிஞ்சுது. ஆரம்பத்துல துடிப்புல செஞ்ச எவ்வளவோ காரியங்கள் பகையையும் வசவையும்தான் வாங்கித்தந்துச்சு. எது ஒண்ணையும் நான் அவமானமா நெனைக்கலை. எல்லோர்கூடவும் கைகோத்துக்கிட்டேன். எந்த ஒரு மாற்றத்தையும் உடனேயோ, வெறும் உத்தரவுகளாலேயோ கொண்டுவந்துட முடியாதுங்கிறதைப் புரிஞ்சுக்கிட்டேன். சின்னச்சின்ன விஷயங்கள்தான் நான் கொண்டுவந்த எல்லா மாற்றங்களுக்கும் அடிப்படை.

முதல்முதல்ல பள்ளிக்கூடத்துல நான் செஞ்ச பொதுக்காரியம் என்ன தெரியுமா? பைப் இல்லாம ஒழுகிக்கிட்டு இருந்த குழாய்க்கு பைப் வாங்கி மாட்டினது. நம்மள்ல பலருக்கும் இந்த அனுபவம் இருந்திருக்கும். வீட்டுக்கு எதிர்ல, பாதையில, அலுவலகத்துல எங்கேயாவது ஒரு குழாய் பைப் இல்லாம தண்ணியைக் கொட்டிக்கிட்டு இருக்கிறதைப் பார்த்துக்கிட்டே கடந்திருப்போம். யாரும் கவலை இல்லாம கடக்கிறது இல்லை. அது நம்ம பொறுப்பு இல்லைனு நெனைக்கிறோம். ஒரு விவசாயக் குடும்பத்துல வந்த என்னால இப்படித் தண்ணி தாரைத்தாரையா போறதைச் சகிச்சுக்க முடியலை. பைப்பை வாங்கி மாட்டினேன். வெறும் அஞ்சு ரூபா சமாச்சாரம். எவ்வளவு தண்ணீர் மிச்சம்?

இப்படித்தான் ஒவ்வொரு விஷயமும். மாங்குடிக்கு வந்தப்போ, இங்கே உள்ள குழந்தைங்க அவ்வளவு மோசமான சீருடையில வந்தாங்க. அப்போ வருஷத்துக்கு ஒரு சீருடைதான் அரசாங்கம் தரும். பெற்றோரைக் கூப்பிட்டோம். அவங்க ஏழ்மையைக் காரணமாச் சொன்னாங்க. என்ன வழி? ‘இனி தீபாவளிக்கோ, பொங்கலுக்கோ பிள்ளைங்களுக்குப் புது துணி எடுக்கும்போது சீருடையாவே எடுத்துடுங்களேன்’னு கேட்டுக்கிட்டோம். குழந்தைங்க உடுப்பு மாறுனுச்சு. தினமும் குளிப்பாட்டி அனுப்பச் சொன்னோம். தலை வாராமல் வர்றதை மட்டும் மாத்த முடியலை. பள்ளிக்கூடத்துலேயே சீப்பு – கண்ணாடி வாங்கி வெச்சோம். நன்கொடையாளிகளைத் தேடிப்பிடிச்சோம். ஒவ்வொரு பைசாவுக்கும் வரவுசெலவு நேர்மையா பராமரிச்சதால உதவி செஞ்சவங்களே திரும்பத்திரும்பத் தேடிவந்து செஞ்சாங்க. பள்ளியோட அடிப்படைக் கட்டுமான வசதி உயர்ந்துச்சு.

சரி, பள்ளிக்கூடத்தோட அன்றாடச் செயல்பாட்டை உயர்த்துறது எப்படி? குழந்தைங்ககிட்ட கூட்டுமுயற்சியைக் கொண்டுவந்தோம். இங்கே நடக்குற ஒவ்வொரு செயல்பாடுக்கும் ஒரு குழு உண்டு. பள்ளி சுகாதாரக் குழு, தோட்டக் குழு, நூலகக் குழு, கணினிப் பராமரிப்புக் குழு… இப்படி. பள்ளிக்கூடத்துல உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையும் ஏதாவது ஒரு குழுவுல இருப்பாங்க. ஒவ்வொரு வகுப்பறைலேயும் ஒரு தபால் பெட்டி உண்டு. பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்கு உள்ளே யாருக்கு யார் வேணும்னாலும் தபால் எழுதிப்போடாலாம். அந்தந்த வகுப்புக்குத் தபால்காரரா இருக்குற மாணவர் மற்ற வகுப்புத் தபால்கார மாணவர்கிட்டே கொடுத்து சம்பந்தப்பட்டவங்ககிட்டே சேர்த்துடுவார். இதோ பாருங்க, இன்னைக்கு வந்துருக்குற தபால்” என்று ஒரு அட்டையை நீட்டுகிறார்.

‘ஐயா, எங்கள் வகுப்பில் குழல் விளக்கு வேலை செய்யவில்லை. மழை பெய்யும்போது வெளிச்சம் இல்லாததால் படிக்கக் கஷ்டமாக இருக்கிறது. சரிசெய்ய வேண்டும்’ என்று எட்டாம் வகுப்பு மாணவர் ஒருவர் எழுதிய கடிதம் அது. “பிள்ளைகளிடம் எழுதும் பழக்கத்தை உருவாக்கிவிட்டால் போதும்; எதிர்காலத்தில் எதையும் எழுதிச் சமாளித்துவிடுவார்கள் அவர்கள்” என்கிறார்.

பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் படித்து முடிக்கும்போது தையல் பயிற்சியோ, புத்தக பைண்டிங் பயிற்சியோ சொல்லிக்கொடுத்துவிடுகிறார்கள். “கைத்தொழில் ஒன்று கையில் இருக்க வேண்டும் அல்லவா?” என்கிறார்.

சரி, அரசுப் பள்ளிகளில் ஒரு தலைமையாசிரியர் நினைத்தால் மட்டும் மாற்றம் சாத்தியம் இல்லையே; ஏனைய ஆசிரியர்களின் ஒத்துழைப்பும் முக்கியமாயிற்றே; எப்படி அரவணைக்கிறார் ஜோதிமணி? “காந்தி காட்டிய வழி” என்கிறார்.

“பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் கழிப்பறையே இல்லாத காலம் ஒண்ணு இருந்துச்சு. கழிப்பறை கட்டிய பின் அது சுத்தமாக இல்லை. நம்ம பிள்ளைங்க அசிங்கம் பண்ணிட்டா வீட்டை விட்டுடுவோமா? முதலில் நானே துடைப்பத்தை எடுத்துக்கிட்டு இறங்கினேன். பின்னாடியே ஆசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களும் இறங்கினாங்க. அர்ப்பணிப்போட நேர்மையாகவும் நேர்மறையாகவும் அணுகுனா, உடனிருக்குற ஆசிரியர்களா இருந்தாலும் சரி; அதிகாரிகளா இருந்தாலும் சரி… நிச்சயம் கைகோத்து நிப்பாங்க. ‘சத்திய சோதனை’ சொல்லிக்கொடுத்த வழி இது.”

ஜோதிமணியைப் போலவே, அவர் மனைவி சாவித்ரியும் ஆசிரியர். பக்கத்திலுள்ள ரத்தினக்கோட்டையில் மாற்றங்களுக்கான செங்கற்களை அவர் அடுக்கிறார். குழந்தைகள் வெவ்வேறு அரசுப் பள்ளிகளில் படிக்கிறார்கள்.

“அரசுப் பள்ளிக்கூடங்கள் தலைநிமிரணும்னா ஆசிரியர்கள் முதலில் அதைக் கௌரவமாப் பார்க்கணும்; தான் கௌரவமா நடந்துக்கணும்…”

It will also win the Grace of the Lord, so the devotee will be able to do more and enjoy greater health and mental happiness. If every one of you unite and sing the glory of the Lord, it will produce greater harmony and social cohesion than thousand people clamoring and shouting one against the other. Divine Love will flood the area and fertilize all your efforts if all of you sing the Lord’s name together in unison. Do it for some time and you will yourself bear witness to the loving and serene atmosphere.
