Message For The Day…Differnce Between Quality of Life and Standard of Life …

You do not wail that the pot you are holding is a mud pot, if you know that what is contained in it is nectar, is it not? Having a mud pot with nectar is far better than having a gold pot with poison! There is no value to the land of riches or a mansion if the quality of life is deplorable. Even if the standard of life is poor, it does not matter if the way of life is pure, full of love, humility, fear of sin and reverence towards elders. It is easy to restore this way of life provided the Vedas are studied and fostered and its teachings practised in earnestness. The Mother of Vedas (Vedamatha) will foster in you love and kindness. The teachings for right conduct laid down in the Vedas are the best armour to guard you against sorrow and difficulties.

False Notions Most Of Us Think are True !!!!!

Up until the late 16th century, everyone “knew” that the sun and planets revolved around the Earth. Up until the late 19th century, epidemic illnesses such as cholera and the plague were “known” to be caused by a poisonous mist filled with particles from rotting things. Up until the early 20th century, the most common procedure performed by surgeons for thousands of years was bloodletting, because we “knew” that blood drained from the body balanced the whacky humors responsible for poor health. Well alrighty then.
But as misinformed as all that may sound now, our predecessors believed these “facts” with the same certainty that we believe that the Earth is round and hot fudge sundaes make us fat.
Living in a time of such dazzling science and technology, we stand firmly behind our beliefs … even if so much of what we think we know to be correct is actually wrong. Here are some of the more common misconceptions, ideas that may have started as wives’ tales or that came from a faulty study that was later proven wrong. Whatever the case may be, these facts are false.
1. Going out in the cold with a wet head will make you sick
“Put a hat on or you’ll catch your death of a cold,” screeches every micromanaging momma as her charges march off into the winter wonderland. But in numerous studiesaddressing the topic, people who are chilled are no more likely to get sick than those who were not. And a wet or dry head makes no difference. (But these tips can help youstop a cold before it starts.)
2. Vikings wore horned helmets
Is there anything more “Viking warrior” than a helmet fitted with horns? Nary a portrayal shows the seafaring Norse pirates without the iconic headgear. Alas, horned hats were not worn by the warriors. Although the style did exist in the region, they were only used for early ceremonial purposes and had largely faded out by the time of the Vikings. Several major misidentifications got the myth rolling, and by the time costume designers for Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” put horned helmets on the singers in the late 19th century, there was no going back.
3. Sugar makes kids go bonkers
The Journal of the American Medical Association published a review of 23 studies on the subject of kids and sugar, the conclusion: Sugar doesn’t affect behavior. And it’s possible that it is the idea itself that is so ingrained as fact that it affects our perception. Case in point: In one study mothers were told that their sons had consumed a drink with a high sugar content. Although the boys had actually consumed sugar-free drinks, the mothers reported significantly higher levels of hyperactive behavior. That said, some scientists warn that sugar can make you dumb.
4. You lose most of your body heat through your head
Everyone knows that you lose somewhere around 98 percent of your body heat through your head, which is why you have to wear a hat in the cold. Except that you don’t. As reported in The New York Times and elsewhere, the amount of heat released by any part of the body depends mostly on the surface area — on a cold day you would lose more heat through an exposed leg or arm than a bare head.
5. You will get arthritis from cracking your knuckles
It seems reasonable, but it’s not true either. You will not get arthritis from cracking your knuckles. There is no evidence of such an association, and in limited studies performed there was no change in occurrence of arthritis between “habitual knuckle crackers” and “non crackers.” There have been several reports in medical literature that have linked knuckle cracking with injury of the ligaments surrounding the joint or dislocation of the tendons, but not arthritis.
6. Napoleon was short
Napoleon’s height was once commonly given as 5 feet 2 inches, but many historianshave now given him extra height. He was 5 feet 2 inches using French units, but when converted into Imperial units, the kind we are accustomed to, he measured almost 5 feet 7 inches inches tall — which was actually slightly taller than average for a man in France at the time.
7. You have to stretch before exercise
Stretching before exercise is the main way to improve performance and avoid injury, everyone stretches … but researchers have been finding that it actually slows you down. Experts reveal that stretching before a run can result in a 5 percent reduction of efficiency; meanwhile, Italian researchers studying cyclists confirmed that stretching is counterproductive. Furthermore, there has never been sufficient scientific evidence that pre-exercise stretching reduces injury risk.
8. Cholesterol in eggs is bad for the heart
The perceived association between dietary cholesterol and risk for coronary heart disease stems from dietary recommendations proposed in the 1960s that had little scientific evidence, other than the known association between saturated fat and cholesterol and animal studies where cholesterol was fed in amounts far exceeding normal intakes. Since then, study after study has found that dietary cholesterol (the cholesterol found in food) does not negatively raise your body’s cholesterol. It is theconsumption of saturated fat that is the demon here. So eat eggs, don’t eat steak.
9. Dogs age at seven years per one human year
Your 3-year-old dog is 21 years old in human years, right? Not according to experts. The general consensus is that dogs mature faster than humans, reaching the equivalent of 21 years in only two, and then aging slows down to more like four human years per year. “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan’s site recommends this way to calculate your dog’s human-age equivalent: Subtract two from the age, multiply that by four and add 21.
10. George Washington had wooden teeth
Our first president starting losing his teeth in his 20s, but contrary to popular belief, his dentures were not made of wood. Although built-in toothpicks would have been handy, Washington had four sets of dentures that were made from gold, hippopotamus ivory, lead, and human and animal teeth (horse and donkey teeth were common components in the day). Also of note: The dentures had bolts to hold them together and springs to help them open, all the better to eat one of his favorite treats, Mary Washington’s seriously delicious gingerbread.

” Does God Exist ” ?!!!!

A young man who went overseas to study for quite a long time.

When he returned, he asked his parents to find him a religious scholar
or any expert who could answer his 3 Questions.

Finally, his parents were able to find a scholar.

Young man: Who are you? Can you answer my questions?

Scholar: I am one of God willing, I will be able to answer your questions.

Young man: Are you sure? A lot of Professors and experts were not able
to answer my questions.
Scholar: I will try my best, with the help of God .

Young Man: I have 3 questions:
1. Does God exist? If so, show me His shape.
2. What is fate?
3. If Devil was created from the fire, why at the end he will be
thrown to hell that is also created from fire. It certainly will not
hurt him at all, since Devil and the hell were created from fire. Did
God not think of it this far?

Suddenly, the Scholar slapped the young man’s face very hard. Young
Man(feeling pain): Why do you get angry at me?

Scholar: I am not angry. The slap is my answer to your three questions.
Young Man: I really don’t understand.

Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you?
Young Man: Of course, I felt the pain.

Scholar: So do you believe that pain exists?
Young Man: Yes.

Scholar: Show me the shape of the pain!
Young Man: I cannot.

Scholar: That is my first answer. All of us feel God’s existence
without being able to see His shape… Last night, did you dream that
you will be slapped by me?
Young Man: No.

Scholar: Did you ever think that you will get a slap from me, today?

Young Man: No.

Scholar: That is fate my second answer…My hand that I used to slap
you, what is it created from?
Young Man: It is created from flesh.

Scholar: How about your face, what is it created from?
Young Man: Flesh.

Scholar: How do you feel after I slapped you?
Young Man: In pain.

Scholar: That’s it… this is my third answer, Even though Devil and also the hell were created from the fire, if God wants, if God willing , the hell will become a very painful place for devil.

Message For The Day…Need For Pious Intellect and Poised State…

The world today is suffering more from Rajobuddhi (passionate intellect) than Thamas (inertia). People have violent likes and dislikes. They are carried away by noise, show and propaganda. That is why discrimination has become essential. To reach the goal, Sathwabuddhi (pious intellect) is essential. This intellect will lead you to seek the truth calmly and stick to it, unmindful of the consequences. You might have heard people talk about the miracles; of My ‘materialisations’, of My fulfilling all your wants, of My curing illnesses. But they are not so important as the Saathwaguna (poised state) I appreciate, promote and instil. In fact, I confer on you the boons of health and prosperity, only so that you might, with greater enthusiasm and less interruption proceed on the path of spiritual practice.

Indian American “Sri” Srinivasan Creates History as Top US Judge !!!

The India-Srinivasan, 46, currently principal deputy solicitor general of the US, was Thursday confirmed by the Senate by a 97 to 0 vote, as a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Chandigarh-born “trailblazer” Indian-American legal luminary Srikanth ‘Sri’ Srinivasan has made history with the US Senate unanimously confirming him as the first South Asian judge on the powerful appeals court for the American capital.

Srinivasan, 46, currently principal deputy solicitor general of the US, was Thursday confirmed by the Senate by a 97 to 0 vote, as a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often called the nation’s second-highest court.

“Pleased” at the unanimous confirmation of his nominee “the first one to this important court in seven years,” President Barack Obama said “Sri is a trailblazer who personifies the best of America.”

“Born in Chandigarh, India, and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Sri spent nearly two decades as an extraordinary litigator before serving” in his current job, Obama noted predicting, “Now he will serve with distinction on the federal bench.”

“Sri will in fact be the first South Asian American to serve as a circuit court judge in our history,” he said as he pressed the Senate to act quickly to fill the three remaining vacancies on the appeals court “as well as other vacancies across the country”.

The 11-member court has been operating with just seven judges – four Republican and four Democratic nominees – throughout Obama’s tenure.

The influential Washington Post described Srinivasan’s confirmation as significant for Obama “hoping to shift the conservative tilt of the court, which is poised to rule on several key elements of his second-term agenda in the months ahead.”

In fact like many other analysts Post noting that four of the Supreme Court’s current nine justices served on the DC Circuit suggested “With the vote, Srinivasan also becomes a front-runner to be nominated for a Supreme Court vacancy should one arise in the next three years.”

For USA Today “It was just the latest chapter in a stellar legal career that has taken the 46-year-old litigator known as “Sri” to a seat on the nation’s second most powerful court – and given him instant buzz as a potential Supreme Court justice himself.”

Even before his 18-0 approval by Senate Judiciary Committee last month, the New Yorker suggested: “The stakes in this nomination are clear: if Srinivasan passes this test and wins confirmation, he’ll be on the Supreme Court before President Obama’s term.”

Ian Millhiser, a senior constitutional policy analyst at the Centre for American Progress Action Fund agreed that “Srinivasan may indeed emerge as a leading candidate for the Supreme Court.”

“In the mean time,” he suggested there were “ten potential Democratic Supreme Court nominees who aren’t named ‘Sri'”. Among them, he named California’s Indian-African-American Attorney General Kamala Harris, and Indian-American Neal Kumar Katyal, whom Srinivasan succeded.

Srinivasan’s family immigrated to the US when he was four. He grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, where his father was a mathematics professor at the University of Kansas, and his mother taught at the Kansas City Art Institute.

He received his BA with honours and distinction in 1989 from Stanford University and his JD with distinction in 1995 from Stanford Law School, where he was elected to Order of the Coif and served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review.

He received the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Furthering US National Security in 2003 and the Office of the Secretary of Defence Award for Excellence in 2005.

The “Plane ” Truth About Flying ….A Plain Speak !!!!

“PLEASE ensure your seatbelt is securely fastened, your seat is fully upright and all electronic devices are switched off.”

Have you ever wondered why airlines tell you to do these things?

There’s no doubt some aspects of flying are shrouded in mystery, but never fear, we’ve got the answers to 10 things you’ve just got to know about air travel.

1. Does the brace position really work?
There are numerous – and some quite ridiculous – theories about why airlines push the brace position, including that it’s only useful for preserving teeth and thus allowing for easier identification.

The  Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) says more than 70 per cent of airline accidents are survivable. But how many lives are saved by using the brace position? Well CASA cited an incident where a plane carrying 16 passengers crashed. While the rest slept or were reading, one passenger woke up and saw the plane was about to hit trees so he adopted the brace position. He was the only survivor. The absence of fatalities when US Airways Flight 1549 landed in the Hudson River has also been attributed to the position.

The deliberate crash landing of a Boeing 727 into the Mexican desert last year by team of scientists, pilots and safety experts for the documentary The Plane Crash provided more answers. There were three dummies on board: one was seated in the classic brace position with seatbelt fastened, the second had just the seatbelt fastened, and a third had neither. Experts found the first dummy would have survived, the second would have suffered severe head injuries and the third would have died.

Here’s a tip: If you need to brace for impact put your hands on your head, your weaker one over the other stronger one. That way, if something falls on you the stronger hand is likely to be OK as it’s been protected – and you’ll need it to unbuckle your seat belt when the time comes.

2. Is it true that diet cola is harder to pour in the skies?
It’s true, the fizz and the high altitude make diet cola the most difficult drink to pour. Flight attendant and author Heather Poole says: “Of all the drinks we serve, Diet Coke takes the most time to pour – the fizz takes forever to settle at 35,000 feet. In the time it takes me to pour a single cup of Diet Coke, I can serve three passengers a different beverage.”

3. Why do window shutters have to be raised and seats upright upon take-off and landing?
Window shutters are required to be open and seats in the upright position so that cabin crew and passengers can easily identify what is happening outside the plane in the event of an issue during take-off and landing e.g. fire, according to a major Australia airline.

Having the shutters up also allows rescuers to see inside the cabin more easily and locate trapped passengers in the event of an emergency, and lets light in.

And you should obey the crew when they tell you to put your seat upright for take-off and landing – it’s for your own safety. Brian Manning, a flight attendant for US Mesa Airlines explains: “When the seat is up, it is locked. When the seat is back, it’s not locked. In the event of an emergency, an unlocked seat has more force during impact, and the thrusting forward of that seat can cause passenger injury.”

Having seats upright also provides more room to escape and is beneficial for fellow passengers – those seated behind reclined or unlocked seats may not be able to brace themselves properly on impact.

4. Is it true that you’re more likely to survive a plane crash if you’re sitting towards the back?
There’s a one in 90 million chance of being killed in a plane crash, according to the US National Transportation Safety Bureau.

And it’s good news for the masses: It’s safer to sit towards the back of the plane than the front, according to The Plane Crash documentary. When they crashed the plane they found anyone sitting in seat 7A would have been killed – that chair was catapulted 152m from the wreckage in the program.

Anne Evans, a former investigator at the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch, inspected the 727’s black-box data recorder after the crash and said: “It’s safer to sit at the back of the aircraft where the flight recorder is. The front is more vulnerable because that often sees higher impact forces.”

5. Why do they dim the lights during some landings?
Lights are dimmed upon landing so that passengers eyes can adjust to the natural light and in the event of an incident makes identifying sparks or flames easy, according to a major Australian airline.

6. Is alcohol more potent at higher altitudes?
Not true, according to studies. Dr. Bhushan Kapur from the University of Toronto said passengers’ blood alcohol level doesn’t increase in the air. However, people do tend to drink more in a shorter time frame in the skies, which can leave them more impaired. So where does the misconception come from? The onboard effects of hypoxia – less oxygenated conditions due to the low-pressure environment and high altitude – can cause passengers to experience symptoms similar to intoxication.

7. Can plane air make you sick?
Cabin air is a mix of fresh and recirculated air. Air is sucked in through the jet engines, then into a bleed pipe that enters the cabin unfiltered. A study by CASA that ended last year didn’t rule out the possibility that toxicity could occur on flights. According to the study, oils, fluids, fumes and gases could mix with the heated air intended for the air conditioning system due to poor maintenance practices, worn engine oil seals or exhaust fumes from aircraft taxiing or engine start.

While rare, it does happen. In February a British Airways flight made an emergency landing after a pilot because nauseous and incapacitated after smelling toxic oil fumes. The captain and first officer were able to land the plane with the help of oxygen masks. Earlier this year questions were asked over the deaths of two British Airways pilots who died within four days of each other after complaining of being exposed to toxic oil fumes.

Following the incidents the UK Civil Aviation Authority records revealed pilots were putting on oxygen masks at least five times a week to combat suspected “fume events”.

There’s a name for such cases: Aerotoxic syndrome.

8. How much radiation are passengers exposed to during a flight?
People travelling in aircraft may be exposed to more ionising radiation than they would be exposed to on the ground. That’s because when you’re flying between 7000 and 12,000 metres (the typical cruising altitude of a commercial aircraft), the Earth’s atmosphere provides less protection from cosmic radiation.

To put this into perspective, during a seven-hour flight from New York to London travellers receive about the same dose of radiation as a chest X-ray; and from New York to Tokyo, two chest X-rays, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration.

9. What are the best ways to beat jetlag?
What you need to do is reset your internal clock. These tips can help:
1. Try to shift your sleep pattern – go to bed one hour earlier or later depending on which direction you are flying.
2. If you’re going on a really long flight (for instance, from Australia to Europe) take melatonin pills for 2-3 days before the trip.
3. Drink ginger tea.
4. When on the plane go to sleep as soon as possible, don’t take sleeping pills on board and avoid alcohol and coffee.
5. When you arrive stay up until it’s bedtime wherever you are, walk around in the sun and if you must nap keep it under an hour. If you flew eastward, take a low dose of melatonin for three nights before bed. If you flew westward, and find yourself waking up early the first morning there, take a low dose of melatonin. More advice on jetlag here.

10. Can your mobile phone cause a plane crash?
The jury’s still out on this issue, but airlines are erring on the side of caution. Current regulations give crew the power to ban the use of any device that could threaten the safety of an aircraft. Experts say that electromagnetic waves emitted by mobiles can interfere with a plane’s electronics and cause a crash, concerns that were outlined in an investigation by the New York Times.

This guide to evacuations from CASA is worth a look.

Message For The Day….How Viveka ans Buddhi are To Be Utilised….

All that I can tell you about the spiritual disciplines have been told often before; the human capacity, nature, and talents are all ancient possessions and so the advice regarding how to use them is also ancient. The only new thing is the directions in which these talents are wasted, and the way one is playing false to one’s own nature. Man is essentially an animal, endowed with viveka (Discrimination). That is why one is not content with the satisfaction of mere animal needs. One feels some void, some deep discontent and some unslaked thirst, for man is a child of Immortality and so feels that death is not and should not be the end. This viveka urges man to discover answers to the problems that haunt him: “Where did I come from, whither am I journeying, which is the journey’s end?” To find answers to these questions, the intellect (buddhi) has to be kept sharp and clear.

Message For The Day…Sanathana Dharma Shows The Way for Best Possible Living !!!!

Right Conduct (Dharma) is the feet and Realization (Moksha) is the head of every human being. Wealth and Desire (Artha and Kama) are the trunk and the limbs. The tragedy in the present times is that the Head and Feet are ignored while trunk and limbs are reckoned as vital. Enough warning about the tragedy this approach can lead to has been given in the ancient texts. Sanathana Dharma has laid down the rules and regulations for the best possible utilisation of life, but for want of teaching, exposition and example, they have been sadly neglected. The neglect of these rules which give real happiness and peace, is like inflicting injuries on oneself. The land may be rich, but, if life is mean, it is deplorable. It does not matter if the standard of life is poor, provided the way of life is pure, full of love and humility, and is led with fear-of-sin and reverence towards elders.

Newspaper Vendor Of Bangalore Walks In to IIM Kolkata….

As the alarm goes off at 4am, N Shiva Kumar is up on his feet, stacking his bicycle with newspapers. He has to deliver them before the sun appears on the horizon. A habit since Class 6, Shiva’s life is set to change now. Come June 16, this newspaper-boy-turned-vendor will walk down the corridors of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta as a PGP student.

It sounds like a fairy tale, but the TOI vendor who cracked CAT 2012 has indeed grabbed a seat in the premier business school. Shiva, 23, an engineering student from Banaswadi, is the son of an illiterate mother and a father who was a truck driver. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy and for his debt-ridden family of four the Rs 150 he would bring home was a huge relief.

“Every morning people would come home asking my father to return the money he had borrowed. My father had a truck. But there were more liabilities than what he could earn with it. When I was in Class 3 or 4, I sold flowers that my mother strung into garlands by the roadside. It was only later that I found the job of newspaper boy,” said the 8th semester computer science student of Bangalore Institute of Technology.

Shiva managed the part-time job along with school. “I was studying in an ICSE school. In Class 9, I was asked not to come to school till I paid the fees. The next day, I approached the first customer I was delivering the paper to, Krishna Veda Vyasa, and requested him to fund me. He hesitated, and said he didn’t even know me. I asked him to do a background check, and he found I was the topper there. I requested him to pay one term’s fee, but he paid for the entire year. He continued funding me ever since. I owe it all to him,” he said.

He soon found an opportunity to be a vendor and started his own agency when in Class 10. “I’d learnt the tricks of the trade by then. My vendor had some 50 extra copies to sell and I took them from him. That’s how I started,” he said. The 50 copies have now grown to 500. “After school, I would take my cycle and identify new buildings and residents. I would approach them for business and ensured the papers reached before 6am. I had my own targets for a month,” he explained his marketing tactics. He still delivers the paper along with four of his delivery boys.

“It was hard work. I had to get up at 4am every day, deliver the papers and head to school. I had to skip breakfast to be on time, but would still be late. In college, I opted to sit in the last bench during the first hour so I could catch up on some sleep.”

IIM could not have rejected a seat for an aspirant like him. “After my family stabilizes, I want to start a charitable institution, Educate India, by which I can help the underprivileged gain some education. I could achieve this because someone helped me. In turn, I want to help at least 10 people,” he said. Shiva is taking an education loan to fund his IIM course.

At IIM-C, he plans to “work extremely hard” while he specializes in finance. It’s an attitude that has already made a mark on teachers and faculty members at his new school. “We are really impressed with the boy. He will certainly serve as an example to others and we will look forward to teaching him,” said Subir Bhattacharya, chairman of IIM-C’s post graduate programmes.
