President Obama left a moving comment on a ‘Humans of New York’ photo from Iran…

A recent photograph of an Iranian father and his young son posted to the popular “Humans of New York” Facebook page caught the attention of US President Barack Obama.

And on Thursday, Obama — who is presiding over the biggest thaw in US-Iranian relations in decades  — left a comment on the post, saying it “really resonated” with him.

In the original post, the Iranian father wrote about how he knew he was “raising a humanitarian” when he realised his then-5-year-old son had given away two pounds of fresh apricots on their walk home. In his subsequent comment, Obama called it an “inspirational story.”

“One of the most fulfilling things that can happen to you as a parent is to see the values you’ve worked to instill in your kids start to manifest themselves in their actions,” he said. “And this one really resonated with me.”

Obama’s comment from the White House account, signed “-bo,” is below:

Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind “Humans of New York,” is currently travelling in Iran, where he’s been posting the stories of ordinary Iranians. Obama’s comment on the post came a day after he secured enough vote commitments from Democratic senators to ensure that the deal on Iran’s nuclear program would sail through Congress unscathed.

Part of Obama’s gung-ho support for the nuclear deal is the bet that the country’s citizens will lead it down a more moderate path by the time its provisions expire 10-15 years down the road. Obama alluded to this sentiment in his post.

“I’m going to continue doing whatever I can to make this world a place where he and every young person like him can live up to their full potential,” Obama wrote.

The original post is below:

“Today’s his tenth birthday. He’s a very emotional young man. He likes to solve other people’s problems. One time when he was five years old, he came with me to the store and we bought two pounds of fresh apricots. I let him carry the bag home. He walked a little bit behind me the entire way. After awhile, I asked him to hand me an apricot. ‘I can’t,’ he said. ‘I’ve given them all away.’ I knew then that I was raising a humanitarian.”

Meet the Two Security Guards Who are Giving Everyone Life Goals….

Meet the Two Security Guards Who are Giving Everyone Life Goals

Two separate posts on Facebook describe the inspiring security guards – Balinder Singh on the left and Sagar Ashokrao Bhagat on the right.

If finding some kind of Monday motivation has been your goal, this is where you park your search. We’d like to introduce you to two very inspiring security guards – one who uses the streetlight outside the ATM he guards to study, and another, an engineer by qualification, who reads books on Java programming while manning his post at the entrance of a housing complex.

Facebook users Harsh Vats and Sreejesh Krishnan from Haryana and Mumbai respectively narrate their experiences of meeting these two inspiring security guards in separate posts.
Harsh Vats bumped into 20-year-old Balinder Singh, reading a book under a street light, when he went to an ATM to withdraw cash before Raksha Bandhan.

Curious, he asked the security guard what he was reading. Turns out he was preparing for a set of upcoming entrance exams.

Harsh asked Balinder why he chose to sit under the street light and not inside the well-lit ATM, which also had air conditioning. The young guard informed him that the AC was turned off post-midnight, and that he didn’t really mind sitting outside.

Very moved by the 20-year-old, Harsh posted on Facebook asking people to share study material to help the security guard further his dream. So far, his post has been shared by more than 10,000 people.

Like Balinder, Sagar Ashokrao Bhagat, a security guard at Woodland Heights in Mumbai’s Chandivali, has huge aspirations.

In his post, Sreejesh Krishnan explains he met Sagar when he noticed him reading a book stealthily placed between the complex’s vehicle entry register. It was a book on Java programing.
Sagar informed Sreejesh that he was in fact an engineer with a BE degree and was working as a security guard “to keep things going” while he looked for a suitable job.

An impressed Sreejesh also asked him for a resume. Many of those who’ve seen the post have requested Sagar’s CV so as to help him a better job.

NASA Scientist Turns Mars Rover Selfie Into Art….

A ‘selfie’ taken by NASA’s Curiosity Rover has become such a hit that it inspired one of the scientists on the team that created the camera taking the selfie to turn into an artwork.

How Brooklyn girl Chanie Gorkin’s poem became a global sensation….Just Read it…

A HASIDIC girl from Brooklyn, New York, wrote a clever poem that spread like wildfire online and became a hit after it was posted on a wall in London.

Chanie Gorkin, in eleventh grade at the all-girls Lubavitch high school Beth Rivkah in Crown Heights, jotted down the lines for a class assignment last year and then published it on PoetryNation.com.

What happened next is remarkable.

Zachery Stephenson, the events manager at the Nambucca bar on Holloway Road in North London had tacked the poem on a wall, after his cousin in New York had forwarded it in response to a negative Facebook post, US ABC News reports.

There it was seen by Ronnie Joice, who was feeling a “bit worn out” after a day of meetings about a prospective job.

The poem, which at first appears to be a bleak outlook on a bad day, contains a surprise. The ending instructs the reader to go back and re-read from the bottom to the top, which completely reverses its meaning.

Mr Joice was so taken with the clever poem, he photographed and posted it to Twitter, which resulted in thousands of shares on social media.

The uplifting poem — ironically titled “Worst Day Ever?” — has since been translated into multiple languages, including Hebrew, Chinese and Russian. Her father, Baruch Gorkin, posted some of the translations to his Facebook page.

Chanie’s brother, Shimon Gorkin, proudly posted: “That’s my sister!”

Chanie’s mother, Dena Gorkin, confirmed to ABC News that her daughter wrote the poem. She also said Chanie was away at summer camp and unavailable for comment, but Mrs Gorkin has been telling her daughter about the reaction to the poem and “she’s quite overwhelmed.”

One of the major tenets of Hasidic philosophy is that the mind rules over the heart, that we are able to channel our emotions to the positive … that there is God in everything, and it is part of our mission in life to look for the good, and to find it and to spread it,” Mrs Gorkin said.

So, when Chanie was given the assignment to write about her worst day ever, she used her writing skills to turn the question around.

The Worst Day Ever, by Chanie Gorkin

Today was the absolute worst day ever

And don’t try to convince me that

There’s something good in every day

Because, when you take a closer look,

This world is a pretty evil place.

Even if

Some goodness does shine through once in a while

Satisfaction and happiness don’t last.

And it’s not true that

It’s all in the mind and heart

Because

True happiness can be attained

Only if one’s surroundings are good

It’s not true that good exists

I’m sure you can agree that

The reality

Creates

My attitude

It’s all beyond my control

And you’ll never in a million years hear me say

Today was a very good day

Now read it from bottom to top, the other way,

And see what I really feel about my day.

Impact of a Photograph on the Life of a Kid….

When Joyce Torrefranca posted photographs of a young boy on Facebook, she had no idea what an impact that simple action would soon have on the child’s life.

On June 23, the student from Mandaue City, Philippines, shared two photos of a child studying at a makeshift table on a sidewalk. “I got inspired by a kid,” the woman wrote.

Over the following days, Torrefranca’s post went viral, inspiring Filipino news outlet ABS-CBN to track down the child.

The outlet says they managed to locate the boy, identified as 9-year-old Daniel Cabrera, at a store located close to the McDonald’s where the photos of him were taken. Daniel’s mom, Christina Espinosa, is reportedly an employee at the store.

According to AFP, Espinosa, who is a widow, and her three young children have been living at the store ever since their shanty house was destroyed by fire five years ago. Daniel’s mom says she earns just 80 pesos, or about $1.77, a day working at the store and as a domestic helper. She lost her husband in 2013.

Despite the myriad challenges the family has faced, Espinosa says Daniel, who is now in third grade, has always been a dedicated student.

“He is a very studious and determined boy … He would insist on going to school even without his lunch money because I have no money to give,” she told AFP. “He always tells me: ‘Mama, I don’t want to stay poor. I want to reach my dreams.’”

The boy is now being given a much-needed helping hand.

In the last few days, Espinosa says the family has been deluged with donations, school supplies and other gifts.

According to ABS-CBN, a local politician named Samuel Pagdilao has given Daniel a scholarship, and local police have also done their part — giving the family money and buying them groceries.

“We’re overjoyed, I don’t know what I will do with all of these blessings,” Espinosa told AFP. “Now Daniel will not have to suffer just to finish his studies.”

In a recent interview with radio station DZMM, Daniel said that his dream is to become a policeman one day.

“I want … to help the Philippines,” he said.

On her part, Torrefranca has said that she’s amazed at how one “simple photo” could make such a “huge difference.”

“Thank you guys for sharing the photo,” she wrote on Facebook. “With that, we were able to help Daniel in reaching his dreams. I hope Daniel’s story will continue touching our hearts so that we will always be inspired and motivated in every situation we face in life.”

Image of the Day….Lenticular Clouds Look Like UFOs….

Enjoy these photos and a video of beautiful lenticular clouds taken in places around the world, and shared with us by EarthSky friends on Facebook and Google+.

These lens-shaped clouds typically form where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a range of mountains. When this happens, a series of large-scale standing waves may form on the mountain’s downwind side. If the temperature at the crest of the wave drops to the dew point, moisture in the air may condense to form lenticular clouds. As the moist air moves back down into the trough of the wave, the cloud may evaporate back into vapor. So lenticular can appear and disappear relatively quickly. Plus they’re not familiar to people who live in low-lying or flat terrain. And, just to confound things, lenticular clouds have also been known to form in non-mountainous places, as the result of shear winds created by a front. For all of these reasons, lenticular clouds are often mistaken for UFOs (or “visual cover” for UFOs). Enjoy the photos!
