Message For the Day…” How to Meditate …”

Meditation does not mean simply sitting with eyes closed, contemplating on a Form. You may close your eyes, and focus on the form. But if there is some fickleness in the mind while meditating, then it becomes concentration and not contemplation. When the fickle-mindedness fades away, then your concentration becomes steady and turns into contemplation and slowly, you forget both yourself and the Form, and attain Samadhi. Ultimately, there will be no Form – hence it is called Atma. People give it different names. Don’t worry if you are worshipping one Form over another – it is not the end; this is not concentration. Persist and focus on the Form and see that it becomes steady. As you proceed further on the path, your focus becomes fully steady and contemplation blossoms into meditation.

S. Masthan, who has set up shops across the city, is well-versed in the Hindu calendar and festivities

Sixty-year-old S. Masthan is living proof of communal harmony. He also offers the hope that with hard work and perseverance, one can bust the barriers to success in business.

Mr. Masthan is the proprietor of Raja Seeval Store, the most-sought after shop in Velachery for Hindu religious items, for more than three decades.

Masthan, a native of Tirunelveli, recounts the story behind setting up his shop near the Yoga Narasimhar temple on Velachery Main Road, in 1980.

“The locality had a large Brahmin population in those days and they had to travel a long way to Mambalam or Triplicane, to purchase the materials needed for poojas and other rituals, at a time when transportation facilities were poor, if not non existent,” says Mr. Masthan.

That’s when he decided to set up a shop that supplies pooja materials, and it remains there to this date.

Well-versed in the Hindu calendar and festivities, Masthan, who never misses ‘namaaz’ on Fridays, need only be informed of the nature of festivities or religious rites. From the well-stocked shelves of his narrow shop, he gets all the materials ready for his clients.

He notes with pride that most of the Hindu priests in the locality send devotees to his shop to purchase required items.

A number of shops selling religious articles have come up in the area since, but devotees continue to patronise Mr. Masthan’s shop.

Today, he sells the Tamil almanac, the ‘pambu panchangam’, and has also set up branches in various places in the city — Perungalathur, Medavakkam, Urapakkam, Nanganallur, and Keelkattalai.

He has also convinced his five children, including three daughters, to take up the trade.

Mr. Masthan, who cycled several kilometres in his younger days to source the materials demanded by his clients, has a flourishing trade today, but retains the simplicity with which he started out.

He never forgets to greet a regular customer, and treats every new customer equally well.

The Man Who Moved a Mountain !!!….An Inspiring Story !!!

The Man Who Took Down a Mountain

Here is the amazing and inspiring story of a man who single handedly moved a mountain, and only to help others in need.About five decades ago, a landless farmer, Dashrath Manjhi from Gahlor Ghati of Gaya, India, Bihar decided to take into task the difficulties of his villagers who were almost cut off from the rest of the world by rocky hills, almost making the place impassable.

Around 1959, his wife passed away from illness and lack of immediate medical care when there was no way of taking her to the nearest medical center over the 300 feet high hills. Heartbroken after her death, Manji alone resolved to create a pass so that no one person would have to suffer the fate that his wife did.
He sold his goats to purchase chisel, rope and a hammer. This sudden change in his demeanour made him a laughing stock with people who laughed at him, calling him eccentric and crazy.

Unfazed by their remarks, Manji hammered away with consistent determination for 22 years. At the end of his arduous labour, he finally came face to face with his dream: the OTHER SIDE of the HILL! He shortened the distance from 70kms to just onekilometer.

Once this task was accomplished, Dashrath Manji became known as the Mountain Man. Sadly, this  amazing man breathed his last on August 18, 2007 after fighting cancer at New Delhis AII India Institute of Medical Sciences and received a proper state burial.
Dashrath Manji, a man who was mocked and ridiculed for his strong will and determination leaves behind a legacy of strong will and determination, and a much shorter passgeway that his fellow villagers now use every day.

Some invaluable lessons to learn from this story:

1. Patience is the greatest virtue that leads us to success
2. Dream the impossible!
3. Attitude Matters.
4. Stay Positive.
5. Don’t lose heart if people call you mad and crazy for your unique idea/thoughts.

Why Boomerangs Come Back to the Thrower ? …!!!

Why Boomerangs Return to the Thrower

boomerangNon-returning boomerangs have been used for at least 20,000-30,000 years, with the oldest known example carved from a mammoth’s tusk.  These non-returning boomerangs were used for hunting and were carved for straight flight and to stay in the air as long as possible when thrown correctly. The hunter was then able to throw the primitive boomerang great distances and hit an animal to be eaten for dinner. These animals were often small-game, but even the likes of kangaroo or emus can be sufficiently injured by a decently weighted boomerang such that the animal can no longer outrun the hunters.

Possibly while shaping a non-returning boomerang, someone accidentally carved a boomerang into a shape that, when thrown correctly, came careening back toward the owner. It wasn’t exactly useful for hunting or warfare; it was difficult to aim; and if it actually hit its target, it wouldn’t come back anyway.

There is some conjecture that returning boomerangs could have been used for flushing certain game, but there is little in the way of actual evidence to back these claims. As such, most scholars believe that, because returning boomerangs don’t serve much of a functional purpose in hunting, they were simply used for sport, possibly first by the Australian aborigines, though Ancient Egyptians and many other cultures also made them. Tutankhamen actually had a collection of returning (and non-returning) boomerangs.

While there are numerous different ways to make a boomerang, traditionally, returning boomerangs are lightweight, made of wood, and consist of two separate wings which meet at an angle in the middle. That middle section forms the central point around which the wings will be able to spin, stabilizing the flight pattern.

So what makes a returning boomerang come back? Boomerang wings are fashioned much like airplane wings. They are flat on the bottom and precisely rounded on the top, which deflects the air such that there is less air pressure above than below. (For a full explanation of how this works and why the commonly touted explanation, that it’s because the air on top, moving over a curved surface, must move faster as it has to travel a greater distance than the air below to meet up at the other end, isn’t quite correct, see:  How Do Wings Work)

Of course, as anyone who’s ever tried to throw a boomerang knows, it’s not all about the shape. You also have to throw the boomerang correctly in order to get it to come back to you—that is, you need to throw it somewhat vertically, holding it by one wing, with the other wing pointed up (think opposite to how you would throw a Frisbee), with the centre pointing toward you. Here’s why.

As the boomerang spins through the air, the wing at the top of the spin is moving through the air at a faster rate than the wing at the bottom, because it is moving in the direction of the throw while the wing at the bottom is going the other way. The result is that the top portion will generate more lift than the bottom portion as it cuts through the air.

You might think from this extra lift on the top vs. the bottom that a new rotation will be introduced around the center point and that it would still fly in a mostly straight line.  Instead, thanks to its significant angular momentum, this is not the case. The difference in lift between the top and the bottom then creates a torque which ends up tilting the plane of rotation slightly such that the boomerang ends up flying in a curved path through the air. This is more technically known as a torque-induced precession or gyroscopic precession.

Since the torque applied here is going to be reasonably constant through the short flight of the boomerang and the angular momentum likewise stays relatively constant, the boomerang will fly in something of a cone pattern; thus, if thrown correctly and wind or the like doesn’t interfere too much, the boomerang will come right back to you.  For those inexperienced with catching the boomerangs and who start out throwing a relatively heavy one, this is not always a good thing. ;-)

Message For the Day…” Never Get Dejected at any point of Time …”

Never get dejected at any point in time for anything. It is said that there are two losses for the one who is dissatisfied – Asantushto Dvijo Nashtaha. One is they will not have any happiness and second, they will also not be at peace. Why do people feel dissatisfied? People get restless or disheartened, if someone is in a higher position or is wearing better clothes or is more educated than them. Don’t look at someone who is better than you. Compare yourself with someone who is in a lower position than you. Then, you will not develop negative qualities. When you compare yourself with someone better than you, ego and jealousy will certainly enter you. If you see the under privileged and the distressed, and have compassion for them and serve them, you will feel satisfied. Strengthen your empathy and develop noble qualities in this manner.

” It Can Be any one … It Can be YOU too… Spread Few Smiles …”

The young group of teenagers at DexterLab, who usually restrict themselves to the comedy genre, has come up with a very interesting and thought provoking video. A faceless man travels across Mumbai, with the intent of spreading a few smiles.

The best part of the video is where the ‘giving hand’ picks up things from religious places & offers them the the needy instead. The concept strikes a chord because the ‘giving hand’ is faceless: it can be anyone, it can be me, it can be you.
