A person driving a car may concentrate on the road, anxious to save oneself and others from accident. Fear is what induces single-mindedness in this case. But Love is a greater force to aid concentration. Steady and resolute love makes one’s concentration become intense and unshakeable. Faith develops into love and love results in concentration. Prayer is possible and begins to yield fruit, under such conditions. Pray, using the Name as a symbol of the Lord; pray keeping all the waves of the mind stilled. Pray, as the performance of a duty for your very real existence, as the only justification for your coming into the world, as man.

In the sixteenth century, when North American turkeys were first introduced en masse to Europe, there was another bird that was popularly imported throughout Europe and, most relevant to this article, England, called a guinea fowl.  This guinea fowl was imported from Madagascar via the Ottoman Empire.

The merchants who imported the guinea fowl were thus known as “turkey merchants.”  The guinea fowl eventually were popularly referred to as “turkey fowl,” similar to how other product imported through the Ottoman Empire acquired their names, such as “turkey corn,” “turkey wheat,” etc.

The North American turkey was first introduced to Spain in the very early sixteenth century and popularly introduced to all of Europe shortly thereafter.  The animal was thought by many to be a species of the type of guinea fowl that was imported via the Ottoman Empire and thus, began also being called a “turkey fowl” in English, with this eventually being shortened to just “turkey.”

  • One generally considered fictitious origin for naming a turkey such, comes from the Hebrew “tuki” (Hebrew for peacock).  If no one knew anything about the history of the turkey being introduced to the English speaking world, this might seem very plausible.  However, the historical evidence does not back up this “tuki” origin.

Dancing Lion Cubs !!!

These heartwarming pictures show two playful cubs putting their best paws forward for a spot of lion dancing.

Swiping their claws before pouncing forward, the duo move around their ‘dancefloor’ with a sort of hap-hazard grace at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

At one point the pair stand up on their back legs and touch paws – almost as though they’re about to start a ballroom dance.

Roar routine? One cub stands while the other reaches up to place its paws on its partners - perhaps getting ready for a sort of ballroom dance

Then one of the dancers takes a run up – much to the apparent alarm of its partner who watches on with a look of dread in his eyes.

Perhaps the pair were attempting to try out a lift, as performed by professional dancers. Unfortunately there is no photographic evidence as to how it turned out..

Later on, however, it would seem that one of the dancing duo has overdone it and so takes a little rest, lying on its back with its legs stretched up in the air.

Meanwhile its partner waits on patiently – eager for its next spin on the dancefloor.

How many people does it take to change a lightbulb? Well, if it is in Heathrow’s Terminal 5, apparently an entire team of high wire walkers is necessary.

When the vast £4.5billion  terminal was constructed, its designers seemed to have overlooked one basic problem: how to safely change 120,000 lightbulbs when they are up to 120ft above the ground.

Since opening in 2008, not a single bulb has been replaced on its immense single-span roof, and in some areas up to 60 per cent of the lights have blown, making the concourse increasingly gloomy

And an email obtained by news website Exaro suggested that Terminal 5’s owners had been unable to solve the conundrum for some time.

Having tried cherry-pickers and hydraulic boom lifts to replace the downlighters, none were deemed to be practical or safe enough.

But now, a team of specialist wire walkers has been given the job of preventing the lights going out completely.

The email, which was reportedly sent to staff by Vicki O’Brien, head of Heathrow customer service at British Airways, revealed that all the lightbulbs will now be changed in a project lasting four months.

She wrote: ‘As many of you will have seen recently, the departures concourse has been becoming darker than normal in the late afternoons/evenings, as well as in the early mornings.

‘The reason for the poor light is that 60 per cent of the downlighters have failed, and until recently Heathrow had no  viable way to replace them.

‘Various things have been investigated in the past five years, but for a number of reasons none of these were practical or safe.

‘The good news is that Heathrow has now identified a safe and robust way to replace all the lightbulbs, and this is high-level rope work carried out by a specialist company.’

The terminal is a vast building and houses the world’s largest  controlled-lighting system, with 120,000 light fittings and 2,600 sensors designed to switch them off when no motion is detected.

The airport’s operators now plan to replace all the bulbs in one go with LEDs that are expected to last at least five years.

A spokesman for Heathrow said: ‘The current lighting on the Terminal 5 concourse is being replaced with environmentally friendly LED bulbs. Contingency lighting has been used on the concourse while a viable and safe solution for replacing the lights was being agreed.’

A spokeswoman for British  Airways said: ‘We are working with the owners of Heathrow Airport to improve the lighting levels inside Terminal 5 due to concerns over the brightness of the terminal in the winter months.

‘Work has already started on the lighting improvements and we are confident that it will be resolved to our satisfaction very soon.’

She added that she could not confirm whether the email by Vicki O’Brien was genuine.

Just like a fish which can live only when it is immersed in water, when it feels the element all around it, so too man is a being that can live only when immersed in ananda (bliss); one must have ananda not merely at home, in society and in the world but more than all, in the heart. As a matter of fact, the ananda in the heart produces ananda all around; the heart is the spring of joy. That spring has to be touched by constant meditation, recitation and the intermittent dwelling on the glory, the grace and the inexhaustible manifestations of the Lord, that is, smarana, chethana and manana. Hold fast to the goal; the devotee should never turn back. Never give way to doubt or despair.

Is Your Cup Half Full or Half Empty?
If you approach each day with a smile, see the goodness in people, and make lemonade out of lemons, then you are a “half-full person.” You don’t care if it’s going to rain because the clouds are so beautiful. If you’re stuck in traffic, you enjoy the music or your passenger’s company. But if you approach your day with a negative attitude and notice or experience more bad than good, then your approach is half empty. You are your own worst enemy: you sabotage your own fun and your own joy of life. So cut it out. Retrain yourself to notice only the good things in any situation until you rid yourself of this horrible habit. Don’t be a dream killer . . . for yourself or anyone else.
There is always someone else worse off than you. Look around you: your life is full of blessings. Make a list of things you are thankful for: your sight, health, family, food, shelter, a pet, your kids, friends, a good book. If you could even get out of bed this morning, then you are blessed. Do not take all this good fortune for granted. Be thankful for all these blessings.
Try not to use negative words too much like hate, disgusting, sick, ugly, etc.” Notice how things have improved in the world, in your town, in your life. Look for beauty. Try not to be sarcastic. Sarcasm is a “put-down “of something or someone. The way you act in the world is basically a habit. You can retrain your behavior and your thinking, and you will benefit by doing so. Being considerate, kind, and positive is contagious and worth the investment.

If you give love and kindness to others, you will probably find yourself overflowing with love and happiness. But if you give bitterness, cynicism, and negativity, that is what you will attract. In the mirror of life, you are reflected back, so let your goodness shine out.
Even though we are surrounded with love and positive things every day, the negative side of life seems to get a lot more publicity. Too many negative images sap us of our optimism. So don’t make a constant diet of negative people, newscasts, angry music, violent movies, and conflict. (Kids do not benefit from watching too many news shows and violence on TV.) Surround yourself with happy, positive people and situations whenever you can.
Laugh at yourself. Send funny cards to people. Watch funny movies. Enjoy yourself and have some fun (just not at anyone’s expense). Laughter can cure what ails you and make life fun. It’s very good medicine.
Everyone is attracted to happy people. They make us feel better. You can be one of those people. You’ll cheer up both yourself and those around you. Besides, frowning makes wrinkles.

When a plane passes overhead, people start to imagine some of the exotic destinations it may have travelled from.

Now onlookers will know exactly where a flight took off at the exact moment it travels above with the help of British Airways’ new interactive billboards.

The digital screens installed by the airline show a child standing up and pointing to the aircraft as it travels above the sign, and then displays the flight number along with the plane’s starting point.

The boards, which have been installed in Piccadilly Circus and Chiswick in London, were developed by the airline’s global creative technology agency .

They seek to remind people how magical flying can be, by approaching air travel from a child’s perspective.

Specially-designed surveillance technology allows the screens to interact with the aircraft flying overhead.

The system tracks the plane and interrupts the digital display just as it passes over the site, revealing the image of a child pointing at the plane overhead accompanied by its flight number and destination.

For example the screen may read: ‘It’s the BA0234 from Los Angeles’.

‘We’ve all had conversations with friends and family wondering where the planes are going and dream of an amazing holiday or warm destination and this clever technology taps in to that and reminds people how accessible the world can be.’

‘நான் சும்மா வந்து பேசிவிட்டுப் போகிறேன்…’
‘ஏன் அப்படி சொல்கிறீர்கள்?’
‘தலைமை தாங்குவதும், கேட் கீப்பர் வேலையும் ஒன்று தான்…’
‘என்ன அப்படி சொல்லி விட்டீர்கள்!’

ஆனாலும், அண்ணாதுரை விடுதலை செய்யப்படவில்லை. அவருக்கு, பத்து வாரச் சிறை தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டது.


ஒரு கல்யாண வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சியின் போது, கே.பி.சுந்தராம்பாளின் இசை நிகழ்ச்சி நடைபெற்றது. மேடையை சுற்றியிருந்தவர்கள், பூம்புகார் படப் பாடல்களை பாட வேண்டும் என்று, கூக்குரலிட்ட வண்ணமும், எழுதிக் கொடுத்த வண்ணமும் இருந்தனர்.
உடனே, கே.பி.எஸ்., ‘நீங்கள் பூம்புகார் கதையை அறிந்திருப்பீர்கள். கோவலனுடைய முடிவும் உங்களுக்கு தெரியும். ஆதலால், இக்குழந்தைகளை (மணமக்களை) ஆசிர்வதிக்கிற இந்நேரத்தில், அம்மாதிரியான பாடல்களை பாடக் கூடாது என்பது, என் எண்ணம். இவர்கள், நிறையக் குழந்தை குட்டிகளை பெற்று, சுகமாக வாழ வேண்டும் என்று, முருகனை வேண்டிக் கொள்கிறேன். ஆகவே, இன்று மட்டும் என்னை விட்டு விடுங்கள்…’ என்று சொல்லி, ‘பழம் நீயப்பா…’ என்று, முருகனின் பாடல்களை பாட ஆரம்பித்தார். சபையில் ஏற்பட்ட கரவொலி ஆரவாரம் அடங்க வெகு நேரமாகியது.

 

தபால் ஆபீசுக்கு ஒரு கடிதம்… ‘கடவுள், சொர்க்கம்’ என்று, விலாசமிட்டு வந்திருந்தது. அனுப்பியவரின் முகவரி இல்லை. கடவுளுக்கு எப்படிக் கொண்டு போய் சேர்ப்பது… அனுப்பியவருக்கே எப்படி திருப்பி அனுப்புவது… கடிதத்தின் உள்ளே, அனுப்பியவரின் முகவரி இருக்கிறதா என்று பார்க்க. கடிதத்தை உடைத்தனர் தபால் அலுவலக ஊழியர்கள். உள்ளே முகவரியும் இருந்தது. அதை எழுதியவர், தன் கஷ்டத்தை எல்லாம் எழுதி, தனக்கு, 75 ரூபாய் பணம் அனுப்பும்படி, கடவுளிடம், உதவி கேட்டிருந்தார். படித்த, தபால் ஊழியர்கள் மனம் நெகிழ்ந்து, ஆளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் பணம் போட்டு, அவருக்கு, 60 ரூபாய் பணம் அனுப்பினர். இரண்டு நாளில், அவரிடமிருந்து மற்றொரு கடிதம். கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்து எழுதப்பட்டிருந்தது. அதில், ‘கடவுளே…தாங்கள் அனுப்பிய பணத்தில், 15 ரூபாயை, தபால் ஊழியர்கள் திருடிக் கொண்டனர்…’ என்று குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார்.

தீராத கோபம் யாருக்கு லாபம்!
எனக்கு தெரிந்த தனியார் பள்ளி ஒன்றில் நடந்த சம்பவம் இது: அன்று வகுப்பறையில், ஆசிரியை மாணவர்களிடம், ‘மறக்க முடியாத கோபமோ அல்லது மன்னிக்க முடியாத கோபமோ, யார் மீதேனும் உங்களுக்கு இருக்கிறதா, சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைத்தால், யாரையேனும் பழி வாங்கத் துடிக்கிறீர்களா?’ என்று கேட்டார்.
எல்லா மாணவர்களும், ஒரே குரலில், ‘ஆமாம்…’ என்றனர். ஒவ்வொருவரையும் தனித் தனியே அருகில் அழைத்த ஆசிரியை, ‘மன்னிக்கவும், மறக்கவும் முடியாத அளவுக்கு, எத்தனை கோபங்கள் உள்ளன…’ என்று கேட்டார். ஒவ்வொருவரும் பத்து, பதினைந்து என்று அடுக்கிக் கொண்டே போயினர்.
இதையெல்லாம் அமைதியாக கேட்ட ஆசிரியை, அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும் ஒரு சிறு பையைக் கொடுத்து, வகுப்பறையின் மூலையில் இருந்த தக்காளி கூடையைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி, ‘நீங்கள் சொன்ன எண்ணிக்கைப்படி, கூடையில் உள்ள தக்காளிகளை எடுத்து, உங்களுக்குக் கொடுத்த பையில் போட்டுக் கட்டுங்கள்…’ என்றார். மாணவர்களும், தங்களது பையில் தக்காளிகளைப் போட்டு மூட்டையாகக் கட்டிக் கொண்டனர்.
பின், அவர்களிடம், ‘இந்த மூட்டையை எப்போதும் உங்களுடன் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்; துாங்கும் போதும் அருகிலேயே வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்…’ என்று
உத்தரவிட்டார். புரிந்தும், புரியாமலும் மாணவர்கள் தலையாட்டினர்.
ஓரிரு நாட்கள் சென்றன; ஒரு குறையும் இல்லை. ஆனால், அதற்கு அடுத்து வந்த நாட்களில், தக்காளிகள் அழுகி, நாறத்துவங்கின. நாற்றம் அடிக்கும் மூட்டையுடன், வெளியே செல்ல கூச்சப்பட்ட மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியையிடம் சென்று, மூட்டைகளைத் துாக்கி எறிய அனுமதி கேட்டனர்.
மெல்லப் புன்னகைத்த ஆசிரியை, ‘இந்த தக்காளியைப் போன்று தான், உங்கள் மனதுக்குள் இருக்கும் பகைமை உணர்வும், பழி வாங்கும் குணமும் அழுகி, நாறி கொண்டிருக்கிறது. எனவே, பகை – பழியை மறந்து, மன்னித்து விடுவதாக இருந்தால், தக்காளியையும் தூக்கி எறியுங்கள்…’ என்றார். மாணவர்களுக்கு தெளிவு பிறந்தது.
அப்போதே, தக்காளி மூட்டைகளை குப்பைத் தொட்டியில் வீசிய மாணவர்கள், தங்களுக்குள் இருந்த பகை, பொறாமையை மறந்து, ஒருவரையொருவர் ஆரத் தழுவிக் கொண்டனர்.
இந்த தக்காளி கதை மாணவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, பெரியவர்களான நமக்கும் தான்!

Message For the Day…”Everything is HIS ..That is the Eternal Truth “…

Shed the feeling of ‘mine’ and ‘yours!’ – these attitudes are only for temporary identification. Everything is ‘His’ – that is the eternal truth. Be like the headmaster of a school who takes temporary charge of the furniture in the school. The headmaster treats the furniture with diligence and hands over the items when he is transferred or retired. Treat all people and objects, entrusted and endowed to you with due care and diligence as the headmaster treats the furniture. Be always aware that they do not belong to you! Be always aware that the final checking-up is imminent. Have your accounts ready for inspection and handover, and be ready; wait for that moment with joy!
