“SMS” Lingo Takes a Toll On Language Vocabulary !!!

 In ancient times, it used to take ages to deliver and convey messages from one place to another. But, thanks to the massive development in the field of information technology, the world has now turned into a global village where any messages or information is delivered in the speed of light.

SMS, e-mail, social networking sites are now speedy ways to send messages. SMS turns out to be a hit among all as it is an inexpensive way of conveying messages. Unfortunately SMS is now tagged along with its own set of short forms and spellings that are no where the correct form and are known to everyone as ‘SMS lingo’. The students are the most affected ones when it comes to the habit of using SMS language as it saves their time while taking down notes in classroom or while writing assignments, reported Kevin Mendonsa and Saira Kurup for TOI.

They use this SMS lingo without realizing the consequences of it. Most of the time teachers tend to take a closer look at the notes out of curiosity at the speed of the students jotting down notes in class, and are often amazed to find the notes full of SMS jargon. All this happens despite the warnings given by the teachers not to use such language in their academics, especially during exams. Some teachers even correct such mistakes on the spot.

 

The students confessed of not using the SMS lingo deliberately but it is due to their regular use of sending text messages and chatting that makes them mix up with writing the same in exams. Kush Parikh, a class XII student of Prakash School in Ahmedabad is worried and said “Wanna , gonna, nuf (enough), dis and many more have unknowingly become part of my vocabulary and all my efforts to avoid them are in vain. I am looking for a way out.”

Most of the academicians are concerned on the ongoing deterioration of the usage of English language and its grammatical forms due to the passion for SMS shorthand and felt that strong action should be taken, mainly at times of examination. KS Rangappa, vice-chancellor, University of Mysore, expressed “Obsession with SMS lingo is marring the language and evaluators must deduct marks if it is used in exams,” reported TOI.

 

“Some common words you find in notebooks are ‘dat’, thnx’, ‘tmrw’. To curb this problem, we have started deducting their marks,” added Anjali Sharma, coordinator at St Soldier’s School, Mohali.

Deducting marks for using SMS words is also a difficult thing for teachers as more than 70 percent of students commit this mistake. The teachers frequently make the correction themselves.

Sonal Narang, Vice-Principal of Ahmedabad’s Anand Niketan School stated that “The problem starts right from class V and is more serious among class VII and VIII students,” as told to TOI.

On the other hand, the teachers and students of the capital city Delhi asserted that most of its classrooms are free from the SMS lingo mania as the students are aware that such lingo are meant for mobile phone usage only.

With more youth getting hooked on to social media through the smartphones, there is a fear that the English languages might get eroded in the name of ease.

“Plant ” A Solution For Water Woes !!!!

Recycling grey water with the roots of plants like Canna can give you a perennial source of water. Hema Vijay tells you how

In Gandhi Nagar at Adyar, an eight-flat apartment complex revels in the luxury of a perennial ground water source, enabled by a simple plumbing arrangement and a few Canna Lily plants. Here, a PVC pipeline takes grey water (bath water, wash basin water and washing machine run-off water) from the apartment to a narrow Canna plant bed.

As grey water trickles down, it gets purified by the action of the Canna roots and the natural microbes present in the soil, and the treated water enters the ground water table. “This system is absolutely safe and easy. Our bore well has never gone dry, and we have never needed to buy water”, says V.S. Sukumar, who built and lives in this apartment block.

Since grey water accounts for 50-60 per cent of a household’s average daily water consumption of around 920 litres, this apartment recharges its ground water with roughly 4,000 litres of water every day.

Elsewhere in the city, former DGP V. Vaikunth and President of Home Exnora S. Indrakumar too recycle grey water in their homes. Dr. Indukanth S. Ragade, grey water recycling (GWR) expert and author of Self-reliance in Water – A Practical Manual for Town and City Dwellers has installed GWR systems in a few apartments.

At a time when our parched city is looking everywhere for water, these isolated efforts hold out a crucial roadmap

.Make it mandatory?

Countries like Japan and Israel have successfully addressed water shortages by recycling used water. In the US, states like Arizona and New Mexico promote GWR with tax credits. Should GWR be made mandatory in Tamil Nadu? “The law which made rainwater harvesting mandatory in October 2002 also says that grey water has to be recovered in situ and used for flushing of toilets. (chennaimetrowater.com). Known as the TN Municipalities Building Rules Act (1972), it was amended to include RWH and grey water reuse,” says Dr. Sekhar Raghavan, founder, Rain Centre.

In practice, we have unfortunately ignored GWR.

Purification process

“Plants like Canna indica (Kalvazhai), hedychium (sugandhi) and heliconium supply oxygen to the soil in the root zones. Using this oxygen, soil bacteria break down organic compounds in grey water and render the water clean,” says Ragade. Grey water consists of very small quantities of exhausted and unexhausted soaps and detergents, and small quantities of organic salts like washing soda. “Bacteria consume the organic components like Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonate (LABS). Detergents also contain inorganic compounds called STPP (Sodium Tri Poly Phosphate). This acts as a nutrient for the plants and is consumed under aerobic conditions,” says Raghavan. Adds Ragade, “The treated water may be used to recharge groundwater, or collected in dug wells/sumps and used for flushing toilets; it is safe for these uses.” The treated grey water has been tested by the Chennai water and sewerage board (CMWSSB) and found satisfactory.

However, kitchen waste water does not quite work. It contains suspended organic matter that could lead to foul smells; it requires much larger soil spaces (6-8 sq. ft per person). Bath and wash water are safer for recycling.

While organic alternatives are available and preferable, mild cleaning chemicals can still be handled by the natural cleansing action of soil and plant roots. However, do avoid powerful synthetic chemicals and detergents that promise swift action.

Meanwhile, a few recycling residents have been inspired to go totally organic. “I use soap nut powder with ash and a little baking soda, which keeps my vessels spotless; vinegar for cleaning ceramic ware; activated effective microorganisms (AEM) as a toilet cleaning agent; soap nut powder as washing powder, and lemon grass oil for floor cleaning,” says Kavitha Ramakrishnan.

If you quarrel with your spouse and desist from food for a day, that does not count as fasting in the book of God. Also praising one God as great and decrying another is incorrect. Any of these acts reflect the fact that you are unaware of the elementary rules of spiritual discipline. Dhana (wealth) is the currency of the world. Sadhana (Spiritual Practice) is the currency of the spirit. Be an example to others through your conduct – sweet speech, humility, reverence to elders and steadfastness in truth and faith. This way you will influence more people into practicing spirituality; it is better than establishing societies, collecting donations or running temples. The Lord looks for sincerity, simplicity and steady joy in the contemplation of His Name and Form.

IMAGINE not having to deal with airport security, spend hours waiting for your flight or put up with annoying passengers. Even better, what if you never had to pay for a flight again?

Sound too good to be true? Not for this woman.

Meet US travel writer Amber Nolan. After years of corporate work, Amber went backpacking around South America and vowed never to be chained to her desk again.

Amber came up with a radical plan for her life which involved taking the hitchhiking concept to a whole new level … in the skies. She decided to fly to all 50 US states, for free.

So she set up a website called JetHiking.com and began researching her idea. It wasn’t long before she was contacted by a private pilot in New York, who loved her plan and helped get her started.

Amber hitchhiked on her first plane in July last year, flying from Rochester, New York, to Nashville, Tennesse. Since then she’s made it to 31 states, and she won’t stop until she’s flown to them all.

So how does she manage to get pilots to fly her for free?

Amber gets in touch with the pilots of private jets and light aircraft who are planning an upcoming trip and asks to join them. She has to be completely flexible on the destination, date, and time.

“I find most pilots enjoy sharing their passion for aviation with people,” Amber told news.com.au. “They are adventurers too, and want to help be a part of my project so I can reach my goal. They think it’s a cool idea.”

Travelling on smaller planes has its upsides. She even gets to fly them sometimes.

“I always associate travelling on planes with commercial airlines. I think a lot of people do. Long lines, security scans, being miserable in general,” Amber said.

“Also, hitchhiking this way offers an opportunity to see the country from a different perspective that you will not find if you fly commercial airlines.

“We can do a lot of low flying and really see the landscape. Yesterday, I flew up the Hudson River parallel to the New York City skyline at about 1100 feet (335 metres) – just over the bridges and next to the Statue of Liberty.

“On the way to Georgia, I was able to experience some aerobatic rolls in the plane, and often the pilots will let me fly a little to practice – I want to get my license. On a seaplane, we can land on a small lake in the middle of nowhere.

“And when I land at some of these smaller airports, I feel like I am time-travelling to a ‘romantic era’ of aviation.”

Among the states she’s flown to are California, Texas, Arizona, Washington, Maine and Florida.

What about the challenges?

“It isn’t easy and there is a lot of waiting involved,” Amber warns. “I can’t really plan much since I often have no idea where I’m heading to next, and flights get cancelled all the time for weather (or anything really).

“I’ll land in an area and have to find a place to stay on a shoestring budget. The airports are often far away from any public transportation, so getting to and from the airport is challenging and there’s often a lot of walking.

“I have to be totally flexible to just roll with whatever comes my way, and I often rely on the kindness of strangers.”

Her next stop is Maryland and New Jersey, followed by Alaska. She still works as a freelance travel writer, earning enough money – along with her savings – to keep her going during her trips.

Amber is also considering taking her “jethiking” international, and is writing a book.

For you to relish the dish (pappu) it must have enough salt (uppu). But if you add a little extra, it spoils the dish. So too, life becomes very difficult to bear, if you have too much of desire. Limit your desires to your capacity and even among them, have only those that will grant you lasting joy. Do not run after fashion and public approval and strain your resources beyond repair. Also stick to your own code of conduct (Dharma) that regulates your life or the stage you have reached. Do not place your needs and joy first. Consider the joy of others as more important than your own. Respect elders and cultivate cordiality between brothers and sisters, teachers and students, employers and employees. Respect the culture of your land and bring honour to the land you were born in and live in. Nourish your parents, revere them. If you do so, the Lord of the Universe will guard you against harm.

வாலி கடந்து வந்த பாதை…(1931-2013)   கவிஞர் வாலி காலமானார்...! திரையுலகினர் கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலி

கவிஞர் வாலி, 1931 அக்., 29ல் திருச்சிக்கு அருகே உள்ள திருப்பராய்த்துறையில் பிறந்தார். இவரது பெற்றோர் ஸ்ரீனிவாச அய்யங்கார் – பொன்னம்மாள். பின் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்துக்கு குடி பெயர்ந்தார் வாலி. இளம் வயதில் நண்பர்களின் உதவியுடன் நேதாஜி எனும் கையெழுத்து பத்திரிகையை துவக்கினார். அதன் முதல் பிரதியை வெளியிட்டவர் எழுத்தாளர் கல்கி. இதில் பங்கேற்ற பல இளைஞர்களில் ஒருவர் தான், பின்னாளில் புகழ்பெற்ற எழுத்தாளரான சுஜாதா. துவக்க விழாவுக்கு திருச்சி வானொலி நிலைய அதிகாரி பார்த்தசாரதி அவர்களும் வந்திருந்ததாலும், வானொலிக்கு கதைகள் நாடகங்கள் எழுதிக்கொடுக்கும் வாய்ப்பு வாலிக்கு கிடைத்தது. இதன் மூலம் வாலியின் கவிதை திறன் வெளிப்பட்டது.

வாலியானது எப்படி…?

தமிழ் மேல் பற்று கொண்டிருந்த இளம் வயதில் வாலி ஓவியத்தில் ஈடுபாடு மிக்கவராக இருந்தார். பள்ளிப் பருவத்தில், பிரபல ஓவியர் மாலி மீது கொண்ட பற்றினால், தானும் ஒரு சிறந்த ஓவியராக வரவேண்டும் என விரும்பினார். இதையடுத்து நீயும் அவரைப் போல வரவேண்டும் என இவரது பள்ளி நண்பர் பாபு, இவருக்கு வாலி எனப் பெயர் வைத்தார்.

வாலிப கவிஞர்…!

எஸ்.எஸ்.எல்.சி., தேர்ச்சிக்குப் பின், சென்னை ஓவியக் கல்லூரியில் ஒரு வருடப் படிப்பை முடித்தார். இவரை சினிமாவுக்கு பாட்டெழுத அழைத்து வந்தவர் டி.எம்.சவுந்தர்ராஜன். 1958ம் ஆண்டு பாடலாசிரியராக சினிமாவில் கால்பதித்தார். எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., சிவாஜி, ரஜினி, கமல் முதல் இன்றைய தனுஷ், சிம்பு வரை சுமார் மூன்று தலைமுறை சினிமாவிற்கு 10ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பாடல்களை எழுதியுள்ளார். குறிப்பாக எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் சூப்பர்-டூப்பர் ஹிட் பாடல்களை கொடுத்த பெருமைக்குரியவர் வாலி என்று சொல்லலாம். இவரது பாடல்வரிகளில் விஷேசம் என்னவென்றால் தூய தமிழ் வார்த்தைகள் மட்டுமல்லாது போஃக், ஹிப்-ஹாப் போன்ற பாடல்களையும் கலந்து கட்டி தனது பாடல் வரிகளில் கொடுக்கும் வல்லமை படைத்தவர். இன்றைய இளைஞர்களுக்கு ஏற்றவாரும் பாடல்களை கொடுத்தவர்.

இதுக்கு மேல என்னால் முடியாது

அபூர்வ சகோதரர்கள் படத்திற்கு பாடல் வரிகள் எழுதும்போது கமல், காதல் தோல்வியை மையப்படுத்தி ஒரு பாட்டு எழுதுங்கள் என்று வாலியிடம் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். அவரும் சுமார் 5 பாடல்களை கமலுக்கு எழுதி கொடுத்துள்ளார். ஆனால் கமல் திருப்திபடவில்லை. பின்னர் இறுதியாக 6வதாக ஒரு பாட்டை எழுதி கமலிடம் கொடுத்து, இதுக்கு மேல் என்னால் பாடல் எழுத முடியாது என்று சொல்லியுள்ளார். அந்தப்பாடல் தான் உன்ன நெச்சேன் பாட்டு படிச்சேன் என்ற பாடல்… அந்தப்பாடல் தான் தேசிய விருது பெற்றது.

பன்முக வாலி

பாடலாசிரியராக மட்டுமல்லாமல், அவதார புருஷன், பாண்டவர் பூமி, ராமானுஜ காவியம், கிருஷ்ண விஜயம், வாலிப வாலி… உள்ளிட்ட புத்தகங்களையும் எழுதியுள்ளார். மேலும் சத்யா, ஹேராம், பார்த்தாலே பரவசம், பொய்க்கால் குதிரை போன்ற படங்களிலும் நடித்துள்ளார். மேலும் 17 திரைப்படங்களுக்கு, திரைக்கதை, வசனம் எழுதியுள்ளார். வடை மாலை எனும் திரைப்படத்தை, மாருதிராவுடன் சேர்ந்து இயக்கியுள்ளார்.

பிடித்தது

* வெற்றிலை பாக்கு பிரியரான இவர், 15 வயதிலிருந்து தொடர்ந்த இப்பழக்கத்தை, 76 வயது வரை தொடர்ந்தார். பின் நிறுத்திவிட்டார். கவிதை, உரைநடை, சிறுகதை உட்பட, 15 புத்தகங்களை எழுதியுள்ளார்.

* வெள்ளை மற்றும் சந்தன நிற ஆடையை விரும்பும் இவர், இதுவரை, வெளிநாடு எங்கும் சென்றதில்லை. இவருக்கு இஷ்ட தெய்வம், முருகன்; பிடித்த விளையாட்டு, கிரிக்கெட்.

மனம் மாறி வாலி

கவிதையின் இமயமாக கருதப்படும் வாலி இளமைக்காலத்தில் வறுமையின் காரணமாக தனது வாழ்க்கையில் ஒருமுறை தற்கொலை முடிவை எடுத்தார். அப்போது கண்ணதாசன் சுமைதாங்கி என்ற படத்துக்காக எழுதிய’  ‘மயக்கமா  கலக்கமா வாழ்க்கையில் வருத்தமா “என்ற பாடலில் ” உனக்கும் கீழே உள்ளவர் கோடி; நினைத்து பார்த்து நிம்மதி தேடு ” என்ற பாடல் வரியைக் கேட்டு வாலி மனம் மாறி, தற்கொலை முடிவை கைவிட்டார். இதன் பின் தன்னம்பிக்கையுடன் புதிய வாழ்க்கையை தொடங்கினார்.

விருதுகள்…

வாலியின் கலைச்சேவையை பாராட்டி 2007ம் ஆண்டு மத்திய அரசு அவருக்கு பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது வழங்கி கவுரவித்தது. இதுதவிர தமிழக அரசு மாநில விருதுகளை ஐந்து முறை (எங்கள் தங்கம் -1970, இவர்கள் வித்தியாசமானவர்கள் – 1979, வருஷம் பதினாறு, அபூர்வ ராகங்கள் – 1989, கேளடி கண்மணி – 1990, தசாவதாரம் – 2008) பெற்றுள்ளார்.

கடைசி பாடல்…

வசந்தபாலன் இயக்கத்தில் உருவாகி வரும் காவியத்தலைவன் படத்திற்காக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள கோடாளி மூடிச்சு போட்டு… என்று தொடங்கும் பாடல் தான் வாலி எழுதியிருக்கும் கடைசி பட பாடல். இதற்கு ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான் இசையமைத்துள்ளார்.

வாலியின் பிரபலமான பாடல் வரிகள்….

புதிய வானம் புதிய பூமி, ஏமாற்றாதே ஏமாறாதே, வெள்ளிக் கிண்ணம்தான் தங்க கைகளில்,, கண் போன போக்கிலே கால் போகலாமா, நல்ல பேரை வாங்க வேண்டும் பிள்ளைகளே, காற்று வாங்க போனேன் ஒரு கவிதை வாங்கி வந்தேன், நான் ஒரு குழந்தை நீ ஒரு குழந்தை, நான் உன்னை வாழ்த்தி பாடுகிறேன், மன்னிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன், தரைமேல் பிறக்க வைத்தான், எங்களை கண்ணீரில் , இறைவா உன் மாளிகையில், நான் மலரோடு தனியாக ஏன், மூன்றெழுத்தில் என் மூச்சிருக்கும், நான் ஆணையிட்டால், அது நடந்து விட்டால், அம்மா என்றழைக்காத உயிர் இல்லையை, மாதவி பொன்மயிலாள் தோகை விரித்தாள், அந்த நாள் ஞாபகம் நெஞ்சினிலே வந்ததே நண்பனே, கல்லை மட்டும் கண்டால் கடவுள் தெரியாது.

வாலி அவர்கள் இன்று மண்ணுலகை விட்டு சென்றாலும் அவர் தந்த காலத்தால் அழியாத பாடல்கள் பல என்றும் இந்த உலகம் இருக்கும் வரை இருக்கும் என்பது திண்ணம்…!!

The attachment to sensual objects and to the pleasure they give is like the soot that sticks to the inside of the chimney and dims the light. Clean the chimney by namasmarana (repetition of the Lord’s name) every day and the flame will shine for you and others. Also do good deeds and be in good company. Proper atmosphere is very essential for the development of a spiritual aspirant. That is why spiritual seekers in the past left their homes and lived in the hermitages maintained by the sages. This is akin to keeping a pot of water immersed in water. That way, the water in the pot will then not be lost through evaporation. Therefore be careful, that the success you have won in the promotion of virtue, in the conquest of baneful habits and in the assumption of regular disciplines, are not frittered away by trite company, loose talk, cynical criticism or lackadaisical effort.
