Message For The Day…Detachment From Good as well as Bad is the Ultimate …

Udhaseena (detachment marked by renunciation) is a state that is neither complacence nor indifference. It means detachment from good as well as bad. I will explain this with an illustration: When a thorn gets into your foot, you use another thorn to remove the first one. After this you will have to discard both the thorns. You should not keep with you the second thorn though it has helped you in removing the first thorn. This is how you must gradually renounce the good and the bad. We should gradually cut down our relationship with the world. Most importantly do not enter into activities that induce unnecessary relationships, for that will prove detrimental to one’s welfare.

Laughter ….The Best Medicine !!!…. No “Obamacare ” Cover Needed !!!

 AMA & Obamacare

The American Medical Association has weighed in on Obama’s new health care package.

The Allergists were in favor of scratching it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

Meanwhile, Obstetricians felt certain everyone was laboring under a misconception, while the Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while the Pediatricians said, “Oh, grow up!”

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing, and the Internists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow.

The Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would “put a whole new face on the matter”.

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.

Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and those lofty Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington.

Devimahatmya Recitation During Navrathri and Durgapooja ….

The story associated with Goddess Durga and Mahishasura
The story associated with Navratri and Durga Puja is found in the Markandeya Purana. The chapters 81 to 93 in the Markandeya Purana talks about the slaying of demon Mahishasura or Mahisha by Durga and it is referred as Devimahatmya and is recited during the Navaratri and Durga Puja. It symbolized the victory of good over evil. The most famous episode is of Durga killing Mahishasura
Birth of Mahishasura
Legend has it that two sons of Danu called Rambha and Karambha performed penances to gain more powers. Rambha performed the austerities by standing amidst five ritual fires called Panchagni and Karambha by standing in neck-deep in water.
Indra, the lord of the gods, felt threatened by such intense austerities and took the form of a crocodile and killed Karambha. Rambha, who came to know about his brother’s death, increased the intensity of his austerities and won several boons from gods like great brilliance, beauty, invincibility in war. Most importantly, the boon that he will not be killed by humans or Gods or Asuras (demons).
After receiving the boon, he was roaming in the garden of Yaksha and there he fell in love with a female-buffalo. To express his love Rambha took the form of a male-buffalo and copulated with the she-buffalo. But soon a real male buffalo discovered Rambha in the garden and killed him.
Rambha’s inflated ego made him not to ask the boon of invincibility from animals. And an animal happened to be the reason for his death.
The female-buffalo, who was pregnant, decided to kill herself in the funeral pyre of Rambha. She jumped into the pyre and from the pyre sprang up a mighty asura (demon) with the head of a buffalo and human body. This was Mahishasura.
Mahishasura Defeats Gods
Mahishasura defeated the gods and the demons. He attacked the heaven and captured it and made ‘devas’ his slaves. He proclaimed that he is now Indra – the lord of the gods. The gods led by Brahma approached Vishnu and Shiva and appraised them of the situation.
Birth of Goddess Durga
The actions of Mahishasura caused intense anger in the Trimurtis. The anger emerging out of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva combined to the take the shape of a terrible form and this was Durga.
It is said that the flames of fire that gushed out of the eyes of the Trimurtis – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva – formed a mountain, brilliant like a million suns. Out of this mountain, Durga took shape as the goddess more powerful than all the gods. Samasta devanam tejo rasi samudbhavam’ Durga is the brilliance of all the gods.

Captivated by the awe-inspiring Durga, the gods bestowed on her their own characteristic weapons. Shiva – the trident, Vishnu – the discus, Varuna – the conch, Agni – the spear, Yama – the cudgel, Vayu – the bow, Surya – the arrows, Indra – the vajra, Kubera – the mace, Brahma – the water pot, Kala – the sword and Vishwakarma – the axe. Himavan gifted a mountain lion as her vehicle.

Goddess Durga kills Mahishasura
When the goddess was seen by Mahishasura, he fell in love with her and sought to marry her. The goddess promised to marry him, if he defeated her in the battle. A terrible combat ensued and continued for nine days. Finally, Durga assumed the terrifying form of Chandika and pinned Mahishasura down with her foot and pierced his neck with her spear and she cut his head off with her sword.
The legend about the killing of Mahisha is found in many Puranas and therefore there are slight variations in the story. The story is also found in Vamana Purana, Varaha Purana, Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, Devi Bhagavatam and Kalika Purana.

Message For The Day….Talk Sweetly…Talk Only When It is Essential…

The subtle effect of mantras (mystic formulae) mentioned in the Vedas cannot be seen or heard by the senses; they have to be experienced in and through the inner consciousness, the Anthahkarana. The sound of these mantras has the power to transform the impulses and tendencies. The word mantra means ‘that which saves when turned over in the mind’. Repeating the mantra constantly in the mind will keep off wild talk, purposeless conversation, aimless gossip and scandal. Talk only when the talk is most essential and talk only as little as is necessary. Talk sweetly and without any reservations or circumvention. I want all to be convinced of the excellence of these teachings of the Vedas and Shasthras(scriptures).

Inflight Food ….A Down Memory Lane !!!

On this day in 1919, the first airline meal – a three-shilling lunchbox – was served between London and Paris. Here are some more notable moments in the history of plane food

Airline food through the ages
Airline meals were born on October 11, 1919

October 11, 1919: The first airline meals were served on a Handley-Page flight from London to Paris. They were pre-packed lunch boxes at three shillings each (15p).

1936: United Airlines installs the first on-board kitchens to provide air passengers with hot meals. Other airlines soon follow suit.

1950s: The golden age of air travel. Table cloths and silver service. A 1958 promotional video from Pan Am sums it up perfectly. “Spacious cabins, air conditioned but draught-free. Roominess extends to the powder rooms. Near sonic speed but inside, no movement at all. Delicious food adds to the enjoyment. It’s prepared in four simulateously operating galleys, where dishes can be cooked in five-minute ovens. The travail has been taken out of travel.

March 2, 1969: Concorde enters service. Flights on the aircraft – with British Airways and Air France – become renowned for their high-quality cuisine. Champagne, caviar, black truffle, foie gras, and lobster with saffron were served to this guest on one of the model’s final flights, in 2003.

1970s: Airline deregulation sees the cost of tickets fall. Offering the cheapest fare becomes more important than providing the best food and service. Southwest Airlines, the world’s first low-cost carrier, starts flying in 1971.

1973: French airline Union de Transports Aériens recruits chef Raymond Oliver to reevaluate their menus. Airlines begin to favour salty, rich and spicy food that is suited to reheating and retains its flavour at 30,000ft. As explained in our recent Travel Truths feature “Why is plane food so bad?”: “At high altitudes our taste buds simply don’t work properly. The low humidity dries out our nasal passages, and the air pressure desensitises our taste buds, which is why airlines often opt for salty stews or spicy curries.”

1985: Ryanair is founded. It will go on to become the world’s 7th largest airline, with a fleet of more than 300 planes, but will face constant criticism about the cost of its in-flight food and drink. It currently charges £5.50 for a cheese and tomato panini and £3 for a cup of tea.

1987: Robert Crandall, chief executive of American Airlines, reportedly trims $40,000 off the carrier’s annual outgoings by removing a single olive from every salad served in first class.

2001: The website airlinemeals.net launches, giving passengers a forum to discuss plane food, and to post photographs of in-flight suppers. Nearly 30,000 images have been uploaded since.

2001/2002: The September 11 terrorist attacks have an influence on in-flight dining. Airlines begin using plastic cutlery. Some carriers – particularly in the US – suffer financially, prompting many to cut costs by dropping meal services in favour of peanuts and soft drinks.

2006: A plot to blow up at least 10 transatlantic flights using liquid explosives, sees all liquids greater than 100ml banned from flights. Passengers are left with little option but to purchase overpriced drinks from the airport terminal shops or an even more overpriced drink on board their plane. The rules remain in place.

January, 2009: An amusing letter sent to Sir Richard Branson, describing a “culinary journey of hell” on board a Virgin Atlantic flight, goes viral. The meal contained “more mustard than any man could consume in a month”, potatoes “passed through the digestive tract of a bird”, a “cuboid of beige matter”, and “a dessert with peas in”.

July, 2009: British Airways scraps free meals on thousands of short-haul flights in an attempt to cut losses, further blurring the lines between full-service and no-frills carriers. This year the airline began charging passengers more when they check in a bag.

2011: British Airways gets help from Heston Blumenthal, of Fat Duck fame, for its in-flight offerings – a partnership that was recorded for the Channel 4 documentary Heston’s Mission Impossible. Other airlines also seek help from celebrity chefs. Singapore Airlines sign up Carlo Cracco, a two-star Michelin chef in Milan, and Air France employs Joel Robuchon.

December, 2012: The Japanese flag carrier, Japan Airlines, serves Kentucky Fried Chicken to its passengers over the Christmas period. In Japan, the restaurant’s food is a surprisingly popular part of the festival season.

April 2013: Air Baltic unveils a novel new food ordering system that allows customers to choose every aspect of their in-flight meal when they book their seat.

July 2013: A report by Travelsupermarket.com reveals that airlines charge up to 2,600 per cent more than supermarkets for in-flight food and drink.
