“Navratri “….A Festival With Many Faces !!!

The dancer bommai is a prominent part of golu decorations in Southern India

Navratri is celebrated for nine nights and ten days during which the nine forms of Shakti or Devi are worshipped. The tenth day, which is considered the most auspicious, is celebrated as Vijayadasami or Dussehra.

From worshipping golu dolls and sharing Navratri goodies to feeding nine young girls and putting a smile on their faces, each of the nine days of the colourful festival has something new to offer. Find out how Navratri is celebrated in different parts of Southern India.

In the south, especially in Tamil Nadu, the Navratri Golu is an important part of the celebrations.

The pride and joy that is felt by displaying your colourful dolls, some of which have been in the family for generations, is simply incomparable.

“I have a beautiful 80-year-old Subramanya Swamy doll in my collection,” says a proud Revathi from Gandhi Nagar, Adayar, who is already in the midst of a very tight schedule.

During Kanya Pooja, nine young girls are served food and goodies

During Ayudha Pooja, automobiles are machines are worshipped

Throughout Southern India, the ninth day of the Navratri festival is celebrated as Saraswati puja or Ayudha (weapon/machine) puja.

On this day, all tools and machines, including vehicles and all implements that help us earn our livelihood are worshipped.

Rajpal, proprietor of a popular hardware shop in Perambur, who celebrates this festival every year says, “While most festivals are celebrated at home, Ayudha Puja is celebrated at the place of work. We dust, clean, wash, and sometimes even paint all the tools used in the shop, and apply sandalwood paste and vermilion on them. Even our delivery vans and lorries are washed and decorated, and poojas are performed for them. We then distribute sweets to all our workers to thank them for their service and sometimes also burst a few crackers.”

The ritual of ‘Vidyarambham’ or introducing the children to the world of knowledge is another common practice followed on Vijayadasami day.

A Anuradha of Velachery who is a trained Montessori teacher claims that most parents prefer to enroll their children in school during this occasion.

“We usually have a lot of registrations on this day. Children are mostly accompanied by their grandparents and are taught to write their first alphabet by holding their fingers and writing the letters in a plate filled with rice. It is believed that starting anything new, be it education or a business venture on Vijayadasami day ensures success and prosperity. At home, on Saraswathi Puja day, we keep the books, pens, pencils, etc in the prayer room and worship them.”

Parvathy Panicker from Shoranur, Kerala also identifies with this custom of Vidyarambham.

Meet Susan Bennett ….Lady Behind the Voice of “Siri” in US !!!

Susan Bennett, the woman behind the voice of Siri in the US Photo: CNN
 Susan Bennett
Hello Siri, who are you? The voice-activated “personal assistant” on Apple’s iPhone, a cultural phenomenon of the cyber era famous for her useful and not-so-useful responses to requests for information, continues to decline to answer that question to American callers.

But a voice-over actor from suburban Atlanta has now come forward to identify herself as the sound of Siri in the US.

With Apple introducing variations on the classic Siri and growing Internet speculation about her identity, Susan Bennett broke cover as the original voice of the ground-breaking technology after another actor was wrongly named.

“It seemed like everyone was clamouring to find out who the real voice behind Siri is, and so I thought, well, you know, what the heck? This is the time,” she told CNN.

Apple, which is renowned for its commercial secrecy, has not confirmed her name. But audio experts and industry professionals said that they were “100 per cent” certain that Siri is indeed Ms Bennett, who has also given voice to airline announcements and GPS directions and recorded countless commercials.

The phone application gives users personalised answers to questions about everything from history to restaurants as software draws information from many sources

For Miss Bennett, the painstaking process that began in 2005, long before anyone had heard of the iPhone, when she was approached by an automated voice technology company.

For spent four hours a day, every day, in her home recording booth reading and recording nonsensical phrases and sentences from which the experts separated out her vowels, consonants, syllables and diphthongs, and adapted her pitch and speed.

In a process called concatenation, these snippets were used to build the words and sentences with which Siri answers questions.

Miss Bennett also revealed why some of Siri’s responses sometimes seem to be delivered with a slightly exasperated or sardonic air.

“There are some people that just can read hour upon hour upon hour, and it’s not a problem, ” she said. “For me, I get extremely bored … So I just take breaks. That’s one of the reasons why Siri might sometimes sound like she has a bit of an attitude. Those sounds might have been recorded the last 15 minutes of those four hours.”

Ms Bennett did not know how the recordings would be used and took on a series of other commitments over the next six years. Then, after Apple released the iPhone 4S, the model with which Siri made her debut in 2011, a colleague called her and asked if it was her voice.

She did not have the new device but went online and listened to video clips. The voice was indisputably hers, she said.

The name Siri is Norwegian, meaning “beautiful woman who leads you to victory”, and comes from the intended name for the original developer’s first child

Ms Bennett made her start in her niche business 40 years ago as the voice in commercials of First National Bank’s “Tillie the All-Time Teller”, the first ATM machine.

“I began my career as a machine many years ago,” she noted. “I’m sure that you hear my voice at some point every day.”

And she told CNN that she thinks that one day, every one could be their own Siri.”I really see a time when you’ll probably be able to put your own voice on your phone and have your own voice talk back to you,” she said. “Which I’m used to, but maybe you aren’t.”

05-10-2013.
Navarathiri Special

My Creator …God …. is a Perfect Design Engineer !!!…. Says a Camel !!!

The Amazing Camel!!!
Meet the Very Technical, Highly Engineered Dromedary Camel.

When I’m hungry, I’ll eat almost anything-
A leather bridle, a piece of rope, my master’s tent,
Or a pair of shoes.

My mouth is so tough a thorny cactus doesn’t bother it.
I love to chow down grass and other plants
That grow here on the Arabian desert

I’m a dromedary camel, the one-hump kind
That lives on hot deserts in the Middle East .

My hump, all eighty pounds of it,
Is filled with fat – my body fuel – not water as some people believe.
My Mighty Maker gave it to me because
He knew I wouldn’t always be able to find food

As I travel across the hot sands.
When I don’t find any chow, my body automatically
Takes fat from the hump, feeds my system,
And keeps me going strong.
This is my emergency food supply.

If I can’t find any plants to munch, my body uses up my hump.
When the hump gets smaller, it starts to tip to one side.
But when I get to a nice oasis and begin to eat again,
My hump soon builds back to normal.
I’ve been known to drink twenty-seven gallons of water in ten minutes.
My Master Designer made me in such a fantastic way that
In a matter of minutes all the water I’ve swallowed
Travels to the billions of microscopic cells that make up my flesh.

Naturally, the water I swallow first goes into my stomach.
There thirsty blood vessels absorb and carry it to every part of my body.
Scientists have tested my stomach and found it empty
Ten minutes after I’ve drunk twenty gallons.
In an eight hour day, I can carry a four hundred pound load
A hundred miles across a hot, dry desert
And not stop once for a drink or something to eat.

In fact, I’ve been known to go eight days without a drink,
But then I look like a wreck.
I lose 227 pounds, my ribs show through my skin,
And I look terribly skinny.

But I feel great!
I look thin because the billions of cells lose their water.
They’re no longer fat.
They’re flat.

Normally my blood contains 94 percent water, just like yours.
But when I can’t find any water to drink,
The heat of the sun gradually robs a little water out of my blood.
Scientists have found that
My blood can lose up to 40 percent of its water,
And I’m still healthy.
Doctor’s say human blood has to stay very close to 94 percent water.
If you lose 5 percent of it, you can’t see anymore;
10 percent, you can’t hear and you go insane;
12 percent, your blood is as thick as molasses
And your heart can’t pump the thick stuff.
It stops, and you’re dead.

But that’s not true with me.
Why?
Scientists say my blood is different.
My red cells are elongated.
Yours are round.
Maybe that’s what makes the difference

This proves I’m designed for the desert,
Or the desert is designed for me.
Did you ever hear of a design without a Designer?

After I find a water hole,
I’ll drink for about ten minutes
And my skinny body starts to change almost immediately.
In that short time my body fills out nicely,
I don’t look skinny anymore,
And I gain back the 227 pounds I lost.

Even though I lose a lot of water on the desert,
My body conserves it too.
Way in the beginning when my Intelligent Engineer made me, he gave me a specially designed nose that saves water.
When I exhale, I don’t lose much.
My nose traps that warm, moist air from my lungs
And absorbs it in my nasal membranes.

Tiny blood vessels in those membranes take that back into my blood.
How’s that for a recycling system? Pretty cool, isn’t it.
It works because my nose is cool.
My cool nose changes that warm moisture in the air
From my lungs into water.

But how does my nose get cool?
I breath in hot dry desert air,
And it goes through my wet nasal passages.
This produces a cooling effect, and my nose stays as much as 18 degrees cooler than the rest of my body.
I love to travel the beautiful sand dunes.
It’s really quite easy, because
My Creator gave me specially engineered sand shoes for feet.
My hooves are wide, and they get even wider when I step on them.
Each foot has two long, bony toes
with tough, leathery skin between my soles,
My feet are a little like webbed feet.

They won’t let me sink into the soft, drifting sand.
This is good, because often my master wants me to carry him
one hundred miles across the desert in just one day.
(I troop about ten miles per hour.)

Sometimes a big windstorm comes out of nowhere,
bringing flying sand with it.
My Master Designer put special muscles in my nostrils
that close the openings, keeping sand out of my nose
but still allowing me enough air to breathe.

My eyelashes arch down over my eyes like screens,
keeping the sand and sun out but still letting me see clearly.
If a grain of sand slips through and gets in my eye,
the Creator took care of that too.
He gave me an inner eyelid that automatically
wipes the sand off my eyeball just like a windshield wiper.

Some people think I’m conceited because I always walk around
with my head held high and my nose in the air.

But that’s just because of the way I’m made.
My eyebrows are so thick and bushy
I have to hold my head high to peek out from underneath them.
I’m glad I have them though.
They shade my eyes from the bright sun.

Desert people depend on me for many things.
Not only am I their best form of transportation,
but I’m also their grocery store.

Mrs. Camel gives very rich milk that people make into butter and cheese.

I shed my thick fur coat once a year, and that can be woven into cloth.

A few young camels are used for beef, but I don’t like to talk about that.

For a long time we camels have been called the “ships of the desert” because of the way we sway from side to side when we trot. Some of our riders get seasick.
I sway from side to side because of the way my legs work.
Both legs on one side move forward at the same time,
elevating that side.
My “left, right left, right” motion makes my rider feel like
he is in a rocking chair going sideways.

When I was six months old, special knee pads started to grow on my front legs. The Intelligent Creator knew I had to have them. They help me lower my 1000 pounds to the ground.

If I didn’t have them, My knees would soon become sore and infected, And I could never lie down.
I’d die of exhaustion.

By the way, I don’t get thick knee pads because I fall on my knees. I fall on my knees because I already have these tough pads. Someone very Great thought of me and knew I needed them. He designed them into my genes.
It’s real difficult for me to understand
how some people say I evolved into what I now am.

I’m very technical, highly engineered, dromedary camel.
Things like me don’t just happen.

Thanks to the Creator God for designing me  in such a way for my existence in my environment !!!!

Message For The Day…Respect Your Mother and Show Equal Regard &Reverence to All Women…

Consider it your foremost duty to revere your mother as Divine and serve her. If you cannot respect your mother, who bore you for nine months, brought you forth into the world and cares for you, whom else would you respect? Maternal love is akin to that of the Creator who projects and protects this infinite cosmos in countless ways. You may choose to worship the Divine in the form of a Goddess. Another may worship and adore God in a different form. You should note that the forms in which the Divine is worshipped by others are as important as your own chosen deity. If, on the contrary, you criticize or cast a slur on the deities worshipped by others, you are committing a grievous sin. Similarly, respect and show equal regard and reverence to all mothers (women) as you would to your own mother.

Sathya Sai Baba

Message For The Day… Have a Meal of Good Acts of Service,& Divine Thoughts Daily…

Prayer is the very breath of religion; for, it brings man and God nearer and nearer to each other. Meditation (dhyana) is the process of listening to the Song Celestial, the flute of Krishna, with the mental ears alert on the melody. Just as every day you engage in exercises and consume tonics, calculating the intake of calories and vitamins, paying meticulous attention to the nutritional value of the food, pay attention also to the intake of impressions into the mind, whether they debilitate or strengthen, whether they add to the power of resistance of the mind against the viruses – greed, envy, hatred, pride, malice, etc. Have a meal of good acts of service, divine thoughts, and drink the juice of Love (Prema rasa), so that they may be washed down, and digested well. Then, you can be shining in mental health, happiness and wholesomeness.

Message For The Day….Serve the Society, Help The Poor and Needy in Distress…

Today while Science is making rapid strides, morally people are going down. Selfishness and self-interest dominate every one of the many activities. The unlimited proliferation of desires is the root cause of people’s misery and ruination. If you follow two main principles, you can reach the goal of human life: Sarva jiva namaskaaram Keshavam prathi gachathi – the reverence shown to every being reaches God. Sarva jiva thiraskaaram Keshavam prathi gachathi – similarly, insult to any beings amounts to insulting God. Understand and internalize the Omnipresence of the Lord. In the Gita, Krishna declares that sacrificing the fruits of your actions is the best and easiest way of realizing God. Sacrifice (Thyaga) is the only means of attaining liberation. Serve the society, help the poor and needy in distress, and manifest the human quality of compassion.
