Message for the Day…” Our Culture teaches that one must never lose Hope …”

Bharatiyas lead lives of hope. The Bharatiya culture teaches that one must never lose hope. To suffer from lack of faith and to lose hope is not only losing all the strength within, but it also amounts to demeaning the human birth. Utsaham (Enthusiasm) and Shraddha(earnestness and interest) are things which will show the way for the progress of man. Every individual having such Utsaham andShraddha is sure to achieve success and attain glory in any kind of work undertaken. It is also said that one who possesses thisShraddha will attain wisdom too (Shraddhavan Labhate Jnanam). So we should make an attempt to go through the journey of our life with interest and enthusiasm.

Never Forget the Intrinsic value of Grandparents to their Grandchildren…!!!

I’ve always had a strong bond with my grandchildren, but I didn’t quite realize just how valuable that bond really is – particularly to them – until I came across a body of research that has observed the causes and effects of the beautiful relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren.

2d14d3c9-cbe0-4c53-bb71-661aad8827b6

While the love of a parent for their child is something that cannot be eclipsed, a grandparent’s love is likely to be just as strong, yet different. For instance, a grandparent does not have to deal with the daily pressure of parenting, thus the bond that they forge with a grandchild is both very close and very strong. Read on to learn more about the significance of these relationships:

The New Study

Researchers at Brigham Young University in the US examined the role of grandparents in child development. The research sample consisted of 408 fifth-graders, who were asked a series of questions about the relationship they have with their grandparents. Examples of the questions included whether they sought important advice from their grandparents when they needed it, or whether they felt comfortable discussing important problems with them. The same questions were posed to the fifth-graders one year after the initial question and answer sessions.

One of the conclusions that the study came to was that the emotional relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren had a significant impact on their academic, psychological and social development. Participating children who had grandparents that were highly-engaged in their lives were found to be more sociable, engaged at school and showed more compassion and kindness than those who didn’t have a close relationship with their grandparents.

Another conclusion arrived at by the researchers was that children with more affectionate grandparents tended to have a higher level of self-confidence, which had a long-term positive impact on their lives.

Demographic considerations were shown to have little significance in the study. Strong grandparent-grandchild relationships were found regardless of whether the child lived in a single or two-parent household. Income differences were also shown to have a negligible impact on the strength of the relationships. In fact, grandparents that lived in separate households to their grandchildren were found to have the best relationship of all.

Furthermore, the researchers were emboldened enough by the study’s findings to propose that grandparent-grandchild relationships are even more important than parent-child relationships. This is because children having regular contact with their grandparents meant that they were more likely to have developed the ability to think beyond themselves, and their immediate circumstances.

Grandparents as Protectors – A Specific Example

A particular instance in which the value of a strong grandparent-grandchild relationship can be observed is when the grandchild or grandchildren are exposed to high-risk situations, such as experiencing poverty or going through a traumatic family event.

An article published in the University of Florida’s Family, Youth and Consumer Sciences newsletter back in 2007, explored the impact of the grandparent-grandchild relationship on the negative effects that maternal depression can have on a child.

Depressed mothers and behaviors associated with being in that state were found to inhibit cognitive development in their children, especially with regard to teenagers. Furthermore, school-aged children and teenagers were shown as far more likely to be depressed as adults.

A further study in this specific subject area, conducted by Silverstein & Ruiz and published in Family Relations in 2006, found that children who had strong grandparent-grandchild relationships in their lives were less likely to suffer the ill effects of having a depressed mother once they reached adulthood. This is a clear indication of the positive effects that a strong grandparent-grandchild relationship can have on a child that’s going through a difficult time at home.

Devon Island: Mars on Earth….!!!

Devon Island in Baffin Bay, belonging to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, is the largest uninhabited island on Earth, and for good reasons. The ground remains frozen for almost the entire year, particularly the eastern third of the island which is permanently covered by an ice cap some 500 to 700 meters thick. For only a brief period, lasting 45-50 days, during the height of summer, the ground is snow-free. Summer temperature rises barely about 8°C. The average annual temperature is -16°C. In other words, Devon Island is a barren wasteland, dominated by frost-shattered rocks and nearly devoid of plants and animals. But for scientist and researchers, Devon Island is an extremely interesting place. Its desert setting and harsh climate is very similar to conditions on Mars.

Since 2001, Devon Island has been the summer home for a group of people working on an international research project called the Haughton Mars Project (HMP) that studies how human explorers might live and work on other planetary objects, in particular on Mars.

“Devon Island’s barren terrain, freezing temperatures, isolation, and remoteness offer NASA scientists and personnel a number of unique research opportunities,” reads the project’s information page on NASA’s website. “Other factors, such as the Arctic day and night cycle and restricted logistics and communications capabilities, offer fitting analogs for the challenges that crewmembers will likely face on long-duration space flights.”

Operated by the Mars Society and primarily funded by NASA, the research is based out of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS), located on a ridge overlooking the Haughton impact crater, a 23 km diameter crater formed approximately 39 million years ago when a 2 km diameter projectile slammed into the earth. The incident was so violent that rocks as far below as 1.7 km was brought up to the surface. Because there is no flowing water due to the freezing temperature, weathering is minimal. As such, Haughton retains many geological features that craters elsewhere lose to erosion. The Haughton impact crater area is said to have one of the most Mars-like terrain on earth.

Devon Island is not entirely devoid of life. The Truelove Lowland area, on the northeast coast of Devon Island, is relatively warm and wet and has some vegetation and, surprisingly, some wildlife too. In fact, the high summer temperature of 8°C and those 50 days of snow free ground occur in this area. The lowlands are poorly drained favoring the growth of some moss over which Musk-Oxen graze year-round. The cold and wet soil is inhabited by invertebrates such as worms, protozoa, midge and fly larvae. The island also has a few bird population.

Message for the Day…” A Body devoid of Divine strength is equivalent to dust…’

The country is not made up of dust. It is a conglomeration of human beings. It is the human beings that give it the name of a country. If there are no human beings, it is not called a country. A country is very much like a human body. The divine strength of the country is the human nature in the body. If there is no divine strength in the human body, what is the use of this body? A body devoid of divine strength is equivalent to dust. The human form and human qualities are like the negative and the positive. If the unity and the oneness of these two aspects are not properly brought about, then both of them are useless. To make an attempt to transform the human nature in yourself and elevate it to divine nature should be the purpose of all the education that you wish to have.

Image of the Day…Lotus Flower !

“The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest mud” –Buddhist Proverb
The lotus flower is one of the most remarkable creations of nature. Its beauty lies in its purity, because this magnificent flower emerges from the dirty and muddy bottom of a pond, yet still remains untouched and unstained by its soiled surroundings.

This notable feat has ensured that the lotus is considered an embodiment of perfection in various Asian religions and cultures, with particular reference to Buddhism and Hinduism. This unique quality is said to symbolize the human who rises from the darkness of the world into a new way of thinking and living.

Message for the Day…” When Divinity dons the garb of a human body …”

When Divinity dons the garb of a human body, people are thickly blanketed by illusion and become blind to the Divine Principle. Even Yashoda was no exception to this. Once Balarama complained to Mother Yashoda that Krishna was eating mud. When questioned by Yashoda, little Krishna made a startling statement, “Oh mother dear! Am I an infant to eat mud?” Poor Yashoda failed to fathom the depth of this wonderful divine revelation. She demanded that Krishna open His mouth, so that she could verify herself. Little Krishna opened His mouth wide. To her utter shock and amazement, Yashoda saw heavenly spheres revolving in Krishna’s mouth. That instant she realised that Krishna was verily God Himself. However as soon as Krishna closed His mouth and stood before her with an innocent look, she forgot about His Divinity, hugged Him, and treated Him like an ordinary child

Where red Mars looks blue

Most images of Mars show colors homogenized by red dust and regolith. This infrared-red-blue color image shows Mars’ bedrock … and many colors.

Mars is the red planet, but it turns out that many images we see of it show Mars’ colors ashomogenized by the this world’s reddish dust and regolith. This new image from the HiRISE camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter – taken on February 5, 2016 – shows fantastic colors on Mars.

HiRISE stands for High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, and the camera team explained:

Here the bedrock is very well exposed, except where there are sand dunes.

The rocks also have diverse compositions, which produce different colors in HiRISE infrared-red-blue color images.

Message for the Day….”When our ignorance gets extinguished ….” ?

The Ramayana unfolds the story of Rama. It is also the story of Divinity. Further, the Ramayana is the epic that unfolds the story of Sita, which is that of the individual self. The third aspect of the Ramayana is the annihilation of Ravana. The destruction of Ravana signifies the destruction of ignorance. Ignorance is extinguished when we realise perfectly the relationship between the individual self and the Absolute Self. There are three syllables ‘ra, aa, and ma’ in the word Rama. ‘Ra’ signifies the principle of fire; ‘aa’ signifies the principle of the Sun; ‘ma’ signifies the principle of the Moon. The Sun principle dispels the darkness of ignorance. The Moon principle cools the inner heart. And the fire principle destroys illusion.
