Why Boomerangs Come Back to the Thrower ? …!!!

Why Boomerangs Return to the Thrower

boomerangNon-returning boomerangs have been used for at least 20,000-30,000 years, with the oldest known example carved from a mammoth’s tusk.  These non-returning boomerangs were used for hunting and were carved for straight flight and to stay in the air as long as possible when thrown correctly. The hunter was then able to throw the primitive boomerang great distances and hit an animal to be eaten for dinner. These animals were often small-game, but even the likes of kangaroo or emus can be sufficiently injured by a decently weighted boomerang such that the animal can no longer outrun the hunters.

Possibly while shaping a non-returning boomerang, someone accidentally carved a boomerang into a shape that, when thrown correctly, came careening back toward the owner. It wasn’t exactly useful for hunting or warfare; it was difficult to aim; and if it actually hit its target, it wouldn’t come back anyway.

There is some conjecture that returning boomerangs could have been used for flushing certain game, but there is little in the way of actual evidence to back these claims. As such, most scholars believe that, because returning boomerangs don’t serve much of a functional purpose in hunting, they were simply used for sport, possibly first by the Australian aborigines, though Ancient Egyptians and many other cultures also made them. Tutankhamen actually had a collection of returning (and non-returning) boomerangs.

While there are numerous different ways to make a boomerang, traditionally, returning boomerangs are lightweight, made of wood, and consist of two separate wings which meet at an angle in the middle. That middle section forms the central point around which the wings will be able to spin, stabilizing the flight pattern.

So what makes a returning boomerang come back? Boomerang wings are fashioned much like airplane wings. They are flat on the bottom and precisely rounded on the top, which deflects the air such that there is less air pressure above than below. (For a full explanation of how this works and why the commonly touted explanation, that it’s because the air on top, moving over a curved surface, must move faster as it has to travel a greater distance than the air below to meet up at the other end, isn’t quite correct, see:  How Do Wings Work)

Of course, as anyone who’s ever tried to throw a boomerang knows, it’s not all about the shape. You also have to throw the boomerang correctly in order to get it to come back to you—that is, you need to throw it somewhat vertically, holding it by one wing, with the other wing pointed up (think opposite to how you would throw a Frisbee), with the centre pointing toward you. Here’s why.

As the boomerang spins through the air, the wing at the top of the spin is moving through the air at a faster rate than the wing at the bottom, because it is moving in the direction of the throw while the wing at the bottom is going the other way. The result is that the top portion will generate more lift than the bottom portion as it cuts through the air.

You might think from this extra lift on the top vs. the bottom that a new rotation will be introduced around the center point and that it would still fly in a mostly straight line.  Instead, thanks to its significant angular momentum, this is not the case. The difference in lift between the top and the bottom then creates a torque which ends up tilting the plane of rotation slightly such that the boomerang ends up flying in a curved path through the air. This is more technically known as a torque-induced precession or gyroscopic precession.

Since the torque applied here is going to be reasonably constant through the short flight of the boomerang and the angular momentum likewise stays relatively constant, the boomerang will fly in something of a cone pattern; thus, if thrown correctly and wind or the like doesn’t interfere too much, the boomerang will come right back to you.  For those inexperienced with catching the boomerangs and who start out throwing a relatively heavy one, this is not always a good thing. ;-)

Message For the Day…” Never Get Dejected at any point of Time …”

Never get dejected at any point in time for anything. It is said that there are two losses for the one who is dissatisfied – Asantushto Dvijo Nashtaha. One is they will not have any happiness and second, they will also not be at peace. Why do people feel dissatisfied? People get restless or disheartened, if someone is in a higher position or is wearing better clothes or is more educated than them. Don’t look at someone who is better than you. Compare yourself with someone who is in a lower position than you. Then, you will not develop negative qualities. When you compare yourself with someone better than you, ego and jealousy will certainly enter you. If you see the under privileged and the distressed, and have compassion for them and serve them, you will feel satisfied. Strengthen your empathy and develop noble qualities in this manner.

” It Can Be any one … It Can be YOU too… Spread Few Smiles …”

The young group of teenagers at DexterLab, who usually restrict themselves to the comedy genre, has come up with a very interesting and thought provoking video. A faceless man travels across Mumbai, with the intent of spreading a few smiles.

The best part of the video is where the ‘giving hand’ picks up things from religious places & offers them the the needy instead. The concept strikes a chord because the ‘giving hand’ is faceless: it can be anyone, it can be me, it can be you.

Message For the Day…” Spend Your Hard earned Money in Righteous Ways…”

It is not sufficient if you study well, receive degrees, get good jobs and earn high salaries. Today people worship wealth. They earn a lot of money and as they amass it, they waste it by spending it on constructing tall buildings, buying cars and for other such selfish purposes. Wealth acquired through unfair means is also being spent off in similar unfair activities. Money comes today and goes tomorrow, moves from person to person. Your ancestors also earned a lot of money. But they used it for judicious, righteous and noble pursuits. They built shelters for passersby, dug wells to provide water and established educational institutions and health centers. You must spend hard earned money in righteous ways. Else, that money will cause a lot of tribulations in your family

His voice turns to a whisper. “Would you … study?”

A Plane in Space for 500 Days… How and Why ?… No Answer !!!

Featured Image for A plane has been in space for 500 days, and no one knows why

The X-37B is a kind of robotic space plane, built by the US. It’s been in Earth’s orbit for more than 500 days. And its real purpose is a complete mystery. Intrigued?

Here’s what we do know about X-37B

Constructed in California, the Boeing-built X-37B Orbital Space Vehicle was built for the US Air Force as a test vehicle; not intended to reach production. It is a quarter the size of the Endeavour Space Shuttle. It is equipped with heat-shield protection for re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere.

Currently the X-37B is orbiting at 28,044km/h, at a distance of around 350km in the sky. It can land, but no one will say when that will be.

It’s been in the sky before, after being launched on April 22, 2010, on a rocket. It then landed on December 3, 2010 – blowing a tire and suffering minor damage to its underbelly.

It took off again from Cape Canaveral on December 11, 2012 – now reaching 500 days in orbit.

The Air Force also launched a second model of X-37B on March 5, 2011. Described by the U.S. military as an “effort to test new space technologies”, it landed safely at Vandenberg Air Force Base on June 16, 2012, after 469 days in space. This third mission has now smashed this previous record.

X-37B’s actual functions are still heavily classified.

As you’d imagine, conspiracy theorists are having a field day, and here’s why:

Powered by a solar panel that unfurls once in orbit, X-37B can open with small, shuttle-like payload bay in its middle – think of a clamshell opening from underneath. There’s room for more than just a solar panel too. Exactly what items it carries, and why they need to be in space so long, has proved elusive for analysts, the space community, and the media.

To add further intrigue, the plane is classified as a secret project, yet maker Boeing has released pictures and more than two pages of details on the X-37B. That’s not how secrets are usually dealt with. By contrast, the secretLockheed SR-71 Blackbird was not declassified until decades after it had been flown in the Vietnam War.

The X-37 started life way back in 1999 when NASA asked Boeing’s Phantom Works division to develop an orbital test vehicle. This was a civilian project, and the X-37 was originally spec’d as an unmanned, robotic spacecraft that would rendezvous with satellites to refuel, repair them, or crash them back to Earth once their lifecycle was complete. But, in 2004, the project was transferred to DARPA and since then, it has been highly classified.

The amateur skywatching community that documents satellites say it’s orbiting between 43.5 degrees north latitude to 43.5 degrees south latitude. That’s a band around the middle of Earth that takes in much of the US, Middle East, and Asia, but is away from Russia, and Europe. Spotters suggest that at the altitude of 350km, it is ideal altitude for spying, but too low to refuel or fix other satellites.

It’s versatile, and has worked well enough that Boeing is contracted to create the next model, the X-37C. It will be at least 65% larger and have the ability to carry up to six astronauts, while operating unmanned.

The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle

What we can guess

The two most popular theories suggest the vehicle is simply running an extended duration test – a marathon in space. The other theory is that the two previous missions prove the testing phase is complete, and it is now on an extended operation running a mission, or multiple missions.

The long endurance run theory has credit; proving that new, experimental critical components can work reliably for a long-duration in space, close to Earth.

The running-mission has credit too – with two previous missions complete, X-37B can now operate at length. And perhaps it is – observing, spying, experimenting, hosting space-weapons, or collecting data for the NSA. We just don’t know.

Both theories are plausible.

What it isn’t

Plenty of conspiracy theorist have posed the question of X-37B carrying a nuclear payload, to guarantee a ‘first strike’ opportunity (or to have a counter-option in place).

If you have any hope for humanity, that can’t be right. The US is a signatory to The Space Treaty, which is no joke. Space-based weapons of mass destruction are banned.

(One curious example of a space-based weapon that isn’t banned is a Kinetic strike, where objects whizzing around the Earth at great speed are intentionally sent to the ground, causing a meteorite-like impact and widespread damage. This type of attack is also known as ‘Rods from God’.)
