Casa Terracota: The Clay House…..

This misshapen adobe colored house, located in Villa de Leyva, a colonial mountain village 95 miles north of Bogota, Colombia, was built by Columbian architect Octavio Mendoza. It was built entirely out of clay and baked in the sun. No steel or cement or other reinforcing materials were used. The 5,400-square-foot house is claimed by Mendoza to be “the biggest piece of pottery in the world.”

The house features two floors with lounging and sleeping areas equipped with beds, tables and chairs also made from locally sourced clay and fired in a kiln. There is a fully functional kitchen with dishes, jugs and vases all fashioned from the same material. Solar panels provide hot water for showers, and bathroom toilets and sinks are decorated with colorful mosaic tiles.

Mendoza, who spent most of his career designing homes, commercial buildings and churches, calls the clay house his ‘project for life’. It took him 14 years to build it. Mendoza’s goal, he says, is to demonstrate how soil can be transformed into habitable architecture by simply using the natural resources at hand.

Can Drinking Water Be Produced from Thin Air? Yes, and It Is Happening Right Here in India…

In a country where women often have to walk miles to find and collect drinking water for their families, the WaterMaker project to produce water from thin air is no less than magical. It is, in the words of one grateful recipient, “khuda ka paani.”

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words: “producing water from air”? When Meher Bhandara, the founder and director of WaterMaker India, heard them, she was intrigued. “Water from air? How is that possible?” she wondered.

Today, Meher and her small team of eight people, are making it possible for many places in rural India to enjoy clean and pure drinking water produced right out of air.

“When we first heard of this technology in 2004 from a scientist in the US, we laughed. But after he told us more about it, the first thought that struck us was that India needed clean drinking water desperately. We checked out the machines that use this technology and were really amazed. As social entrepreneurs, we decided to make these unique Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) in India, so we could provide clean and healthy drinking water to people who needed it the most…Today we are proud to say that we have the largest range of AWGs — producing from 120 litres to 5000 litres per day. We also export these WaterMakers (AWGs) to many other countries,” says Meher.

Meher and her team took part in an exhibition in Delhi, where they showcased one AWG machine just to see how people would react to it. “The people were completely amazed. They could actually see drops of water forming from thin air. People were literally walking around the machine and looking under it to see if there were any hidden pipes.”

It was then, in 2004, that they decided to manufacture the machines in India itself so as to have control over the quality and delivery of the machines.

An Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG)

WaterMaker India is the sole and exclusive licensee for US-based Atmospheric Water Technology Inc./Air Water Corporation. WaterMaker thus has the authority to market, sell, manufacture and distribute air to water machines in India and several parts of the world, including Africa, the Middle East, Far East and South Asia.

How does it work?

So how does air lead to the production of water? The machines work basically on the simple refrigeration technique of condensing the humidity in the atmosphere and collecting the resultant water. After the condensation process, the water is passed through various filters to purify it, resulting in clean drinking water.

“Our technology is most effective in areas where the temperature is between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity conditions over 65-75% or more. Producing water directly from air, WaterMakers need no water source. Using electricity or any alternate energy source, we use techniques optimized to condense water from air. Water quality complies with WHO/BIS standards and the water contains no harmful chemicals, bacteria, pesticides, or minerals,” explains Meher.

WaterMaker India is a for-profit company, which aims to give back to society through its CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiative. With the help of this amazing technology, the company has made Jalimudi in Andhra Pradesh the first village to have drinking water supplied from air. Like many other parts of rural India, this village too was facing several issues like lack of pure drinking water, ground water being contaminated, and villagers walking long distances to collect water.

“Our very first project was our own CSR project at Jalimudi village in Andhra Pradesh, where we set up an Air Water Station in 2009 to provide safe drinking water to over 600 villagers. We have just installed another Air Water Station at Gandhigram in Gujarat for the local water authorities. The first one was already installed for the villagers in April, 2015, and consisted of two 1000 litre WaterMakers, which generate 2000 litres of fresh drinking water per day, and three storage tanks. An insurance company has also set up WaterMaker drinking water stations at night libraries for students in Mumbai and more projects are in the planning stages.”

We are not a completely green technology yet because we need power to run the machines. We hope to change this in the future with solar, wind, and alternate power sources. Can you imagine if we have alternate power giving alternate water, what a great thing that would be? That is my ambition right now,” says an excited Meher. She also plans on expanding the reach of WaterMaker by working with more government initiatives and NGOs, so as to impact as many people as possible.

“When we set up our very first Air Water Station at Jalimudi village in 2009, the villagers were thrilled to see water being produced from air, drop by drop. I was extremely touched when a very old lady came up to me and blessed me, saying ‘you have given us Khuda ka pani!’ She had tears in her eyes and so did I. The women and young girls who had to walk almost 3 kms every day to collect water couldn’t thank me enough for this ‘magical water,’ which would save them precious time for more productive activities. I will never forget the look in their eyes and am determined to set up many more WaterMakers wherever I can. Though we are a for profit organization, I also firmly believe in giving back – drop by drop!” concludes Meher.

When Sarah Sanders bought her house, she was drawn to a particularly gorgeous tree on the property. Over the years, however, it began to rot. The city soon came calling, since the dead tree posed a safety hazard for Sanders and nearby residents.

Although she was devastated, Sanders enlisted the help of a local artist to remove the tree and turn it into something beautiful that the whole neighborhood could enjoy.

Although the tree no longer exists in its original form, people in the community will get to cherish it for years to come.

The ” World Map” on the banks of Lake Klejtrup , Denmark …

The World Map on the banks of the Lake Klejtrup in Denmark is a 4,000-square-meter walkable map of the world built out of soil, stones and grass. It’s the work of only one man — Søren Poulsen, who spent the last 25 years of his life building it.

Søren Poulsen, the creator of “The World Map”, was born in Denmark in 1888. Having spent part of his life in America, he returned to the village where he was born by the lake in Klejtrup. In 1943, Søren Poulsen was working on the drainage of the surrounding meadows when he found a stone shaped like Jutland, inspiring him to create a small world of his own. The following year, with the help of primitive tools and a wheelbarrow, Poulsen started laying big stones on the ice on the lake, and slowly the World Map took shape.

Søren Poulsen continued building his map until his death in 1969. The final map measures 45 meters by 90 meters, and was built entirely to scale —one 111-kilometer degrees of latitude corresponds to 27 centimeters on the map. Today, the Verdenskortet ved Klejtrup Sø (Danish for “World Map at Lake Klejtrup”) is a popular attraction in the Viborg area.

சாய்பாபா அவதரித்தது 1926 கார்த்திகை மாதம் சோமவாரத்தில் ஆகும். தற்போது, 90வது அவதார நாளும் அதே போல கார்த்திகை சோமவாரத்தில் வருவது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இவ்வகையில், இது மிக சிறப்பான அவதார நாளாக அமைகிறது.

தர்மத்தை நிலைநாட்ட :

யுகந்தோறும் அவதரிக்கிறேன் என்பது கிருஷ்ணரின் வாக்கு. அப்படிப்பட்ட அவதார புருஷராக பகவான் சத்ய சாய்பாபா விளங்குகிறார். 1926, நவ. 23ல் பிறந்த அவருக்கு, நாளை 90வது அவதாரநாள் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

புட்டபர்த்தி என்றால், “சாய்பாபா’ என்ற திருநாமம் தான் நினைவில் வரும். இவ்வூர் அந்தக் காலத்தில் கொல்லப்பள்ளி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. பசுக்கூட்டம் நிறைந்த ஊர் என்பது இதன் பொருள். அங்கு ராஜு வம்சத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு குடும்பம் இருந்து வந்தது. அந்த வம்சத்தில் மகான் ரத்னாகரம் வெங்க அவதூதர் என்பவர் இருந்தார். அவரது வழியில் வந்தவர் கொண்டமராஜு. மக்களுக்கு ராமபிரானின் பெருமைகளை எடுத்துச் சொல்வதில் அலாதி பிரியம் கொண்டவர். அவருக்கு இரு மகன்கள் இருந்தனர். இருவருக்கும் தன் முன்னோரான வெங்கஅவதூதர் நினைவாக அவருடைய பெயரையே இட்டார். மூத்தவர் பெத்த வெங்கம ராஜு. இளையவர் சின்ன வெங்கம ராஜு. இருவரும் தந்தையைப் போலவே பக்தியில் ஈடுபாடு கொண்டவர்கள்.

இவர்களுக்கு கர்நூல் மாவட்டம் “கோலி மிகண்ட்லா’ கிராமத்தில் சுப்பராஜு என்ற உறவினர் இருந்தார். சிவபக்தி மிக்கவர். அவருக்கு ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை இருந்தது. அந்த சமயத்தில் கிராமத்தில் கொள்ளையர்களின் அட்டகாசம் இருந்தது.

சுப்பராஜுவின் நிலையறிந்த உறவினர் கொண்டமராஜு,””நீங்கள் ஏன் கோலிமிகண்ட்லாவில் இருந்து கொண்டு சிரமப்பட வேண்டும்? சித்ராவதி ஆற்றோரம் இருக்கும் கர்நாடக நாகப்பள்ளியில் புதுவீடு கட்டி குடியேறிவிடுங்கள். வேண்டிய உதவிகளைச் செய்கிறேன். மேலும் உங்கள் மகளான ஈஸ்வரம்மா தான் என் வீட்டு மருமகள்!” என்று வாக்களித்தார். இதன்படி பெத்த வெங்கமராஜுவுக்கு ஈஸ்வரம்மாவை திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தார்.இவர்களுக்கு சேஷமராஜு, வெங்கம்மா, பர்வதம்மா என்னும் குழந்தைகள் பிறந்தனர். பின் தொடர்ந்து நான்கு குறை மாதப் பிரசவங்கள் நிகழ்ந்தன. தன் மருமகள் தீர்க்காயுள் உள்ள நல்ல குழந்தையைப் பெற்றெடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று குடும்பத்தினர் பிரார்த்தித்தனர்.

விரைவிலேயே அவர்களுடைய எண்ணம் நிறைவேறியது. ஒருமுறை, ஈஸ்வரம்மா கிணற்றில் நீர் எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த போது, நீலநிற ஒளி பந்து போல திரண்டு வந்து அவரது உடலில் புகுந்தது. தெய்வீக நிகழ்ச்சி இது என்பதை உணர்ந்த ஈஸ்வரம்மா, தன் மாமியாரிடம் மட்டும் இதனை சொன்னார். இதையடுத்து ஈஸ்வரம்மா கர்ப்பவதியானார். கிருஷ்ணர் தேவகிக்கு எட்டாவது குழந்தையாக அவதரித்தது போலவே, சத்யசாய்பாபாவும் ஈஸ்வரம்மாவின் எட்டாவது குழந்தையாக அவதரித்தார். 1926 நவம்பர் 23ல், அட்சயவருஷம் கார்த்திகை மாதம் திருவாதிரை நாளில் சோமவாரமான திங்கட்கிழமை அவரது அவதார நாளாகும்.அவர் செய்த அற்புதங்களும், சமூகத்தொண்டும் கொஞ்ச நஞ்சமல்ல. அவரை இந்த இனிய நாளில் வணங்கி மகிழ்வோம்.

பயணத்தை நிறுத்திய பாபா:

பாபா பக்தரான சோமயாஜுலு ஐதராபாத்திலிருந்து சென்னை செல்ல ஆயத்தமானார். காரில் விமானநிலையம் சென்று கொண்டிருந்த அவருக்கு, “அன்று மகாசிவராத்திரி’ என்று நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. விமான டிக்கெட் ஏற்கனவே பதிவு செய்திருந்தாலும், போவதற்குச் சிறிதும் இஷ்டமில்லை. பயணத்தை ரத்து செய்துவிட்டு, சிவபூஜை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற ஆவலில் வீட்டிற்குத் திரும்பினார். பயபக்தியுடன் பூஜை அறைக்குள் நுழைந்தார். பிரதானமாக பூஜிக்கும் சிவலிங்கத்திற்கு வில்வார்ச்சனை செய்யத் தொடங்கினார். “ஓம் நமச்சிவாய!’ என்ற ஐந்தெழுத்து மந்திரத்தை அவர் இடைவிடாமல் ஜெபித்தபடியே வில்வத்தால் இறைவனை அர்ச்சித்தார். அன்று இரவு செய்தி கேட்ட சோமயாஜுலுவிற்கு தூக்கி வாரிப்போட்டது. ஐதராபாத்தில் இருந்து கிளம்பிய விமானம் சென்னை போய் சேரவில்லை. வானிலை சரியில்லாததால் விமானம் விபத்தில் சிக்கி விட்டது. பயணிகள் அனைவரும் மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டனர். ஆனால்,பாபா பக்தரான சோமயாஜுலு, தான் மட்டும் காப்பாற்றப்பட்டதை எண்ணி அதிசயித்தார். நம்பியவரைக் காப்பாற்றி கரைசேர்க்கும் சாய்பாபாவின் அருளை வீட்டாருடன் நன்றியுணர்வோடு பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

சத்யசாய் சூப்பர் ஸ்பெஷாலிட்டி மருத்துவமனை:

எத்தனையோ மருத்துவமனைகள் இருந்தாலும், சாய்பாபாவால் புட்டபர்த்தி மற்றும் பெங்களூரு ஒயிட்பீல்டில் நிறுவப்பட்ட சூப்பர் ஸ்பெஷாலிட்டி மருத்துவமனைகள் மிகவும் வித்தியாசமானவை. அதி நவீன வசதி படைத்த இந்த மருத்துவமனைகளில் சிகிச்சை பெற எந்தவித கட்டணமும் வசூலிக்கப்படவில்லை. மருந்து, உணவு உள்ளிட்ட எல்லாமே இலவசம். “தரமான சிகிச்சை, இலவச சிகிச்சை’ என்பதுவே இந்த மருத்துவமனைகளின் தாரக மந்திரம். இதய அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்கு இந்த மருத்துவமனைகள் ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டாக விளங்குகின்றன. 1964ம் ஆண்டு சிறிய பொது மருத்துவமனையாக ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு, பின்னர் அனைவருக்கும் சேவை புரியும் வகையில் சூப்பர் ஸ்பெஷாலிட்டி மருத்துவமனைகளாக தரம் உயர்ந்தன. 1991 மற்றும் 2001ம் ஆண்டுகளில் பாபா இந்த மருத்துவமனைகளைத் திறந்து வைத்தார். இரண்டு மருத்துவமனைகளும் ஓரு ஆண்டு காலத்திற்குள்ளாகவே கட்டப்பட்டது என்பது மிகப் பெரிய அதிசயம் என்று பக்தர்கள் கூறுகின்றனர். அர்ப்பணிப்பு உணர்வு கொண்ட டாக்டர்கள், நர்சுகள் மற்றும் பணியாளர்கள் இங்கு உள்ளனர். ஆண், பெண் தொண்டர்களும் எந்த நேரமும் சேவை புரிகின்றனர். எல்லா கவுன்டர்களும் இங்கு இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால், “கேஷ் கவுன்டர்’ மட்டும் இங்கு கிடையாது. நோயாளிகளுக்கு முன்பதிவு செய்த பின், வரிசைக்கிரமப்படி அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்யப்படுகிறது. இங்கிருக்கும் பிரார்த்தனைக் கூடங்கள் “இது மருத்துவமனையா அல்லது கோவிலா?’ என்று பிரமிக்க வைக்கும் அளவுக்கு பிரம்மாண்டமாய் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஜாதி, மத பேதமின்றி அனைவருக்கும் இங்கு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்படுகிறது.நோயாளிகளுக்கு வேண்டிய ஆலோசனைகள் எடுத்துச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. இந்த மருத்துவமனைகள் சமுதாயத்திற்கு ஒரு வரப்பிரசாதம் என்று சாய் பக்தர்கள் கூறுகின்றனர்.

Image of the Day…Northwest Australia From the Space Station’s EarthKAM…

This stunning image of the northwest corner of Australia was snapped by a student on Earth after remotely controlling the Sally Ride EarthKAM aboard the International Space Station. The EarthKAM program allows students to request photographs of specific Earth features, which are taken by a special camera mounted on the space station when it passes over those features. The images are posted online for the public and students in participating classrooms around the world to view.

EarthKAM is the only program providing students with such direct control of an instrument on a spacecraft orbiting Earth, teaching them about environmental science, geography and space communications.The project was initiated by Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, in 1995 and called KidSat; the camera flew on five space shuttle flights before moving to the space station on Expedition 1 in 2001. In 2011, NASA and Sally Ride Science installed a new camera system in a downward-pointing window on the station. This camera system is responsible for taking and downloading student image requests.

Flower Tower of Paris…

In Paris’s 17th arrondissement is a 10-story apartment building that’s so completely covered with potted plants that the building itself is invisible. Each flower pot is dense with foliage from rapidly growing bamboo plants. With 380 such irregularly spaced flower pots lining the balconies on three sides of the building, the entire apartment block appears to be a giant display of potted plants.

The building called “Flower Tower” was designed by Edouard François, who drew inspiration from Parisians who habitually cultivate even the most tiniest balcony, nurturing surprising greenery in this tightly packed, densely occupied city.

The pots are fixed to the balconies and fed by an automatic watering system to ensure that the plants do not die during the long holidays and in the height of summer. Bamboo was chosen because it is a hardy and fast growing plant, but also because it makes a noise in the wind, “giving the impression to those inside that they are sleeping in a tree” explained Edouard François.

Image of the Day… Cloud Shadow

The sun is behind the cloud. It looks as if the shadow is also behind the cloud, but that’s just a trick of perspective.

Asthadi Setyawan in Malang, East Java, Indonesia posted this photo at EarthSky Photo on G+. What you see here is the shadow of a cloud. The great sky optics expert Les Cowley – of the website Atmospheric Optics – calls them the inverse of crepuscular rays and notes they can produce dramatic effects.

We asked Les why it appears that this shadow is on the wrong side of the cloud. It looks from the photo as if the sun and the shadow are both behind the cloud. He told EarthSky:

It only looks that way. The shadow is closer to the camera than the cloud. Rays from the sun 93 million miles [150 million km] away are (nearly) parallel and always downward pointing. The shadows can be through misty or hazy air, or, sometimes, they’re cast on a lower thin layer of cloud that is otherwise invisible.
