It is through the private commerce of the auction house that many a precious relic of India’s history has come to light.

On May 22, a remarkable artifact that illuminates a watershed moment in India’s history will be auctioned by the leading London auction house Christie’s — and presumably thereafter vanish forever from the public eye.
A heavy gold ring worn by 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan during his last campaign against the British in 1799 will be sold as part of the ‘Raglan Collection: Wellington, Waterloo & The Crimea.’
Unusually, the 41.2 gm oval ring has the name of the Hindu God Rama in raised Devanagari inscribed on it.
It was taken off the finger of the dead ruler by the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, as his personal spoil of war after the Battle of Seringapatam in 1799.
The ring then found its way into the hands of another military family, that of FitzRoy Somerset, the 1st Baron Raglan. A famous soldier of the early 19th century, he joined Duke Wellington’s service in 1808 and rose to become his right-hand man for the next 40 years. He fought in major campaigns under Duke Wellington, including Waterloo and in the Crimea.
FitzRoy Somerset married the Duke’s favourite niece Emily Wellesley-Pole who was in possession of the ring, a gift from her uncle.
The ring has been valued at £10,000 to £15,000 and is part of the private collection of Fitzroy John Somerset, the great great grandson of the 1st Baron Raglan. The collection contains items that have been the possession of the family from 1858, including historical medals, arms and armour, militaria, pictures, furniture, silver, books, Indian weapons and works of art, as well as a selection of art.
Though a small object of personal use, the ring with its inscription awakens the spirit of the unusual 18th ruler who was its owner.
The historical record shows Tipu as Catholic in his religious outlook and forward-looking in his world-view. He sought out what was modern and transformatory for the time, putting it to use in his paramount objective of defeating the British.

“The only love that I really believe in is a mother’s love for her children.” ~Karl Lagerfeld
This beautiful video of a man’s journey back home is shot entirely on Google Glass. The film is unique because it gives us a first person perspective of the whole journey, as if we are going home to our own mother.
The ending, where the son reveals the news of his wife’s pregnancy by showing the ultrasound, is so beautiful that it might just wet your eyes.
Thank you, Mom.

Fact:
This message went viral in India on the occasion of Diwali. The message came with a picture showing the satellite image of the Indian map during the day, followed by the same during the night, appearing bright and colorful throughout. However, the message was a hoax. The image in question is put up by National Geophysical Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA and is actually a composite satellite view of India at night, showing the change in night illumination during the period 1992-2003. Satellite data from the year 1992 is shown in blue color, 1998 green colored, and that in 2003 is colored red. This stunning composite satellite image of India at night was developed by NASA so as to illustrate the increasing population of India over the years.

Fact:
This picture showing a live three headed snake on an Indian road started circulating on many social networking websites. The message that comes with the picture states that it is a beautiful creation of nature. The story however, is a hoax. The three headed snake picture is not real, it is a photoshopped one.

Fact:
This story was very widely circulating through emails, blogs and social networking sites. The message claiming that the Indian national anthem “Jana gana mana..” was selected as the best in the world by UNESCO was never heard of or confirmed by any kind of news or media reports. If the story was factual, it would have definitely received wide attention from the media. If the UNESCO released such a statement, it would be readily available on their official website, which is no where to be seen. India Today wrote to UNESCO to get clarity on these stories and got a confirmation message from UNESCO that these messages were indeed a hoax.

Fact:
The photograph which shows 11 new born babies along with hospital staff was accompanied by a message claiming that an Indian woman gave birth to all of them in a single delivery, and considers it as God’s miracle. 6 out of the 11 babies were reported to be twins. The photograph is genuine, but the story is a hoax. The photograph actually shows 11 kids born to different mothers on 11.11.11 at the 21st Century Hospital & Test Tube Baby Center in Surat, India. The doctors and hospital staff together with the new born babies took photographs and shared it as an interesting achievement on 11.11.11.

Fact:
Many versions of this story were circulating through emails along with these pictures of giant human skeletons. The news related to this story appeared in the media in countries like India, Bangladesh etc. However, all these versions were false. The pictures depicting giant human skeletons are actually a part of image manipulation contest conducted by worth1000.com.

Fact:
This picture claims to show the Hindu God Hanuman’s Gadha (mace), supposedly discovered during an excavation in Sri Lanka. Other versions said it is the world’s largest Gada of Veer Hanuman discovered in Gujarat. The claims are not true. It actually shows a 45 feet Gada replica for installation on a 125-foot-high Hanuman statue on the outskirts of Indore, India on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti (birthday) on 25 April 2013. (As quoted in Hindustan Times epaper.)

Fact:
This hoax was a rather unfortunate and disrespectful mis-interpretation of Bhagat Singh’s biography. Bhagat Singh was arrested following the 1929 Assembly bomb throwing incident. Fearing civil agitation, the then Viceroy of India Lord Irwin set up a special tribunal called the Privy Council to speed up his trail process. An Indian defence committee in Punjab appealed against the Privy Council, which was again dismissed by the Judge Viscount Dunedin. After the rejection, the then Congress party president Madan Mohan Malviya filed a mercy appeal before Lord Irwin on 14 February 1931, but even that did not work, and Bhagat Singh was hung on 23 March 1931 at 7:30 pm in Lahore jail along with fellow freedom fighters Rajguru and Sukhdev.
Fact:
This story broke on Facebook walls and Whatsapp chats all over India. A supposed warning from the Delhi Police warned consumers that a worker from the “Frooti Company” was HIV positive and had added his blood to the drink mix. It also claimed that the story had been reported by NDTV. As you can guess, the whole thing was a hoax. Both the Delhi Police and NDTV denied the ridiculous story. Besides one can’t even get AIDS through “infected” food.
Fact:
The messages showed pictures of a tree with mysterious wooden carvings of various animals like crocodiles, monkeys, snakes, spiders and others; claiming that it is a ‘Baobab’ tree that has the largest trunk in the world. The message stated that this mysterious tree was found near a hermitage in the dense forests of Nalgonda, Andhra Pradesh, India. The truth? There was no mysterious tree or hermitage. This was in fact an art work in Disney Land.

A light plane that ran into trouble over Australia’s Blue Mountains has made a near-perfect landing – on the end of a parachute.
The pilot of the Cirrus aircraft deployed the parachute that is fitted to that make of plane and drifted down into the front garden of a house.
If the aircraft had not been carrying a parachute, police and flying experts agreed that the result could have been tragic.
Carried to safety: All four people on board landed safely in the front yard of a house in Larson, New South Wales
The pilot and his two passengers received only minor injuries after the unusual landing – witnessed by open-mouthed residents of the small town of Lawson.
Resident Robert Ross, who stared in astonishment at the sight of an aircraft coming towards him on the end of a parachute, said he had at first heard the engine splutter.
‘He got it going again and then it went dead,’ he told the Herald Sun newspaper.

No injuries: Amazingly everyone survived the terrifying incident with just one of the passengers requiring hospital attention for neck pain
‘It then started to go into a spiral. I thought the pilot was going to eject, but it all happened too quick.
‘I started yelling out to my wife “There’s a plane going to crash into the house”.’
The aircraft’s sudden descent was halted at around 4,000ft, however, when a huge parachute, with orange stripes, suddenly appeared above it and it drifted down about 400 yards from Mr Ross’s home.

Onlookers: Resident Robert Ross watched the entire drama unfold as he chopped wood in his back garden and said if it wasn’t for the parachute the plane would have crashed into his house
Cirrus light planes have a handle in the cockpit which, when pulled, removes a cover plate and deploys a parachute.
Mr Allan Bligh, president of the Sydney Flying Club, told the paper that there were about 200 registered Cirrus planes in Australia, but a number of manufacturers decline to use the same parachute system believing a forced controlled landing should be carried out.
‘You are taught from your early days of flying that it is a far better system than the deployment of a parachute.’

Carried to safety: Since January this year Cirrus claims 85 lives have been saved by pilots activating the system
But Cirrus claims that 85 lives have been saved when pilots or passengers have activated the parachute system.
It is understood the Cirrus SR22, which came down in the Blue Mountains, was a demonstration model, which prompted Sydney radio host Stewart Bocking to comment today: ‘They were caught in a bit of a dilemma.
‘If the plane was being demonstrated, you wouldn’t want it known that it developed engine trouble – but you would also want it to be known that you can land safely on the end of a parachute.’
A staff member at Regal Air, which sells and carries out maintenance work on the aircraft from its headquarters at Sydney’s Bankstown Airport, said that if the passengers ‘had been in any other aircraft they wouldn’t be going home tonight to their families.’
This little hummingbird got injured by an attack and was rescued by this young man, who also took care of her and nursed her back to health for months, even catching insects for it to eat every day.
He tells: “When she thought she was ready to leave (and she was) she flew off to her favorite patch of the back yard, and her instincts instantly kicked in, and now she’s just like all the other hummingbirds. for those that are concerned that she has imprinted on humans and wouldn’t survive in the wild, don’t worry, she is thriving. she has even successfully migrated and returned back to my yard.“
We must applaud his patience and kindness, and get inspired ourselves, to save and help any creature we can.

Launched on May 7, 2013, the European Space Agency’s minisatellite Proba-V monitors Earth’s plants, covering the entire planet every two days.
At the end of the month, after a year in orbit, this little bundle of sensors will be taking over the job of a series of satellites that have been tracking the health of the planet’s vegetation for 16 years.
The ESA’s Spot-4 satellite stopped working in 2013, and Spot-5 is on its last legs.
Not only is Proba-V the size of a washing machine, it looks a little like one too. The minisatellite has a huge, 1,400-mile-wide field of view — enough to cover most continents in a single shot. In order to get the best information about Earth’s flora, the satellite’s Vegetation instrument detects light in the blue, red, near-infrared and mid-infrared wavebands. The instrument has a 1,150-foot resolution.
Accounting for cloud cover, the satellite collects enough data for a nearly cloud-free global map every 10 days.
In addition to keeping track of vegetation growth, the little satellite’s data makes beautiful images. Here are some of its best views of Earth from its first year in orbit.
