Meet Pratibha Krishnaiah Who works in a Village now After Leaving a Lucrative Career

India is witnessing a radical transformation where highly qualified youngsters are giving up cushy jobs to make a difference in the lives of poor people in rural areas.

Manu A B/Rediff.com tracks the success stories of some of the remarkable people who are working in remote villages to change the profile of rural India.

Pratibha Krishnaiah quit a lucrative career to help rural women in Uttarakhand.

It has been a paradigm shift for Pratibha Krishnaiah, who till last year was cozily placed, working as a software engineer in a multinational firm in Bangalore.

But these days she takes a grinding two-hour trek to reach her work place that is nestled in the Uttarakhand valley and has been trying to bring about a positive change amongst the rural women folk spread across three villages.

Pratibha Krishnaiah has been guiding women from Khetikhan, Tapni Pal and Dhat villages on how to be productive and earn money, without having to leave their families to distant towns to eke out a living.

Pratibha trains women on knitting new products

Pratibha says life in the mountains has taught her a lot and made her own life more worthwhile. Earlier even waking up early was so difficult. Now she easily gets up by 4.30 everyday and starts the day with yoga and jogging. Walking uphill to interact with the women in the villages is not difficult anymore.  “Personally, I have never felt so much happiness in my life. Living here been a great experience,” she says.

“It is really good to live with minimal income. I don’t have to worry about tax cuts neither do I have to think about good investment proposals. Money is not the most important thing in life. Though my job profile was good, I felt burnt out. I wanted to be close to nature and work dedicatedly in the villages and the SBI’s fellowship looked liked a magical opportunity. My parents thought it was a ridiculous idea to give up a good job but I convinced them to pursue my dream,” says Pratibha who is at peace now.

People in the village depend mostly on agriculture and it is a big gamble because weather plays a crucial role here. After months of hard work, when the crop is ready to be harvested, untimely rains just damage the yield which leads to huge losses. So it was important to find an alternate and steady income.

Cut off from the mainstream, the innocent villagers have little idea about the value of their products or their own capabilities. Empowering women, honing their inherent skills and finding a market for their unique products is now Pratibha’s mission.

After working for 7 years in Thomson Reuters, Pratibha realised that she needed to do something more meaningful in life. She was looking out for options to work in the rural sector when she came to know about the SBI Youth for India fellowship, which offers a 13-month stint to bring about positive changes in villages.

People in the village too thought she was crazy to give up a good city life to work in the harsh terrain that too in bad weather conditions, at a time when most youngsters in their villages were migrating to cities for better prospects.

Pratibha was captivated by the beauty and serenity of the place. But the initial days were grueling for a city-bred person like her.

“The first week was really tough. I was not used to such cold weather. I even thought I may not be able to survive there. But slowly I got acclimatised and settled well. The spirit of people is amazing and despite such tough conditions they go out to work and stay happy with meagre incomes. I realized that if you get satisfaction and peace from your work, that’s the best reward,” says Pratibha.

Once during heavy rains, the village did not have electricity for a week. Phone networks were down and they were literally cut off from the outside world. “For me it was a first experience but for the people here, it’s a way of life. They have no complaints,” says Pratibha.

 

Considering the harsh conditions, it was necessary to find an alternate source of income.Pratibha found that the women were good at knitting. These women are so good at multitasking that they will be knitting even while walking to the market carrying a big load on their head, she observed.

So she mobilised a group of 25 women to develop their skills in knitting and taught them crochet work. She provided them with elegant designs and helped them make small woollen products which have a good demand in cities.

She also trained them to make things like mufflers, shawls, small shoes, socks, hair clips and hair bands which can be made in lesser time. Pratibha then held an exhibition of these products at Bangalore and it was well received.

 

There is a good market for such products…If there is regular supply it would generate additional income for these women, says, Prathiba.

Though they are good at knitting and crochet work, they can’t give up working as labourers because it does not give them a steady income. So unfortunately these women are either toiling in the fields or working as labourers.

Partibha believes that there is so much scope for entrepreneurship here. It is a hard struggle for women who work as labourers for just Rs 20-30 a day. Most of them drop out from school or study till tenth as the government offers them Rs 50,000 for their marriage expenses if they study till tenth grade.

Pratibha plans to establish a market for their products in cities so that they have a steady income. She also has plans to set up a small scale industry, which can be run by these enterprising women.

Women on an average spent about 20 hours across a period of 1-2 weeks to knit a sweater which they sell for just Rs 250. I have now trained them to make clips which takes just 15 minutes to make and can be easily sold for Rs 15 a pair. A muffler which takes lesser time to stitch can be sold for Rs 300, so it saves them a lot of work and time,” says Pratibha.

NGOs like BAIF are a great support to the people here. Many of them have taken initiatives of creating self help groups for doing knitting work but it can be expanded on a large scale if all the women work together. They can make a better income with a collective effort, believes Prathibha.

The villagers are very simple people, not at all ambitious and most of them are ignorant about their own potential. They need a constant backing and support to get them out of the drudgery to better lives,” says Pratibha who wishes to continue supporting them even after the fellowship is over after 6 months.

Agriculture being a labour intensive job, people spend so much of time in the fields yet it ends up giving negligible returns at times. The village needs to have co-operative societies and government assistance to regulate buying and selling of agricultural produce. Most of the farmers go to the nearby town to sell their products at throwaway prices and later small shops from this village buy it from those traders, who sell it at much higher prices. So ironically people in the village end up paying more for their own produce.

“I live with an old couple here – Madhavanand and Bhagyalakhsmi. Both of them are above 70 years. I have seen the kind of hardships they go through to get the farming done. This year their entire barley cultivation has yielded nothing as rains wreaked havoc. I really wish to bring an end to such suffering. If they have an alternate means of liveliehood or have better marketing for their agricultural products, these hard working people can lead better lives,” explains Pratibha.

Most families make just Rs 2,000-3000 a month. Some months they just don’t earn anything.

Organic farming is also good practice here. Unfortunately, even farmers like Mahesh Chander who has been a crusader of organic farming is yet to get a certification for his farm. He has even made organic pesticides with medicinal plants. There is no support from the government to support such dedicated people,” says Prathibha who wants to focus on organic farming as well in future.

Pratibha also plans to starts an organic farm, go back to natural ways of farming and set up model farms. She believes that these are just small steps. But if more people come forward to help in rural development, we can really help people and build a sustainable economy.

$100,000 Cheque Awaits Mystery Recycler of Rare Apple 1 Computer

A $100,000 check is waiting for a mystery woman who donated a rare Apple 1 computer.

A $100,000 cheque is waiting for a mystery woman who donated a rare Apple 1 computer to a Silicon Valley recycling firm.

CleanBayArea in Milpitas, California, is trying to track down a woman in her 60s who dropped off some electronic goods in April, when she was cleaning out the garage after her husband died.

In one of the boxes, buried under worthless keyboards, personal computer pieces and wires, was a 1976 Apple 1, a groundbreaking home computer. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak designed and hand-built the computers and sold them for $666.66 each. Only a few dozen are known still to exist.

The recycling firm sold the Apple for $200,000 in a private auction. Its policy is to split the proceeds 50-50 with the person who donated the equipment.

“The body was made out of wood. I’ve never seen anything like that. My first reaction was it was a fake. Then we started looking at it,” said Victor Gichun, vice president of marketing for CleanBayArea.

Gichun declined to say who bought the Apple 1, only that it was a private collector. He’s not sure whether the Apple is still operational.

He said he will recognize the woman, who he believes is local, when he sees her and will write her out a cheque for $100,000.

The boxes sat in the company’s warehouse on a pallet for a couple of weeks because they didn’t expect to find anything valuable, Gichun said.

Legacy Way: Pedestrians Walking Through A Traffic Tunnel in Brisbane …An One Time Opportunity!!!

The opportunity to snap selfies on a stroll through a Brisbane traffic tunnel was one more than 20,000 people were not willing to pass up this weekend.

The one time only offer to walk through the Legacy Way tunnel ahead of its opening to traffic sometime in June was jumped at by pedestrians eager to see how the $1.5 billion project came together.

The 4.6-kilometre tunnel will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove.

It is the largest piece of infrastructure built by a local council anywhere in Australia.

Throughout Sunday, participants were bussed in from special locations around the city for the chance to walk through part or the full length of the westbound lanes of the tunnel.

They were also treated to music, food and drinks, a jumping castle and face painting.

Kelly, Sage and Willa Bentson

Oxley resident Kelly Bentson and her daughters Willa, 6, and Sage, 4, were some of the first to enter the tunnel.

“We think it’s a very exciting thing to do because you’ll only ever be able to do it once,” she said.

“It’s a thing in history for my daughters to remember.

“I think I’ll be using the tunnel – there will be times when we use it. I’m a bit of an infrastructure nerd. I do work in the industry so I like to do these sorts of things.”

Jamboree Heights resident Michael Mann, who has been watching the project closely ever since the first sod was turned, was keen to see the final product.

“I wanted to look at the tunnel and get a bit of exercise. I’ve been keen to check out the design,” he said.

“The tunnel is on my route, I’ll probably be using it.”

Earlier this week it was announced a trip through the tunnel would cost $4.85, but will be discounted for the first year.

பறவைகளில் கழுகுகள் மிக சக்தி வாய்ந்தவை. அவை மிக உயரமாகப் பறக்கக் கூடியவை. அவற்றைவலிமை மற்றும் தைரியம் ஆகியவற்றின் சின்னமாகக் கருதுகின்றோம். ஆனால் அந்தக் கழுகுகளின்பறக்கும் சாகச சக்திகளும், வலிமையும், தைரியமும் பிறப்பிலேயே வருபவை அல்ல. அவைகழுகுகளால் ஒரு கட்டத்தில் கற்றுக் கொள்ளப்படுபவை தான்.

குஞ்சுகளாகக் கூட்டில் சுகமாக, பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்கும் போது கழுகுகள் பலவீனமாகவேஇருக்கின்றன. அவை அப்படியே சுகமாகவும், பாதுகாப்பாகவுமே இருந்து விட்டால் வலிமையாகவும்,சுதந்திரமாகவும் மாறுவது சாத்தியமல்ல. எனவே குஞ்சுகளாக இருக்கும் போது வேண்டியஉணவளித்து, பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்திருக்கும் தாய்ப்பறவை குஞ்சுகள் பறக்க வேண்டிய காலம் வரும்போது மாறி விடுகின்றது.

முதலில் கூடுகளில் மெத்தென இருக்கும் படுக்கையினைக் கலைத்து சிறு குச்சிகளின் கூர்மையானபகுதிகள் வெளிப்படும்படி செய்து கூட்டை சொகுசாகத் தங்க வசதியற்றபடி செய்து விடுகின்றது. பின்தன் சிறகுகளால் குஞ்சினை அடித்து இருக்கும் இடத்தை விட்டுச் செல்லத் தூண்டுகின்றது. தாய்ப்பறவையின் இம்சை தாங்க முடியாத கழுகுக்குஞ்சு கூட்டின் விளிம்புவரை வந்து நிற்கின்றது. அதுவரை பறந்தறியாத குஞ்சு கூட்டின் வெளியே உள்ள உலகத்தின் ஆழத்தையும் உயரத்தையும்விஸ்தீரணத்தையும் பார்த்து மலைத்து நிற்கின்றது.

குஞ்சு காற்றில் சிறகடித்துப் பறக்க முடியாமல் கீழே விழ ஆரம்பிக்கும் நேரத்தில் தாய்க்கழுகுவேகமாக வந்து தன் குஞ்சைப் பிடித்துக் கொள்கிறதுகுஞ்சு மீண்டும் தாயின் பிடியில் பத்திரமாகஇருப்பதாக எண்ணி நிம்மதியடைகிறது. அந்த நிம்மதி சொற்ப நேரம் தான். தன் குஞ்சைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு வானுயரப் பறக்கும் தாய்க்கழுகு மீண்டும் அந்தக் கழுகுக்குஞ்சை அந்தரத்தில் விட்டுவிடுகிறது. மறுபடி காற்று வெளியில் சிறகடித்துப் பறக்க வேண்டிய நிர்ப்பந்தத்திற்கு அந்தக் குஞ்சுஉள்ளாகிறது.

இப்படியே குஞ்சை வெளியே தள்ளி விடுவதும், காப்பாற்றுவதுமாகப் பல முறை நடக்கும் இந்தப்பயிற்சியில் கழுகுக் குஞ்சின் சிறகுகள் பலம் பெறுகின்றன. காற்று வெளியில் பறக்கும் கலையையும்விரைவில் கழுகுக்குஞ்சு கற்றுக் கொள்கிறது. அது சுதந்திரமாக, ஆனந்தமாக, தைரியமாகவானோக்கிப் பறக்க ஆரம்பிக்கிறது.

கழுகுக் குஞ்சு முதல் முறையாக கூட்டுக்கு வெளியே உள்ள உலகத்தின் பிரம்மாண்டத்தைக் கண்டுபயந்து தயங்கி நிற்கும் அந்தத் தருணத்தில் தாய்க்கழுகு அதனை முன்னோக்கித் தள்ளியிராவிட்டால் அந்த சுதந்திரத்தையும், ஆனந்தத்தையும், தைரியத்தையும் அந்தக் கழுகுக்குஞ்சு தன்வாழ்நாளில் என்றென்றைக்கும் கண்டிருக்க முடியாது. பறக்க அறியாத அந்தக் குஞ்சை கூட்டினைவிட்டு வெளியே தாய்ப்பறவை தள்ளிய போது அது ஒருவிதக் கொடூரச் செயலாகத் தோன்றினாலும்பொறுத்திருந்து விளைவைப் பார்க்கும் யாருமே அந்தச் செயல் அந்தக் குஞ்சிற்குப் பேருதவி என்பதைமறுக்க முடியாது

ஒவ்வொரு புதிய சூழ்நிலையும் யாருக்கும் ஒருவித பதட்டத்தையும், பயத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடும். ஆனால் அந்தக் காரணத்திற்காகவே அந்த சூழ்நிலைகளையும், அனுபவத்தையும் மறுப்பதுவாழ்வின் பொருளையே மறுப்பது போலத் தான். கப்பல் துறைமுகத்தில் இருப்பது தான் அதற்குமுழுப்பாதுகாப்பாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் கப்பலை உருவாக்குவது அதை துறைமுகத்தில் நிறுத்திவைக்க அல்ல. கப்பலின் உபயோகமும் அப்படி நிறுத்தி வைப்பதில் இல்லை. கழுகிற்கும்,கப்பலுக்கும் மட்டுமல்ல, மனிதனுக்கும் இந்த உண்மை பொருந்தும்

தாய்க்கழுகு தான் குஞ்சாக இருக்கையில் முதல் முதலில் தள்ளப்பட்டதை எண்ணிப்பார்த்து “நான்பட்ட அந்தக் கஷ்டம் என் குஞ்சு படக்கூடாது. என் குஞ்சிற்கு அந்தப் பயங்கர அனுபவம் வராமல்பார்த்துக் கொள்வேன்” என்று நினைக்குமானால் அதன் குஞ்சு பலவீனமான குஞ்சாகவே கூட்டிலேயேஇருந்து இறக்க நேரிடும். ஆனால் அந்த முட்டாள்தனத்தை தாய்க்கழுகு செய்ததாக சரித்திரம்இல்லை

அந்த தாய்க்கழுகின் அறிவுமுதிர்ச்சி பல பெற்றோர்களிடம் இருப்பதில்லை. “நான் பட்ட கஷ்டங்கள்என் குழந்தைகள் படக்கூடாது” என்று சொல்லக்கூடிய பெற்றோர்களை இன்று நாம் நிறையவேபார்க்கிறோம். ஒரு காலத்தில் கூட்டுக் குடும்பமும் அதில் கும்பலாகக் குழந்தைகளும் இருந்த போதுபெற்றோர்களுக்குத் தங்கள் ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தை மீதும் தனிக்கவனம் வைக்க நேரம் இருந்ததில்லை.அதற்கான அவசியம் இருப்பதாகவும் அவர்கள் நினைத்ததில்லை.

ஆனால் இந்தக் காலத்தில் ஓரிரு குழந்தைகள் மட்டுமே உள்ள நிலையில் பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள்குழந்தைகளுக்கு மிக நல்ல வாழ்க்கை அமைத்துக் கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் குறியாகஇருக்கிறார்கள். அதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால் தான் பட்ட கஷ்டங்கள் எதையும் தங்கள் குழந்தைகள்படக்கூடாது என்று நினைக்கும் போது பாசமிகுதியால் அவர்கள் அந்தக் கஷ்டங்கள் தந்த பாடங்களின்பயனைத் தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு அளிக்கத் தவறி விடுகிறார்கள். அதற்காக “நான் அந்தக் காலம்பள்ளிக்கூடம் செல்ல பல மைல்கள் நடந்தேன். அதனால் நீயும் நட” என்று பெற்றோர்கள் சொல்லவேண்டும் என்று சொல்லவில்லை. வசதிகளும், வாய்ப்புகளும் பெருகி உள்ள இந்தக் காலத்தில்அப்படிச் சொல்வது அபத்தமாகத் தான் இருக்கும்.

இன்றைய நவீன வசதி வாய்ப்புகளின் பலனை பிள்ளைகளுக்கு அளிப்பது அவசியமே. தேவையேஇல்லாத கஷ்டங்களை பிள்ளைகள் படத் தேவையில்லைதான். ஆனால் ‘எந்தக் கஷ்டமும், எந்தக்கசப்பான அனுபவமும் என் பிள்ளை படக்கூடாது’ என்று நினைப்பது அந்தப் பிள்ளையின்உண்மையான வளர்ச்சியைக் குலைக்கும் செயலே ஆகும்.

New “Malaysia Airlines ” set to Fly From September 1….

The state-run airline’s sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, has this week appointed an Administrator to facilitate the transfer of selected assets and liabilities from the existing Malaysian Airline System Berhad to new company Malaysia Airlines Berhad. The current business will continue to operate through to August 31, 2015, with the new operator, effectively a start-up, taking to the air from September 1, 2015.

Troubled Asian national carrier Malaysia Airlines will be completely revamped as a business through the remainder of the year as its new boss takes drastic action to return the loss-making operator to profitability. Christoph Mueller, who recently joined as chief executive officer from Aer Lingus has played important roles in the restructuring the Irish carrier and other European flag carriers.

The state-run airline’s sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, has this week appointed an Administrator to facilitate the transfer of selected assets and liabilities from the existing Malaysian Airline System Berhad to new company Malaysia Airlines Berhad. The current business will continue to operate through to August 31, 2015, with the new operator, effectively a start-up, taking to the air from September 1, 2015.

The voluntary administration follows the passing of a special Malaysia Airlines administration act by both houses of the Malaysian Parliament last year to provide for “an effective, efficient and seamless means to transition the business, property, rights, liabilities and affairs”.

The transition of the business is a key component of the 12-point MAS Recovery Plan, which was announced on in August last year to restructure the national carrier and set it on a path towards sustainable profitability. The process also includes conditional investment funding by Khazanah of up to RM6 billion ($1.66 billion), disbursed on a staggered basis and subject to the fullfillment of strict conditions.

Christoph Mueller, Chief Executive Officer Designate of the new airline, said: “This appointment does not affect our daily operations or existing reservations. All Malaysia Airlines flights, schedules, and reservations continue to operate as normal. I assure you our operations are very much business as usual.”

The ‘new’ Malaysia Airlines is expected to operate under a new brand and livery and there are certain to be changes to its network and fleet strategies, including the departure of some, if not all, the Airbus A380s in its fleet and which are used on its routes to London and Paris from Kuala Lumpur.

In this first official interview since taking over at Malaysia Airlines on May 1, 2015, Mueller has outlined more details of his management brief to Reuters. He said the ‘new’ Malaysia Airlines will operate like a “start-up” and would not be “a continuation of the old company in a new disguise,” but that “everything is new”.

“I’m hired to run the new company entirely on commercial terms and there’s very little margin for error,” he told Reuters in this week’s interview in the downtown Kuala Lumpur office of Malaysian state investor Khazanah. The airline is expected to cut its 20,000 workforce by around a third through the switch of airlines, with all those keeping employment with the state-run business doing so on revised contracts. .

Bai Sangli….An Unsung Hero…Who Helped More than 300 Poor Students …

This Unsung Hero is one hero provided financial help to poor students. But this is no millionaire — he made a living by pedalling a pedicab. Bai Fangli donated a total of 350,000 yuan to help more than 300 poor students continue with their studies. In 2005, he passed away at the age of 93.

For almost twenty years, to save up for his donations, Bai Fangli peddled his pedicab everyday.

His devotion started in 1987 when he was 74 years old. Bai had prepared to retire and say goodbye to his job.

But after coming back to his hometown, a group of children working in the field aroused his attention.

Bai’s daughter, Bai Jinfeng said:” He asked why the children didn’t go to school. And our relatives told him that it was because they were too poor to afford tuition. My father was worried so he decided to donate 5,000 yuan to the schools in our hometown. But for him, it was all he owned.”

As soon as he returned to Tianjin, Bai went back to work. All of his earnings went to support the needy students.

His sons and daughters tried to persuade him to change his mind, as they wanted him to enjoy a relaxing life. But the father turned a deaf ear to them.

Bai Jinfeng also said:” At that time, he went out at dawn and wouldn’t return until darkness fell. He earned 20 to 30 yuan each day. After returning home, he put his earnings in a place carefully.”

Bai had always felt regretful that he was illiterate. So he hoped the next generation could change their destiny with education.

Later on, to increase his effort to assist students in need, Bai moved to a simple room near the Tianjin Railway Station. He waited for clients 24 hours a day, ate simple food and wore discarded second-hand clothes he found.

At the age of 82 years old, to his children’s surprise, Bai made another decision.

He founded an education support fund with the help of loans.

But his life driving a pedicab continued.

Xu Xiuxiang, one of the workers of Education Support Fund, said:” He never forgot when to give money to the schools and often urged us to give his earnings to the school. Each time he gave the money he felt very happy and said he had completed his mission again.”

In 2001, he drove his pedicab to Tianjin YaoHua Middle School, to delivering his last installment of money. Nearly 90 years old, he told the students that he couldn’t work any more. All of the students and teachers were moved to tears.

Bai Fangli said:” I hope the students could study hard and get a good job, and then make contributions to our country.”

A long journey of supporting and aiding students lasted two decades.

In 2005, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Although he had kept none of his earnings for himself, he was left with his selfless spirit and love.

பெரியவாளிடம் அளவற்ற பக்தி கொண்ட ஒரு முதியவர், காலகதி அடையும் தறுவாயில் தன் மகனை அழைத்து சில விஷயங்களை சொல்லும் போது, தான் ஒருவரிடம் நூறு ரூபாய் கடன் வாங்கியதாகவும், அதை அவன் திருப்பித் தரவேண்டும் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு இறந்தார். அப்போது மகனுக்கே 62 வயது. கிராமத்தில் கர்ணம் வேலை பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். சம்பளமோ 15 ரூபாய்தான். அப்பாவின் கடைசி வாக்கை காப்பாற்ற கஷ்டப்பட்டு மூன்று வர்ஷங்களில் எப்படியோ 100 ரூபாய் சேர்த்தார். இதில் வேடிக்கை என்னவென்றால், அப்பாவுக்கு கடன் குடுத்தவர் யாரென்றே தெரியாது! சேமித்த பணத்தை யாரிடம் கொடுப்பது?

மஹாபெரியவா – திக்கற்றவருக்கு தெய்வமே துணை! ஓடினார் பெரியவாளிடம்! விவரத்தை சொன்னார்.

“இங்கதான் தர்மம் இருக்கு. இன்னொர்த்தர் சாமானை வாங்கறப்போ…….நமக்கு ரொம்ப சந்தோஷமா இருக்கும். ஆனா, அதை திருப்பித் தரணும்னா……யோசிப்போம்! அதுனால, கடன் வாங்கின பாவத்துக்கு பரிகாரமே இல்லை. இங்க, ஒங்க ரெண்டு பேரோட விவகாரம் எப்டி? வாங்கினவர் திருப்பித் தரணும்..ன்னு நெனைக்கிறார்……..குடுத்தவரோட பிள்ளையோ, அப்பா தங்கிட்ட அதைப் பத்தி சொல்லாததால, வாங்கிக்க மாட்டேங்கறார்……ஆனா, தர்மம் ஒங்களுக்கு தெரியாது இல்லியா?

MOVE over Vegas, the biggest hotel in the world is set to open in a different desert.

Towering over the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the Abraj Kudai hotel will feature 10,000 rooms, 70 restaurants and four helipads.

Set to open in 2017, the project will cost around $4.5 billion and has been designed to look like a desert fortress.

The mammoth hotel will be 45 stories high, made up of 12 towers standing on top of a 10 storey podium. There will be a shopping mall, food courts, a bus station and a huge ballroom to service the millions of people that converge on the city for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Five of the floors will be strictly off limits to guests and reserved entirely for the Saudi royal family.

Irfan Al-Alawi, director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation, told The Guardian that the hotel was proof the city was “turning into Mecca-hattan”, and lamented the little heritage left in Saudi Arabia’s holy cities.

The hotel will be built in the Manafia district, a few kilometres south of the Grand Mosque, and is funded by the Saudi Ministry of Finance and designed by the Dar Al-Handasah group.

How This Start-Up Helps Unorganised Blue-collar workers Get Better Jobs…

Bengaluru-based babajob.com is trying to help unorganised blue-collar workers get better employment.

Team that connects the employers with the right kind of workers

On learning that his boss needs another driver, autorickshaw driver Amit, in Bengaluru, recommends his cousin, Sumit. An out-of-work sharecropper, Sumit is hired, and his income doubles.

Anita works as a nanny for a well-to-do family in Mumbai. When another family she knows needs a cook, she recommends her sister, Sunita.

Most blue-collar jobs in India are offered and secured through such recommendations. But aspirations are changing and most employment seekers in the segment are now looking to work for brands that pay good salaries.

Dedicated to connecting the right job seeker with the right employer in this unstructured segment, Bengaluru-based start-up babajob.com uses the internet, mobile apps and a variety of other routes.

With a fresh round of capital from SEEK Ltd, an Australian online placement service, it now plans to expand.

Fight against poverty

After nine years in Microsoft, Sean Blagsvedt moved to Bengaluru in 2004, to head the program management and advanced prototyping team of Microsoft Research India. He was focusing on mobile phones and technology in emerging markets.

“I came across a Duke University research study on poverty alleviation. It said the primary path out of poverty was income diversification by securing another job. The study also identified that successful income diversification involved knowing somebody with access to information about the jobs. This led to the idea for a Village LinkedIn, which gradually morphed into babajob.com,” said Blagsvedt, now chief executive officer (CEO) of the start-up, launched in 2007.

The main difficulty, said Blagsvedt, was reaching the job seekers – delivery guys, drivers, security guards and household helps. Most of them do not traditionally have internet access.

“We tried working with non-government organisations and telephone companies. But we found that mobile web and telephone services like Miss Call for a Job reached more people by using traditional media like the press. Connecting with aspirational job seekers was the most effective acquisition channel. It allowed us to reach three million job seekers in 2015.”

Missed call for a job

Two of the most frequent responses that successful job seekers provide babajob.com are 20 per cent salary raise and reduced commute to work.

The site now has about three million job seekers for 2.5 million vacant positions.

“Our primary point of contact is a missed call. A job seeker calls 08880004444. Then, our system automatically calls the number back and generates a profile for him/her through our interactive voice response system. The job seeker is registered on our website,” said Blagsvedt.

The company is now processing about 150,000 job applicants every month.

“According to our estimates, we are able to place nearly 2,000 job seekers every month. We have placed more than 500,000 job seekers since inception,” the CEO said.

The revenue model is simple. The service is free for job seekers but the employers have to pay for services, depending on the package they choose.

Each employer is assigned a recruitment support executive to optimise their campaign. Those who plan to hire in bulk get special packages. Applications through the website are about 47 per cent (combining WebApply and Web), mobile web applications account for 43.7 per cent of the traffic, while voice accounts for 9.2 per cent (including call centre), and Android has a 0.01 per cent share.

Experts feel it’s no mean task to raise awareness about digital platforms among job seekers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The company believes smartphones are becoming popular among blue-collar workers. The road ahead would involve expanding the digital footprint.

The firm did not share information about its revenue, but said it would look at providing value-added services to employers and job-seekers to boost margins.

The recent funding would be used to expand the team, develop the mobile app and improve services.

SEEK and its affiliate firms are the largest global online job marketplace across Africa, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Mexico, New Zealand and southeast Asia.

In a statement it had said, “SEEK is a strong partner, with a common vision of using technology to connect as many to better jobs, especially in emerging markets.”

Asked about a possible geographical expansion, Blagsvedt did not rule it out. He said they were collectively excited about the association with SEEK and there was a lot to explore.

The target would be to reach hundreds of millions of people across the developing world in such a way that they are able to use the platform to seek jobs.

The start-up had earlier raised an undisclosed amount from GrayGhost Ventures and Khosla Impact in 2012, with a view to connecting all Indians to better jobs worldwide, especially in the Asia-Pacific.

Babajob is attempting to use technology to organise an unorganised market. It is a great opportunity but there are many challenges. Both employers and job seekers have to be made aware and educated about the service.

This is no small challenge when you consider the socio-economic profile of job seekers.

The user experience has to be seamless even as you scale. Unit economics have to be improved so that scale-up results in good profitability.

I believe the lower income workers that companies like Babajob are targeting are rapidly adopting smartphones. However there is great variation across this population, especially as you go away from the major cities.

So, it will be important for Babajob to retain a hybrid approach, i.e both offline and online channels in order to provide widespread access.

Companies targeting this space will have to remain innovative and learn to leverage the old word-of-mouth networking techniques with a technology overlay to win in this market.

I would expect to see very strong growth in the customer base and repeat buying, improving unit economics driving rapid improvement in profitability.
