Image of the day… Awesome Video of A Plane Crossing SUN …!!!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Noel Keating tried all last year to capture video of a plane crossing the sun. On January 3, 2015, he did it!

EarthSky Facebook friend Noel Keating captured this cool video of a plane crossing the face of the sun on January 3, 2015. He wrote:

I saw the plane way off in the distance, and I did what I normally do. I used the vapor trail of the plane to guide a line across the sky towards the sun to see it if would line up. This one did :)! As the plane got closer to the sun, I couldn’t see it any more so I just viewed it through the Camera LCD display … boy, was I happy when it passed by the solar disc with all the sunspots in clear view.

Long Distance Conveyor Belts….

Employed in nearly all kinds of industries, conveyor belts provide an excellent mean for moving cargo and materials from one place to another. In the mining industry, they are particularly useful because they allow mineral ores to be transported over rough terrain or difficult-to-access areas, and offer a cost-effective and reliable way of moving a constant stream of material that would otherwise have to be trucked from one location to the next. The high levels of productivity and low operating costs involved have led to a widespread adoption of belt conveyor systems. And because mines are typically located in remote areas, these conveyor belts stretches tens of kilometers. In fact, the mining industry owns some of the longest conveyor belts in the world designed to transport mineral ores from the mines to the refineries or ports or stockpile centers.

The world’s longest conveyor belt is located in the Western Sahara. It is 98 km long and transports phosphate rocks from the mines of Bou Craa to the port city of El-Aaiun. From there, cargo vessels transport the phosphates to various countries, where they are utilized in fertilizer production. The belt is visible as a straight line in satellite photos, and at some places, easily recognizable by a white strip of phosphates that lay strewn across the dusty brown desert by the action of strong Saharan winds. This conveyor belt that connects Bou Craa with El Aaiún, can carry 2,000 metric tons of rock per hour.

In the state of Meghalaya in India lies the world’s longest single-belt international conveyor. It is about 17 km long and conveys limestone and shale at 960 tons/hour, from a quarry in India to a cement factory at Chhatak Bangladesh. The belt is 7 km long in India and 10 km long in Bangladesh. The entire conveyor has been put on trestles.

America to Australia in 6 Hours !!!

From America to Australia in Under 6 Hours

Just 100 years ago, getting from America to Europe was a voyage that took several days by ocean liners. With the invention of airplanes, that travel time was significantly shortened to under 24 hours. At the apex of the era of transatlantic flight, the Concorde was able to fly 100 passengers at mach 2.0 speeds from New York to London in just over 3.5 hours.

Now, the European Space Agency (ESA) just greenlighted the next stage of modern transportation – the hypersonic flight. The ESA has approved a new round of funding to project LAPCAT (Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies).
Hypersonic Plane

Ignoring its funny name, the new plane will fly at mach 5.0 speeds (that’s five times the speed of sound!), using liquid hydrogen engines. The planes will be able to travel from England to Australia in four hours, carry 300 passengers and even fly to space in just 15 minutes.

The new kind of engine is being developed by the British company Reaction Engines, who is said to invest over 60 million GBP in the development, and are going to start builing a full-scale prototype engine.

Hypersonic Plane

Current jet engines require that airplanes carry liquid oxygen as a coolant because in speeds beyond mach 3.0 the engines cannot use external oxygen for cooling. The new type of engine can use external oxygen freely, allowing it to cool down its engines from over 1,000°c (1,832°f) to -150°c (-328°f) in a fraction of a second.
Hypersonic Plane

Experts are hailing this development as the biggest advancement in aviation since the invention of the jet engine. The cost of a single plane is estimated to be a whopping $1.1 Billion and will have no windows.

Hypersonic passenger plane LAPCAT A2 explainer

The Long-term Advanced Propulsion Concept and Technologies (LAPCAT) was developed by British company Reaction Engines Limited (REL) and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The 139-meter long hypersonic plane has four liquid hydrogen-powered Synergistic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) engines and can carry up to 300 passengers.
It can travel up to 6,100 kilometer per hour – five times faster than the Airbus A380. By using liquid hydrogen as fuel instead of fossil fuel it is also greener and would only produce water vapor and nitrous oxide instead of carbon emissions. Story of Rock Garden as Revealed by its Creator Nek Chand Who Has Turned 90 !!!…

DEEP inside his massive garden of handmade waterfalls and sculptures, Nek Chand recalls toiling away secretly in the dead of night for a staggering 18 years to create his wonderland in north India.

Riding his bicycle after dark to a state-owned forest, Chand spent night after night clearing patches of ground and transforming the landscape into a majestic garden that would eventually cover eight hectares.

“I started building this garden as a hobby” in the 1950s, Chand told AFP in a rare interview on the eve of his 90th birthday on Monday.

“For 18 years nobody came to know. There was a forest here, who would come here and what for? There were no roads to come and go,” Chand said nostalgically, seated in the garden that has become a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors a day.

After the deadly violence and upheaval of partition in 1947, India set about building a capital for Punjab state, carved out of a region that stretched across the border into newly formed Pakistan.

From the tonnes of building materials and rubbish that followed, Chand carefully collected what he considered gems while working as a lowly roads inspector in the upcoming Chandigarh city.

Pottery pieces, glass, tiles and even broken bathroom sinks were used to make sculptures of men and women, fairies and demons, elephants, monkeys and gods.

“I had many ideas, I was thinking all the time. I began carrying all the material on my bicycle and collecting it here,” Chand said of his garden of mosaic pathways, hidden chambers and courtyards.

“I did three to four rounds on my cycle each day. I saw beauty and art in what people said was junk.”

‘Like reliving Willy Wonka’

When his secret was finally discovered in 1976, authorities threatened demolition, claiming Chand had violated strict land laws.

But an amazed public rallied behind him, leading to his appointment as head of the newly opened Rock Garden of Chandigarh.

Chand stepped up his creation of hundreds of sculptures — mostly made from broken household material and discarded personal items including electric sockets, switches, bangles and bicycle frames.

Some made of broken glass bangles show girls dancing, others of ceramic pieces depict men at a party pouring glasses of whiskey.

Ticket sales grew as word of the secret garden spread, with some 3,000 people from across the country and overseas now wandering through daily.

“It’s so amazing. It’s something like reliving Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” Jasmine Paul, a resident of Vancouver who was holidaying in India, told AFP.

“It is just like the fairy tales that you grow up reading.” With no formal education in art or sculpture, Chand drew inspiration from his childhood when he played near a river flowing through his village in what is now Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Chand and his family were forced to flee across the border during partition because they were Hindus, finally settling in Chandigarh, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana states.

“That is why there is a childlike quality to the sculptures,” said Alan Cesarno, a British volunteer with the Nek Chand Foundation that was set up in 1997 to raise funds for the garden’s upkeep.

“When you look around you realise that it is actually a child’s version of a fantasy kingdom,” he told AFP standing next to one of the several waterfalls.

Conservation challenges

Chand’s statues have found their way into museums across the world, including at the National Children’s Museum in Washington, the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the RIBA gallery in Liverpool in 2007.

Back home, the garden is facing conservation challenges, including a lack of funds from the state government which takes the ticket sales, according to volunteers.

Vandalism has been reported more than once and enthusiastic visitors often climb or lean on the structures, damaging their fragile pieces.

“In a country known more for slums and garbage dumps, the rock garden stands as an exceptional example,” said Mani Dhillon, a volunteer involved in the garden’s upkeep.

“It is perhaps the only place of its kind in the entire world. The administration and the people must realise its importance, they must come forward and save it before it’s too late,” she told AFP.

While Chand still oversees the garden as its founding head with near daily visits, his age and failing eyesight mean he can no longer spend the long hours needed to create new sculptures.

He is however undaunted by the challenges facing his more than half a century’s work, saying he has faith in God from which he draws his strength.

“I am not scared of anything. Had I been scared, how would I have worked in the dead of the night in the jungle?”

Rub your eyes all you want but it’s true. This young woman’s skills with the football are unbelievable and this video will give you much joy and motivation to find and nurture a talent, maybe. Melody Donchet, winner of the 2014 Street Style World Final held in Salvador, Brazil, makes sweet music with her footwork as she juggles a football, watched by a thrilled audience. She does hand-stands and swirls her legs like a ribbon, all the while balancing a football like it’s no big deal. With the crowd cheering her on and the judges unanimously declaring her victorious, there is no doubt whatsoever that Melody’s skill with the ball makes her everything that a winner ought to be.

The First Website Ever Made !!!

Today I found out what the first website ever made was.  Simply put, it was a website made by the World Wide Web’s creator Tim Berners-Lee, who was working for CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research).

first ever webserver

The first ever website was published on August 6, 1991 and served up a page explaining the World Wide Web project and giving information on how users could setup a web server and how to create their own websites and web pages, as well as how they could search the web for information.  The URL for the first ever web page put up on the first ever website was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

This link is no longer active and, unfortunately, nobody bothered to make a copy of this original page, which tended to be updated daily anyways.  The earliest version of it that was recorded was in 1992 and a copy of that page can be found here.

The first ever web browser, called WorldWideWeb, was also created by Tim Berners-Lee.  This browser had a nice graphical user interface; allowed for multiple fonts and font sizes; allowed for downloading and displaying images, sounds, animations, movies, etc.; and had the ability to let users edit the web pages being viewed in order to promote collaboration of information.  However, this browser only ran on NeXT Step’s OS, which most people didn’t have because of the high cost of these systems (this company was owned by Steve Jobs, so you can imagine the cost bloat ;-)).

In order to provide a browser anyone could use, the next browser he developed was much simpler and, thus, versions of it could be quickly developed to be able to run on just about any computer, pretty much regardless of processing power or operating system.  It was a bare-bones inline browser (command line / text only), which didn’t have most of the features of his original browser, but at least could be used on pretty much any computer out there at the time and allowed people to access the information on the web.

The first web server was also written by Tim Berners-Lee called CERN HTTPd, the latter part standing for “Hypertext Transfer Protocol daemon”.   For those not familiar, a daemon is simply a program that more or less runs in the background on a system doing whatever it is programmed to do; in this case, listening for and responding to requests for web pages that exist on the machine it is running on; thus this daemon would be called a “server”.
