Meet the Parents of Sumit Nagal… Wimbledon Boys’ Doubles Champion ….

‘Even if we ate our chappatis with pickle, we ensured proper food for Sumit.’

Wimbledon boys’ doubles champion Sumit Nagal’s father tells Manu Shankar/Rediff.com about his son’s tough rise, Mahesh Bhupathi’s incredible support and the hurdles ahead.

When you enter Nangloi, west Delhi, and ask for directions to the Nagal home, you observe a glint in people’s eyes. A hint of pride.

Sumit Nagal’s home is now a local landmark.

Local residents may not know precisely what the teenager has achieved, but the constant buzz about him on television has added to their curiosity.

Some say he is a kabaddi star, some tell you he won a medal in judo while others assert that he was part of the junior hockey team that won a medal.

They could, I guess, be excused for their ignorance since the mother and sister of Wimbledon’s latest boys’ doubles champion were national kabaddi and hockey players themselves.

Meanwhile, Suresh and Krishna Nagal are waiting for yet another journalist who wants to chat with them about their son’s success at Wimbledon.

Sumit, partnering Vietnam’s Nam Hoang Ly, defeated Reilly Opelka of the United States and Japan’s Akira Santillan 7-6, 6-4 to win the boys’ doubles title at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships, only the sixth Indian to win a Grand Slam junior title.

Yuki Bhambri was the last Indian to taste similar success at the junior level when he won the Australian Open boys’ singles title in 2009. Ramanathan Krishnan (Wimbledon, 1954), Ramesh Krishnan (French Open and Wimbledon, 1979) and Leander Paes (Wimbledon 1990, US Open 1991) are the other Indian junior Grand Slam singles champions. Sania Mirza won the Wimbledon girls’ doubles title in 2003, partnering Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova.

How did Sumit get into tennis?

We got Sumit enrolled at the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) tennis academy in Paschim Vihar, when he was 7. We are fond of tennis, so wanted him to get into the sport. Everyone sends their kids for cricket coaching, so I thought of putting Sumit into a different sport.

When he turned seven, I got him a Head tennis racquet, which was expensive at that time. It cost Rs 2,000 and I could see he liked the sport very much.

Cricket is commercialised these days and that’s why I wanted Sumit to play tennis. It is such a beautiful game!

At what age did Sumit win his first medal?

Sumit won his first medal, a gold, when he was 8 at a tournament organised by the DDA, in the Under-10 category. He had talent and his coaches used to tell me that tennis comes naturally to him.

When he was 10 he would convincingly beat the Under-14 or Under-12 boys. After that he won several medals outside the country, in Germany, Canada.

Tennis is an expensive sport. What were the difficulties you faced?

Sumit practiced at the Siri Fort Sports complex, which is about 27 km away from Nangloi. So the travelling took its toll. We used to travel in packed buses.

While studying at the Modern Child School, he used to come back by 1:30 pm, have his lunch and then leave for coaching, as he had to be there by 3.

We ensured that he had a proper diet, as this is a very physical sport. Humnein chahe achaar se roti khayi ho, ladke ka dhayaan zaroor rakha (Even if we ate our chappatis with pickle, we ensured proper food for Sumit).

It was after buying a racquet for him that we built our upper floor so that he could practice upstairs by hitting the ball against the wall.

The school authorities accommodated us a lot. There were several occasions when he had tournaments, they would adjust his schedule and allow him to come to school after his matches.

When did the jump from DDA’s coaching to the RK Khanna Academy happen?

In December 2007 Apollo Tyres asked Mahesh Bhupathi along with foreign coaches to conduct a nationwide talent hunt. They  selected 14 bright prospects and train them for the future. They had four rounds before the final selection process in Delhi.

It was there that Mahesh spotted Sumit and said there is talent in the kid. Frankly speaking, I didn’t expect him to do so well. There were more than 5,000 kids in the trials and I wasn’t expecting him to bag a place, let alone work with Mahesh.

Sumit was the youngest of them all and had to go to the academy in Bengaluru.

What has been Mahesh Bhupathi’s contribution to Sumit’s growth as a tennis player?

Whatever Sumit has achieved today is due to Mahesh Bhupathi’s help and blessings. During the Apollo Tyres talent hunt, Sumit held Mahesh’s hand and urged him to come see his game. He was pretty impressed by the kid’s confidence level.

His mother, who accompanied Sumit to the trials, did not know who Mahesh was. Once he got into the academy, Bhupathi ensured that Sumit played in Europe to gain exposure. He supported us financially big time too.

They (Mahesh and Sumit) are pretty close and speak on a regular basis, discussing finer points of the game.

Sumit also took part in the singles at Wimbledon, but failed to go through. Were you disappointed?

He was aiming for singles glory at Wimbledon, but there were lot of complications which may have hampered his singles game.

First and foremost, his visa was delayed. He could only go to Wimbledon a day before the tournament commenced.

Secondly, at the airport, the Air India staff were not letting him fly as he was under 18 and asked him to bring along either a coach or guardian. His coach Mariano Delfino was supposed to meet him at Heathrow.

After spending considerable time explaining that he was going to represent the country in Wimbledon Air India let him fly.

In the commotion he missed the direct flight to Heathrow and had to travel to Germany, then take a train to London before just making it to the tournament.

Naturally, he was jet-lagged and tired. How can one expect him to do well?

Despite that he took the game against Juan Pablo Ficovich in the first round to the third set.

Coaches play an important role in the development of one’s game. Do you rue the fact he doesn’t have a personal coach?

A personal coach will enhance his game. At the moment he is missing one. A coach reads match situations better and is able to tell you the difference between a correct shot and a wrong one.

In Germany, when he practices, the coach records his practice games and then points out the mistakes so that he can work on his game. Otherwise, it’s like two friends playing the game.

At the same time, we want someone who is good. Often you find people who won’t even know the full form of AITA (the All India Tennis Association) or ITF (the International Tennis Federation) and are in the position of coach at various academies.

Why Albert Einstein Matters ….?

Scientist, humanist, icon, Albert Einstein offered a lot more to the world than E=MC2, which is probably just one of the reasons why he remains one of the most enduring figures in human history.

So what lessons can we learn from a life less ordinary? Virender Kapoor tells us just that.

In his new book, Virender Kapoor looks to Albert Einstein’s life for lessons that are relevant to our lives today.

Innovation, the Einstein Way gives a brief biographical account of the scientist to introduce him to his readers and through 12 chapters, looks at some of the lessons that we could learn from a life less ordinary.

“What set Einstein apart from several others before and after him was the fact that he wasn’t just a scientist but also a humanitarian. He was a philanthropist, an outspoken critic of the war and was dead against the atom bomb, though several believe otherwise,” Kapoor says.

“Few scientists have reached the iconic status of Albert Einstein,” he adds. “And there is a lot we can learn from him.”

Kapoor is the former director of Pune’s Symbiosis Institute of Management and the founder of Management Institute for Leadership and Excellence.

He is also the author of Leadership: The Gandhi Way, A Wonderful Boss: Great People to Work With and Passion Quotient.

In an interview with Rediff.com, Virender Kapoor spells out some learnings:

What is the single most important lesson from Einstein’s life for young Indians?

Lack of resources need not be an excuse for lack of research.

Einstein honed his investigative skills as a patent officer. People would invent things and he would to approve the patent.

He didn’t have expensive labs at his disposal yet in 1909 at 26, he published four top class academic papers.

Today, we have it a lot easier, courtesy the Internet. So, really, there is no excuse to not be able to come up with innovative ideas or frankly just get ahead in life.

Saying ‘Don’t chase money’ is easier said than done. How does one put this into practice?

I don’t agree with that.

I do believe that chasing money won’t get you very far.

If you need a 3,000-rupee shirt to measure your worth, then your worth is Rs 3,000.

If you are going to measure your worth by money, you are making a big mistake.

Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Chasing money is a sign of inferiority.

Look for self respect rather than selfies!

Follow the right kind of role models.

When APJ Abdul Kalam began his career, he wasn’t chasing the money. He ended up living in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

If you follow your passion and beliefs, money will follow.

In the book, you’ve spoken about the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Are there any circumstances under which teamwork can be a hindrance?

There are very few circumstances when collaboration and teamwork can be a hindrance.

Writing books is one such task. It is a lonely road and you must walk it alone.

Even so there are exceptions; you have people who collaborate with co-authors or researchers who team up with their peers.

But teamwork and collaboration are essential to everyone’s existence.

It is best if one learns its importance. Respect your team members, give them due credit; don’t snatch away their moment in the sun.

You have spoken about imagination in your book and how it is possible to awaken it. For the benefit of our readers, please can you elaborate?

Well for one, start imagining; let your mind run free.

One of the best ways to spark your imagination is by reading fiction, literature and poetry.

Work with people who have a great sense of imagination and you will find that it will slowly but surely rub off on you.

Also, learn to give the task at hand everything you have; immerse yourself in the problem. And, with a little bit of imagination, you will realise that you too may have a Eureka moment, much like our very own Archimedes in a bathtub! 🙂

A lot of Einstein’s formulae are a product of situations he had imagined.

Daydreaming also contributed a lot to Einstein’s work. And it can help you too.

Give yourself a break every few hours; take a long walk; idle around… and just be!

There is a lot of wisdom to what Picasso said: Without great solitude, no serious work is possible.

So learn to get some solitude!

What made music such an important part of Einstein’s life? And what can we learn from that?

Music was an integral part of Einstein’s life.

He believed that music exists in the universe and masters such as Mozart simply plucked it from there.

And he often thought he himself did the same: pick up laws of physics from the nature around him. Which wasn’t untrue at all because laws of physics are in fact the laws of nature.

At a really basic level, music, or any hobby really, can help you expand your horizons.

It opens up gates of your imagination and inspire you to think beyond the single track that your mind may be on.

Very often, Einstein would take a break from work just to play the piano or the violin and then go back to it.

Why are the Liberal Arts so important?

A lot of our senior managers and entrepreneurs these days are graduates from IITs and IIMs. Having spent a large part of their formative years either learning engineering or management lessons, they miss out on the wonder of words and creativity.

Liberal arts help you get in touch with the softer side of humanity, where a word could mean multiple things and two and two needn’t always be four.

An education in liberal arts opens up your mind in a way tech and management education cannot.

It helps you think differently, think creatively and most importantly, think humanely.

You’ve also spoken about the importance of humour. Is it at all possible to grow a funny bone?

More yes than no.

I have a friend who is very grim on most days but the moment he finds himself surrounded by a jovial lot of people, he tends to loosen up.

So my theory is that it is possible to grow a funny bone. If you surround yourself by people who are genuinely funny, chances are you will learn to appreciate the joke too.

Einstein’s brain was supposedly differently constructed from the rest of ours — it helped the neurons travel faster — but is it possible to raise one’s IQ?

Scientifically, a high IQ is a genetic bonanza.

But people have different opinions. While your brain is hardwired to do certain things, it is possible to use it more efficiently.

Let me explain: Just because someone has a better gun, doesn’t make her/him a better shooter. In the hand of a better marksman a smaller gun can cause more damage.

Your brain is an apparatus, quite like the gun. And you are the marksman. If you can put it to good use, it will serve you well.

At the same time the human brain comes with limitations. Not everyone can be a chess grandmaster like Viswanathan Anand but with consistent efforts you can become a better chess player than you already are.

Finally, could you tell us a little about disruptive thinking and how it can help young Indians?

Disruptive thinking is what changes the world.

When people question the very basis of existing beliefs, invariably great things come out of it.

It could be something as large as Copernicus’ questioning the prevalent belief that the sun revolved around the earth or something as minor as making an omelette in a way that has never been made before.

Questioning everything all the time, invariably leads to disruptive thinking.

It is what makes entrepreneurs run successful companies or employees rising up the food chain faster than the others.

Every new idea is a result of disruptive thinking.

And it may be weird or silly even but it is what pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps change yourself, your environment and possible even the world.

Mudras – Healing Through Your Fingers

Most people associate yoga with a person sitting in the lotus position, hands on their knees with their forefinger and thumb touching. This positioning of the fingers is called “Mudra” and just like pressure points, this technique can affect our physical and emotional states.

Mudras have been known in the East for thousands of years, not only in meditation or yoga, but also as part of the treatment for various physical and mental ailments. At times, people put their fingers in the mudra position without even knowing it. There are hundreds of mudra variations, which include your head, hands and body, each one helping with different ailments. This list will show you the 10 easiest mudras that you can perform everywhere and at any time – simply choose the one that corresponds to your problem and stick to it for a few days, until you feel better.

Please note that there is no need to apply pressure on your fingers. Perform these exercises with both hands simultaneously, preferably while sitting down.

 

1. Gyan Mudra (Knowledge)

Mudras

The tip of your forefinger touches the tip of the thumb while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: This mudra stimulates the pituitary gland, which controls your metabolism, as well as your sleep cycles. Gyan helps improve your memory, prevents insomnia, provides clarity of mind and can help in preventing dementia.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.

 

2. Prithvi Mudra (Earth)

The tip of the thumb touches the tip of your ring finger while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: Prithvi helps you with physical and mental weaknesses, prevents chronic lethargy, provides an energy boost and reduces the symptoms of osteoporosis. Other benefits include prevention of dryness of the skin, rashes, aging, hair loss, and even stomach ulcers.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.

 

3. Varuna Mudra (Water)

Mudras

The tip of the pinky touches the tip of the thumb while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: Varuna helps balance your mental state, as well as your bodily fluids (it prevents dryness of the eyes, mouth, digestive system and skin). This mudra also aids in stopping cramps and constipation, as well as regulates the menstrual cycle and other hormonal irregularities in women. On top of all of these benefits, it can prevent joint degradation, anemia, and even may improve your sense of taste.

Perform for 45 minutes every day, or for 15 minutes 3 times a day. Avoid if you’re dealing with excess water retention.

4. Vayu Mudra (Air)

Mudras

The thumb holds the forefinger down while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: Vayu helps reduce stress and anxiety, as well as the intensity of your voice. It aids in decision making and impatience, shyness, unease, the hiccups, cramps, dizziness, and even Parkinson’s symptoms.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.

 

5. Shunya Mudra (Emptiness)

Mudras

The thumb holds the middle finger down while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: Shunya is effective in cases of earaches and serves as a confidence booster. This position also prevents a feeling of emptiness, tinnitus, and even vertigo.

In cases of severe earaches, vertigo or numbness of a limb, perform this mudra until the problem is solved. Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day. Note that experts recommend stopping once the problem is over.

6. Surya Mudra (Sun)

Mudras

The thumb holds the ring finger down while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: This mudra helps reactivate the thyroid, lose weight and revitalize the digestive system. It also aids in reducing stress and anxiety while keeping you focused on your goals. Another benefit of the Surya is in keeping you warm if you’re suffering from chills.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day. Pay attention to your body temperature while in this position, and stop once your body starts to get too warm.

7. Prana Mudra (Life)

Mudras

The tips of the ring finger and pinky touch your thumb while the rest of the fingers remain straight.

Targets: Prana helps strengthen your mind and can boost your motivation. It also improves your eyesight, reduces tiredness and depression, and boosts the immune system.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.

 

8. Apana Mudra (Digestion)

Mudras

The middle and ring fingers are held by the thumb.

Targets: Apana helps regulate your kidneys and intestines, thus aiding in cleaning your body from toxins and preventing constipation. Other benefits are the prevention of nausea and vomiting, as well as a burning sensation while urinating. This position is particularly useful for diabetics as it regulates blood glucose levels.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.

9. Apana Vayu Mudra (Heart)

Mudras

The forefinger touches the base of the thumb while the middle and ring fingers are held by the thumb. The pinky remains straight.

Targets: Apana Vayu helps prevent heart diseases and other heart-related problems. In addition, it prevents gases and heartburn.

Perform for 30-45 minutes every day, or for 10-15 minutes 3 times a day. If you’ve experienced heart problems in the past, it is particularly recommended to practice this position daily.

 

10. Linga Mudra (Heat)

Mudras

Interlock your fingers while keeping the left thumb straight. Wrap the left thumb with your forefinger and right thumb, both of which should touch.

Targets: Linga helps increase body temperature and reduces phlegm and congestion. It strengthens the lungs and is particularly effective in cases of a cold, flu, sinus infections and asthma. It is also known to aid in men’s sexual virility.

It is recommended that you do not practice this mudra regularly, but rather only when you’re sick. Once the symptoms are gone, stop practicing it.

Through their good teachings, the path opened by the God-people of the past is again made clear and smooth. But how is one to know the consequence of the soul’s yearning for the Lord’s Advent? Since this can’t be known, one has to pray until the world is established in happiness. The happiness of the world is the sign of His arrival; if this is understood, then it is easy to recognise the Avatar immediately. It is then that the religion of truth(sathya), of compassion (daya), of spiritual wisdom (jnana) and of love (prema) will grow and prosper. So until these are firmly rooted, people must continue their prayers. That is the responsibility of the people.

தமிழில் தோன்றிய முதல் காப்பியம் சிலப்பதிகாரம். அவலக் காப்பியமான சிலப்பதிகாரம் மங்கல நிகழ்ச்சியான கோவலன்-கண்ணகி திருமணத்தில் தொடங்குவது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இது, இளங்கோவடிகளின் உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனையை காட்டுகிறது.

கணிகையர் குலத்தைச் சார்ந்த மாதவிக்குக் காப்பியத்தில் கண்ணகிக்கு நிகரான ஓர் இடத்தி னைத் தந்திருப்பதும், இல்லறத்தைப் புகழ்ந்து கண்ணகியின் கற்பு வாழ்வை உயர்த்திக் கூறி

யிருப்பதும், கொடியவன் என எவரும் இல்லாமலே காப்பியத்தைச் சுவையாக நடத்திச் சென்றிருப்பதும் ஒரு வகையில் பார்த்தால் உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனையின் தாக்கமே எனலாம்.

பக்தி இயக்கக் காலத்தில் :பக்தி இயக்கத்தின் முன்னோடியான திருமூலர் திருமந்திரத்தில் ‘நான் பெற்ற இன்பம் பெறுக இவ்வையகம்’ என்று தாயுள்ளத்தோடு பாடியுள்ளார். உடம்பினை இழித்தும் பழித்தும் பாடாமல்- ‘உடம்பினுள்ளே உறுபொருள் கண்டேன்’ என்றும், ‘உடம்பினை யான் இருந்து ஓம்புகிறேன்’ என்றும் உடம்பின் இன்றியமையாமையை உணர்த்தும் வகையில் பாடியிருக்கிறார்.

ஆதிசங்கரரால் ‘திராவிட சிசு’ எனப் பாராட்டப் பெற்றவர் திருஞானசம்பந்தர். குழந்தை

ஞானியான அவருடைய பாடல்களில் சோர்வையோ, கலக்கத்தையோ, துயரத்தையோ

காண்பது அரிது; ஊக்கமும் நம்பிக்கையும் எழுச்சியுமே ததும்பி நிற்கும்.உதாரணமாக

“மண்ணில் நல்ல வண்ணம் வாழலாம் வைகலும்

எண்ணில் நல்ல கதிக்கு யாதுமோர் குறைவிலை

கண்ணில் நல்லதுறும் கழுமல வளநகர்ப்

பெண்ணின் நல்லாளொடும் பெருந்தகை இருந்ததே” என பாடினார்.

“ நாமார்க்கும் குடியல்லோம் நமனை அஞ்சோம்

நரகத்தில் இடர்ப்படோம் நடலை இல்லோம்

ஏமாப்போம் பிணியறியோம் பணிவோம் அல்லோம்

இன்பமே எந்நாளும் துன்பம் இல்லை”

என்னும் அப்பர் பெருமானின் வாக்கு.

ஏழாம் நுாற்றாண்டில் பிறந்த அழகிய உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனையின் வெளிப்பாடு ஆகும்.

பாரதியாரின் சிந்தனை :இருபதாம் நுாற்றாண்டின் விடியலில் தமிழால் தகுதி பெற்று, தமிழுக்குத் தகுதி சேர்த்த தனிப்பெருங் கவிஞர் பாரதியார். வாழ்ந்த காலமெல்லாம் வறுமைத் துன்பத்தில் வாடினாலும், ‘ஒன்று பரம்பொருள், நாம் அதன் மக்கள், உலகு இன்பக் கேணி’ என்றே நம்பிக்கையுடன் முழங்கினார் அவர்; ‘எத்தனை கோடி இன்பம் வைத்தாய் – எங்கள் இறைவா! இறைவா! இறைவா!’ என்றே மூன்று முறை இறைவனை விளித்துப் பாடினார் அவர்;

‘நம்பினார் கெடுவதில்லை, நான்குமறைத் தீர்ப்பு; அம்பிகையைச் சரண் புகுந்தால், அதிக வரம் பெறலாம்’ என்று தன்னம்பிக்கை சிந்தனையை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.

“ இன்று புதிதாய்ப் பிறந்தோம் என்று நீவிர்

எண்ணமதைத் திண்ணமுற இசைத்துக் கொண்டு

தின்று விளையாடி இன்புற்றிருந்து வாழ்வீர்!”

‘காட்சி’ என்னும் தலைப்பில் பாரதியார் எழுதிய வசன கவிதையிலும் அவரது உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனை அழகுற வெளிப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

“இவ்வுலகம் இனியது… மனிதர் மிகவும் இனியர்.

ஆண் நன்று. பெண் இனிது. குழந்தை இன்பம். இளமை இனிது. முதுமை நன்று. உயிர் நன்று. சாதல் இனிது”இவ்வுலகில் பிறப்புத் தொடங்கி மனிதனுடைய மூச்சுத் தொடரின் முற்றுப் புள்ளியான மரணம் வரைக்கும் அனைத்திலும் இனிமையைக் காணும், -நன்மையை நாடும் – அற்புதமான மனநிலையின் ஆற்றல் மிக்க வெளிப்பாடு இக்கவிதை.

புதிய தமிழ்க் கவிதையில் இருபதாம் நுாற்றாண்டுக் கவிதை வடிவங்களான புதுக்கவிதை, ஹைகூ ஆகியவற்றிலும் ஆங்காங்கே உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனைகள் தலைகாட்டுகின்றன. படிப்பவர் நெஞ்சில் நம்பிக்கை ஒளியைப் பாய்ச்ச வல்ல இத்தகைய கவிதைகள் ஒன்றிரண்டை இங்கே காண்போம்.

“இளம்பிறையே! உனது ஏழைமையை

நினைத்து வருந்தாதே! ஏனென்றால்

உன்னுள்ளேதான் பூர்ணசந்திரன்

புதைந்து கிடக்கிறான்”

என்பது இக்பால் படைத்துள்ள புதுக்கவிதை.

ஈரோடு தமிழன்பனின் கவிதையில்

“பத்தாவது தடவையாக விழுந்தவனுக்கு

முத்தமிட்டுச் சொன்னது பூமி:

ஒன்பது முறை எழுந்தவனல்லவா நீ?”

‘ஒரு மனிதன் தன் வாழ்க்கையில் தவறி விழுவது என்பது அவ்வளவு முக்கியம் அன்று; விழும் போதெல்லாம் அவன் விடாமல் எழ நினைப்பதும், முயல்வதும் தான் முக்கியம்’ என்று தன்னம்பிக்கை விதை துாவுகிறார் கவிஞர்.

இங்ஙனம் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் காலந்தோறும் உடன்பாட்டுச் சிந்தனையின் தாக்கத்தினைக் காண முடிகிறது.

Message for the Day…” Renounce Your bad qualities, and Cultivate adherence to Right Conduct….”

People are engaged in exploring space but do not make the slightest effort to explore the Divine within. Of what use are experiments in space when there is no genuine cultivation of human qualities and the practice of basic virtues such as acting in reverence with the mother, the father and the preceptor? People today are living in human form but are filled with beastly qualities! Scriptures declare that people can attain immortality only by renunciation (tyaga) and not through actions, wealth or progeny. What must be renounced? Renounce your bad qualities. To manifest your inherent divine nature, cultivate love for God and fear of sin and adherence to right conduct (sangha niti). When you fear sin and love God, you cannot indulge in immoral acts, automatically ensuring morality in society. God can be known only by experience and not by experiments. Hence follow your chosen spiritual practices diligently and sincerely.

 

Message for the Day…” Prayers should be Offered again and again to Receive HIS Showers of Grace …”

When people need any convenience or assistance, they approach those in authority and convey their request. So also, in the internal state, when there is no possibility of achieving and acquiring devotion, charity, peace, and truth by normal people, the great and noble, who desire to achieve these, pray to the Lord within themselves. Listening to these prayers, He Himself comes into the world and showers His grace on all people. As an example, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna incarnated answering the prayers of the sages. Similarly Saint Ramakrishna prayed to Goddess Kali to incarnate and establish righteousness(dharma) that would uproot injustice and selfishness. Thus prayers should be offered again and again for the realisation of this noble purpose. No one should become desperate and give up prayers if they don’t result immediately in the advent of the Lord. Since the ancient times, remember that the Lord has always responded to holy and sincere prayers with His Advent.
