WE’RE in the midst of one of aviation’s darkest times.

We have been left shocked and heartbroken time after time again over the past year with a series of unimaginable flight tragedies, the latest seeing 150 people killed on board Germanwings Flight 9525.

So it’s to be expected that we’re all looking for answers, hoping to prevent another tragedy from happening in our skies. And as more and more harrowing information comes to light of the terrifying final moments on board the doomed Germanwings jet, many flyers are on edge at the thought of taking to the skies.

So imagine this pilot’s surprise when a passenger decided to share some kindness in a rather unexpected way.

The pilot, who is unnamed for security reasons, was handed a note from the passenger during a flight from Spain to the south of England on Monday.

Instead of being a complaint or criticism, the glowing note voiced appreciation for the incredible job pilots do, ultimately seeking to inject kindness into a shocked world.

The thrilled pilot shared the note with a colleague, Jai Dillon, who then posted it onto Twitter where it has already been shared thousands of times.

Dillon, a pilot based in the UK who has been flying commercially for the past three years, told news.com.au his co-worker wanted to share the letter that had touched his heart.

“They were incredible happy,” Dillon, 23, said. “I feel that the positive message is worth spreading.”

It’s a good reminder that thousands of pilots and crew get millions of people safely from point A to B every year. To you all, we say thank you.

AN UNEXPECTED passenger tried to board this flight to Sydney this morning …..

Passengers boarding a Virgin plane at Gold Coast Airport were diverted to the rear of the plane when airline workers discovered a snake had scaled its way up the stairs to the front door.

Luckily they didn’t have a hiss-y fit over the surprise visitor.

It just so happened that Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, was one of the passengers boarding the plane and he took to Twitter to announce the breach of security, not the first time a snake has tried to slip its way onto a flight.

“A snake had just slithered up the front steps, so we actually boarded, then, through the back steps,” he told ABC.

“But within five minutes they had come along and a couple of airport guys had brought a bag and a couple of snake catching rods and quickly gathered up the little sucker and put him in the bag, and I guess deposited him out where he belongs.”

“It was probably enjoying the nice warm steel as part of the front stairs and wasn’t quite aware what all the fuss was about really,” he said.

“Now it may have just climbed up there I guess when people were happily boarding the aircraft, but you have to admire how good the airline staff are in terms of rapidly diverting plans, sorting out the snake, replotting the aircraft in terms of when it is going to take off.

“But I dare say the poor little snake didn’t make it to Sydney.”

Airports’ Three Letter Nick Names…!!!….Story Behind the Codes…!!!

When booking flights online, knowing your local airport’s code can come in handy.

There’s 3,000 miles’ difference between BUR (Burbank, California) and BTV (Burlington, Vermont). And you probably don’t want to end up in Venezuela just in time for Oktoberfest (Munich’s code is MUC, not MUN).

Those enigmatic three-letter signifiers that help you search for flights on Kayak or Priceline are doled out by the

International  Transport Association, and distinguish airports from one another. But the average traveler may not know where those letters come from.

Arizona-based designer Lynn Fisher, who travels a lot and loves trivia, became interested in the rationale behind those IATA codes a few years ago but couldn’t find one place online that explained them all. She and developer Nick Crohn decided to create a website that did just that.

The result, airportcod.es, pairs a “unique aspect of each airport, whether it be architecture, art, or a great view,” with its three-letter code and the origin story behind it. Some, like Fisher and Crohn’s local airport, PHX, are straightforward; others are more obscure or random.

Visit their website to browse codes from more than 200 airports around the world. Here’s a sample:

Stockholm’s airport is named ARlaNda, a made-up word combining Arland, another name for the nearby parish of Ärlinghundra, and landa, the Swedish verb meaning “to land.”

Germanwings Flight Crash… Is A 320 Still a Safer Aircraft …?

IT IS technologically advanced and used by major airlines across the globe with one taking off on average every two seconds.

However, despite two major crashes involving an A320 in the space of just three months, the jet remains one of the world’s safest.

That’s the view of leading aviation expert Neil Hansford who told news.com.au that the plane was so technologically advanced it practically flew itself.

The chairman of Strategic Aviation Solutions, with more than 30 years experience in the industry, said if there was a major design fault in the plane the world would have known about it before now.

His comments comes in the wake of Germanwings Flight 4U9525, which crashed on a remote mountain range in the French alps overnight.

Germanwings Flight 4U9525 was travelling from Barcelona, Spain, to Dusseldorf, Germany, when at approximately 10.30am local time on Tuesday, the plane lost radio contact.

The flight was just 46 minutes in when trouble struck, plummeting 31,200 feet in 8 minutes.

It is the second major crash involving an A320 in just three months.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crashed into the Java Sea in stormy weather on December 28 during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

In 30 seconds, it rose from 32,000 feet to 37,400 feet, then dipped to 32,000 feet, before descending for around three minutes.

The plane’s stall alarms were going off for four minutes before the crash.

In both cases Mr Hansford said he didn’t believe it was a fault of the plane itself which caused them to crash and added investigators couldn’t rule anything out.

“An A320 takes off every two seconds around the world,” Mr Hansford said,.

“The A320 is a sophisticated aircraft which is not flown in the traditional way in that the computer flies the aircraft, the pilot operates the computer.”

Mr Hansford maintained despite the two crashes, the plane remained one of the world’s safest and it was just sheer coincidence and force of numbers that two crashes had taken place in as many months.

He still believed the A320 was the trump aircraft as evidenced by the sheer numbers of them flying popular flight routes including between Paris and London and Sydney to Melbourne.

Mr Hansford said the plane’s hi-tech systems meant if there was a fault in the plane, or if an engine had failed, the pilot would have had time to save it.

He also said the black box would reveal further details which would come to light sooner than in recent crashes including the Air Asia and Malaysian crashes last year.

“Unlike Malaysian and Indonesian authorities however, the French and German authorities and their carriers will be more transparent,” he said speaking of the retrieval of the black box and the release of information.

THE A320:

Regarded as a workhorse of modern aviation, similar to the Boeing 737, there are more than 3600 of them in operation worldwide, according to Airbus, which also makes nearly identical versions of the plane, the smaller A318 and A319 and the stretched A321. An additional 2500 of those jets are flying, according to AFP.

The A320 family has a good safety record, with just 0.14 fatal accidents per million takeoffs, according to a Boeing safety analysis.

This particular jet was delivered to Lufthansa — the parent company of Germanwings — in 1991 and had about 58,300 flight hours over 46,700 flights.

The airline is the budget offshoot of major carrier Lufthansa, and this is the first deadly incident in its 13-year history.

This A320 had also passed its last routine check on Monday and its captain had more than 10 years flying experience, Sky News reported.

Airbus is investigating whether a mechanical fault is to blame, however this particular Airbus A320 of Germanwings underwent full maintenance in 2013, according to the head of the company Thomas Winkelmann.

“But we cannot rule out a structural issue: a failure of a part of the structure caused by an absence of detailed maintenance or the wear of a particular element that will become apparent after tens of thousands of flight hours,” the former investigator said.

“In the history of aviation, it’s only when accidents occur that we are able to detect unforeseen weaknesses on parts of a plane where maintenance procedures were not thought necessary.”

LOW COST, LOW SAFETY?:

Xavier Tytelman, an air safety specialist told AFP while this particular plane was 24 years old, that didn’t necessarily mean it was less safe than newer planes.

While new aircraft are more efficient which gave airlines who use them a major cost advantage as fuel can account for a quarter to half of operating costs, it didn’t mean they couldn’t be used by budget carriers.

According to him, new planes can also mean lower maintenance costs. Each four or five years passenger jets require an extensive overhaul, which is both costly in itself and requires taking the plane out of service for weeks.

“Low-cost airlines don’t have any incentive to invest in such maintenance and just before planes arrive at that age they sell them,” Mr Tytelman told AFP.

However the Germanwings A320, was probably in its final years of commercial service and pulling old planes out of service wasn’t an issue of safety but rather economics.

“Low cost, that means less comfort, but not less safety,” Mr Tytelman said.

‘EASY TO BLAME A DEAD MAN’:

Another international aviation expert Arthur Wolk told 3AW Breakfast that the cause of the crash would be determined really quickly.

“If there was not foul play, and that will be determined pretty quickly, it looks like another example of the angle of attack sensors being iced over,” he told the program.

He speculated that “angle attack sensors” at the front of the aircraft may have “iced over”, causing the plane to “pretty much go straight down”, which was the same problem that contributed to the 2009 Air France crash.

“It’s easy to blame a dead man … but this is a problem even the best pilots can’t handle,” he told the radio program.

More than seven million people travelled on the busiest flight route in the world in 2013 – but the two cities may surprise you.

It wasn’t the short hop between the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro or the two-hour journey between Beijing and Shanghai in China.

Surprisingly, it was the 90-minute trek from Sapporo to Tokyo in Japan.

Data prepared by FightStats for The Huffington Post shows that 7.4 million passengers travelled from Sapporo to Tokyo on 29,858 flights last year.

The return leg is the world’s second busiest route, transporting 7.3 million passengers on 29,484 flights.

Tokyo has the world’s most populous metropolitan area with more than 35 million residents, while Sapporo, in comparison, is home to just two million people.

An online search displays dozens of daily flights from Sapporo to Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports, departing every five to 30 minutes on a number of carriers.

FlightStats says more than 8.3 million people take to the skies every day on more than 93,000 flights.

The third busiest route in the world in 2013 was Seoul to Jeju in South Korea, while the return flight was the fourth busiest.

Almost seven million people flew each way on about 37,000 flights in 2013.

The Sao Paulo-Rio de Janeiro route rounds out the top five with just over six million travellers. The return flight is the sixth busiest flight.

Six of the world’s 10 busiest routes are in Asia, while the others are located in Brazil and Australia.

Sydney to Melbourne and the return leg are the ninth and 10th busiest routes.

Tokyo was by far the busiest city for airport travel, claiming four spots. The routes between Tokyo and Fukuoka also cracked the list.

No cities in Europe or North America made the top 10.

The website FlightAware compiled a list of the busiest routes on a single day, using July 30, 2014 as an example.

On that day, the busiest route in the world saw 94 flights travel from Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport to Jeju International Airport.

The busiest route in the US on July 30, 2014 was Los Angeles to San Francisco with a total of 55 flights.

Indian airports hold the top six positions in the listing of largest facilities for air travel within and from South Asia, highlighting the key role new entrants into the local market and infrastructure growth at airports in the country will have on the future of aviation in this region.

The big metropolis hubs of Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai lead the way with 16.8 per cent and 15.3 per cent shares of capacity within and from South Asia in 2014, respectively. With a faster rate of growth Delhi’s gateway has strengthened its prominence in the region with its share of available seats rising 0.3 percentage points between 2013 and 2014 following a 9.0 per cent rise in departure capacity.

The Indian airports hold seven of the top ten largest airports in South Asia with Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore (6.2 per cent share); Chennai International Airport (6.1 per cent share); Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata (4.9 per cent share); Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad (4.5 per cent share) and Cochin International Airport (2.6 per cent share), the others.

The largest non-Indian airport in South Asia by departure capacity in 2014 was Bandaranaike International Airport, serving the Sri Lankan capital city of Colombo, which was ranked seventh with a 3.3 per cent share. The other non-Indian airports in the top ten were: Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh (2.8 per cent share) and Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan (2.6 per cent share).

Fastest Growing Airports in the South Asian Market (2010-2014)

Looking at capacity data in the region across a five year period, it is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in the Indian city of Hyderabad that has grown by the biggest margin with capacity up 68.6 per cent from 2010. The modern facility was opened in March 2008 as a replacement for the city’s former airport at Begumpet and is viewed upon as one of the most efficient facilities across the Asian market, regularly appearing highly in customer surveys.

The performance at Hyderabad over the last five years only just exceeded that of two other Indian airports. Pune Airport grew capacity 65.9 per cent between 2010 and 2014, while at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport departure seats increased 60.6 per cent, despite capacity falling last year.

Outside of the dominant Indian market, Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, the main international airport in the Maldives, was the fastest growing airport in South Asia with departure capacity up 56.4 per cent over the past five years. Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka also saw a notable 45.3 per cent capacity rise between 2010 and 2014, highlighting its emergence as a regional hub for the oneworld alliance and resurgence of tourism to the country.

” Flying into Failure…Airlines that no longer exist…”

THEY are the hugely powerful and glamorous airlines that soared into the hearts of the public only to be plunged into despair and grounded forever.

So what went so horribly wrong

We take a look at five of the most famous cases of carriers that suffered devastating demises and find that financial woes and horrifying plane crashes were among the factors that had a hand in their undoing.

1. Ansett

Founded in 1935, Ansett was Australia’s second-largest airline and ran for more than 65 years. It carried more than 14 million passengers a year and had an annual turnover of more than $3 billion by the time it was placed into administration in 2001.

Unfortunately, Ansett became the nation’s most high-profile aviation failure, and one of the largest corporate collapses ever.

In fact, it was bleeding a massive $1.3 million a day, according to its parent company Air New Zealand. The airline’s collapse left about 15,000 people out of work and out of pocket to the tune of $758 million in lost entitlements. Most were eventually paid back, but there were many dark days.

“The Ansett collapse produced enormous pain and hardship to thousands of Australian families,” Mark Korda from administrators KordaMentha told the Herald Sun.

KordaMentha stated that: “After a decade of commitment, we effectively completed the administration on 2 September, 2011 … The final dividend paid to former Ansett employees achieved an overall average return of 96 cents in the dollar — a result that surpassed initial stakeholder expectations during the time of the collapse.”

It was such a desperate time that, in an effort to reimburse the workers, the Federal Government imposed a $10 “Ansett levy” on all plane tickets to raise money.

Tragically, at least 40 Ansett employees committed suicide following its demise, The Australian reported.

2. Air Australia

Unfortunately, Ansett isn’t the only Australian airline to fold in a dramatic fashion. About 4000 passengers were left stranded in 2012 when Air Australia went bustseemingly out of the blue, suddenly grounding flights around its network.

It had pushed itself to the financial brink, literally running out of money to buy fuel.

The Brisbane-based carrier failed with debts of up to $90 million and was liquidated. Up until a few hours before administrators KordaMentha were appointed, tickets were still being sold online. The airline ended up making $36 million from about 100,000 tickets for future travel, which became worthless.

Air Australia is one airline that failed.

Formerly known as Strategic Airlines, the carrier started domestic flights in 2009 before expanding to overseas destinations such as Bali.

3. Pan American World Airways (Pan Am)

One of the world’s most famous airlines, Pan Am was the largest international air carrier in the US for nearly 70 years (1927-91). It was also one of the most innovative, and was a founding member of the global aviation authority, the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

It was a hugely popular airline, bringing glamour to the skies during the good old days of aviation. However, by the 1970s it struggled with major increases in worldwide fuel prices, declining travel, deregulation and an increasing number of competitors.

Then, there was a devastating plane crash that shook the world.

According to the The Pan Am Historical Foundation: “The magic era ended with the passing on of Juan Trippe in 1981, and a succession of managements were unable to regain profitability. The rapid rise of world terrorism, culminating in the tragedy of Lockerbie, was the final deathblow.”

Pan Am flight 103 from London to New York was destroyed by a bomb in its hold on December 21, 1988, while flying over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. All 243 passengers and 16 crew were killed, as well as 11 people on the ground, making it the deadliest act of terrorism in the UK.

The Pan Am Historical Foundation states: “All the treasures had been sold, many at bargain-basement prices, yet the deficits remained. The end came on 4 December, 1991. The airline of many firsts, a world leader in technology and innovations, was gone, mourned by many across a world that will not see its like again.”

4. Swissair

For years, the national airline of Switzerland seemed unbreakable. Founded in 1931, it flew from profit to profit, becoming known as the “Flying Bank” because it was so financially stable and had a reputation for great service.

Throughout the 1980s the airline continued to thrive, and was one of the major carriers in western Europe. But it didn’t last.

A disastrous overexpansion program and an unstable economic environment hit the airline hard. By 2001, it was in dire straits. With its entire fleet grounded it was only kept alive by the government. After months of chaos and injections of millions of dollars, it was closed down the following year in a move that shocked the country.

Most of its planes and routes were taken over by a new airline, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS).

5. Trans World Airways (TWA)

One of Pan Am’s main rivals, the US airline TWA also has a long — and mostly glamorous — history spanning 71 years.

In its early days, it flourished under billionaire Howard Hughes and was always on the cutting-edge of aviation technology, USA Today reports. However, poor management in the 1980s hurt the airline, which eventually suffered huge losses.

The situation was worsened by the fact that nobody would lend the airline money with Hughes at the helm.

“We were subject to very stiff interest penalties as a result of Hughes’ involvement,” Jerry Cosley, who held several executive and staff positions with TWA from 1960 to 1985, told the St. Louis Magazine. “He was a genius in many aspects of aviation, but he maintained a very spotty record of financial achievement.”

It faced bankruptcy in 1960, and Hughes gave up control. Things seemed to be OK for a while, until deregulation hit the industry and in the years following, some of its most prized routes were sold off. By 1992 it declared bankruptcy — and again in 1995.

Then, disaster struck. In 1996, flight TWA 800 exploded and crashed just minutes after taking off from John F Kennedy Airport, killing all 230 people aboard.

The crash shook the world, and despite it being years ago, there’s still a hunt for answers as to what really happened, with investigators believing it may have been caused by a missile strike.

Five years after the crash, the airline had been sold to American Airlines.

Hong Kong’s Third Runway Backed by IATA and Cathay Pacific….

The HK$150 billion project has been backed by both Hong Kong flag carrier  Cathay Pacific, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), with the interpretation that a third runway is necessary in order to see the aviation industry in Hong Kong flourish.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is set to begin the construction of a third runway and associated infrastructure.

The HK$150 billion project has been backed by both Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), with the interpretation that a third runway is necessary in order to see the aviation industry in Hong Kong flourish.

Construction on the third runway is expected to commence next year, to be completed by 2023, and will help Hong Kong International Airport boost capacity to 100 million passengers and 9 million tons of cargo a year by 2030.

IATA have said that HKIA plays a crucial role as an economic catalyst – Hong Kong is home to some 3,500 regional headquarters and boasts a HK$250 billion tourism industry. The airport serves 63 million passengers and processes 4.4 million tonnes of cargo.

“IATA has long been an advocate of the need for a third runway in Hong Kong. And it is in the interest of everyone in Hong Kong to see the aviation industry flourish. Aviation and aviation-related tourism account for 8.2% of the Hong Kong economy. Increasing HKIA’s capacity to be able to serve 100 million passengers and 9 million tonnes of cargo by 2030 will ensure that the airport continues to be a pillar of Hong Kong’s success—provided the expansion is built, financed  and funded wisely,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO in a speech to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Hong Kong.

IATA has outlined a framework which will allow Hong Kong’s new infrastructure to be built without increasing airline charges, without placing a burden on taxpayers, without making it more expensive for travellers, without adding an extra burden to shippers and while increasing competitiveness of the hub’s air transport network.

HKIA is consistently profitable, and IATA’s Tony Tyler has suggested the airport use its advantageous financial situation to fund its expansion by borrowing through commercial loans or bonds.

Flag carrier, Cathay Pacific has supported IATA’s suggestions to fund the project by saying that the third runway can be self-funded through existing income streams, especially as the number of passengers moving through the airport continues to grow.

“Hong Kong International Airport is extremely successful. It is the world’s busiest airport for international freight and the third busiest in terms of international passenger traffic. The Airport Authority enjoys the highest net profit of any airport in the world and benefits from strong cash flows, a healthy balance sheet, and growing income from retail and aeronautical streams,” said Ivan Chu, Cathay Pacific Chief Executive.

Cathay Pacific also believes that, as a public body, the Airport Authority should reinvest its income in the development of the third runway, so that the airport can maintain its premier hub status and continue to make an important economic contribution to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s air transport network is under pressure to remain competitive, after its share of the market connecting China to the rest of the world shrank from 20 percent to 17 percent between 2005 and 2013.

Its share on the ASEAN to North America market has remained at 10 percent, whereas the airport’s share on ASEAN to European traffic has contracted to 2.4 percent from 3.3 during the same period.

“There are lots of reasons why these changes are happening. The Middle East airlines are proving to be strong competitors with efficient and affordable hubs being a central piece of their success. And hubs closer to Hong Kong continue to improve their offerings to enhance the competitiveness of their networks,” said Mr Tyler.

A Qantas jumbo jet has made history by landing at a regional airport in New South Wales to become the first 747-400 in the world to go on display.

The aircraft which is known as ‘The City of Canberra’ was cheered and applauded by a crowd of thousands as it made a tricky landing on the short and narrow runway.

Illawarra Airport’s runway, which is only 1,800 metres, is less than half the length of Sydney Airport’s runways and at just 30 metres wide, the aircraft’s wingspan of 64 metres caused the two engines to hang over the runway’s edge on landing.

The aircraft was retired to Wollongong after 25 years of service, where it will become a prized addition to the aviation museum based at Illawara Regional Airport.

Qantas’ final 747 flight departed Sydney Airport last weekend, and flew at just 4,000 feet and at a much slower speed for its 15 minute journey to Wollongong.

The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society who will be looking after the jumbo jet has Australia’s biggest collection of historical aircraft including a plane known as ‘Connie’, a Lockheed Super Constellation originally built for the US Air Force.

“It’s a bit sentimental but it’s going to a great home down here and we know it’s going to be looked after by the society volunteers,” Captain Greg Matthews said.

The City of Canberra is the oldest aircraft in the Qantas fleet and holds the record for the longest ever non-stop commercial flight for its trip from London to Sydney in 1989.

In total, the plane has flow 85 million kilometres, which is equivalent to 110 return trips to the moon. Its last commercial flight was in January this year between Johannesburg and Sydney.

A ‘ghost airport’ that opened four years ago in Castellon, Spain is finally set to begin operations after Irish LCC, Ryanair announced scheduled flights to the UK.

Flights will link the €150 million airport to London Stansted three-times-weekly and Bristol twice-weekly from September this year.

Castellon-Costa Azahar Airport became one of Spain’s white elephant airports, after it opened in March 2011 and was one of the Valencia region’s many grand building projects. The city region is already served by Valencia Airport, and nearby airports Reus and Alicante both also serve similar markets.

Until recently, Castellon has only hosted charter flights carrying teams from the Spanish football league, and flights from the region’s general aviation flying club.

The airport has faced a multitude of problems which have contributed to the airport lying dormant for the past four years. In 2012, part of the runway had to be demolished due to an error of measurement, and in 2013 the airport received more backlash after it was revealed it had no provisions to fuel planes, as fuel stations had not yet been built.

Ryanair announced its plans to fly to Castellon in its latest press release which highlighted the airline’s London Stansted winter schedule.

“Ryanair is pleased to launch our biggest ever London Stansted winter 2015 schedule, with two new routes to Castellón and Ponta Delgada—110 in total—and more flights on 23 routes, which will deliver over 18 million customers p.a. and support 18,000 on site jobs at London Stansted Airport,” said Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs.

Ryanair will start selling the flights on Friday (13MAR15), and it said it has the capacity to bring 60,000 passengers a year to Castellon.

Castellon is the 24th airport in Spain to carry Ryanair flights, and the Irish budget airline handled nearly 32 million passengers in Spain in 2014.
