Sri Valli-Teyvanai Samedha Murugan March 20, 1968: It was a dark day indeed for the priest at the Ratnagiri Hill Temple, located between Vellore and Arcot about a hundred miles from Chennai. Three months had gone by since he was last paid, and his patience was running out. “How much longer must this go on?” he thought to himself. He was in a particularly sour mood this morning and decided to not perform his obligatory daily worship service in the main shrine of the temple.

About this time, Satchidanandam–a 27-year-old clerk–strolled into the temple for his usual morning worship. When he saw the condition of the main shrine, he was shocked. Not only were the lamps and incense not lit, but also fresh flowers and sacraments had not been gathered and prepared. Nor had the puja implements been cleaned and set out.

“Where is the priest?” he thought to himself. “Why is he not performing the morning puja?” Satchidanandam could not help feeling a special concern for the welfare of this particular temple. His father, Kandaswami Mudaliar, had initiated the construction of the 156 steps leading up to its entrance in 1936 and orchestrated its kumbhabhishekam (major consecration) in 1938.

Although young Satchidanandam was discouraged by what he saw, he still circumambulated the shrine and stood before the Deity to pray. As he began to commune with the shakti that he felt emerging from within the shrine, he fell into a swoon. The experience took him by surprise.

Nothing like this had ever happened to him before. As he leaned against a pillar for support, his body quivered with bliss as his head filled with a golden light. Just as he was about to merge into a sea of oneness, Lord Muruga appeared before him in His etherial body. Although the presence of this legendary God was powerful, He vanished almost as soon as he appeared–like a bolt of lightening.

Slowly, young Satchidanandam settled back into a calm and peaceful physical consciousness. He knew it would take some time to fully digest what had just happened. For now, however, he was aware only of a mighty determination to restore this neglected temple to the state of its original elegance and beauty. At that very moment, the transformed young man took a vow to never leave the Ratnagiri Hill Temple until it had been fully renovated.

Thus began the work that was to be his life’s mission. The residents of the nearby village of Kilminnal stopped calling the young man “Satchidanandam.” Instead, they referred to him as Balamurugan Adimai–or just “Swamiji ” for short.

In the 36 years that have passed since the clerk-turned-holy-man took his vow to do this work, he has not left the temple precincts even once, and his life has been one of exemplary simplicity and austerity. Aside from worshiping and meditating three times daily–at 4:30 in the morning, 12 noon and six in the evening–he remains fully available as a servant of the God that appeared before him during his one unforgettable life-changing experience. Most of his time is spent fully immersed in the supervision of temple construction and the hosting of guests. At 9:00 pm he retires to his room for meditation and sleep. His few personal needs are easily met.

Swamiji is an expert in working with people. He takes special care to become knowledgeable in every aspect of temple construction so that, whether he is talking with sthapatis about stone work or silversmiths about metal crafting, he can negotiate knowledgeably on even the smallest details of their work. He even becomes actively involved with the supervision of photographers and journalists who come regularly to publicize the progress of the on-going renovation.

The neglected Ratnagiri Hill Temple, for which songs were composed and sung by Saint Arunagirinathar in the 14th century, was originally only 200 square feet in size. Today, due to the inspiration and hard work of Balamurugan and the people who help him, it covers more than 30,000 square feet.

Over time Swamiji has also become a spiritual guide and social leader for the residents of Kilminnal. Besides catalyzing their mystical and religious inclinations, he also provides assistance of a more practical sort. So far, he has built a school, a hospital and a number of roads; and provided much-needed water to the area by digging wells and constructing massive tanks for water storage.

It’s no wonder the local people love him and gladly volunteer their time and energy to lift large, heavy granite stones to the hilltop for the temple construction. In 1987, Swamiji began building his school for the youth of the surrounding rural areas by first constructing the Ratnagiri Nursery, which

opened with two teachers and 18 students. Through the years that followed, he constructed additional buildings to provide classroom and library space for education in a variety of fields including math, science, language, literature and computer science.

Today, Swamiji’s school campus includes ample kitchen and bathroom facilities, a large conference hall, several libraries and 24 classrooms. It employs 43 teachers and 12 staff members and provides education for 900 students. The hospital, which Swamiji began constructing in 1988, now has 26 staff members and makes medicine available at subsidized rates to local residents. Monthly eye camps sponsored by the hospital provide poor villagers with cataract operations, free of charge. Medical specialists from Chennai visit every Sunday. The Accident Relief Center, aided by State Government and run by the hospital, provides a fully equipped mobile van–the first of its kind in the Vellore district–for emergency outcalls.

The future of Kilminnal and the Ratnagiri Hill Temple look bright as long as 64-year-old Balamurugan Adimai is around. Although one might assume that the continued improvement, maintenance and management of the temple, school and hospital facilities that have already been created might constitute a full-time job, such might not be the case for the ever-vibrant Balamurugan.

If the past provides any indication of what the future might bring–which usually it does–there should be good reason to assume that more dynamic creativity can be expected from Balamur ugan Adimai.

1968: Satchidanandam enjoys a vision of Lord Muruga. Local villagers name him “Balamurugan.”
1970: Balamurugan begins his service. A well is dug for the temple and nearby village of Kilminnal. The main Ratnagiri mandapam (worship hall) and an entrance Ganesha shrine and mandapam at the base of Ratnagiri Hill are constructed.
1973: Two more temple mandapams and a large marriage hall are built. Six staff buildings and eight guest cottages are also constructed.
1974: An ornate temple entry arch is erected, and electricity is installed to provide night lighting for the temple.
1975: A five-story rajagopuram (main temple tower) is completed. Two 8,000-liter water tanks are installed for use by local residents. A large dining hall and kitchen are built.
1978: A post office and police station for Kilminnal are constructed. Ten staff buildings and four guest cottages are added to the temple.
1988: The long-term construction of a school for local youth begins. A 25-bed hospital is completed.
2003: A separate building for computer training is constructed for the school. Science and library annexes are also added.

‘மாதா பிதா குரு தெய்வம்’ என்பது நமது முன்னோர் வாக்கு! தாய், தந்தை, குரு இவர்களுக்குப் பின்னர்தான் தெய்வம் என்று இதற்கு ஒரு விளக்கம் உண்டு. ‘தாய், தந்தை, குரு இவர்களே நம் கண் முன்னால் நடமாடும் தெய்வங்கள்’ என்றும் ஒரு விளக்கம் வழக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. இன்று பல்வேறு துறைகளிலும் சாதனை படைத்த அத்தனை மனிதர்களுக்கும் வாழ்க்கையில் நல்ல ஆசான்கள் அமைந்து தன்னலம் கருதாது மாணவ சமுதாயத்தின் முன்னேற்றம் ஒன்றை மட்டுமே கருத்தில் கொண்டு அதற்காகவே தனது வாழ் நாள் முழுவதையும் அர்ப்பணித்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறுகளிலிருந்து அறிய முடிகிறது. அப்துல்கலாம், அம்பேத்கர் ஆகியோரது வாழ்க்கையில் ஆசிரியர்களின் பணி மகத்தானது. தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட குலத்தில் பிறந்த அம்பேத்கரை அவரைச் சுற்றியிருந்த சமுதாயம் வெறுத்து ஒதுக்கியபோது ‘அம்பேத்கர்’ என்ற பிராமண குலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த அவரது ஆசிரியர் பீமாராவ் என்ற பெயர் கொண்ட அந்த சிறுவனின் மீது அன்பும், அக்கறையும் கொண்டு அரவணைத்து தனது இல்லத்திலேயே தங்கவைத்து உணவும் உடையும் அளித்து படிக்கவும் வைத்தார். தனக்கு ஆதரவு அளித்த ஆசிரியரின் பால் மரியாதை கொண்டு அவரது பெயரும், நினைவும் தனது மனதில் நிரந்தரமாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்ற நந்றியுணர்வுடன் தனது பெயருடன் ஆசிரியரின் பெயரையும் இணைத்து ‘பீமாராவ் அம்பேத்கர்’ என்று பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்து கொண்டார். ஆசிரியர்களின் பெருமையை உணர்த்த இதை விட சிறந்த உதாரணம் தேவையா?

இன்று நம்மிடையே இருக்கும் பல்வேறு துறைகளிலும் முத்திரை பதித்த வித்தகர்களின் வாழ்வில் ஆசிரியர்களின் பங்கினை அவர்களிடமே நேர்காணல் மூலமாக அறியும் முயற்சியே இந்தத் தொடர்!

இலக்கியம், சங்கீதம், கலைகள், வியாபாரம் இப்படி அனைத்துத் துறைகளிலும் சிறந்து விளங்கும் பெருமக்களிடமும் நமது நேர்காணல் தொடரும்.
முதலாவதாக கர்நாடக சங்கீத்தில் சாதனை படைத்து வரும் திரு நெய்வேலி சந்தான கோபாலன்! சங்கீதத்தில் பெரிய அளவு பின்னணி இல்லாத குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்து கர் நாடக சங்கீதத்தின்பால் இயல்பான ஆர்வம் கொண்டு அதைக் கற்பதற்காக தான் எடுத்த முயற்சிகளையும், தனக்கு அமைந்த ஆசிரியர் பெருமக்களையும் நன்றியுடன் நினைவு கூர்ந்த நெய்வேலி சந்தான கோபாலன் தனது குருகுல வாசத்துக்கே சந்தோஷ மான தொரு ‘பிளாஷ்பேக்’ சென்றார்.

பள்ளிக்கால அனுபவங்கள் பற்றி சொல்லுங்கள்?
முதலில் நாம் காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரின் திருவுருவை மனதில் தியானித்து அவரது பாத மலர்களைத் தொழுது நமது நேர்காணலை தொடங்குவோம்! அவர் எங்கள் குடும்ப சொத்து! எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் முதல் குரு அவர்தான்! (இவரது இல்லத்தின் பெயரே ‘பெரியவா பிச்சை!) அவர் ஜகத்குரு! நான் சிறியன்! ஆசிரியர்களின் ஆசிகளால் நான் இன்று ஓரளவுக்கு சங்கீதத்தில் வளர்ந்திருக்கிறேன் என்பதுதான் உண்மை! குரு இல்லாத வித்தை பாழ் என்று சொல்வார்கள். தான் தோன்றி பெருமான் என்று சிவனைச் சொல்வார்கள். சிவனுக்கு மட்டும்தான் அந்தப் பெருமை உண்டு. நம் எல்லோருக்கும் குரு தேவை! எழுத்தறிவித்தவன் இறைவனாவான்! ஆக குருமார்கள் நாம் தெய்வங்களாகக் கருதத்தக்கவர்கள்! நான் வாழ்ந்தது நெய்வேலியில்! தண்ணீருக்குப் பஞ்சமில்லை. எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் பச்சை பசேல்! படித்தது நெய்வேலி லிக்னைட் கார்ப்பொரேஷன் பள்ளி! அருமையான பள்ளி. ஆசிரியப் பெருமக்கள் அனைவருமே நினைந்து போற்றத்தக்கவர்கள்! சங்கரன் என்று ஒரு ஆசிரியர். அவர் வந்து வகுப்பில் நின்றார் என்றால் சூரியன் வந்து நின்றது போல இருக்கும். அத்தனை தேஜஸ்! இவர் தவிர , சிங்காரம்பிள்ளை, ஆளவந்தார், சோழன் ஆகியோர் தமிழ் ஆசிரியர்கள். நடராஜன் என்ற தனது இயற்பெயரை தமிழின்பால் உள்ள காதலால் ‘சோழன்’ என்று மாற்றி வைத்துக்கொண்டார். இவர் பாடங்களையும், பாடல்களையும் சங்கீதமாகவே இசைப்பார். மோகன ராகம் அவருக்கு மிகவும் கைவந்த ராகம்! அவருக்கு ராக லட்சணங்கள் தெரியுமா என்று எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் அவர் பாடினால் அது தேனாய் இனிக்கும். ஆசிரியப்பா, வெண்பாவில் புலி! அந்த காலத்தில் தலைமை ஆசிரியர்தவிர மற்ற அத்தனை பேர்களும் சைக்கிளில்தான் வருவார்கள். புலவர் சோழன் சைக்கிளில் வரும்போதும் இலக்கியம் சார்ந்த பாடல்களை சங்கீதமாய் பாடிக்கொண்டே வருவார். வயிற்றுப் பிழைப்புக்காக தமிழ் ஆசிரியராக இல்லாமல் தமிழுக்காகவே வாழ்ந்தவர். மறக்கமுடியாத மாமனிதர் அவர்! இனொரு ஆசிரியர் கொஞ்ச காலம் மட்டும் எங்கள் பள்ளியில் இருந்தார். அவர் எல்லாப் பாடல்களுக்கும் சோகமயமான ராகங்களையே இசைப்பார். இருந்தாலும் அந்த ராகம் அவரது குரலுக்கு அவ்வளவு இனிமையாக இருக்கும். நான் அதைத் திரும்பத்திரும்பப்பாடி ‘மாயாமாளவ கௌள’ ராகம் என கண்டுபிடித்தேன். பேச்சுப்போட்டி, கட்டுரைப் போட்டி, கவிதைப் போட்டி இப்படிப் பல நடக்கும். எனக்கு இயல்பாகவே தமிழில் ஆர்வம் இருந்தது. நான் எழுதிய கவிதை ஒன்றுக்குப் பரிசு கிடைத்தபோது புலவர் சோழன் அந்தக் கவிதையை அழகாகப் படித்து ரசித்து விளக்கம் சொல்லி மாணவர்களிடம் கைதட்டல் பெறவைத்து கோப்பையை எனக்களித்தார். நினைவில் நின்ற சம்பவம் இது! இன்னொரு ஆசிரியர் செந்தமிழில்தான் பேசுவார். நடன சபேசன் என்றொரு ஆசிரியர் தங்கபட்டனை சட்டையில் அணிந்திருப்பார். அதனால் அவரது பெயரே ‘தங்க பட்டன்’ என்றாகிவிட்டது. தானே துவைத்து வெள்ளை வெளேர் என்று தும்பைப் பூவாய் ஆடை அணிந்து வருவார். ஆளவந்தார் என்ற் ஆசிரியர் மாணவர்களையே படிக்கவைப்பார். தவறு செய்தால் சட்டென்று நிறுத்தி விளக்கம் கொடுப்பார். தமிழில் எனக்கேற்பட்ட ஆர்வத்துக்கு இந்த ஆசிரியப்பெருமக்களே காரணம்! மாவட்ட அளவில் நடக்கும் கவிதை மற்றும் இசைப்போட்டிகளில் பங்கு கொண்டு பல பரிசுகள் பெற்றிருக்கிறேன். ஒரே ஒரு முறை சென்னைக்கும் வந்திருக்கிறேன். பள்ளிக்காலத்தில் போட்டிகளில் வெற்றி பெற்ற மாணவர்களுக்குப் பரிசாக அப்போதெல்லாம் சோவியத் நாட்டிலிருந்து வெளிவரும் வண்ண வண்ண சித்திரைக் கதைப் புத்தகங்களைப் பரிசாகத் தருவார்கள். அவற்றைப் பார்க்கும்போது ஒரு புதிய விந்தை உலகத்துக்குப் போய்விட்டார்ப்போலத் தோன்றும். அந்தப் புத்தகங்களின் வாசனை கூட நினைவிருக்கிறது. மு.மு.இஸ்மாயில் எழுதிய கம்பனைப் பற்றிய புத்தகங்கள், சித்பவானந்தர், சிவானந்தர் இவர்களின் நூல்கள் ஆன்மீக உலகின் கதவைத் திறந்து விட்டன. ப்ளஸ் டூ படிக்கும்போது எங்கள் ஊரில் நாற்சந்தியில் வாழைப்பழம் விற்கும் நண்பர்- அவரைப் புலவர் என்றழைப்போம். – பழைய ஆனந்தவிகடன், கலைமகள் போன்ற புத்தகங்களைப் பைண்ட் செய்து வைத்திருப்பார். அவர் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாகப் படிக்கத்தருவார். தினமும் அங்கு சென்று அவருடன் உரையாடி புத்தகங்கள் படிப்பேன். மகாகவி பாரதி, கி.வா.ஜ. ஆர்.சூடாமணி, ல.ச.ரா, கல்கி, சாண்டில்யன், சுஜாதா இவர்களைப் படிக்கும் வாய்ப்பும் கிடைத்தது. அதிலும் பாரதி பைத்தியமாகவே ஆகிவிட்டேன். சென்ற ஆண்டு ராமாயணத்தில் கிஷ்கிந்தா காண்டம் முழுவதையும் பாடல்களாக இயற்றி இசையமைக்கும் வாய்ப்பு எனக்குக் கிடைத்தது. அவற்றை அனிதா குகாவின் குழுவினர் நாட்டிய நாடகமாக்கினார்கள். நல்ல வரவேற்பையும் பெற்றது. அரங்கில் என்னைப் பாராட்டியபோது என்னுடைய தமிழ் ஆசிரியர்களை மானசீகமாக நினைத்துக் கொண்டேன். இந்த ஆண்டு மகாபாரதத்தில் வனபவர்வத்தை பாடல்களாக இயற்றிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். அமெரிக்காவில் க்ளீவ்லேண்டில் அரங்கேறப்போகிறது.

இசையின்பால் ஆர்வம் ஏற்பட்டது எப்படி?
பள்ளிக்காலத்தில் ஒரு பட்டி மன்றம் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்னால் ‘வெள்ளைத் தாமரைப் பூவில் இருப்பாள்’ என்ற பாரதியின் பாட்டைப் பாடினேன். அதுவே எனது ஆரம்பம்! புலவர் சோழன் என்னைப் பாராட்டிப் பேச அனைத்து பேச்சாளர்களும் என்னைப் பாராட்டியபிறகுதான் தங்களது உரையைத் தொடங்கினார்கள். எனக்கு இசையின்பால் ஆர்வம் ஏற்படுத்தி தன்னம்பிக்கையை ஏற்படுத்திய ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி அது! ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் இலங்கைக்குச் சென்றிருந்தபோது கம்ப வாரிதி ஜெயராஜ் அவர்களின் நட்பு கிடைத்தது. எனது சங்கீதத்தை அவர் சிலாகித்துப் பேசியபோது இத்துறையின் நான் மேலும்பொறுப்போடு செயல்படவேண்டும் என்று முடிவு செய்தேன். அப்போதெல்லாம் வானொலியில் இசை கற்றுத்தருவார்கள். அப்படித்தான் எனது தாயார் இசை கற்றுக்கொண்டார். அவருக்குத் தமிழின் மீது ஆர்வம் அதிகம். எனது நண்பர்களின் நாடகங்களுக்கு அவர்தான் இசையமைத்துக் கொடுப்பார். முறையான இசைப்பயிற்சி என்றால் செம்பை வைத்ய நாத பாகவதரின் மருமகன் அனந்தமணி நெய்வேலி லிக்னைட் நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்ற வந்தார். அவரே எனக்கு முதல் குருவாகவும் அமைந்தார். முதல் நாள் அவர் வருவதற்குத் தாமதமாகவே நான் தூங்கி விட்டேன். என்னை எழுப்பி பாடவைத்தார். என் அம்மா சொல்லிக்கொடுத்த தியாகாராஜ கிருதி ஒன்றைப் பாடினேன். அடுத்த நாள் காலையிலேயே ஐந்து மணிக்குப் பாட்டு சொல்லித்தர வந்துவிட்டார். தொடர்ந்து சாதகம். நட்புடன் பழகினார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ‘எனக்கு இவ்வளவுதான் தெரியும். இதற்கு மேல் சொல்லித்தர வேறொரு ஆசிரியரை நானே ஏற்பாடு செய்கிறேன்’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டார். இப்படி வெளிப்படையாக சொன்ன அவரது பாங்கு வியப்பாக இருந்தது. நான் முதலில் கச்சேரி செய்த தருணத்தில் எனது குரு அனந்த மணி அவர்களே எனக்குத் தம்புரா போட்டார். ரசிப்பின் உச்சத்தில் அவரது கண்களிலிருந்து ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர் வழியும். அத்தனை ரசிகர் அவர்! அடுத்து ஸ்ரீரங்கம் ரங்கநாதன் என்ற் ஆசிரியர் பாண்டிச்சேரியிலிருந்து வாராவாரம் வந்து சொல்லித்தந்தார். இவர் ஆயிரம் கீர்த்தனைகள் தெரிந்த அபூர்வ ஆசிரியர்! இருந்தாலும் ஒருதடவை வந்தால் கால் கீர்த்தனைதான் கற்றுத்தருவார். பின்னால்தான் காரணம் புரிந்தது. அந்தக் கால் கீர்த்தனையை நான் பாடிப்பாடி சாதகம் செய்து எனது கற்பனையை அபிவிருத்தி செய்யவேண்டும் என்று அவர் எண்ணியிருக்கிறார். ஒரு கலையைக் கற்றுத்தரும்முறைகளில்தான் எத்தனை விதங்கள்! தவிர ஒவ்வொரு தடவையும் இசைப் பயிற்சி முடிந்தவுடன் அவர் எங்கோ செல்வார். ஒரு நாள் அவர் பின்னாலேயே சென்றபோது வேறொரு வித்வான் வீட்டுக்குச் செல்வதைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடிந்தது. அவர் பெயர் வெங்கட சுப்ரமணியம்! அபாரமான திறமை படைத்தவர். வயலின் வித்வான். நானும் அங்கு சென்று அவர்கள் பேசும் பேச்சுக்களையும், இருவரும் சேர்ந்து பாடும் பாடல்களையும் மெய்மறந்து கேட்பேன். ஒரு தடவை விடிய விடிய பாடினார்கள். இசைக்கடலில் ஆனந்தமாக மிதந்தேன். தேடித்தேடி ஒரு கலையைத் தேடும்போது அதில் ஒரு ஆனந்தம் இருக்கிறது. எங்கள் ஊர் சபாவுக்கு வராத வித்வான்களே கிடையாது. அங்கு பாடும் பாடல்களை டேப்களில் பதிவு செய்வோம். சென்னையிலிருந்து டேப்புகள் வரவேண்டும். நான் கஷ்டப்பட்டு ஒரு யுக்தி செய்து ஒரே டேப்பில் இரண்டு மடங்கு பாடல்களைப பதிவு செய்யும் முறையைக் கண்டுபிடித்தேன். இதெல்லாம் பெரிய சுவாரஸ்யம். பெரிய வித்வான் களெல்லாம் எங்கள் வீட்டில் வந்து சாப்பிட்டுப் போவார்கள். அது எங்களது பாக்கியம்.

உங்களது இசைப் பயிற்சிக்கு ஒரு நல்ல அங்கீகாரம் கிடைத்தது எப்போது?
சேஷ கோபாலன் சார் எங்கள் ஊருக்கு வந்தபோது அவரது இசையால் வசீகரிக்கப்பட்டு மயங்கி அவருடனேயே அவர் செல்லும் இடமெல்லாம் செல்வது என்று தீர்மானித்து விட்டேன். ஆனால் அவ்ர் ப்ளஸ்டூ முடித்து விட்டு வரச் சொன்னார். அதன்படியே படிப்பு முடிந்தவுடன் மதுரைக்குச் சென்று அவரது இல்லத்திலேயே தங்கி குருகுலவாசமாக இசை பயின்றேன். அவரது ரசிகனாகத்தான் நான் சென்றேன். அவரது இசை எனக்கு ஒரு பிரமிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது. அவர் எனக்கு குரு நாதராக அமைந்தது என் பாக்கியம். தினமும் எனது குருமார்கள் அனைவரையும் நினைத்துக் கொள்வேன். தொடர்ந்து இசைப்பயிற்சி, கற்பனை வளம் எல்லாவற்றுடனும் கூட குரு பக்தி மிகவும் அவசியம். இதை இன்றைய தலைமுறையினரும் உணரவேண்டும்.

தாங்கள் இன்று கர்நாடக இசையுலகில் அனைவராலும் விரும்பி ரசிக்கப்படும் ஒரு இசைக்கலைஞராக இருக்கும் அதே சமயம் பல மாணவர்களுக்கும் இசைப் பயிற்சியளிக்கவும் செய்கிறீர்கள். அதைப் பற்றி?
இப்போது இந்த கணினி யுகத்தில் உலகத்தின் எந்த மூலையில் இருந்து வேண்டுமானாலும் பாட்டு கற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம். என்னிடம் அமெரிக்காவில் இருக்கும் மாணவர்கள் பலபேர்களும் ‘ஸ்கைப்’ என்ற மென்பொருள் வழியாக இசை பயில்கிறார்கள். அங்கு செல்லும்போதெல்லாம் அவர்களுக்கு நேரிலும் பயிற்சியைத் தொடர்கிறேன். ஆக முன்பெல்லாம் ‘sky is the limit’ என்பார்கள் இப்போது ‘Skype is the limit’ என்று சொல்லலாம். தவிர முன்பெல்லாம் அசரீரி என்று வானில் இருந்து வரும் ஒலியைச் சொல்வார்கள். இப்போது electronic வழியாக எல்லாம் நடப்பதனால் கணினி வரும் ஒலியையும், காட்சிகளையும் ‘ஈ-சரீரி’ என்றும் கூடச் சொல்ல்லாம். எனது மனைவி மீரா நன்றாகப் பாடுவார். எனது மகள் ஸ்ரீ ரஞ்சனி மேடைக்கச்சேரிகள் செய்து வருகிறார். மகன் சங்கரப் பிரசாத் மிருதங்கம் பயில்கிறான். இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் இளம் தலைமுறையினர் அவர்களது வேலைகளைச் செய்ய பறக்கவேண்டியதாக இருக்கிறது. அதற்கிடையிலும் ஆர்வத்துடன் இசை பயில்கிறார்கள். அதற்கு கணினியும். வலைத்தளமும் பயன்படுகிறது. எதிர்காலத்தில் கர்நாடக இசை மேலும் அமோகமாக வளர்ச்சியடையும் என்பதில் சந்தேகமேயில்லை.

“Plant ” A Solution For Water Woes !!!!

Recycling grey water with the roots of plants like Canna can give you a perennial source of water. Hema Vijay tells you how

In Gandhi Nagar at Adyar, an eight-flat apartment complex revels in the luxury of a perennial ground water source, enabled by a simple plumbing arrangement and a few Canna Lily plants. Here, a PVC pipeline takes grey water (bath water, wash basin water and washing machine run-off water) from the apartment to a narrow Canna plant bed.

As grey water trickles down, it gets purified by the action of the Canna roots and the natural microbes present in the soil, and the treated water enters the ground water table. “This system is absolutely safe and easy. Our bore well has never gone dry, and we have never needed to buy water”, says V.S. Sukumar, who built and lives in this apartment block.

Since grey water accounts for 50-60 per cent of a household’s average daily water consumption of around 920 litres, this apartment recharges its ground water with roughly 4,000 litres of water every day.

Elsewhere in the city, former DGP V. Vaikunth and President of Home Exnora S. Indrakumar too recycle grey water in their homes. Dr. Indukanth S. Ragade, grey water recycling (GWR) expert and author of Self-reliance in Water – A Practical Manual for Town and City Dwellers has installed GWR systems in a few apartments.

At a time when our parched city is looking everywhere for water, these isolated efforts hold out a crucial roadmap

.Make it mandatory?

Countries like Japan and Israel have successfully addressed water shortages by recycling used water. In the US, states like Arizona and New Mexico promote GWR with tax credits. Should GWR be made mandatory in Tamil Nadu? “The law which made rainwater harvesting mandatory in October 2002 also says that grey water has to be recovered in situ and used for flushing of toilets. (chennaimetrowater.com). Known as the TN Municipalities Building Rules Act (1972), it was amended to include RWH and grey water reuse,” says Dr. Sekhar Raghavan, founder, Rain Centre.

In practice, we have unfortunately ignored GWR.

Purification process

“Plants like Canna indica (Kalvazhai), hedychium (sugandhi) and heliconium supply oxygen to the soil in the root zones. Using this oxygen, soil bacteria break down organic compounds in grey water and render the water clean,” says Ragade. Grey water consists of very small quantities of exhausted and unexhausted soaps and detergents, and small quantities of organic salts like washing soda. “Bacteria consume the organic components like Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonate (LABS). Detergents also contain inorganic compounds called STPP (Sodium Tri Poly Phosphate). This acts as a nutrient for the plants and is consumed under aerobic conditions,” says Raghavan. Adds Ragade, “The treated water may be used to recharge groundwater, or collected in dug wells/sumps and used for flushing toilets; it is safe for these uses.” The treated grey water has been tested by the Chennai water and sewerage board (CMWSSB) and found satisfactory.

However, kitchen waste water does not quite work. It contains suspended organic matter that could lead to foul smells; it requires much larger soil spaces (6-8 sq. ft per person). Bath and wash water are safer for recycling.

While organic alternatives are available and preferable, mild cleaning chemicals can still be handled by the natural cleansing action of soil and plant roots. However, do avoid powerful synthetic chemicals and detergents that promise swift action.

Meanwhile, a few recycling residents have been inspired to go totally organic. “I use soap nut powder with ash and a little baking soda, which keeps my vessels spotless; vinegar for cleaning ceramic ware; activated effective microorganisms (AEM) as a toilet cleaning agent; soap nut powder as washing powder, and lemon grass oil for floor cleaning,” says Kavitha Ramakrishnan.

1956 – நவம்பர் நுங்கம்பாக்கத்தில் பெரியவா முகாமிட்டிருந்தா. ஒரு நாள் ராத்திரி 10 மணிக்கு மவுண்ட் ரோடில் நடந்து சென்று கொண்டிருந்தார். 15 பேர் கூட சென்று
கொண்டிருந்தோம். இந்து பத்திரிகை ஆபீஸ் விஜயம்.

LIC கட்டிடம் அருகே வந்த போது கண்ணன பெரியவாளிடம் இது தான் புதுசா வந்திருக்கிற LIC அடுக்குமாடி கட்டிடம் என்று பெரியவாளிடம் கூறினார். சற்று நின்ற பெரியாவா என்னிடம் இதுலே மொத்தம் எததனை மாடிகள் என்றார்.

நான் தவறாக சொல்லி விட கூடாதென்று “சரியாக தெரியாது ..” என்றேன். “எண்ணி பார்த்துவிட்டு வா ..” என்று கூறி விறு விறு என்று நடக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்.

நான் இரண்டு மூன்று முறை எண்ணி’பார்த்தேன். பாதி எண்ணும் போதே கணக்கு விட்டு போய் மீண்டும் எண்ணும் படி ஆயிற்று . ஒருமுறை 12ம் மறுமுறை 13ம் வந்தது. அதற்குள் பெரியவா வெலிங்டன் டாக்கிஸ வரை சென்று விட்டிரு நதார். நான் ஓடி சென்று மூச்சிறைக்க நின்றேன். “எண்ணிட்டையா ? எத்தனை ? ” என்று பெரியவா கேட்டா. கீழிருந்து 13. டேரசை சேர்த்தா 14. ஆனா மாடிகள் 12 தான் வரது என்றேன். பெரியவா சிரித்து கொண்டார்.

“12 மாடிகளா ? இந்த வாரம் ஆனந்த விகடன் மேல் அட்டைலே வந்திருக்கிற பில்டிங் லே 18 மாடிகள் போட்டிருக்கே. நீ பார்த்தாயோ …? :” என்று கேட்டார். எனக்கு தூக்கி வாரி போட்டது. “நான் எண்ணி பார்க்கலே..” என்றேன். :”அப்புறம் போய் பாரு …” என்று நடந்தபடி கூறினார். கண்ணன் என்னை பார்த்து சிரித்தார் .

நான் சற்று பின் தங்கினேன். அந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் இருந்து மீளுவது அத்தனை எளிதாக இருக்கவில்லை. ஒரு பத்திரிக்கையைப் புரட்டுவதிலும் அதில் வரும் செய்திகளைப் படிப்பதிலும், படங்களை பார்ப்பதிலும் சாதாரண வாசகருக்கும் பெரியவளுக்கும் எத்தனை வேற்றுமை இருக்கிறது என்று எண்ணி வியந்தேன்.

மேலட்டையில் பிரசுரமாயிருந்த அந்த நகைச்சுவையைப் படித்தவர்கள் சிரிப்பு வந்திருந்தால் சிரித்து விட்டுப்பத்திரிகையை புரட்டியிருப்பார்கள். சிரிப்பு வராதவர்கள் சிரிக்காமலேயே புரட்டியிருப்பார்கள்.

எத்தனை பேர் ” அந்த கட்டிடத்தில் எத்தனை மாடிகள் வரைய பட்டிருக்கின்றன” என்று பொறுமையாக எண்ணி பார்த்திருக்க போகிறார்கள்.. ? பிறரை சொல்வானேன்? நானே பார்க்கவில்லை. (அந்த ஜோக் என்னுடையது. படம் கோபுலு வரைநதது ).

எதையும் ஆராயந்து நோக்கும் பெரியவாளின் அபூர்வ சக்தி அதிசயிக்கக்தக்கது என்றால் அவரது நகைச்சுவை யுணர்வு மிகவும் ரசிக்கதக்கதாக இருக்கும்.

When most 11-year-old girls day-dream about their idols, they fantasise about Harry Styles from One Direction and write his name in love hearts all over their school exercise books.

Not Shrinidhi Prakash. She is counting down the days until she meets her very own hero, the BBC’s business editor Robert Peston. She is a big fan of his work.

She hopes he will be impressed by the essay she has penned for him on economic growth, entitled Notes On Austerity. Quite clearly, Shrinidhi is no ordinary girl. This week, she beat more than 2,000 children to be crowned Britain’s first Child Genius – a sort of Mastermind-meets-Countdown, for the under 11s

Over the four-part series, 21 finalists aged eight to 11 were tested in quick-fire rounds such as Debating, Logic, Mental Arithmetic, Spelling and General Knowledge.

Not only were the questions so hard that many were beyond plenty of adults. But the stress for the children answering them was also mercilessly recorded by cameras, which seemed to take perverse pleasure in recording their faces crumple as, one by one, they crashed out of the competition.

‘She can’t tie her shoelaces but she can remember the exact order of a whole pack of playing cards’

Even cycling gold medallist Chris Hoy, a man used to the extreme edge of competition, tweeted that these intelligence tests made ‘the Olympics seem pretty stress-free’.

Other commentators questioned the programme’s seeming failure to acknowledge that other competitors in the group might possibly be on the autistic spectrum in case it jeopardised the fun they were having at the children’s expense.

Yet despite the intense pressure, Shrinidhi thrived. Not only did she manage to recall the order of an entire pack of 52 playing cards, but in the final programme she triumphed with a winning debate speech on whether money brings happiness, correctly identified Lake Baikal in Siberia as the largest freshwater pool in the world and correctly spelled the world ‘metallurgy’.

Shrinidhi’s achievement is all the more impressive when you consider that her first language is not even English, but Tamil, which she still speaks with her family at home, and she came to live in the UK from India only three years ago.

But the supreme irony is that of all the children in the competition, Shrinidhi appeared to be the least pushed by her parents, Suja and Raman. Indeed, the mild-mannered Indian couple looked like pussy cats compared to other tiger mothers in the show.

Shrinidhi, however, seemed to trundle through the competition in her own sweet way. Of all the children who appeared in the series, Shrinidhi, the current Under-12 World Scrabble Champion, seemed the most naturally gifted and the most rightful winner.

Champ: But her parents say she is not driven by achievement

Shrinidhi also showed early promise. By the age of three, she was already a mini media celebrity in India after she was filmed being able to remember the flags of more than 200 different countries. She had learned them by watching the flag-waving spectators at cricket matches with her father.

By five her parents noticed her talent for memory. It morphed into a precocious gift and she began using long words in English. When they introduced her to Scrabble soon after, she began trouncing players several times her age.

So when her father Raman was offered a job in IT in UK, they moved here not only to further his career but also their daughter’s – especially as she already spoke English better than 99.9 per cent of the people who live here already.

So how does Shrinidhi see her life panning out before her, now that she is officially Britain’s cleverest child?

‘I don’t see it as anything different. Because it’s part of my brain, I don’t see anything extraordinary. For me this is normal. One day I would like to study economics or etymology at university. But I would also like to have two Ferraris.’

So after being proclaimed a child genius, what is next on the agenda? Maths A-level? An early Oxbridge application? Thankfully no, says Suja: ‘It’s her Grade One Piano exam.’

புகைப்படம் எடுப்பது எனக்குப் பிடித்தமான பொழுதுபோக்கு.

பெரியவாள் முன்னிலையில், slide viewer –ல் ஸ்லைடுகளைப் போட்டுக் காண்பித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். அது, ஸ்லைடில் உள்ள படங்களை நான்கு மடங்கு பெரிதாகக் காட்டும். படங்களைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பெரியவாள், “இதில் ஸ்லைடு வைக்குமிடத்தில் நெகடிவ் பிலிமைப் போட்டால், நன்றாகத் தெரியுமா?” என்று கேட்டார்.

(பெரியவாளுக்குப் புகைப்படக் கலையின் ஒவ்வொரு நுட்பமும் தெரியும். ஆனால், தனக்குத் தெரிந்ததாகக் காட்டிக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள் என்பதும் எனக்குத் தெரியும்! ஆனால், என்னுடைய அக்ஞானம் என்னை விட்டுப் போய்விடுமா என்ன?)

”நெகடிவ் போட்டால், திரைப்படத்தில், கறுப்பு வெள்ளையாகவும், வெள்ளை கறுப்பாகவும் தெரியும்..”

பெரியவாள் உடனே, “அதுதான் எனக்கு வேணும்.. நரைத்துப் போன என் தலைமுடி, கறுப்பாகத் தெரியும்! நான் இன்னும் இளைமையாக இருப்பேனோல்லியோ…”

அருகிலிருந்து கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் அட்டகாசமாகச் சிரித்து மகிழ்ந்தார்கள்.

பெரியவாளுடைய நகைச்சுவை உணர்வு, எவரெஸ்டுக்கு மேலே பத்து அங்குலம்!

வானகரத்தில் ஒரு சவுக்குத் தோப்பில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார் பெரியவா. முன்னர் எடுத்திருந்த புகைப்பட ஆல்பத்தைக் கொடுத்தேன். அப்போது, பல்வேறு காரணங்களால் புகைப்படங்களில் குறைகள் ஏற்பட்டிருந்தன.

இந்தத் தோப்பில் எவ்விதக் குறைகளுமில்லாமல் புகைப்படம் எடுக்க முடியும் என்பது என்னுடைய துணிபு.

பெரியவா, ஒரு சிஷ்யரைக் கூப்பிட்டு, ஒரு தாழங்குடை கொண்டுவரச் சொல்லி, அதைத் தன் தலைக்கு மேல் பிடிக்கச் சொன்னார்.

“இப்போ போட்டோ எடுத்துக்கோ…”

அப்போது நான் எடுத்த புகைப்படம் மிக அருமையாக வந்திருந்தது. (பின்னால் கல்கி தீபாவளி மலர் ஒன்றில் ஸ்ரீருத்ர வாக்கியமான, ‘நமோ வன்யாய ச கக்ஷ்யாய ச’ என்ற விளக்கத்துடன் முகப்புப் படமாக வெளியாயிற்று).

பெரியவாள் தாழங்குடையைப் பிடிக்கச் சொன்னதற்கும் காரணம் இருந்தது. மரங்கள் வழியே வந்த ஒளி, அவர்கள் மேல் திட்டுத் திட்டாக விழுந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அந்த நிலையில் படம் எடுத்தால் நன்றாக வராது என்பதால், அந்த ஷாட் நன்றாக அமைய வேண்டும் என்பதற்கான சூழ்நிலையை உண்டாக்கிக் கொடுத்தார்கள்.

மெய்ப் படங்களைக் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தவர்கள் அவர்கள். நிழற் படங்களின் நுட்பங்களை எந்தக் குருகுலத்தில் கற்றுத் தெளிந்தார்கள்?
ஆயிரம் படம் படைத்த ஆதிசேஷ்னே அறிவார்!

” It is None Of My Business ” !!!

Its none of my Business…!!!

“Well, then… Jesus said, give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God..” (Mark-12:17- Holy Bible)
I like this statement. It has many deep interpretations..

One of it (may be mine..) is that We are not expected to do everything come in our way; even you have expertise or wisdom… Let Caesar do his and let God…

I have two challenges for writing this piece..

One: Last week, we discussed about taking call of others if it is beneficial..this week, I am arguing that we don’t have to do others work..!! I am afraid of your comment.. “Oh come on Rafeeque, your views are contradictory..!!!”

Two: This thought is very subtle. I drafted this story about ten times in mind before typing…am I able to put it across explicitly???

Let me share a couple of incidents which implanted this thought in me..

Incident # 1: 2004 Summer, I was attending a Vigilance Course at the CBI Academy, Ghaziabad, New Delhi. It was part of my employment in AAI..Though I forgot the name of the gentleman who inaugurated the session, I got stumbled upon one of his statement.. “before starting any vigilance investigation, you must confirm whether, it requires a vigilance investigation or is it a case of a disciplinary inquiry to be conducted by HR Department. At the first instance, if you feel so, do not investigate the matter but send to HR in a sealed cover for necessary action..”

Point: It is not that a vigilance officer who is not capable of investigating a disciplinary matter (most of the time..it is overlapped.. ). Because it is not his business; some one else to carry it out…

Incident #2: I was sitting in a prestigious High Court of the country, waiting for my case to board. In Courts, (for my non-lawyer friends..) each Bench would be allocated a specific nature of cases. Eg: Service matters, Labour matters, Criminal matters, Company matters etc., It was a service matter bench presided by the Chief Justice (CJ) Bench.. CJ is well known and popular by his depth in law and pro-activeness. When a counsel started arguing his matter passionately, CJ interfered and asked..

“Counsel, is it a matter involved a labor issue?”

“Yes, Me Lord..a part of it.. may be…” the lawyer admitted.

“Well, then I don’t have to hear this case. Lets transfer this to the Labour Bench..”

Point, It does not mean that the Hon’ble CJ is not acquainted with Labour matters. Rather he is an expert and has delivered land mark judgments in labor cases when he presided over the labour bench.. What he made it clear that he is not supposed to hear that matter at that point of time; it is some one else’s work…

Suddenly, both of these incidents jointly took me to a wonderful wisdom…I enjoyed it as if I cracked a life secret…!!

“Mind your own business”

It is absolutely okay to say openly that “it is none of my business” (be careful about your tone.. you will be tempted to be harsh..!!)

Yes friends, knowingly or not, we undertake many of things which may be done by some one else.. perhaps, they may be sitting quietly and enjoying it.. this happens both in professional and personal life..

the major road block for saying no to others work is the fear that the other person may think that you are a duffer…!!! it may be construed as your weakness, ignorance, excuse etc.,

Let me borrow the well known management principle “Whose Monkeys are in your shoulder ”? please check..

Often, we take other’s monkeys on our shoulder..and complain..Oh God..I am stressed…what a work load..!!

Friends, if a Chief Justice, in open court, can declare that it is not my work, if senior bureaucrats of our country can return files on the ground of not his/her area of work..Why shouldn’t we..?

I tell you, I am practicing this technique for quite a long time. Hardly I was told to take it back..in most of the cases, it works well..because, the other person knows that it is his/her work..

I believe, human being, by design, is meant to do a specific area of work ….not all..otherwise, we wouldn’t have lot of ‘subject matter experts’ around us..

Remember..so far in my experience, no employee has been rewarded by any employer because he/she used to do others work..!!!

Please note: Doing others work as a favor… is an exception to this theory

So, please have a look at your shoulder..and ensure that only your monkeys are sitting there…

கல்லூரியில் படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நாட்கள். பெரியவாளைப் பற்றிப் பொதுவாகத் தெரிந்து கொண்டிருந்தேனே தவிர, விசேஷமான பக்தி என்று எதுவும் இல்லாத காலம்.

திடீரென்று தரிசனம் கொடுத்தார்கள் – கனவில்! ‘ஏதோ, பிரமை’ என்று ஒதுக்கித் தள்ள முடியவில்லை. அடிக்கடி வந்து தரிசனம் கொடுத்தார்கள்.
இந்தப் புனிதக் கனவுகளுக்கு ஒரு கௌரவம் கொடுக்க வேண்டாமா?

குருவார விரதம் மேற்கொண்டேன். அது முதல் ஒவ்வொரு வியாழனிலும் தரிசனம் கிடைக்க ஆரம்பித்தது. சந்தோஷமாக இருந்தது. ஆனால் அது நீடிக்கவில்லை.
பெரியவா வருவதை நிறுத்திக் கொண்டுவிட்டார்கள். நான் என்ன தவறு செய்தேன்?

அன்று வியாழக்கிழமை. படுக்கையில் உட்கார்ந்து கண்களை மூடிக்கொண்டு பிரார்த்திக்கிறேன். ‘இன்றைக்காவது தரிசனம் கொடுக்கணும்’.
ஊஹூம்… பெரியவாள் வரவில்லை.

ரொம்பவும் ஏக்கமாகத்தான் இருந்தது. என் பிரார்த்தனையை ஏன் பெரியவாள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளவில்லை?

இரண்டு நாட்கள் கழித்து சொப்பனத்தில் காட்சி தந்தார்கள். “பெரியவாள் தரிசனம் முன்பெல்லாம் அடிக்கடி கிடைச்சுது. இப்போ பெரியவா வரதே இல்லை” என்று வருத்தத்துடன் கூறினேன்.

பெரியவாள் மெல்லச் சிரித்தார்கள். “எனக்கு வயசாயிடுத்தோன்னோ? நான் கிழவனாயிட்டேன். (தண்டத்தைக் காட்டி) இந்தக் குச்சியை எடுத்துண்டு அவ்வளவு தூரம் வரமுடியல்லே. நீ தான் என்னைப் பார்க்க வரணும்”.

“பெரியவா அனுக்ரஹம் இருந்தால் வருவேன்.”

“உத்ஸவத்துக்கு வரயா?”

“அனுக்ரஹம் செய்தால் வருவேன்”.

கனவு கலைந்தது. ஒன்றும் விளங்கவில்லை. எந்த உற்சவத்துக்கு வரவேண்டும்? அதற்கும் பெரியவாள் தரிசனத்துக்கும் என்ன சம்பந்தம்?

மறுநாளே அந்த ஆச்சரியம் நடந்தது.

சென்னையில் ஒரு கல்யாணத்துக்கு என் பெரியம்மா போக வேண்டியிருந்தது. “துணைக்கு நீ வாயேன். நீ வந்தால்,, போகிற வழியில், காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் பெரியவாளை தரிசனம் பண்ணிவிட்டுப் போகலாம்.”

அடுத்த நிமிடமே நான் தயாராகிவிட்டேன்!

மறுநாள் காலை நாங்கள் காஞ்சிபுரம் மடத்து வாசலுக்குச் சென்றபோது, அங்கே காமாக்ஷி வந்து நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தாள். ஏகக் கூட்டம். மூன்று பெரியவர்களும் வலம் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

“என்ன விசேஷம் இன்னிக்கு” என்று உள்ளூர்ப் பெண்மணியைக் கேட்டேன்.

“தெரியாதா உனக்கு? காமாக்ஷி கோயில் உத்ஸவம் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கு”.

எனக்கு எப்படி இருந்திருக்கும் என்று சொல்லத் தேவையில்லை. “உத்ஸ்வத்துக்கு வரயா?” – வெறும் கனவு அல்ல; தெய்வ சங்கல்பம்!

Dalit boy completes chemical engineering and lands job, despite all odds

Four years ago, L. Ponnudurai was cleaning tables at a restaurant in Rajapalayam bus depot. In a month from now, he will begin work in a reputed cement company, as a chemical engineer.

The story of this gritty Dalit boy from Gopalapuram village near Rajapalayam in southern Tamil Nadu is an inspiring one. When he was barely five years old, his mother had committed suicide. Soon after this, his father remarried and sent him away to his grandmother’s place.

A relative noted his keenness to learn and put him in a government Adi Dravidar hostel. “My relatives were mill labourers and earned very little. To avoid burdening them, I used to stay in the hostel even during holidays,” said Ponnudurai.

He scored 96 per cent in Class X, and friends suggested a vocational course at a polytechnic institute. But, Ponnudurai said, he was keen on studying further.

Scholarships helped him finish Class XII with 93 per cent. He, however, faced a roadblock when he wanted to pursue his dream of going to college, as he did not have money to buy a form and apply for engineering counselling.

One day, his former physics teacher spotted him working at Vasantha Bhavan in Rajapalayam. “The next day, all my teachers landed up there. They had pooled in money to send me to Chennai and apply for engineering,” said Ponnudurai.

But this was not the end of Ponnudurai’s struggle. He tried to apply for an education loan all on his own, but bank officials wanted his father to be present. “He came only after my school teachers pleaded with him and promised to pay for his travel,” he added.

Ponnudurai came to Chennai with Rs. 2,000 and two pairs of clothes, but these were not his concerns. “Having studied in Tamil, learning in English was very difficult,” he said. Taunts over his complexion or his trousers almost broke his will. “I ran away thrice from campus, vowing never to return, but friends persuaded me to go back. In the hostel, I kept to myself,” he said.

But now, life is looking up. He recently cleared a recruitment interview with Ramco Cements and has got a decent offer. “I cannot ask for more.They let me answer questions in Tamil. I did not want to work in an IT company. I studied chemical engineering and I really like the subject,” he said, smiling. He has other plans too. “In villages, even bright students are unaware of opportunities, admission procedures, and scholarships. I want to convince students there to finish college,” he said.

Singapore Changi Airport has been voted the World’s Best Airport at the 2013 World Airport Awards held at Passenger Terminal EXPO in Geneva. This is the fourth time Changi airport has achieved the top prize – last claiming victory back in 2010.
The awards are voted for by airport customers from around the world and this year the survey garnered 12.1 million responses.
For Changi, it was a triple success, as well as securing the top prize, it also picked up the awards for Best Airport in Asia and Best Airport for Leisure Amenities.

Last year’s winner, Incheon International Airport achieved a second place finish in the global rankings, and achieved major success in taking the awards for Best Airport Staff Service – Asia and Best International Transfer Airport.
