The walkway to Villondi Teertham, a sweet-water well that appears mysteriously in the midst of the ocean.  A small well here is filled with water. You are allowed a sip and the water is absolutely sweet. “This is where Rama pierced his arrow to ensure sweet water flowed to quench Sita’s thirst,” says the caretaker. Rama’s bow and arrow are said to be buried here. Hence the name Villondi Teertham.

The Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram has the world’s longest corridor.   The temple, which has the longest corridor in the world, stretches as stories from Ramayana are painted on every wall. There are many legends here, but the one that is most often reinforced is how Rama prayed to Lord Shiva to absolve him of any sins committed during the war. Rama asked Hanuman to get him a lingam from the Himalayas but as the monkey god took time, Sita carved a small lingam, which is placed in the sanctum here. The RamanathaswamyTemple stands tall inside the town as devotees make their way to cleanse themselves with a sacred bath at the 22 wells or teerthams that surround it. Rameshwaram,  has close to 64 theerthams and the holy water is stored in wells, ponds, tanks and one of them, the Agni Theertham, is the sea itself. Even today, it is believed that the tanks around the temple have a perennial source of water.

It was on this island in January 1897 that Swami Vivekananda, after his triumphant visit to Chicago to attend the Parliament of Religions in September 1893, set foot on Indian soil from Colombo.  Pilgrims from all over India visit Rameswaram Temple to bathe in the holy wells and in the sea. It is a well-known pilgrimage site. Only a few, though, know the mythological and historical importance of nearby Dhanushkodi.

Dhanushkodi is today a ghost town and human habitation is almost non-existent as only a few fishermen with their families now live here. On the fateful night of December 22, 1964, Indian Railways train number 653, the Pamban-Dhanushkodi Passenger, left Pamban with 110 passengers and five railway staff. It was only a few yards before Dhanushkodi railway station when it was hit by a massive tidal wave. The train was washed away, killing all 115 on board. In all, over 1,800 people perished in the cyclonic storm. Following this disaster, the town was declared unfit for living.

A survivor of the 1964 cyclone who now lives in Dhanushkodi supplies drinking water to tourists from a well on Dhanushkodi beach.

It is amazing that the well, which is just a few yards from the sea, supplies sweet drinking water.

A view from Kothandaramaswamy Temple, located 12 km from Rameswaram. Popular belief goes that Vibishana, brother of the demon king Ravana of Lanka, surrendered before Lord Rama here. The mythological importance assigned to this town is that when Lord Rama returned to India after vanquishing Ravana, Vibhishana pleaded with him to break the setu (bridge) so that no other armies would use it. Rama acquiesced to his request and broke the Indian side of the bridge with the end of his bow. This place came to be known as Dhanushkodi (Dhanush is ‘bow’ and kodi is ‘end’ in Tamil) and remains to this day a holy place for Hindus.

Just as there is a method to pull down an old building, there is a method to be followed in pulling down the complex structure of your mind. You can definitely achieve success by systematic efforts and become a master of yourself. The ladder must be as tall as the height to which you wish to climb, is it not? So too, your spiritual practice must be carried on till Realization (Sakshathkaram) is gained. The rice in the pot must be well boiled to become soft and tasty. Until that happens, the heat must be on. So too, in the vessel of body, with the water of the senses, boil the rice (mind), until it is cooked soft. The heat is your spiritual practice (Sadhana). Keep your Sadhana on, bright and shining; the jeeva (Individual) will at last become Deva (God).

ஒருநாள் காலை தர்சனத்துக்கு ஒரு வயஸான தம்பதி வந்திருந்தனர். பெரியவா ஒரு வாதா மரத்தின் கீழ் அமர்ந்து தர்சனம் குடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். தம்பதிகள் பழங்களை சமர்ப்பித்துவிட்டு நமஸ்கரித்தனர்.

“இதே மாதிரி வாதா மரம் ஒங்காத்து வாசல்ல இருந்துதே!……இன்னும் இருக்கோ?….”

You Can Not Multiply The Wealth by Dividing It !!!

When the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great,

but when government takes all the reward away,

no one will try or want to succeed !!!

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Socialist’s plan”. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A…. (substituting grades for dollars – something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Many clamour for the experience of spiritual bliss, but, few earn it, because they find themselves too weak to reject the clamour of the senses! Practice assiduously the larger programme of controlling the senses. A little enquiry will reveal that the senses are bad masters and very inefficient sources of knowledge; the joy they bring is transitory and fraught with grief. So long as one is dominated by sense pleasure, it cannot be said that his spiritual life has begun. For, the senses rush towards the temporary and the tawdry; thus, they foul the heart. God asks from each of you no other gift, no more valuable offering than the heart He has endowed you with. Give God that heart, as pure as when He gave it to you, full of the nectar of love He filled it with. Your devotion to God is best expressed by achieving the control of the senses.

Video Camera…..Tiger”s Choice!!!!!

An elderly couple on safari in India missed an opportunity to photograph a beautiful tiger up close – because it walked off with their camera. Photographer Dipankar Mazumdar witnessed the moment and began taking these incredible pictures.

She posed with her prize for the benefit of the jeeps present on the spot before turning around and rapidly walking away into the forest.

‘Deeper into the forest, we could catch glimpses of her using her teeth and paws to investigate into the contents of her prize.’

At this point, daylight was fading and the group had to head back to the park gates, with the couple resigned to losing their prized-possession to the tiger.

However, the bag was found the following morning and apart from some teeth and claw marks, its content were completely undamaged.

வெள்ளைக்காரன் புத்திசாலி!

கல்வித்துறையில் ரொம்ப பெரிய போஸ்டில் இருந்தவர் ஒருவர் மடத்துக்கு அடிக்கடி வருவார்.

ஒருதடவை அப்படி வரும் போது தன்னுடன் இரண்டு வெள்ளைக்காரர்களை அழைத்து வந்தார். வந்தவர், வெறுமனே அவர்களுடன் வரவில்லை, கூடவே “தன்னை நாடி இங்க்லாண்டிலிருந்து மாணவர்கள் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள்!” என்ற பெருமிதம் தலைக்கேற வந்தார்.

பெரியவாளுக்கு நமஸ்காரம் செய்து விட்டு “இவா ரெண்டு பேரும் லண்டன்ல ரிஸர்ச் பண்ணிண்டிருக்கா…. almost எல்லா சப்ஜெக்ட்லேயும் புகுந்து வெளையாடியிருக்கா….பொதுவா இங்க்லீஷ்காராளே ரொம்ப புத்திசாலிகள்! அதுலேயும் இவா ரெண்டு பேரும் ரொம்ப intelligent! பிஹெச்.டி பண்ணியிருக்கா… இங்க்லீஷ்லதான் வர்ஷாவர்ஷம் புதுசுபுதுசா வார்த்தைகள் சேர்ந்துண்டே போறதே! புது scientific வோர்ட்ஸ் நெறைய கண்டு பிடிச்சிருக்கா. அதான், அந்த பாஷை தேங்கிப் போய் பாஸி பிடிக்காம pureஆ இருந்துண்டு இருக்கு…”

யார் முன்னால் பேசினாலும் டம்பம் இல்லாமல் அடக்கமாகப் பேசவேண்டும். அதுவும் ஞானக்கடலான பெரியவா மாதிரி மஹான்கள் முன்னால், தெரிந்தாலும் பேசாமல் அடக்கமாக இருப்பதுதான் சிறப்பு.

தலைகால் தெரியாமல் அதிகம் பேசுவது நம்முடைய மடமை. ஏனென்றால் யார் முன் பேசுகிறோம்! ஒரு வழியாக அவர் மூச்சு விட சற்று நிறுத்தியதும், ஞான சாகரத்திலிருந்து ஒரு துளி வெளியே வந்து விழுந்து அங்கிருந்தோரைத் திணற அடித்தது.

“ஆமாமா….இங்க்லிஷ்காரன் ரொம்…ப புத்திசாலிதான்! நாம என்ன பண்றோம்? பாலைத் தயிரா ஆக்கறோம். அது ஸ்வபாவமா நடக்கறது. ஆனா, தயிரைப் பாலா மாத்தறதில்லே; ஏன்னா…..அது முடியாத விஷயம்.

அதுனாலதான் அக்ஞானிகளான நாம, அந்த மாதிரில்லாம் முயற்சி பண்றதில்லை. ஆனா, இங்க்லிஷ்காரன் புத்திசாலியோன்னோ…. “இதோ, தயிரைப் பாலாக்கி காட்டறேன்”..னான்! Butter Milk ன்னு ஒரு வார்த்தையை கண்டுபிடிச்சுட்டான்! பாத்தியா! எவ்ளோ..வ் சுலபமா butterஐ மில்க் ஆக்கிட்டான்!

நாம என்னவோ அதை “மோர்”ன்னு சொல்றோம்; milk ன்னு சொல்றதில்லே”…. புன்சிரிப்புடன் பெரியவா சொன்னதும் கல்வித்துறையின் முகத்தில் ஈயாடவில்லை. சுற்றி இருந்தவர்கள் இந்த விளக்கத்தை கேட்டு, அதிலிருந்த “இதுநாள் வரை காணத் தவறிய” உண்மையை உணர்ந்து புன்னகைத்தனர்.

அந்த வெள்ளைக்கார மாணவர்களோ, பெரியவா சொன்னதை மொழி பெயர்த்து கேட்ட பின்,

“Oh ! My God ! It is not a butter research; but a better research!!!!!என்று ஆச்சர்யப்பட்டு மிகவும் ரசித்தார்கள்….
