The “X” in “Xmas” Doesn’t Take the “Christ” Out of “Christmas” !!!
Myth: “Xmas” is a non-religious name / spelling for “Christmas”.
It turns out, “Xmas” is not a non-religious version of “Christmas”. The “X” is actually indicating the Greek letter “Chi”, which is short for the Greek
, meaning “Christ”. So “Xmas” and “Christmas” are equivalent in every way except their lettering.
In fact, although writing guides such as those issued by the New York Times; the BBC; The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style; and Oxford Press discourage the use of Xmas in formal writing, at one time, it was a very popular practice, particularly with religious scribes, who are thought to have started the whole “Xmas” thing in the first place. Indeed, the practice of using the symbol “X” in place of Christ’s name has been going on amongst religious scholars for at least 1000 years.
Eventually, this shorthand trick spread to non-religious writings where nearly everywhere “Christ” appeared in a word, the Greek Chi would replace that part of the word. For example, in the 17th and 18th centuries, there are numerous non-religious documents containing instances of “Xine”, which was a common spelling for someone whose name was Christine.
Bonus Facts:
- The “-mas” part on the end of Christmas and Xmas comes from the Old English word for “mass”.
- Other classic common abbreviations for “Christ” were: “Xp” and “Xt”, again both an abbreviated form of the Greek for Christ.
The Greek letters “X” (Chi) and “p” (Rho) superimposed together was once a very common symbol signifying Christ and was called, somewhat unimaginatively, the Chi-Rho.- The Chi-Rho was also used by scribes in a non-religious sense to mark some passage that was particularly good, with it literally implying “good”.
- In 1977, the Governor of New Hampshire issued a press release stating that journalists should cease taking the “Christ” out of “Christmas” as “Xmas” was a pagan spelling of Christmas. Perhaps he should have run that press release by a religious scholar before issuing it.
- Although, even those well versed and respected in Christianity often make the same mistake, such as Franklin Graham in an interview on CNN: “For us as Christians, this is one of the most holy of the holidays, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. And for people to take Christ out of Christmas. They’re happy to say merry Xmas. Let’s just take Jesus out. And really, I think, a war against the name of Jesus Christ.”

The Man Who Invented AK 47 Is No More…Here is His Greatest Regret ….
Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of the famous AK-47 assault rifle, has died at the age of 94,according to Russia Today. He had reportedly been suffering from heart problems and was in intensive care since November.

The Kalashnikov AK-47 is frequently cited as the world’s most popular assault rifle, with its only serious rival being the American M-series rifle. Still, Kalashnikov had mixed feelings about his success.
“I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawnmower,” he said on a visit to Germany in 2002.
Kalashnikov was a self-taught peasant turned tank mechanic who never finished high school, RT writes, and he only became a weapon designer after he was shot in the shoulder in World War II. The AK-47 was introduced in 1948 and became one of the first assault rifles of the 2nd generation. Its remarkable success come from a variety of factors, including durability and low production cost — they reportedly sold in war-torn countries for as little as $US15. However, their popularity amongst criminals and terrorists led to some concern for the inventor.
“Whenever I look at TV and I see the weapon I invented to defend my motherland in the hands of these bin Ladens, I ask myself the same question: ‘How did it get into their hands?’ ” Kalashnikov said in 2006. “I didn’t put it in the hands of bandits and terrorists, and it’s not my fault that it has mushroomed uncontrollably across the globe. Can I be blamed that they consider it the most reliable weapon?”
“It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon,” he explained again in 2009, on his 90th birthday.
In hindsight, too, many would have regretted another decision. The original design for the AK-47 was never patented, and Kalashnikov reportedly never saw any of the profits from his invention— a few years ago it was estimated that half the AK-47s in the world were actually counterfeits. Still, the inventor never seemed to mind.
“At that time, patenting inventions wasn’t an issue in our country,” he explained in 2006. “We worked for socialist society, for the good of the people, which I never regret.”

Aircraft Wings Hit The Building While Taxiing ” !!!
A British Airways jet crashed into a building just before take-off at Johannesburg’s main airport last night, injuring four airport officials.
The flight, which was on its way to London, veered off the taxiway as it headed to the runway and buried its right wing in the two-storey brick structure.
A spokesman for OR Tambo airport said all 182 passengers were taken off the 747 to spend the night in a hotel.
A statement from the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s (SACAA) preliminary report, the B747-400 aircraft was cleared for takeoff on Runway 03L.
It said: ‘It was confirmed to the SACAA that the air crew got instructions from the Air Traffic Control to taxi using taxi way B. The crew continued onto taxi way M which is narrower resulting in the aircraft impacting on an office building behind the SAA Technical hangers.

‘Four officials (of Bidvest, a South Africa-based distribution services and trading business) who were in the building were injured by the debris. The 17 Crew and 185 passengers who were in the aircraft escaped unharmed and were evacuated from the aircraft through door no. 5.
‘The South African Civil Aviation Authority wishes a speedy recovery to the injured officials.’
Fuel spillage was reported from the aircraft but this was contained by the airport fire services without further incident.
The SACAA dispatched investigators last night and early this morning they witnessed the recovery of the aircraft as well as the removal of the flight recorder from the aircraft. The investigation continues.
Harriet Tolputt, head of media for Oxfam, was on the flight and snapped the picture above.
She posted on Twitter: ‘BA plane crashes into building at J Burg airport. No one injured only the pilot’s pride. Not impressed that first class passengers get off before premium economy during an emergency.’
British Airways said an investigation was underway.
A spokesman said: ‘A British Airways Boeing 747 was damaged while taxiing at Johannesburg airport.
‘The 182 customers disembarked safely and there were no reported injuries on board the aircraft.
‘Customers were looked after by our staff and provided with hotel accommodation and we are arranging alternative flights for them.
‘We have launched a full investigation into the incident and are giving our assistance to the independent South African Civil Aviation Authority with the matter.’
