Water ATM … Smile on the Face of Rajasthan Villagers …

An Indian energy major and modern technology have combined to bring about a revolution in two districts of Rajasthan that were infamous due to the scarcity of potable water. Thanks to water ATMs, many otherwise arid villages here have 24X7 access to the COMMODITY at the swipe of a card — at 20 litres for Rs.5.

Under Cairn India’s “Jeevan Amrit Project,” kiosks with reverse osmosis (RO) plants have been installed to provide safe drinking water in villages like Bhakharpur, Kawas, Guda, Jogasar, Aakdada and Baytu to benefit 22,000 people.

“The project is a good example of a PPP model, where Cairn India has partnered with the Rajasthan government’s Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Tata Projects and the respective village panchayats to provide potable drinking water at the doorsteps of the local community,” Cairn India CSR head Nilesh Jain told IANS.

Rajasthan, with 10.4 percent of the country’s geographical area, 5.5 percent of the population and 18.70 percent of the livestock, has only 1.16 percent of surface water available in the country.

The State is one of the driest in the country. Rainfall is erratic and there is a large variation in its distribution pattern in the State. The average annual rainfall ranges from 100 mm in Jaisalmer to 800 mm in Jhalawar.

At present, 22 RO plants (17 with the swipe facility) catering to drinking water needs of 22,000 villagers on a daily basis are up and running. The project is expected to scale up in the coming years in terms of number of plants and locations. Through this technology, villagers can now get clean drinking water by swiping their smart cards in the machines installed at the plant,” Cairn India general manager (CSR) Ritu Jhingon told IANS.

The cards come with an initial value of Rs.150 and can be recharged for a similar amount. Plans are afoot to also provide Rs.20 recharges.

This makes the dispensers self-sustaining, with the revenue earned used by the village’s water committee to meet the running expenses of the RO plant, such as salary of the operator, electricity and maintenance. The surplus MONEY is used to undertake developmental work in the village.

And to maximise its reach, water from the RO plants is transported to the surrounding dhanis (hamlets) through vehicles at nominal charges (Rs.1 to Rs. 2 extra, as decided by the water committee).

The dispensers are getting increasingly popular among the locals with more and more people purchasing the smart cards.

“Once it was difficult to get water, forget about clean water to drink. Now things have changed. I can, at any time, get clean water for my family,” Ram Pyari, a resident of Kawas village, told IANS.

Such sentiments are echoed by other users, including Ratna Ram, sarpanch of Sawai Padam Singh village, who became a role model after he inspired more than 100 households in his village to utilise safe drinking water and four another village sarpanchs to initiate the “Jeevan Amrit” project in their gram panchyats.

“My father used to regularly take painkillers for a long time as he suffered from severe joint pain. We have been using RO water for six months now, and miraculously my father has stopped taking medicines for the last two months,” Ratna Ram told IANS.

The number of water-borne diseases, such as diarrhoea in children, has also come down. Cases of joint pain caused by high fluoride content in drinking water have also decreased.

Writer Indira SoundarRajan Shared his experience in tamil monthly Mangaiyar Malar …

Message For the Day…” Get rid of your Ego and Give up Greed …”

No one will like the one who is conceited and egotistic. Even your spouse and your own children, though they may appear to respect you externally, will not be happy with you, when you are an arrogant person. Not just that, as long as you are filled with ego, it is highly unlikely that you will really be happy. Therefore at the very outset, you should get rid of your ego (ahamkara). So too, when you are filled with anger, you cannot experience joy; you are bound to be miserable. Only when you subdue anger you will be able to experience happiness. Similarly, when you are filled with insatiable desires, you will not really feel wealthy. The moment you give up desires, all riches will come to you. If you stay greedy, you will be a stranger to happiness. Give up greed, and you will feel endowed with all riches.

Joke of the Day…” This is ridiculous…”!!!

A pipe burst in a doctor’s house. He called a plumber. The plumber arrived, unpacked his tools, did mysterious plumber-type things for a while, and handed the doctor a bill for $600.

The doctor exclaimed, “This is ridiculous! I don’t even make that much as a doctor!.”

The plumber quietly answered, “Neither did I when I was a doctor.”

Message For the Day…” Reduce Your Wants …Live Simply…”

In a large gathering, people speak many languages. Each person understands only their language, and wants that they should be spoken to in that language. But there is a language of the heart, which all can understand and all would like to hear. That is the language which I speak, the language that goes from My heart to yours. When heart speaks to heart, it is love that is transmitted without any reservation. Trials, turmoil and thrills – these are constant for all of mankind. The responsive heart listens to these with sympathy and answers with love. Everyone is eager to be happy; everyone wants to work less and gain more, give little and get amply, but no one experiments with the other method, that is, wanting less and giving more. Every want is a shackle that hinders movement, and is a drag on the foot. Reduce wants; live simply, that is the way to happiness.

An Interesting Personality of Coimbatore !!!

A stickler for keeping accounts, Govindarajulu was also one of the earliest bikers in Coimbatore. Photo: Special Arrangement

Govindarajulu kept track and account of every rupee, anna and paisa along

with accompanying invoices or vouchers.

The boy who hated maths while pursuing his education at the ancient Veeraswamy School ended up as a meticulous chronicler of FINANCIAL transactions! And this made M.A.Govindarajulu (1917 – 2009) an important part of the iconic Asoka Betelnut Company for over seven decades. Born to M.K.Ananthapadmanabhan and Rajalakshmi during the end of the Great War, Govindarajulu lost his parents as a toddler. He was brought up by his grand aunt Seethalakshmi Ammal, who brought up a number of her near and dear with enormous love. Even today, the Seethalakshmi Maternity home on Krishnaswamy Road administered by the Coimbatore Corporation continues to serve society.

Coimbatore was one of cities to take advantage of the fall out of the great depression of 1929 and a number of entrepreneurs such as Asoka M.K.Krishna Chetty came up at a meteoric pace. Govindarajulu joined his uncle Krishna Chetty as his Man Friday for accounts and cash management at his betelnut company and performed his job with aplomb for nearly 74 years. He was a workaholic and began work by 6 a.m. Thereafter he would go home for a quick breakfast at 8 a.m. only to return to the office by 8.30 a.m. Except for a brief lunch break for an hour, Govindarajulu worked until 8 p.m. He did not travel much and was wedded to his job.

Those days, Asoka Betelnut Company had nearly 100 sales depots and Govindarajulu would prepare and present a perfect statement of accounts of each one of them by 8.30 a.m. every day to his uncle.

Govindarajulu kept track and account of every rupee, anna and paisa along with accompanying invoices or VOUCHERS. And this was not just at work. He was like this even at home and his wife Saraswathi whom he married in 1937, got used to this.

He maintained separate day books and ledgers for home expenses and INVESTMENTS. He preserved each one of the books until he passed away in 2009.

It is astonishing and inspiring to notice his last journal entry on the 5th of December 2009, barely three days before his demise. Even in the last month of his life, Govindarajulu filed the sales tax returns by the first week itself.

Govindarajulu also maintained the bank pass books and day books of son M.G.Ramkumar, daughter-in-law Jayamma, grand son Gopalakrishna, grand daughter-in-law Vidya and of his great grand children Adarsh and Smriti.

His book entries tell an interesting story of the evolving times. Plus, they have some interesting entries. Such as the one that records the expenses incurred while hosting Kalki Sadasivam and Bharat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi; or the one about an expenditure of Rs. 18 towards purchase of grocery for his own wedding! As the rupee, anna and paisa evolve into rupees and paisa in his books, one notices the slow and sure advent of inflation.

Govindarajulu also preserved coins, stamps, letters, invitations and news paper cuttings. He would surprise people by giving them old invitations of weddings of their family members. When the famous hardware store M.S.Manickam and Company, as part of its jubilee celebrations, announced a REWARD to the customers who produced their old sales invoices, Govindarajulu participated in the same and won gold coins for all the first three prizes. Later he gave the coins away to the church patronised by the family of M.S.Manickam and Company.

Incidentally, Govindarajulu was also one of the earliest bikers in Coimbatore.

A Potter’s Prayer to Pillaiyar….

Clay-idol makers and the tradition of the eco-friendly pacha-mann pillayar are on the wane

Kasturi amma’s Ganeshas are simple, earthy, eco-friendly and hand-made with love and bhakti. A month before Ganesh Chaturthi, 80-year-old Kasturi observesviratham and starts collecting mud and sand for making the Ganesha idols. “The clay is a mixture of half-a-dozen ingredients such as elephant poop, sieved river sand, karambai mann and sometimes hay. It takes a fortnight to get ready,” says Kasturi. Once the clay gets mixed into a homogenous paste, she sits day and night making the murtis. With her deft hands, Kasturi moulds, rolls and shapes the clay into two-feet-tall little Ganeshas. They all look plump, cute and perfect. “It’s difficult to get the trunk,” says Kasturi while swirling her fingers over a lump of clay to make the trunk. She quietly murmurs a prayer and closes her eyes in VENERATION and the trunk comes out just right. For over 40 years after the death of her potter husband, Kasturi and her son eldest son Srinivasan have kept tradition alive. Tucked inside a narrow lane off the Arapalayam road is their small house stacked with mud pots.

“Earlier we used to sell hundreds of idols. There were over 300 potter families in Arapalayam. The demand used to be so high that most times, we fell short of hands to cater to orders,” recalls Srinivasan. “This year, we have got orders for just 10 idols.” Once, it was the tradition to worship a pacha-mann pillayar which was later immersed into ponds or lakes. As the water bodies have dried up, the takers for the eco-friendly pure-clay idols have come down in the past few years. Potters also feel that the invasion of plaster-of-paris has taken away the charm of clay idols.

Idols made of clay are of two kinds – one in which the idol is baked and the other which is left to dry in the sun. While the baked idols are painted and used as a showcase item, the kaccha murtis are traditionally kept in pujas. In certain techniques, potters also mix hay dust instead of elephant dung and the idols made like that are called Sandu pillayar. “Only if the customer wants, we paint it with watercolours. Else, our idols are mostly in the colour of the earth,” says Kasturi. “The authorities call for eco-friendly idols every year, but sadly people only buy those big chemical-paint ones.”

The making of a two-feet-tall pacha-mann pillayar can take a week. It’s hand-built from the bottom without any mould. Kasturi finishes making the feet and legs first and leaves it for drying for a day or two. Then, she starts making the tummy and the body of the idol and proceeds step-wise. “Idol making is sacred. It involves a number of rituals and strict adherence to purity,” explains Mahalingam, another potter. “Only on the early morning before Chaturthi, the eyes of the idol are made.”

Most of Kasturi’s orders come from the kids in the area, who fondly call her paati. Groups of kids get together, pool in their pocket MONEY to buy a small idol. “They usually ask for discounts and I give idols to them even at half the price,” says Kasturi, who sells the two-feet idols for Rs.200 and bigger ones for Rs.300 or Rs.400. Srinivasan has also made a six-feet idol for this year, which he has priced at Rs.5,000.

Clay-idol makers also rue the lack of mud and sand. Earlier, they used to collect sand from the Vaigai and the karambai mann was easily available in the kanmois surrounding Arapalayam. Half of those kanmois have vanished under encroachments and the others don’t have any mud left in their beds. “Now we buy clay from Thurvariman and Kochadai. The costs have gone up. It’s not a lucrative business. Yet I do it to keep up the tradition. I consider myself gifted to be able to make such beautiful murtis of the Lord,” says Kasturi. “I only pray to Ganesha that we get more rains and our natural resources remain plentiful.”
