MY STORY: “I Grew up in Karnataka Disliking Tamilians. Then This Happened….”

He had grown up observing the endless conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and had formed some preconceived notions about Tamilians and their language. But once he got a chance to live in TN, his perspective changed forever. There were several humbling incidents that led to this change. And here is one of them.

Having been born and bought up in Karnataka, I had witnessed a lot of conflict between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while growing up – sometimes for water and sometimes for linguistic equality. That’s why when I got a job in Chennai, I was really shocked. Over the years, I had developed an unfortunate prejudice against the people and language of the other state. And now, I had to go and live there. I was very unsure about this decision initially. Little did I know that I was in for a surprise.

After reaching Chennai, with every passing day, I slowly began to realise that the reality was very different from what I had grown up imagining.

People here were caring, honest, friendly and really inspiring. They completely changed my attitude towards the state. I also learnt that Tamilians love and have a high regard for Kannadigas. –

Today, I have been in Chennai for three years. I know how to speak Tamil, and I cannot tolerate it if someone says something bad about the state. This place has always offered me its best. It has helped me attain financial stability, and has supported my journey towards my dreams.

There were several incidents which changed my outlook towards Tamil Nadu and its people, and here is one of them.

While in Chennai, I got associated with an NGO. This had always been my dream, and was also my way of giving back to the city which had welcomed me with open arms. One day, as part of the work related to this NGO, my roommate and I were travelling to SODEWS (Society for the Development of Economically Weaker Sections), which is situated near Yelagiri, 200km away from Chennai.

We took a train from Chennai to Vaniyambadi station and from there we took a private bus that goes to Alangayam. We had to get down at Niniyampattu station which is 7km away from Alangayam.

I had a bag which contained a few things that we had to deliver to some children in SODEWS. The bus was so crowded that I had to keep the bag in the separate luggage section.

It was a new place, so we were extra alert about getting off at the right stop. But when we finally did, I forgot to take my bag along. We then went into a small shop, and it was only five minutes later when I realised that I had left my bag.

It was a remote area. I did not remember anything about the bus except for its colour. And there was very little chance of finding another vehicle to chase the bus. I started asking around the shop, but the owner told me that there was no chance of finding the bus and I should forget about the bag. I told him that it had one book, a bunch of pencils purchased for SODEWS students, and my mother’s medical reports.

Suddenly, another person who was purchasing something at the shop and was listening to our conversation, said – “One of you can come along with me and I will help you catch the bus.”

He helped me in a completely selfless way

I told him that it was not very important, but he insisted, saying that we should give it a try. We rode for about 7km in search of the bus and finally found it as it was entering the Alangayam bus stand! –

Since vehicles were not allowed inside the stand, he asked me to go and collect my belongings. And then, he even dropped me back to the same place from where we had started.

I was really grateful for the way he helped me in such a selfless manner.

This was one man who was not concerned about where I came from, what language I spoke, or what religion I followed. All he was doing was helping me out in a time of need, just for the sake of humanity.

With this story, I would like to tell all my Kannadiga and Tamilian brothers and sisters, that instead of discussing and arguing about who is superior, and who is not, let’s all take pride in being human beings. Let’s maintain brotherhood and work with each other towards the development of the country as a whole.

The healthy foods you’re not eating…….

Purple carrots contain vitamin E and beta carotene like their orange counterparts but are also full of other goodies.

You may be all over quinoa and love kale, but there are some less common health foods that you need to start incorporating into your diet.

Red cabbage

Go for this vibrant-hued cabbage the next time you’re in the mood to mix things up in the vegie department. Red cabbage is low in calories, high in fibre, plus it’s rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K.

Sardines

They may be tiny but sardines pack a punch in the nutrition department. They’re high in omega-3 fats which are great for the heart, along with vitamin D, iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium and B vitamins. If you’re looking for a fish alternative consider adding sardines to your food repertoire.

Pumpkin seeds

You may occasionally come across these tiny bite-sized bits of goodness in a protein ball recipe or as a topping on salads but consider adding them to your diet as a snack alternative. The seeds are actually the most nutritious part of a pumpkin! They’re high in magnesium, full of copper, protein and zinc and are also a great source of antioxidants.

Radishes

Radishes are a great detoxifier and help eliminate toxins and free radicals from the body. They’re also jam packed with vitamin C and are a great source of folate, fibre, vitamin B6, magnesium and potassium.

Purple carrots

Orange carrots? Been there, done that. So how about the purple variety? They’re equally as healthy, if not more so. Purple carrots contain vitamin E and beta carotene like their orange counterparts but are also full of anthocyanins, the antioxidant compound that can help improve memory, protect against heart attacks and enhance vision. Plus who doesn’t love the novelty of a purple carrot?

Swiss chard

You may know this green leafy vegetable by its other name silverbeet. Just one cup of Swiss chard can provide you with 300 per cent of your required daily intake of vitamin K. It’s also a great source of vitamin C and vitamin A and is full of magnesium, potassium, iron and fibre.

Turnips

Along with broccoli, brussels sprouts and kale, turnips are part of the nutritious cruciferous family. Turnips are full of vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and potassium. They’re a great low-calorie alternative to potatoes and are packed full of fibre which will help you stay full for longer.

When common people say, ‘Idi naa dehamu’ (this is my body), scholars would interpret the expression ‘naa dehamu’ and say, it connotes ‘I am not the body’ (as ‘naa’ means ‘not’). Extending the same logic, it is possible for you to maintain a state of perfect equanimity unaffected by pain and pleasure at all times by affirming, ‘these sorrows and difficulties as well as happiness and pleasure are not mine. I am beyond these dualities.’ When you say, ‘It is my body’ doesn’t it automatically imply, ‘I’ is different from ‘the body’? When you are separate from your body, why should you feel the pain out of it? The truth is, you are unable to overcome the delusion of body attachment and are also unable to bear the pain caused to the body, as you remain at the level of a human being. Be aware that as long as you are attached to the body, sorrows, difficulties and pain will haunt you.

 

It Was Mangalyaan’s First Birthday, and ISRO Celebrated It with a Mars Atlas….

To celebrate the completion of Mangalyaan’s first year in the orbit around Mars, ISRO has released a Mars Atlas which is a compilation of all the amazing pictures and data collected from the red planet so far.

The Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft, which entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, has completed one year of its life around the red planet.

Marking the first anniversary – the day on which India created history by successfully placing Mangalyaan in the orbit around Mars, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has released a commemorative Mars Atlas.

“With the launch of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) on 5th November 2013, India has ushered a new era of planetary exploration of Mars and its environment,” says the introduction in the atlas.

It is a compilation of many spectacular images obtained by the Mars Colour Camera (MCC).

In this past year, all five payloads of MOM have collected a large set of data, and all of it is a part of this scientific atlas.

“The images from MCC have provided unique information about Mars at varying spatial resolutions. It has obtained Mars Global data showing clouds, dust in atmosphere and surface albedo variations, when acquired from apoapsis at around 72000 km. On the other hand high resolution images acquired from periapsis show details of various morphological features on the surface of Mars. Some of these images have been showcased in this atlas. The images have been categorized depending upon the Martian surface and atmospheric processes,” said the official ISRO release informing about the atlas.

The atlas has been released by the Space Applications Centre of ISRO in Ahmedabad. It provides a lot of information in vivid detail, explaining the different features of the red planet such as its craters, moons, volcanic features, tectonic features and more. And all of it is accompanied by Mars’s brilliant pictures.

The MOM spacecraft, which was designed, built and launched in just two years, has five scientific instruments to record five different aspects of the planet. These include the geology, morphology, atmospheric processes, surface temperature and atmospheric escape process.

While the Mars mission was initially planned for just six months, it is now expected to last longer. The ISRO chairman, AS Kiran Kumar, recently informed that the mission can last many years because they have not seen any failures so far, and about 35kg of fuel is still left in the spacecraft.

Few Tips For Preventing Heart Disease….

1. Control of blood pressure below 140/90

2. Control of blood sugar

3. Control of cholesterol level where bad cholesterol or low density cholesterol should be less 100 milligram per decilitre

4. Moderate physical activity: brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes, at least five days a week or walk 10,000 steps everyday.

5. Quit smoking RIGHT NOW.

6. Maintain your ideal body weight, which means the body mass index or the BMI should be less than 30.

7. Abstinence from alcohol or moderate consumption of alcohol; MAXIMUM of 30 to 45 ml of whiskey per day can be consumed. This limit is for those who are already alcohol drinkers.

But if you don’t drink then please do not start if you want to keep coronary artery diseases at bay.

8. Intake of lot of fresh fruits and vegetables is advised. More colourful and green leafy vegetables should be included in your daily diet; at least three servings in a day.

9. The choice of nuts should be almonds or walnuts.

10. Avoid desi ghee, butter, saturated fats and go for plant oils like mustard oil or olive oil or sunflower oil.

Is desi ghee good for heart?

No. Desi ghee is also an animal fat. People think that everything from cow is good for health but desi ghee made from cow’s milk is not good for the heart.

People must understand that it is animal fat and so fully saturated fat, especially if you consume it in the form of butter ormakkhan, which contains butyric acid and that is very, very bad for the heart.

How can one achieve a blood pressure count of below 140/90?

Lifestyle modification, control of body weight and if it (hypertension) doesn’t come down to desired level then addition of drugs (medicines) as prescribed and with consultation of a doctor is important.

Hypertension is a silent killer.

It is the most prevalent cardiovascular disease in our country. Every third Indian is suffering from high blood pressure. And because it is an asymptomatic disease you require proper screening, regular check ups so that you can diagnose this silent killer early and change your lifestyle and add drugs, if necessary, to control hypertension.

Remember that diabetes and hypertension are the most important risk factors for coronary artery diseases.

Diabetes is a disease that affects your heart and brain.

High blood pressure is a very common cause for stroke and can cause hemorrhagic strokes.

Diabetes can cause thrombotic strokes as well as hemorrhagic strokes.

Diabetes can affect your brain, eyes, kidney and heart.

How does one control the blood sugar level?

By regular exercise and by avoiding obesity, especially central obesity that is a pot belly. Insulin resistance is very high in people with central obesity.

If central obesity is not controlled or if there is a history of diabetes in your family then get periodic check ups and test you HbA1c, that is the Glycated Hemoglobin is very important to detect early onset of diabetes.

HbA1c or Glycated Hemoglobin should be less than six because if it is higher than this level then even if your blood sugar level is normal, there could be a mild variation in your blood sugar level, which can be detected using the HbA1c test.

Super Blood Moon eclipse on night of September 27-28…

There is a total eclipse of the moon on the night of September 27-28, 2015. It happens to be the closest supermoon of 2015. It’s the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon, or full moon nearest the September equinox. It’s the Southern Hemisphere’s first full moon of spring. This September full moon is also called a Blood Moon, because it presents the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad: four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months (full moons) apart. Phew!

The total lunar eclipse is visible from the most of North America and all of South America after sunsetSeptember 27. From eastern South America and Greenland, the greatest eclipse happens around midnight September 27-28. In Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the total eclipse takes place in the wee hours of the morning, after midnight and before sunrise September 28. How is the Harvest Moon different from other full moons ?

Who will see the September 27-28 total lunar eclipse? The September 2015 full moon passes directly through Earth’s dark (umbral) shadow. The total part of this eclipse lasts for 72 minutes. A partial umbral eclipse precedes totality by some 64 minutes, and follows totality by about the same period of time, so the moon takes about 3 and 1/3 hours to completely sweep through the Earth’s dark shadow.

North America, South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Greenland, Europe, Africa and the Middle East are in a good position worldwide to watch the total eclipse of the moon. If you live in the Americas, the total eclipse happens after sunset September 27. In the world’s eastern hemisphere, the total eclipse happens after midnight and before sunrise September 28.

A very light penumbral eclipse comes before and after the dark (umbral) stage of the lunar eclipse. But this sort of eclipse is so faint that many people won’t even notice it. The penumbral eclipse would be more fun to watch from the moon, where it would be seen as a partial eclipse of the sun.

A partial lunar eclipse may be visible in the haze of evening dusk on September 27 from the extreme northwestern portion of North America (western Alaska). A partial lunar eclipse might also be observed in the haze of morning dawn (September 28) from far-western Asia (Pakistan, Afghanistan, eastern Iran).

Watch Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s Message For PM Modi, Before His Visit To Silicon Valley…

Sundar Pichai is a name known to most Indians these days. Ever since he took a prestigious position in Google, Indians have been proud of him for inspiring so many ambitious children to dream big.

As per a report by Reuters, on September 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the Silicon Valley. He will also pay a visit to the Google campus and Facebook headquarters and discuss the pressing issues that can lead to further technological development in India.

As a result, Sundar Pichai in his present capabilities as CEO of Google has extended a warm welcome to Mr. Modi. In this video shared by Google India, we see him inviting the prime minister. He also expressed that the team is very excited to meet him.

He strongly feels that PM’s visit will energize people in the Silicon Valley as well as people in India. He highlights Google’s upcoming plans and illustrates how they will help India.

Even we are looking forward to Mr. Modi’s visit to Google and we hope that it leads to many productive results!

Message for the Day….” Why did Krishna tell Arjuna ‘ You are My Devotee and My Friend’ “…?

Krishna told Arjuna, “You are My devotee and My friend.” Neither Arjuna declared himself as a devotee nor Krishna remained content with just declaring Arjuna to be His devotee. Why did Krishna say: “You are My friend?” This declaration has a profound spiritual significance. This will be clear only when we practice the spiritual life. If merely the Lord were to call Arjuna, “My friend” his ego could get inflated and he could take undue liberties with Krishna. If He were to say, “My dear, you are My devotee,” he could become extremely submissive and maybe even develop fear towards the Lord. Fear should not be instilled; nor should he be encouraged to take excessive liberties. Hence the terms devotee and friend, were used by Krishna. “You are My friend. You may be free with Me up to a point. You are My devotee. So observe certain restraints. Exercise control over yourself in your devotion.”

One must desire for everyone to be friends in order for everyone to be friends. She foresees a terrible outcome if niceness is in short supply. “If we live in a world where everyone is being mean, then everyone is going to be a monster in their future.”

The endgame for our teacher is peace for all. It starts with you. “Can you smile? Can we stop being mean to each other?” she pleads. She is in this with us. “I think if I can be nice, then I think all of us can be nice, too.”
