Image of the Day….”Airplane crossing Sun’s face …” !!!

While preparing on Sunday to watch today’s transit – an event Mercury crosses the face of our sun – Helio C. Vital caught an airplane doing the same.

Photo taken May 8, 2016 by Helio C. Vital.

Helio C. Vital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, wrote late Sunday night:

Brazil will be in the front row to watch the whole transit of Mercury on Monday.

This photo shows the sun less than 16 hours before Mercury starts to pass in front of our vital star. To make things even more exciting, as I was filming the sun in preparation for Monday’s rare event, a plane just happened to transit it, like Mercury will be doing. How nice!

Message for the Day…”Enthusiasm and care will show the way for the prosperity of human beings”

Most God fearing people believe in Karma philosophy, that fruits we reap, are a result of our own actions. Because of our strong faith in the doctrine ofKarma, we readily come forward to do good deeds, and hesitate or abstain from doing bad acts. To lose hope is not a characteristic feature of cultured people. To suffer from lack of faith and to lose hope is a weakness; by entertaining such weaknesses, one will lose all the human strength one has. Enthusiasm and care will show the way for the prosperity of human beings. Every individual with these qualities will surely achieve success and attain glory in any work that they undertake. Hence lead your journey of life with interest and enthusiasm.

Joke of the Day….” What is the moral of this story ….? ” !!!

A teacher told her young class to ask their parents for a family story with a moral at the end of it, and to return the next day to tell their stories.

In the classroom the next day, Joe told his story first, “My dad is a farmer and we have chickens. One day we were taking lots of eggs to market in a basket on the front seat of the truck when we hit a big bump in the road; the basket fell off the seat and all the eggs broke. The moral of the story is not to put all your eggs in one basket.
Very good,” said the teacher.
Next, Mary said, “We are farmers too. We had twenty eggs waiting to hatch, but when they did we only got ten chicks. The moral of this story is not to count your chickens before they’re hatched.
Excellent!” said the teacher again, very pleased with the response so far.
Next it was Barney’s turn to tell his story: “My dad told me this story about my Aunt Karen … Aunt Karen was a flight engineer in the war and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory and all she had was a bottle of whisky, a machine gun and a machete.
Go on,” said the teacher, intrigued
Aunt Karen drank the whisky on the way down to prepare herself; then she landed right in the middle of a hundred enemy soldiers.
She killed seventy of them with the machine gun until she ran out of bullets. Then she killed twenty more with the machete till the blade broke. And then she killed the last ten with her bare hands.

Good heavens,” said the horrified teacher. “What did your father say was the moral of that frightening story?
Stay away from Aunt Karen when she’s drunk.”

joke for the day…” what is he ..deaf or something ” ? !!!

A champion jockey is about to enter an important race on a new horse. The horse’s trainer meets him before the race and says, “All you have to remember with this horse is that every time you approach a jump, you have to shout, “ALLLLEEE OOOP!” really loudly in the horse’s ear. Providing you do that, you’ll be fine.”

The jockey thinks the trainer is mad but promises to shout the command. The race begins and they approach the first hurdle. The jockey ignores the trainer’s ridiculous advice and the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.

They carry on and approach the second hurdle. The jockey, somewhat embarrassed, whispers “Aleeee ooop” in the horse’s ear. The same thing happens – the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.

At the third hurdle, the jockey thinks, “It’s no good, I’ll have to do it,” and yells, “ALLLEEE OOOP!” really loudly. Sure enough, the horse sails over the jump with no problems. This continues for the rest of the race, but due to the earlier problems the horse only finishes third.

The trainer is fuming and asks the jockey what went wrong. The jockey replies, “Nothing is wrong with me – it’s this bloody horse. What is he – deaf or something?”

The trainer replies, “Deaf?? DEAF?? You idiot, he’s not deaf – he’s BLIND!

Joke of the day….” What is the most dangerous food …” !

A doctor was addressing a large audience in Oxford on the subject of modern nutrition.
“The rubbish we put into our stomachs should have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.
Red meat is full of steroids and dye. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High trans-fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realize the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water.

But, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and most of us have, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?”
After several seconds of quiet,
a 70-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said:
Wedding Cake?

Image of the Day….Smallest full Moon Of 2016….April 22 …

Curtis Beaird in south Georgia captured this shot.

EarthSky Facebook friend Curtis Beaird in south Georgia captured the shot above.

Tonight – April 22, 2016 – it’s the farthest full moon, and smallest full moon, of the year. We’ve heard it called the micro-moon or mini-moon. This full moon comes less than one day after reaching lunar apogee, the moon’s farthest point in its monthly orbit. It lies some 30 thousand miles (50 thousand km) farther from Earth than 2016’s closest full moon – a supermoon – due on November 14.

Every year has a closest full moon, and a farthest full moon. The mini-moon often returns about one month and 18 days later with each passing year, meaning that, in 2017, the year’s smallest full moon will come on June 9.

In 2018, the year’s smallest full moon will fall on July 27; and in 2019, the smallest full moon will occur on September 14. The micro-moon or mini-moon frequently recurs in periods of 14 lunar months (14 returns to full moon).

The crest of the moon’s full phase comes on April 22, 2016 at precisely 5:24 Universal Time.

Although the full moon occurs at the same instant all around the world, our clocks read differently in various time zones. In the United States, the moon turns exactly full on April 22, at 1:24 a.m. EDT, 12:24 a.m. CDT, and on April 21 at 11:24 p.m. MDT and 10:24 p.m. PST.

So in the Americas, the full moon happens on the night of April 21-22, and may have already passed by the time you are reading this post.

Meanwhile, your calendar probably says that April 22 is the full moon.

No matter where you live worldwide, look for the moon to look plenty full on the night of April 22. As with any moon near the vicinity of full moon, it’ll light up the nighttime from early evening until dawn.

In North America, we often call the April full moon by the names of Pink Moon, Grass Moon, Egg Moon or Fish Moon.

But in recent years, we’ve also heard the term micro-moon to describe the year’s smallest full moon. It’s not a name (like Pink Moon) tied to skylore. It’s not bound to a particular month or season.

It’s just a modern term to describe the year’s smallest moon.

Like most astronomers, we at EarthSky used to call the year’s smallest full moon an apogee full moon.

The terms mini-moon and micro-moon stem from popular culture. They roll off the tongue more easily than apogee full moon. As some indication of the appellation’s growing popularity, we’ve found that theNASA Astronomy Photo of the Day and timeanddate.org sites both like to call the year’s smallest full moon a micro-moon.

In many respects, the micro-moon is the antithesis of a supermoon. The micro-moon, or the full moon aligning with apogee, is the polar opposite of a full moon supermoon, the full moon coinciding with perigee.

Every month for the next seven months, the full moon will come closer and closer to Earth until the November 14 supermoon, closest full moon of the year.

That November full moon will be the year’s biggest and brightest moon, only 221,524 miles (356,509 km) away. That’s in contrast to the moon’s mean distance from Earth of about 384,400 kilometers (238,855 miles).

In fact, the November 14, 2016, supermoon will be closer to Earth than the moon has been thus far in the 21st century (2001-2100). The moon won’t come so close again until the full moon of November 25, 2034.

But it’s the December, 2052, full moon that’ll outdo them all. It’ll stage the closest and largestsupermoon of the 21st century (2001 to 2100).

The moon looks full for several days around full moon. William Vann caught this rising almost-full moon on March 4, 2015.

The moon looks full for several days around full moon. William Vann submitted this shot in 2015.

Bottom line: The micro-moon or mini-moon – smallest full moon of 2016 – comes on April 22. It lies about 30,000 miles (50,000 km) farther away from Earth than the full moon supermoon of November 14, 2016.

Can You Draw a Bicycle From Memory….? !!!

In 2009, Italian/American designer Gianluca Gimini walked up to random strangers and friends and asked them to draw a bicycle from heart. Sounds easy, right? After all, everybody has ridden bicycles, most from a very young age. It is impossible to not remember how a bicycle looks like. Well then, go grab a pencil and try it.

“Soon I found out that when confronted with this odd request most people have a very hard time remembering exactly how a bike is made,” says Gianluca Gimini.

Of the 376 people who responded to his interview, only 25 percent managed to make an accurate sketch. Some did get close, but most ended up drawing something that was pretty far off from a regular men’s bicycle. Gimini then took the most impractical designs and digitally rendered them, for his project titled “Velocipedia”.

Gianluca_Gimini-Velocipedia-4\

Gianluca_Gimini-Velocipedia-3

Gimini’s participants came from across seven different nationalities. The youngest one is aged at 3, and the oldest at 88. Nearly 90% of drawings in which the chain is attached to the front wheel (or both to the front and the rear) were made by females. On the other hand, while men generally tend to place the chain correctly, they are more keen to over-complicate the frame when they realize they are not drawing it correctly. The most unintelligible drawing was made by a doctor.

“There is an incredible diversity of new typologies emerging from these crowd-sourced and technically error-driven drawings. A single designer could not invent so many new bike designs in 100 lifetimes and this is why  I look at this collection in such awe,” said Gimini.

The idea started in a bar in Bologna, Italy, during a conversation with a friend. Gimini was recounting a childhood memory about a classmate who was asked to draw a bicycle, on the spot, in front of the entire class. He couldn’t, which seemed laughable. Both Gimini and his friend agreed that everyone knows how a bike is made, but when his friend tried to draw one on a napkin, he failed.

Later Gimini learned that he was not the first one to conduct this experiment. A psychologist from the University of Liverpool once challenged people to draw a bicycle from memory to demonstrate how our brain sometimes tricks us into thinking we know something even though we don’t.
